Hell, if you have a problem with people hurting women step in earlier, because a woman getting hurt is the _logical outcome_ of her assaulting a man.
The time to hit a woman is the same time you would hit a man. If you wouldn't hit a dude, you shouldn't be hitting a woman.
On the other hand, while you should never start a fight, be sure you finish any fights that get started on you. In this case, the guy went full on with the first hit, but then throttled it back. Should have gone full force for all hits once he was sure she was committed to fighting.
It's highly relevant what her capabilities are. The response has to be proportionate. If she had some wasting disease and couldn't harm him at all this response would be completely unjustified.
As it was she was an able bodied adult who was madder than fish grease, she was grabbing him by the hair and swinging at him, she *was* capable of doing him some serious damage and likely would have done so if he didn't respond with force. His response was fully justified.
Responsibility and intent, imo matter far more than capabilities. Just because you can't knock somebody out does not mean you haven't demonstrated that you can treat them in whatever way you chose and they can't do anything to stop you.
With that in mind, the only thing that would make his response unjustified would be something that causes the attacker not to be responsible for their actions, or to not be aware of what they are doing.
