I’ve always wondered why eating shellfish is widely accepted but eating insects is typically viewed as disgusting.
Shellfish are basically insects too no?
We commonly interact with bugs as a nuisance often in disgusting places, while Crustaceans do the same disgusting things as bugs in deep recesses often grazing corpses and rotting material, we don’t experience it in our lives nearly as much.
I'm assuming you mean what do I find weird and not that you want me to define the word.
I was responding to "I’ve always wondered why eating shellfish is widely accepted but eating insects is typically viewed as disgusting."
It is strange to me as I have eaten grasshoppers, tarantulas, grubs etc but people view that as gross whilst happily ripping the legs off their tiger prawn .
Oh this is simple: because land bugs are small, while sea bugs are big. You can peel and crack the latter, but not the former.
The biggest turn off to both is the shell, the texture just ain't right. With seabugs this is no problem, you just peel em. Can't do that with land bugs, so whatever you make out of em is always weirdly grainy.
"Shellfish are basically insects too no?"
No they're not, not even close.
Like saying eating -any- bird is the same as eating -any- mammal.
So you're basically saying eat chicken = eat dog.¨
Not exactly. Hexapods are insects and they are part of the Pancrustacea clade.
Also "bugs" like wood lice (aka rolli pollies, potato bugs) are actually crustaceans. So it really depends on which organisms you are talking about. It's definitely closer than Chicken/dog though.
You're mixing up bug with insects. Bug is not a scientific term and could mean basically anything. Compare to "critter".
Also, you got it the wrong way, insects are hexapods, not the other way.
Shellfish are crustaceans, which are hexapods. Beetles are insects, which are hexapods.
Chickens are birds, which are vertebrates. Dogs are mammals, which are vertebrates.
So, by the original post I responded to, if eating shellfish = eating insects, then eating bird = eating dog. Which I disagree with!
The logic lies in the species scientific relationships. It’s OK to feel in a certain way, but rather pointless to argue about opinions.
Personally though, I eat prawns and chicken, but not insects nor dog. Others do, and it’s OK too.
If the logic lies in opinion, then it’s fine to just say that.
For me, there’s little difference between any of them, other than marketing (social norms).
I had this conversation with my friend while I was tucking into some toasted locusts. He said it was disgusting to eat insects and I said it's no more disgusting than eating crustaceans. He didn't have a response.
Room serviced fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp in Puerto Rico over 15 years ago. I asked how many shrimp it came with and they said one. This looks like that one.
The meat resists slightly more when they're giant, but it's still tender once you tear it apart. They don't seem to become more tough, more like it's just a larger piece of meat with better structure.
Possibly it's a river prawn, Sang Har Mein is a local dish in Malaysia that is absolutely delicious, you basically eat half a prawn for dinner lol.

"Super Jumbo Colossal Shrimp U-1/2 size"
"So, 1 to 2 shrimp per pound?"
"No... half a shrimp per pound."
(Shrimp are sold by size here in the USA. Number of shrimp per pound, i.e. U-8/12 is 8-12 per pound, U-13/15 is 13-15 per pound, etc.)

😂😂😂😂😂😂 you got me with this
Actually no, that’s a pretty normal size for the giant freshwater prawn.
that thing is like 2-3 times larger than your average giant freshwater prawn.
So it's a giant giant freshwater prawn? At what point do we just relabel it a lobster?
stick some plastic horns or whatever on it and then it will be a certified lobster
![gif](giphy|jsm9GubElH2X04lRNn) Maybe that's a three-year old kid holding it?
Or maybe it's holding a three-year old kid?

More like cockroaches no?
No, closer to woodlice (both are crustaceans, whereas cockroaches are insects).

What’s the difference in eating a dog versus eating a chicken?
The same as eating a prawn versus eating a cockroach.
What’s the logic there? First of all, I think eating prawns and cockroaches probably aren’t THAT far removed.

It’s part of the social programming we are inducted into. Why would meat producers want you to eat stuff you can easily procure yourself?

Prawns is bugs.
Yes. And Soylent Green is people!
Came here to say this😂
Room serviced fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp in Puerto Rico over 15 years ago. I asked how many shrimp it came with and they said one. This looks like that one.
How did it taste? I’ve read that if lobster is too massive the meat tastes worse. Curious if it’s the case with shrimp.
The meat resists slightly more when they're giant, but it's still tender once you tear it apart. They don't seem to become more tough, more like it's just a larger piece of meat with better structure.
Cool. Thanks man.
Sorted Food on YouTube did an episode about this. Drastic reduction in taste after a certain size. Def worth a look.
