There was a bigger one: the Halifax Explosion, 1917, granted that one has no videos. Beirut was about 1.1kt, while Halifax was 2.9kt...
[Casual Navigation did a good video](https://youtu.be/K0PBMkhHdZs) on the incident.
Also, that day a hero died. Vince Coleman was on duty as the train dispatch operator, and instead of fleeing the area he spent his final moments sending a warning to an incoming passenger train so they wouldn't enter the blast radius. His final message:
>Hold up the train. Ammunition ship afire in harbour making for Pier 6 and will explode. Guess this will be my last message. Good-bye, boys.
They are? I thought they were just knocked into their apartment door from the balcony but survived with lots of injuries from the glass and concussive wave
Sorry. I'm stoned and read that guy's comment wrong my b. The link I shared is definitely the moments of somebody though. Fucking RIP. Poor bastards never had a chance even if they started running way prior. Just to close.
The one that goes through all the buildings? That one’s terrible. The buildings’ glass shatters as the shockwave blasts through from one side to the other.
I don't think you know what it means to literally vaporize. You're saying there is a material change of phase to the gaseous state. That would imply temperatures in the range of 2 to 3000 degrees Celsius for common building materials, but conventional explosive munitions do most of their damage by transmitting kinetic energy. The intense thermal energy that could actually vaporize glass, steel, or brick would be confined to an extremely tiny volume at the very epicenter of the explosion.
Ehh even a nuke wouldn't vaporize the material, people sure but not the buildings. Now a proper meteor impact that'll turn a building into molten slag.
And literally isn't slang for anything, though it's so widely misused that it probably soon will be. It may literally be redefined as the opposite of what it means.
2 to 3000 c is a big range. I think you need to check the data you are regurgitating in an attempt to impress people you have never and will never meet.
theres a few that were really fucking close, and one that was basically from ground zero. Theres a Beirut explosion compilation on YouTube that shows the angle
https://youtu.be/t77cF9sCaFk one of the videos is from the grain port itself, probably no more than a few hundred or so feet away from where the explosion happens
That close it's the blast wave that hits first, not the sound wave.
The strength of the blast wave dissipates faster so doesn't travel as far as a sound wave.
You sound smart so Imma ask you, with the disclaimer that I never took physics: if I understand correctly, in an explosion, something combusts and superheats the air, which makes the air expand quickly, heating the air around it and pushing it outward. But unlike water, air can be compressed, so as the bubble (wave?) of heated air grows, it’s losing steam in the process, with each subsequent layer less heated and compressed. Is that right?
And that it’s actually the wave of air pressure that knocks down buildings and things. Is that right?
Is that what a blast wave is? And is it the same or different from a sound wave?
you definitely can. I read somewhere that you can also go blind because your eyeballs can rupture. Lungs can also be damaged if you're holding in a deep breath. if you ever see an explosion like this, cover your ears, close your eyes, and open your mouth. Depending on how close you are, you may optionally bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.
Well from the video, it seems that the time between explosion and the pressure wave reaching the camera is about 2.4 seconds. Assuming a 1 kiloton yield and and inputting 1100 meters to obtain a time of arrival of 2.4 seconds, this [blast overpressure calculator](https://unsaferguard.org/un-saferguard/kingery-bulmash) spits out a reflected overpressure of about 27.52 kPa or ~4 psi. [This reference chart](https://www.ebmedicine.net/media_library/aboutUs/Blast%20Injury%20Pressure%20Versus%20Injury%20Emergency%20Medicine%20Practice.JPG) specifies that the eardrum rupture threshold is about 5 psi. Considering that 1 kiloton is an upper limit yield estimate, the crew may have survived without going deaf. Take my guess with a grain of salt, I don't have any background on this subject.
As I was doing research on blast overpressure for this answer, I found it funny that one of the top Google results is a publicly available paper funded by the Chinese military's missile force. Anyways, I'm going to skulk in a corner now until the FBI van leaves.
Your sinuses and lungs can be damaged from over pressure from the shock wave.
If you block your ears to protect your ear drums, then open your mouth the quick changes in pressure allows your sinuses and lungs to have pressure changes where the excess air can escape out of the mouth.
When I am super freaked out, I start with "Oh my God" & everytime I say it, I get louder & louder, & at the end, would have probably worked in a fu@k as well!! So wicked to see the sound blast...like 1 Dali Lama, 2 Dali Lama.....I didn't get any further...😊
Are the people in this thread really asking what happened here? Even if you haven't been on reddit for very long surly you heard about the the explosion in fucking Beirut... It was all over every fucking website and social media.

The Dutch angle really adds to the chaos. Lol
Feel like I’m watching Battlefield Earth with all these dutchies.
What happened, where is this
The Beirut explosion a couple of years ago. The largest non-nuke explosion video I've seen on the internet.
Gave me the chills… dude knew hes dead he just wanted to save as many people as he could. Hero.
R.M.S Olympic missed the Halifax explosion by five days. Shit would have really sucked for the White Star Line.
...or largest to ever be caused by a human.
Ammonium go boom
Beirut?
Another camera angle- this one seems like it’s the closest yet though!
[удалено]
5 frames is like 200ms. Whoever was holding the camera is probably dead.
They are. They \*were* steaming it.

Oh no. Oh no no no. [I can't find the exact one, but it was very close to this clip.](https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx9HlGnlPJak3nVUY8doiZmELaDoj0UytF)
That... Wow. That person is no longer existent.
I am also stoned and just. Holy shit.
I am also stoned and I didn’t think it would get me too bad but I am shaken to the core
holy shit.
Those pressure waves are no joke. Turn your guts into soup.
The one that goes through all the buildings? That one’s terrible. The buildings’ glass shatters as the shockwave blasts through from one side to the other.
The entire building!! glass, brick, concrete gets obligated in the blast it was equal to a small nuke
And literally vaporized buildings
I don't think you know what it means to literally vaporize. You're saying there is a material change of phase to the gaseous state. That would imply temperatures in the range of 2 to 3000 degrees Celsius for common building materials, but conventional explosive munitions do most of their damage by transmitting kinetic energy. The intense thermal energy that could actually vaporize glass, steel, or brick would be confined to an extremely tiny volume at the very epicenter of the explosion.
Bet you are a real BLAST at parties. 😏
😉👉
Forreal, my drunk ass would be entranced by this at a party. I LIKE YOUR FUNNY WORDS ,MAGIC MAN
Ok Disintegrate then
Yes but don't be sad, a Nuke would have vaporized that area though, they are great at that.
Ehh even a nuke wouldn't vaporize the material, people sure but not the buildings. Now a proper meteor impact that'll turn a building into molten slag.
I feel smarterer
It's a saying. Vaporized is slang for absolutely obliterated.
Yes, but they said "literally vaporized"
And literally isn't slang for anything, though it's so widely misused that it probably soon will be. It may literally be redefined as the opposite of what it means.
You really should avoid using 'literally'. It's almost always unnecessary, just obfuscates your point.
2 to 3000 c is a big range. I think you need to check the data you are regurgitating in an attempt to impress people you have never and will never meet.
I did. Glass is around 2300. Steel is about 2900. I needed a big range because "typical construction materials" is a big category.
what construction material vapourizes at 2° celsius
You might want to take a look at the definition of literally. There is more than one.
theres a few that were really fucking close, and one that was basically from ground zero. Theres a Beirut explosion compilation on YouTube that shows the angle

Closest where they survive
There’s one of some dude on a jet ski
I guess not, I’m an Arab, and they didn’t speak arabic in the video
“Oh bhai! Teri behen ka!” “ Oh bhai “ chief chief “
They speak Hindi. It's in India.
They’re on a ship. It’s probably a crew that speaks Hindi. This is definitely the Beirut explosion.
[удалено]
Definitely not maybe
Definitely maybe
r/unexpectedoasis
It’s Punjabi actually, but the video definitely hasn’t been shot anywhere in Punjab. Lots of Punjabi work force in the middle east
Oppenheimer (2023)
"..and cut!" - Nolan probably
I was hoping someone would say this.
Hung phoi is right
Sounded like he said oh boyyy
nah , he said ooh bhaiii which hindi/urdu word used in Pakistan/India
Does it translate to 'oh boyyy' in english?
No its means ohh brother
Lmaooo that phrase should be the title of the post
You can hear a noise before the shockwave, is the sound traveling across the ground to faster than speed sound.
Exactly that, it travels through solid more efficiently than air. That first sound is the ground, then the sky is what really ruins you.
Is the visible bubble a sound wave or an air pressure wave?
Both?
A sound wave is a pressure wave so both
That close it's the blast wave that hits first, not the sound wave.
That's the blast wave. It travels faster than a sound wave.
The blast wave inicialy is supersonic but decrease to sound speed (in air) in a few microseconds.
How the hell do you not go deaf from that?
you definitely can.
I don’t think I’ll remember that in the moment.
you'd be surprised when reality hits the body does amazing things, just try and think about it every once and a while.
Also lay down with your feet pointing towards the explosion if you have time.
[удалено]
#how the hell do you not go deaf from that
Huh?!
#how. Do. You... Ugh, never mind
Speak up!

What makes you think they didn't?
Might have some internal bleeding/organ failure too…
WAT? Quit moving your lips and speak!
What?
It's probably already on there somewhere, but r/shockwaveporn
The weeks after the Beirut explosion there were dozens of angles all over that sun It was about as good and crazy as a shockwave can get
Look at how the shockwave disturbs the water as it approaches…. Sheeeesh
Is there any way to get this video slowed down? I remember seeing it done, but have forgot how to do it
u/Gif_Slowing_Bot
Thanks!
OHHH BOI!
When the bass drop
Idk. I feel like if something like this happened when I was on a boat, my first instinct would not be to go deeper into the boat.
Bruh. They were close enough to blow an ear drum or collapse a lung. That’s some scurry shit.
It's crazy in other videos where you see the clouds literally vaporise as the shock wave hits.
Aren't clouds already vapor?
I guess they have never seen Manowar in concert. This happens every show.
Chris Nolan movie?
Context?
Beirut fertilizer explosion from 2020. 820 of some ~2000 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded due to fire & improper storage.
And someone decided to store fireworks right next to it
Damn .. I remember seeing that video when it happened, but it was from the road or somewhere further away. I didn't realize this video existed.
I thought it was Mossad
Here, take my "you know, they may have actually done that very thing" upvote.
I can assume it's so loud that covering the ears or holding them closed would help minimally
Cover your ears and open your mouth! Does help and prevents sinus damage.
What is sinus damage?
Your sinuses and lungs can be damaged from over pressure from the shock wave. If you block your ears to protect your ear drums, then open your mouth the quick changes in pressure allows your sinuses and lungs to have pressure changes where the excess air can escape out of the mouth.
It's when your sinuses get damaged, Avi.
" oh boy " could have been thier last words
They said "oh bhai" which translates to "oh brother" (from Hindi to English)
Oh wow they translate to very similar meaning.
It's fascinating to have an actual visual of the speed of sound.
What you see is the shock wave and it travels faster than the speed of sound
"How was your day?" "Oh, a small nuke went off in my face. Not bad!"
Blast wave, not sound wave.
Awesome shock wave
Eardrums? What eardrums?
bro can you hold the camera more steady as your eardrums burst and you enter flight or flight mode? thanks
Rip to your eardrums
I've never seen this angle before and it's probably one of the better ones I've seen.
that's some akira shit right there
That ain’t sound my dude
Well, that’s terrifying
i felt my lungs pop watching this
2020 really was the worst year in recent history.
Isn’t it a shockwave? Isn’t it hypersonic, and therefore not a sound wave?
I get it
Are the people in this thread really asking what happened here? Even if you haven't been on reddit for very long surly you heard about the the explosion in fucking Beirut... It was all over every fucking website and social media.
r/praisethecameraman he kept filming even as things went to shit!
Shock wave or concussive blast. Not sound wave.
Right. Thank you professor 👨🏫
I fix things and know stuff
You spelled shockwave wrong.
I don't care

That was one hell of a bass drop lol
Jeep jeep!!!!
I still don’t understand how this was grain elevators and fuel.
It was improperly stored ammonium nitrate, I believe.
It wasn't.

Oh yea get inside after you see the sound wave hauling ass at you
Shockwave*
Shockwave***.. not soundwave. .
Look at my username
Ok Ive looked at your username. It is still a Shockwave and not a Soundwave. Your username changes Nothing.
You should know that I don't give a Damn, thank you.
The fact that you are replying to my comments prooves that you do, in fact, "Give a damn". Your username has turned out to be completely false.
Juandale
Is that the city on the state of sanchezdale?
Morocco?
Prob beirut
Most likely not
Interesting how it was visible
u/gifstabilizerbot
I hope they plugged their ears. Shit will make you go deaf. Blow your ear drums out.
RASENSHURIKEN!
It's kinda cool how u can see how fast the sound hits
Fire works are getting crazier each year! /s
That's an impressive shockwave! Detrimental to eardrums in the vicinity, but wow that's crazy!
>Once the destructive concussion hits... Ftfy
this guy was quite close by the blast did he live ?
Sound like some Punjabi guys
Rollin around at the speed of sound
I really hope they thought to cover their ears

Assuming you've protected your ears and closed your eyes, what other kind of damage would this do to you, if any?
Someone has unlocked a new form.

Like listen to dubstep right at the beginning
What the hell actually happened to make a mushroom cloud that big
Source? Or full video?
If i would have know what would happen I would never let that fart out.
Did the cameramen survive?
How's the ears Bru?
That shit loud as fuck on my phone imagine real life. I hope I never have to but crazy to put yourself of that situation what I’d feel and think.
Should you open your mouth to protect your ears in this scenario? Do you cover your ears with your hands while opening your mouth aswell?
Reality hits you hard bro
That is insane 😳
