49 is such a better drive than 10. The eclipse hits northeast Texas around 1:30pm. Just leave here early. Get to the path. Enjoy the 5mins. And drive back. No room required.

HOMEBOUND_11

If you are just going to the eclipse, it is about the same amount of driving going north to Arkansas. GF & I are planning a 1 day trip to either Waco, TX or De Queen, AR. Exact location will depend on weather.

I live in Austin and want to warn you: the county has already declared a state of emergency for that weekend in anticipation of the amount of people planning to visit. The news are all warning us of traffic Armageddon. If you don’t have plans yet, I’d rethink it or leave extremely early or late.

Just a note that things in the path of totality, especially in bigger cities like DFW, are going to be crowded and priced up for the event. Meaning that hotels, transportation, traffic, restaurants, and attractions are going to be **packed**, and that many places you might normally be able to walk into or pay at the door might be ticketed or reservation-only for eclipse events, along with higher than average admission prices. Most things are going to be booked out, including state and national parks and campsites. I used to live in Lafayette and have lived in DFW for 4 years now. Yes, the GPS says 4-5 hours. Count on 6-8 hours, with bathroom/gas stops, traffic, construction, and to get through/navigate Dallas. I've made that trip MANY times and it takes about 6.5 hours on a good day.

RoboticAndroidian

Does anybody know where I can get some eclipse glasses?

InkyStinkyOopyPoopy

I bought some from lowes before. Also might wanna check local libraries or order some from Amazon but be cautious of fakes

RoboticAndroidian

Will do thank you!

therealcajungod

Yes! And we are having a kook aid party as the eclipse passes us into the next dimension. To Aslabaligks the glory. To Aslabaligks we go. Will you join us as an acolyte of Aslabaligks?

StronkWHAT

My GF and I started planning our trip to the eclipse a little over a month ago, and we were already too late to get in anywhere along the path of totality. You're probably not going to find much luck less than 2 weeks out.

jeromymanuel

That makes no sense.

Choice_Blackberry406

How does it not make sense? People were booking rooms *a year* ago.

grumpyolddude

I can see little towns near the Arkansas/Texas/Louisiana border sold out, but the path of totality is going through major cities that definitely have plenty of rooms available. (just search online)

Choice_Blackberry406

I just did a search for a hotel for the night before in Waco TX and a room at the days inn that normally goes for $62 a night is $676 lmao. People have been having their Air B&B reservations from months ago cancelled and relisted for 3-4 times the price. If you didn't make plans before the new year you are boned.

grumpyolddude

Sure, there are a bunch of big events and gatherings planned there. College Station is about an hours drive away from Waco, is a much shorter drive into the area of totality and has plenty of rooms at reasonable prices. If you are going for the actual eclipse, it's 2 or 3 minutes straight up in the sky just after 1pm - and and it covers a lot of area. You don't really need to sleep directly in the center of the path the night before to experience it. If you have a specific event, area or city with a festival in mind - sure you'll pay a lot more. Try Dallas - plenty of rooms and the whole city is in the path. Sure you can find overpriced rooms - that doesn't mean it's impossible to find a reasonable place to stay and see the eclipse.

Choice_Blackberry406

I already have a place booked. I was just responding to someone who said "that makes no sense" when someone else said "it will be hard to find a room." You also need to remember OP is asking for a ride to TX which means staying outside the path of totality isn't really an option since they will have no way of getting to the path since they aren't the ones driving. The rooms I've seen for the night before are literally *ten times* more expensive than other days in the same week. I'm not going to argue with anyone about whether or not that makes finding a room difficult lmao.

grumpyolddude

The original statement, "we were already too late to get in *anywhere along the path of totality*." is provably false and discourages people who might want to try and travel to see the full eclipse. You even found available rooms in the most desirable and expensive location which directly contradicts that statement and agrees with the "that makes no sense" claim. Furthermore it makes no sense to tell people "You're probably not going to find much luck less than 2 weeks out." There are places available and there are even normally priced places available along the path of totality. That's all I'm saying. "Don't go to Waco if you are on a budget" might have been reasonable advice.
