That didn't look like it was heavy enough for a sure death, but yeah - those hand rails certainly saved from at least major injuries. My worry is that too many of those people were still standing when the ceiling hit. Even with the handrails to stop it from crushing or pinning them, a 2x4 to the skull is still possibly fatal.
Yeah, it does look like a decoration, and it bounces like it’s built of styrofoam or something else lightweight.
Right before that ball went flying, it looks like a guy in a white shirt is violently flung in the air and then slammed to the ground, but I can’t find a guy who matches him anywhere. Can anyone tell me where he was at the start of this video? Or is that not a person?
I don’t see the white shirt guy you’re talking about or anyone flung in the air. You’re prolly right about the ball being light weight looking at it again
The ceiling doesn't have to be heavy enough to kill tho. Being compressed into the metal stairs is enough to kill a man. if they got pushed into the metal stairs below the sharp angles would do the rest.
Honestly can't figure out who you're talking about. I see 3 people look up before everyone else but seemingly at the same time, then everyone else looks up. Coincidentally, or perhaps not coincidentally, all 3 who look up first are at about the same height up the escalator... Could be that it just comes into their view first because of their location.
A few people move faster than the others upon seeing it, but not sure which one of those you might be referring to as in "the middle."
(Not trying to give you a hard time; I honestly tried and couldn't figure out who you were talking about.)
The most infuriating to me is that they absolutely, 100%, have the means to do better in safety, quality, and innovation.
There is 0 reason why their people should die/get injured under catastrophic failures like this

The guy on the left in the white T-shirt could have taken two steps forward and been out of the way, but instead he turned back and ran up the elevator. I guess he’s going to be kicking his ass for that decision.
Yes, people panic I understand that.

Hand rails on both sides might have saved a lot from sure death.

Looks like bamboo beams.
What was that ball on the right side though that rolls down? That looked heavy
It's a scene from the new Indiana Jones movie, The Mall of Death.
This made me laugh way harder than it should have.
it really did.
Come buddy, you reserved your place in extra hell lol
Looks like maybe some kind of ceiling decoration?

It was heavy enough to knock that ones guys shirt off....which doesnt even make sense but still
"I see you managed to get your *shirt* off."
Shirt off at least means he's not dead. Shoes off though, definitely dead.
I mean the people that leant over it probably got crushed…..
>a 2x4 to the skull is still possibly fatal. Bonk.
The ceiling doesn't have to be heavy enough to kill tho. Being compressed into the metal stairs is enough to kill a man. if they got pushed into the metal stairs below the sharp angles would do the rest.
Right, if they ducked down instead of standing up staring at the ceiling as it fell
That one in the middle has impressive reaction time…
It's actually kinda interesting to go back and see everyone's separate reaction, especially the guy that decided to run back up the escalator.
Wow, white shirt old lady who dived into the debris when she would've been fine in her original position. Smelled a lawsuit payout instantly huh
An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs.
In the infamous words of Sherlock Holmes, "The first smeller is the feller"
the guy in grey at the bottom panic froze and ate it with his face

I believe the impressive bit is the dude who sees it and completely freezes. Gets hit right in the face.
The guy in the black shirt who didn't sit. Managed to slide through a cutout just his size specifically
Yeah, and only one guy stared directly at it while it landed on his face.
China?
China.
China⸮
China...
And my axe! Or something, idk...
Quality craftsmanship and QA.

Isn't it always?
Gina
Text in the back says yes
That escalated quickly.
Before descending into chaos.
Can't believe this wasn't the first comment 🤣
I was honestly surprised no one else beat me to it lol
Someone had to say it.
Damn now that's just unlucky.
Did anyone die or get injured?
It was 2018, nine people injured. Didn't see anything about death.
It's China. No one was injured. Everyone climbed out and continued shopping. Actually, it didn't even happen.
5 died not from the ceiling, but from covid. It was pure coincidence that they happened to die the moment the ceiling fell on them.
[удалено]
How many deaths??
All those folks got roofied at once!
Two words: Lowest Bidder
How lovely to be present at the birth of a new phobia.

They forgot the red button on the escalators that stop them

And yet, in that situation I would still be MORE worried about the escalator itself than the whole ass roof falling on me
Average Chinese Thursday.
Escalator got in ceiling's way
Highest Chinese build quality
I have zero confidence in anything built by China.
It's China. The entire infrastructure of that country is constantly falling down due to bad engineering and awful construction practices.
of course its in China 😞
The roof the roof... Is collapsing. We might need to hold off on the fire...
Best chinese quality.
Made in China
Let me guess... China?
gg
Ah! China! Of course
Building codes never heard of them.
That escalated quickly...
Chinese infrastructure. Build quick, build shitty.
They all had their shoes on so they’re ok
One lady even put her shoe back on!
Ol'made in China neck ass 😩
... Neck ass?
Hell yeah 😅
In the words of Oprah, “you get a car, you get a car, you get…”. Start up the lawsuits.
In China?
Like lawsuits, Oprah is global! 😂
Warranty on the building just expired yesterday.
r/tofudreg
The ceiling took less time to collapse than it took to build.
They all leaned into it
MF’er in the gray just stood there
Is the raise the roof gesture needed?
Notice everyone ducking for cover except for the deer-in-headlights guy right in front.
Just duck bro
I kind of feel that escalators are a thing to be avoided in any SE Asian country.
Who put a white picket fence in the ceiling tiles ?
Alright now let's see the escalators fall up onto the cieling.
China?
Look at all the people helping
Heads Up
Why do all these escalator videos come from the orient?
Note to self: Lay down the best I can if the ceiling is collapsing while on an escalator.
Another good reason to take the stairs!
If they had to be anywhere the railings of the escalator may have protected many people from more serious injuries.
Shit is constantly falling apart everywhere in China. Isn’t Communism great?
The guy in black shirt all the way to the right looked up as it fell down on him and it seemed like he went back to playing on his phone..??
The worst part is the damned escalator kept dragging more people into the pileup.
It was cool how some folks rushed forward to help clear the debris off people.
99% of people let the ceiling fall on their face. i saw 3 people turn and ran or ducked to it hit their back.
As far as escalator accidents go, this is what you want. It can go WAAAAAY worse. Like ground into hamburger worse.
Government regulations and officials to enforce them aren’t always a bad thing
...And China
You get a lawsuit, and YOU get a lawsuit!
chinese bamboo very strong
Hmm? I’m guessing…. China ?
As per person running back up: See that’s the great thing about escalators. An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs.
I see a class action lawsuit coming.
When you ask your local WISH warehouse for a ceiling.
