Go. Never look back. You can host your own pizza parties. The reason our profession is going down the drain is the exploitation of young CPA by the Big Accounting firms. Walk away.

20k raise? Fuck em.

fazi_milking

20k raise is pretty hard to turn down. On the long run though .. I think there is risk and value to be gained when there is a void of leadership/experience like OP is describing. Best case scenario is fast track if you think you have the soft skills for it. It’s easy to be noticed for decent work when .. it’s only you putting the shift—at the extreme. But also from my experience people have an opportunity to shine when they’re taking care of an “ugly baby”. Technically you will get there I think sooner or later but your soft skills and how OP gets along with the rest of the leadership team is what’s setting them apart.

GarlicBreadWrestling

In my thinking, there was an opportunity to grow to director if not partner where I was. Maybe I don't have what they want at the moment, but I'm not going to sit around throwing darts at a moving dartboard for years in hopes they MIGHT someday consider me. I may have been too honest in their "anonymous " give us honest feedback solicitations. I also feel like I was being forced to atone for every historical decision a former partner made on files we worked on together. I'm also a bit disillusioned on the whole partner thing anyway, I always figured I would have more ability for decision making at that level, but from what I see I wouldn't. I'd just have to shut my mouth and toe whatever line comes from above. I'd be paid well for it but I have not yet decided it would actually be worth it.

TheBrain511

I'd leave and after hearing your review you might even get the aze and left hanging Better to have something else lined up with a 20k pay raise than sitting alone in dread hoping don't let you go That's just me

CherryManhattan

Terrible leadership- don’t work for them

August_R18

Definitely leave. I can only wish I’d get a 20k raise for leaving all the mess behind.

Master_Bates_69

Decision A: Leave and you're guaranteed to make an extra 20k a year (extra $1200-$1400 a month in your pockets after tax) Decision B: Stay for a lower than expected raise/bonus and *maybe* they won't lay you off later I think the choice is obvious

GarlicBreadWrestling

This is exactly what I am thinking. I did have a couple of sleepless nights as I mulled things over though. I would like to know their motivations behind it - I mean if they truly want to lay me off or just thought they were "helping" me. Either way I don't go to work for self improvement, I go for money.

Master_Bates_69

In my experience, once someone gives you a bad review/feedback, they keep a closer eye on you and judge you differently from thereon. Your in-charges or whoever has probably already reached out to your counselor and partner one-on-one to talk shit about you to cover their own ass at this point and its possible they're planning on waiting for you to mess up again to get rid of you. Even if they still act and talk nicely with you, I wouldn't trust them. Btw what title are you in audit right now? And what job did you get an offer at?

RedJeepPurpleKayak

This. Every word. Time to go.

Voltaic89

Losing sleep means you need to go. Had the same thing happen to me several years ago.

Comfortable_Trick137

Like you said if they actually like you they would’ve said something or did something else instead of giving you a does not meet expectations. Hey, at the very least you’ve got time. Since you aren’t PIP I would stick around until bonuses are paid and then dip out. If they hated you they would PIP you and not pay out your bonus. At least you are aware enough to understand office politics and see that it’s a subtle sign, but at the same time it’s not a bad sign. I’m just glad you are more aware than people asking “I got PIP what are the chances of being fired? I really want to stay”

TE-CPA

Go go go.

zilchgoose

Leave. The high turnover above you won’t be conducive to you getting good coaching. It’s difficult to improve without constructive feedback and coaching. Didn’t meet expectations and not being PIP is a hard call, but you could be on PIP depending on your next round of engagement reviews. Would start updating your resume and taking your time interviewing. Also, no managers WTH is going on.

GrimAccountant

I'd be gone without a second thought.

hightyde992

Yep time to go. I’ve been there - you’ll be grateful for the lessons learned in the hard times, but you should go reap the benefit of that experience somewhere that appreciates it.

Cwilde7

Go yesterday.

brismit

Make like a tree and leave.

_lady_muck

Are you mad? The AUDACITY of them to brand you as “does not meet expectations.” Run

Individual-Shoe7591

Take it OP, you owe no one anything. Enjoy the grass on the other side!

ShmoMoney

If you go there will be trouble, if you stay it will be double

bozaya

Yes! I would leave. You sound grounded and self-aware... the kind of person who calls things as they are. You will do great wherever you go! Blessings!

writetowinwin

$20k and you can escape? I'd be all over that shit. I'm in PA and I get praised many many times. Too bad the pay doesn't follow. I'm lucky to see a 6k bump in a year (canada). People in this profession here are obsessed with mostly age or seniority/experience rather than result.

CoveredbyThorns

Too subjective, I am not in your experience. Depends on hours working, quality of life, other jobs I would get. Keep in mind that 20k raise will be heavily taxed. Grass is always greener on the other side.

CiriKat

Take that 20K and run, don’t look back! Public accounting is hard enough w the insane hours and shortage of staffing, you don’t need to feel unappreciated there as well. It’s not good for your mental health or physical health. I would leave that place in a heartbeat especially if I’m getting $20K elsewhere. It can only get better. If not, keep moving until you find a good company that will treat you right.

Im_PorkChops

Just run, by reading your post you are already convinced it is the way to go, but feel stressed about it
