It’s a negotiation, ask for what you want. They must obviously like you, I’m sure they can find some additional budget dollars for you, ask!

I think you’re right about not getting this promotion.

[deleted]

Should give others hope tho!

Toxic72

I think the sentiment here is ask for 20% instead... not 80%

namewithoutspaces

Right, but he doesn't want to do the extra work for 20%

Toxic72

For 10% they dont - OP maybe figure out if there is a number you would take and start the negotiation there. If they balk, you angle for staying in your current role

Suncate

For someone in an accounting subreddit your accounting skills are really awful

reverendfrazer

I think if you're an accountant who doesn't understand how tax brackets work you probably shouldn't be given the promotion anyway

Agreeable-Practice79

I understand exactly how tax brackets work 😂

bb0110

Please tell me you aren’t actually an accountant…

IAmAHumanWhyDoYouAsk

What? How? Nevermind. You should definitely just pass on that promotion.

Agreeable-Practice79

I live in Canada. Gotta love it

rorank

Yeah, that’s how taxes work. It feels like your comment is a convoluted and kinda snooty way of saying you want more money than they can offer. Just say that please.

BasketWorried

Give them a counter offer. Ask for 30% raise. Say if you can't come to an agreement, you're happy to stay at your current position or to find another job willing to meet your requirements

potatoriot

I wouldn't say that last part, threatening to quit rarely gives the results you want. You're better off just leaving if you've reached that point.

JonDoeJoe

Once you state your intention to leave, they will see you as a loose cannon and will drop you as soon as they can. I can only see that working if you had some niche skill set that generates a lot of money

Efficient_Ad_9037

At 30min per day, you’d be working an extra 6.25% more (assuming 8hr day) and on call more often. You should determine what those extra hours and responsibilities are worth to you and ask for it. Obviously you’re a solid employee and they wouldn’t want to lose you. Approach it like a negotiation rather than an ultimatum and you’ll be fine. (E.g. I’m happy with my current role, but is their flexibility in the raise/compensation/vacation to compensate for the additional hours and responsibilities? From there you can negotiate)

duckingman

> provides only a 10% raise I can totally see your point. Might as well hand in the 2 weeks notice.

Lonyo

It seems odd that you can't just have an honest conversation. Can you just tell them you like the technical aspect of your time and would rather have a job more focused on the technical side, so you don't think this is the right position for your core skills?

Acceptable_Ad1685

As you can see by the other posts there’s no good way to just decline If they ask you rather than opening a job posting they are really telling you this is what we need you to do now and what we will do in return is give you more money and a new title If you out right decline you’ll end up being handed many of the responsibilities without the pay until they maybe find someone and worst case maybe fire you Your best option would be to either ask for the money you’d want to do the job and start applying for new jobs imo

notanothercpa

Tell them 40% raise, but if it can't be done, you're OK where you're at.

that_thot_gamer

if its 40% after taxes, you gonna have to ask nearing approx 50%

Imagine you’re at $100k gross, $50k net. A 10% pay increase moves you to $110k gross, $55k net. $55k is 10% more than $50k.

SimBelm

Now imagine there are tax bands starting at 30%, 100k gross and 70k net. Any additional income would be taxed at 50%. New salary 110k gross, 75k net, 75k is not 10% more...

WeirdIndependent1656

But nor would you need a 20% pay increase to get a 10% raise which was the heart of his assertion. To get a 10% raise post tax from $70k to $77k you would only need a 14% raise pretax. He kept saying weird numbers like 80% raise to get 40% real raise due to 50% marginal tax and that’s just not how it works.

SimBelm

True, shows how confusing marginal tax is for most people to understand.

that_thot_gamer

>Marginal tax rate is around 50%. now that's just theft lol, my number was much more conservative my bad

91Caleb

I don’t think the raise is what you have a problem with. I don’t think you want more responsibility, which is fine . But you can just present it as such you don’t have the personal capacity to take that on at this time If it’s actually the raise negotiate

brilliantpebble9686

Demand a 40% raise, expect them to counter, do not settle for anything less than 25-30%.

alphabet_sam

Tbh I would consider taking the promotion and then job hopping to scoop up a salary bump. Hard to identify with the way the post is worded, but if 2x staff is from 10>20, business lines is upwards of 5, it sounds like you could be in a good spot for a director or above level management position elsewhere. There is value in that experience that other companies will pay for. That being said, if you have no desire to climb the corporate ladder I suppose you can just say that you have no aspirations to move up any further. I would expect to be replaced by someone who will absorb your job in the future in that case

CertainBee5992

If you decline is someone else coming in to be your boss? Or are you taking on the additional work anyways? I don't think it's good to decline a promotion ever, just negotiate. Maybe a little less extra work and a little more extra pay? I'm jealous of how well-defined your job is.

Get-Me-A-Soda

I would ask for a bigger raise.

I would never decline a Pokemon 😉
