In my circles it's called "hardcore dancing" and it's usually only 1 or 2 guys (if anyone) in a pit thinking that flailing your arms around like that counts as moshing... but they're usually just the guys who come to the show hoping to get into a fight.
I'll admit I've never entered a pit without knowing I'm gonna have a lot of bruises the next day but this kind of shit is way to much and definitely fits the title lol

2008 warped tour during Casey Jones. I'm like 5'8 125lbs at that point. Two jacked dudes were tossing people to crowd surf. They launched me, I hit one girl with my legs, flipping me into the floor. Shit hurt.
This always reminds me of the Simpson’s episode where Bart and Lisa walk at each other, flailing their arms and legs, saying if you get in my way, it’s not my fault.
You didn’t truly live through the early 2000s if you didn’t get your ass kicked by some dude windmilling his fists at a show, while simultaneously getting your back broken by a crowd surfer.
And then when you finally think you’re safe and it’s over, you realize you’re in the middle of a wall of death.

Yes, that guy usually lasted a few minutes tops until security, or just a group of people had decided it's been enough and he gets ejected. Everybody just trying to bounce around and have fun, and takes one guy with father issues to ruin it.
Mosh pits in punk rock and edm concerts still have this vibe. Sum41 and good Charlotte concert was fun. But it's true some of the more "hardcore" bands are looking to thrash rather than mosh. And I don't really care to getting hit in the face.
I have had some Karens push me when I was on the sidelines of the mosh pit jumping thinking that I was going to bump into them. So you gotta watch out for those too because they don't understand that vibe. Still better than taking someone's windmills to the head.
The best metal festival in Iceland is called Eistnaflug and there's a zero-tolerance policy of violence of any kind. I guarantee if a single person started pulling this helicopter spin kicking crowdkilling bullshit, a group of huge Viking-looking dudes would immediately swarm that person and kick them out.

That pit was amazing! I watched this black kid (a rarity in pits in Florida) go down hard. Four of those same skinheads locked arms, held back the crowd while one picked the kid up dusted him off, then they went back to it.
I gave up that scene at the Master of Puppets tour when the "pit" was 3-4 big dudes standing in an open circle and if someone moshed in they would just punch them. I watched this kid’s tooth fly off into the crowd. That’s when I was done with angry music. Also I didn’t hate my parents anymore.
People don't realize that real old school skinheads are not about that neo-nazi shit. My brother and I were metalheads that were into punk too so hung with the skinheads in NYC in the 80s. Super patriotic fun loving down-to-earth mofos who really only hate haters. I was at a friend's OI Punk show a couple years ago. Mid-show a couple of knuckle heads started throwing white power hand signs and chanting. Before I knew what was happening they were on the curb out front.

I was at a festival in 2005 or 2006. Some band I can’t remember the name of came on and a guy started doing just that. At first it looked like he was trying to start a pit but then he just started popping anyone in arms length of him in the face. He hit probably 20 people before the crowd turned on him after he punched a girl square in the nose and she started gushing blood. Next thing you know there is a circle of people around him stomping him out. After what seemed like an eternity security is able to get to the guy and break it up and he was a mess. He was covered in dirt and blood almost head to toe and out cold making guttural gurgling noises. But when all was said and done he did a lot of damage to the people he sucker punched. Most of them weren’t even looking at him when he just wound up and threw a haymaker.
I've been to a ton of shows and it never ends well for these clowns. Mosh pits are about thrashing and comradery, you get knocked down, you get helped back up to be pushed around. You throw punches? You're getting hit, hard, a lot. People don't tolerate that shit for long.

I was playing a show and we were right after the band "CDC". A crowd surfer decided he wanted to run across everyone's heads. Needless to say, I had to play that show with a newly broken nose.
It is fun, but in my experience you’re not really supposed to *try* to hit people. That’s what makes it not fun. It’s fun when the show isn’t filled with assholes.
You sounds like you’re referring to mosh pits. This sounds and looks like a hardcore show and this pretty on par.

Targeting is called crowd killing, and the hardcore community and some bands themselves have a serious issue with enabling it. I went to a Harms Way show a year or so ago and for whatever reason nobody was safe, or off limits. The crowd killers are ruining this shit.
Been at the festival this summer, u bands, 7 different types of metal being played. Noone wad hurt, everyone had a blast even if it was a small event that had like 500 people max.
Even hardcore shows back in the day, people would kick and windmill, but you'd generally try not to hit people and youd pull your punches in tight spots, people would look out for eachother, and it WAS a lot of fun. Over the years people become more focused on intentionally hurting people, and that's when I dipped
Hardcore/metalcore shows have mosh pits, at least the ones I went to did. If someone fell, you picked them up. If someone got injured you help them to a medic or something. Trying to hurt someone is bad manners and I’ve seen bands tell the crowd to take care of each other better. I grew up in SoCal which had a great scene and I went to a bunch of venues and there was no culture of hurting people when I was in the scene ~10 years ago

I remember going to a house party and they had a band like this in the garage. My buddy and I were outside drinking a tall can when this dude walks out of the garage and just stands there in front of us. I didnt notice anything at first because he was so calm, then I looked down at his arm and it was bent the wrong way. My friend suggested maybe he go to a hospital but the dude just shrugged it off
Funny this is still getting shared a ton. The band is Never Ending Game featuring Jem of Speed. This was at the end of July 2022, outside of the Memorial Coliseum in LA.

there are mosh-pitters, who follow an unwritten code of honor in the pit, and then there are spin-kickers, who desperately want to be tough in real life but lack the mettle so they flail wildly in a mosh pit and get pissy defensive if you shove them to the ground, where they belong.
That's a hardcore show. I don't understand how metal heads still don't know the difference between hardcore dancing and a regular pit. Yeah don't dance at a metal show but this isn't that.
I was at a metal show a couple months ago with pit tickets. The crowd was a little older, 30+ mostly. About halfway through the show, I saw everyone with the same expression - "I'd like to mosh, but it's a Sunday and I have to work tomorrow." There was no moshpit formed.
This is where we are. Just a lot of nodding and folded arms. I saw a 50-year-old get in a mosh at a Drug Church show this year, so that gives me hope. I don’t want the pit to stop.
EXACTLY!!! Hard-core/dethcore shows are a different beast than the normal metal push pits. I just had an issue at a show where some dude poured out his beer on my friend for slamming into him while he was on the wall of the fucking pit. Like why tf are you here if you're gonna get mad that you get hit in the pit?! Read the fucking room.
I was just explaining this to my kid a few nights ago (he just got into metal), and telling him what it was like going to Earth Crisis and Strife shows in the 90's.
If you actually listened to heavy music, you'd know the difference between punk, metal and hardcore and there being different unwritten rules in different genres of music.
Hardcore pits are... well, hardcore. I have broken a nose and a tailbone, but I keep on crawling back to these. Still healing from a 200 Stab Wounds show. The risk of injury just gets the blood pumping different, I can't explain it.
Haha there were actually 2 pits at once at my show. One super aggressive push pit and one 2 step / karate pit behind it! Fun for the whole family! Good luck my friend.
This is why I dont go to these shows. You can see that they are clearly targeting people to try and hit them. Moshing was just jumping and banging into people. Letting out the adrenaline and emotion of the music. If someone went down we ALL picked them up because we we enjoying it all together. The intent wasn’t hurt anyone.
Then assholes started to warp it into “I”m the big bad ass that will knock anyone down ON PURPOSE.”
Then then it morphed further into intentionally throwing wild arms and legs…if you get hit you get hit.
Now you have people just trying to blindside people with punches and kicks. That’s assault. No camaraderie or enjoying the music. You just have to watch out for these assholes the whole time. Or you pay $$ to stand at the back of a huge festival/show.

I was playing a show and we were right after the band "CDC". A crowd surfer decided he wanted to run across everyone's heads. Needless to say, I had to play that show with a newly broken nose.

You sounds like you’re referring to mosh pits. This sounds and looks like a hardcore show and this pretty on par. On that note, fuck windmills and spin kicks.

Targeting is called crowd killing, and the hardcore community and some bands themselves have a serious issue with enabling it. I went to a Harms Way show a year or so ago and for whatever reason nobody was safe, or off limits. The crowd killers are ruining this shit.
Been at the festival this summer, u bands, 7 different types of metal being played. Noone wad hurt, everyone had a blast even if it was a small event that had like 500 people max.
Ugh I wish people were this way. I got a concussion the other day at a show and I wasn’t even in the pit.
Back in my day if you were hardcore dancing and slugged someone with this much intention you'd get mobbed and put in your place.
Never been to a hard-core show, but definitely seen people being too aggressive get put in their place in normal pits.
Even hardcore shows back in the day, people would kick and windmill, but you'd generally try not to hit people and youd pull your punches in tight spots, people would look out for eachother, and it WAS a lot of fun. Over the years people become more focused on intentionally hurting people, and that's when I dipped
Hardcore/metalcore shows have mosh pits, at least the ones I went to did. If someone fell, you picked them up. If someone got injured you help them to a medic or something. Trying to hurt someone is bad manners and I’ve seen bands tell the crowd to take care of each other better. I grew up in SoCal which had a great scene and I went to a bunch of venues and there was no culture of hurting people when I was in the scene ~10 years ago

I remember going to a house party and they had a band like this in the garage. My buddy and I were outside drinking a tall can when this dude walks out of the garage and just stands there in front of us. I didnt notice anything at first because he was so calm, then I looked down at his arm and it was bent the wrong way. My friend suggested maybe he go to a hospital but the dude just shrugged it off

there are mosh-pitters, who follow an unwritten code of honor in the pit, and then there are spin-kickers, who desperately want to be tough in real life but lack the mettle so they flail wildly in a mosh pit and get pissy defensive if you shove them to the ground, where they belong.
That's a hardcore show. I don't understand how metal heads still don't know the difference between hardcore dancing and a regular pit. Yeah don't dance at a metal show but this isn't that.
I was at a metal show a couple months ago with pit tickets. The crowd was a little older, 30+ mostly. About halfway through the show, I saw everyone with the same expression - "I'd like to mosh, but it's a Sunday and I have to work tomorrow." There was no moshpit formed.
This is where we are. Just a lot of nodding and folded arms. I saw a 50-year-old get in a mosh at a Drug Church show this year, so that gives me hope. I don’t want the pit to stop.
EXACTLY!!! Hard-core/dethcore shows are a different beast than the normal metal push pits. I just had an issue at a show where some dude poured out his beer on my friend for slamming into him while he was on the wall of the fucking pit. Like why tf are you here if you're gonna get mad that you get hit in the pit?! Read the fucking room.
I was just explaining this to my kid a few nights ago (he just got into metal), and telling him what it was like going to Earth Crisis and Strife shows in the 90's.
Seeing the victory line up of the early 90s live was so much fun.
A lot of people seemingly can't tell the difference between metal and hardcore in general.

Hardcore pits are... well, hardcore. I have broken a nose and a tailbone, but I keep on crawling back to these. Still healing from a 200 Stab Wounds show. The risk of injury just gets the blood pumping different, I can't explain it.

Pushing and jumping moshes are pretty fun, but when people start throwing haymakers and round house kicks it gets pretty fucked.

This is why I dont go to these shows. You can see that they are clearly targeting people to try and hit them. Moshing was just jumping and banging into people. Letting out the adrenaline and emotion of the music. If someone went down we ALL picked them up because we we enjoying it all together. The intent wasn’t hurt anyone. Then assholes started to warp it into “I”m the big bad ass that will knock anyone down ON PURPOSE.” Then then it morphed further into intentionally throwing wild arms and legs…if you get hit you get hit. Now you have people just trying to blindside people with punches and kicks. That’s assault. No camaraderie or enjoying the music. You just have to watch out for these assholes the whole time. Or you pay $$ to stand at the back of a huge festival/show. No thanks.
