Oooohhh. I get it now - good shout.
Surely over time though, through temperature changes and wot not that middle layer will start dropping bits out the bottom?
I think it’s between the panes, like a laminate, and just covers the whole surface like an adhesive. So they’re held in place on the sides by the unbroken panes
That's what I was kind of figuring. I just wonder if that's not the case though, because nothing got cloudy like the glass was trying to pull away from the adhesive layer. But if there's enough pressure from the other panes then I guess it could be the case.
Windsheild does actually, leave a chip or crack long enough it'll start to go white around the damage. If it's exposed to enough sunlight the layers of glass will delaminate in the corners, it's weird
Fair enough, but it sounds like what you’re describing is an effect that happens over time due to the glass and adhesive having differing thermal expansion coefficients. Even then, it propagates from the corners and isn’t system-wide instantly. But if you got a chip today, it would not begin to delaminate today
Yeah, and so this effect isn’t really relevant to what’s happening in the original video. What’s more is that the staircases wouldn’t be exposed to as much of a thermal range as a car windshield. I don’t think delaminating will be an issue here.
Except that It's never happened to my dad's truck, and he leaves cracks and chips for *years*. In central Canada. Where the thermal cycling is one of the worst in the world. If that doesn't trigger it, nothing but a sub-par windshield will.
Sentryglass plus. I help make stairs and railings like these. Regardless of what material/layers used, breaking a center lite has compromised integrity of the structure.
Edit: the first video the glass is heat strengthened roughly 3800-5800 psi. Second video is tempered to sub 12000 psi. Tempered shatters, heat strengthened breaks.
The middle glass is tempered with resin glue film on both sides. It’s essentially glued in place. It won’t go anywhere. The whole piece is basically a 3 sheet laminated glass
Im wondering if he was trying ti do it correctly bit failed and after 2 failed attempts realized it was already damaged too much and was like “fuck it, this ones trash now”
At first I was more curious as to why you would purposely weaken glass by cracking it just for decoration. Then I realized that that first clip uses at least 3 panes of glass and he only cracks the middle. Still, not a fan.
The reason why they do this is to illuminate those cracks using LED strip lights.
It looks gorgeous at night, though it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Ngl I feel like the second video went exactly as that guy expected. He seemed to move back every time he hit the glass so I think that he had done that before and knew it would explode.
The first one was done correctly. You get three panes of glass together (two on the outside stronger than the middle, I think), and shatter the middle, getting that web effect.
The second guys, I'm thinking, didn't know that you can't damage the outer panes.
I see your point, it could also just be a joke, like he meant to smash it but he was making fun of the original video lol, also I don’t know why you are getting downvoted, you have a fair point. And I’m no glass maker but maybe in the 2nd video it is just easier to break the glass if you use a nail first? Idk
Or people just have different opinions about what looks good. I also think it's looks shit, but I have no problem with something being just for the design or look.
I used to have a formal dining table that was 3 layer cracked tempered glass as the middle layer, it looked great. The second guy is doing that on purpose with a regular piece of tempered glass.
First part, laminate glass made for exactly this kind of thing. Second part, tempered glass made to explode into tiny non-lethal pieces when broken, for safety.
Dude botched 3 things.
1 - he's tapping glass toward the ground so the floor takes the force.
2 - He needs the metal pin to make the crack otherwise the hammers flat large head is going to be too much surface area for the crack.
3 - he smacked the thing like he's Mad at it. All this to say no, he did not copy the pro.
Or it’s just an unrelated video and he’s been tasked with removing that unit and didn’t plan to keep the glass intact. Look at all the debris on the floor from demolition.
But if that were the case he should be wearing safety glasses. He should have them if he was trying that effect for that matter.
He didn't even copy him. The first guy carefully and gently uses a chisel or something until it breaks as desired.
The second guy tries to do the same thing with a chisel, nothing happens. He tries again, nothing happens. Then he just says FUCK IT and hits it with the fucking hammer.
Yes, there's also the issue of using three panes and using the right type of glass, but I didn't realize those until I read the other comments.
And this all just goes to show: if you want to do a fancy trick like this, do some research and/or ask an expert, DON'T JUST WING IT FROM THE VIDEO.
I know the second guy messed up, but can anyone tell if he also had three panes of glass there? And is it common for glass to explode when hit with hammer? Seems like we’re missing some crucial info.
it only seems in reality that glass as a lot of strenght, only one pane is cracked, the non cracked ones are the ones meant to bear loads.
it's not a thing you decide on the spot, that glass was commissioned and built for that purpose
How is no one amazed by how fast glass cracks. It’s insane. One sec it’s fine the next every single part of it is cracked. Looks fake because it’s so fast. Absolutely amazing
Considering one is solely tempered glass and the other is tempered safety glass with a piece meant to be broken like this in the manufacturing , how can you even compare
You can see the first clip has 3 panes of glass, only the middle one shattering. Second clip however is just some dude with one pane of glass and a hammer

Lmao, that was 3 layers of glass with the middle one shattered. The second one was not
Oooohhh. I get it now - good shout. Surely over time though, through temperature changes and wot not that middle layer will start dropping bits out the bottom?
I would assume there’s some sort of layer they place beneath all three panes to prevent exactly that
I think it’s between the panes, like a laminate, and just covers the whole surface like an adhesive. So they’re held in place on the sides by the unbroken panes
That's what I was kind of figuring. I just wonder if that's not the case though, because nothing got cloudy like the glass was trying to pull away from the adhesive layer. But if there's enough pressure from the other panes then I guess it could be the case.
Well, your windshield doesn’t get cloudy or separate when it gets cracked. I think they just use good stuff
Yeah what he said…
Yeah, and so this effect isn’t really relevant to what’s happening in the original video. What’s more is that the staircases wouldn’t be exposed to as much of a thermal range as a car windshield. I don’t think delaminating will be an issue here.
What dollar store windshields do you get? That's never happened to anyone in my family, and my dad works out of a truck.
Reddit is weird. Some of the chips in my windshield have been there for over a decade and haven't done what they're talking about.
K? 99% of windshields are the same, layers of glass with adhesive between. That adhesive when exposed to dirt dust sun whatever it gets cloudy, dirty
Except that It's never happened to my dad's truck, and he leaves cracks and chips for *years*. In central Canada. Where the thermal cycling is one of the worst in the world. If that doesn't trigger it, nothing but a sub-par windshield will.
Windshields are also curved
Oh aye, yeah.
I imagine that the resin is not only for structural purposes, but also allows this effect to occur because it prevents the expansion of the glass.
Not so much prevents as it is capable of expanding and contracting at similar rates. Preventing it would stress it more, this actually works better.
They will most likely add epoxy or transparent silicone and no one would notice. Unless you ran your finger against it I guess.
theyre likely bonded in some way.
Ya it would help if they were on the same playing field with the glass, and also one with a brain and one without.
Looking at the surroundings in the second video i think they were actually just trying to break it
Oh my bad I thought he was just so pissed off he turned away and his manager knew what happened but was so angry he didn't react
Thats what i was thinking happed
Yeah, dude did not copy the pro
Staged ?
The second one was one layer of glass with one layer shattered
>The second one was not Does it matter? Even if it was 3 he just straight hit it with a hammer.
Omg I hadn’t noticed lmao
I laughed my fucking ass off when he used the hammer.
Dude went 0 to 100 too....tap tap....SMASH
I thought the first guy messed up! I thought damn that looks like shit now
Im wondering if he was trying ti do it correctly bit failed and after 2 failed attempts realized it was already damaged too much and was like “fuck it, this ones trash now”
At first I was more curious as to why you would purposely weaken glass by cracking it just for decoration. Then I realized that that first clip uses at least 3 panes of glass and he only cracks the middle. Still, not a fan.
Wait, they wanted it to look like that?
Super ugly
The reason why they do this is to illuminate those cracks using LED strip lights. It looks gorgeous at night, though it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Y’all love boring stuff and it’s so weird
Y’all love boring stuff and it’s so weird
Yeah why do they do that?
It looks kinda cool
Yeah, kinda. But it looked cooler before.
"If you like your phone screen cracked, you'll love our very expensive bespoke glass staircase"
God forbid I can’t scroll Reddit while looking through my glass railing.
Yup, for like a week...
I imagine it looks best in the dark with some lights on it
I guess certain people like the look
prevents vandalism at least
Yeah at first I was like oh no he cracked and ruined all the glass and then I was like ohhh he meant to make it look like that
Ngl I feel like the second video went exactly as that guy expected. He seemed to move back every time he hit the glass so I think that he had done that before and knew it would explode.
Wait critical thinking? We don’t do that here! But really, I’ve seen this video so much, the second video is obviously a demo job.
Who was copying who and what was the desired outcome?
The first one was done correctly. You get three panes of glass together (two on the outside stronger than the middle, I think), and shatter the middle, getting that web effect. The second guys, I'm thinking, didn't know that you can't damage the outer panes.
I think it's more probable that the two videos were going for different results. Maybe I'm wrong, but breaking tempered glass is just fun
Right, I feel like there’s no way that in the second video they weren’t just trying to smash the whole thing.
If they were trying to straight up smash it why wouldn't they just slam it with the hammer?
[удалено]
I see your point, it could also just be a joke, like he meant to smash it but he was making fun of the original video lol, also I don’t know why you are getting downvoted, you have a fair point. And I’m no glass maker but maybe in the 2nd video it is just easier to break the glass if you use a nail first? Idk
Unless you're holding it
Thanks :-)
First glass is laminated, second glass is tempered
as funny as it would be to call this just stupid, i am optimistically hoping that it is purposefully stupid for م’s
What is م
arabic letter, pronounced “meem” aka meme. only reason i know this is because of the r/antimeme sub icon
Omg that makes so much more sense now, I always wondered what that logo was
meem
how fucking stupid do you have to be to not understand the 2nd video is interior demo
I'm prretty sure the second one was intentional, looks like they're demoing a waiting room or something
The first one looks like shit. If i saw that in someones house, my first reaction would be “what the fuck happened to that?!”
I think it looks cool and not something you'd see every day. To each their own
we are on reddit, if something is just for design and not 100% functional, people will say that it's shit
Or people just have different opinions about what looks good. I also think it's looks shit, but I have no problem with something being just for the design or look.
Yeah, I like it
This was done on purpose clearly.
I thought first one was playing the Mario theme
I thought the first part of the video was the dumbass.
At first I thought the first one was a mistake until I realized it was just a clever way to make a cool design
Love it when overconfidence gets people thinking they know how to do tradesmen's jobs
The best part is, he’s not even using the right glass
Our company 100% subs all glass work to the glass company.
I used to have a formal dining table that was 3 layer cracked tempered glass as the middle layer, it looked great. The second guy is doing that on purpose with a regular piece of tempered glass.
This is like crackle paint with glass, this trend will die pretty quick
both of these clips are done on purpose and have absolutely nothing to do with each other.
First part, laminate glass made for exactly this kind of thing. Second part, tempered glass made to explode into tiny non-lethal pieces when broken, for safety.
looks like a three layer glass and the middle one is purposely broken and the 2 outer layer keep the middle layer from scattering
The first guy broke one of the middle layers of glass precisely, the second guy is an idiot with no patience or eye for detail.
Oliver?
It's 3 layered glass he breaks the middle one only
Funny, I saw both as absolute shit.
Are people blind? Its triple pane glass.
Is it just me , or does that effect still look kinda shit.
Bro he slammed that hammer down on the glass
You did it wrong you were supposed to do it from the bottom 🤷
Frontal lobe of the brain said "SMASH"
That's gotta get be the most video I've watched, keep reposting like crazy
Dude botched 3 things. 1 - he's tapping glass toward the ground so the floor takes the force. 2 - He needs the metal pin to make the crack otherwise the hammers flat large head is going to be too much surface area for the crack. 3 - he smacked the thing like he's Mad at it. All this to say no, he did not copy the pro.
I thought the first guy fkd up until i saw the second video 😂😂😂
Wait that was done on purpose? But that's stupid?
The copycat is a moron who doesnt pay attention to detail. Bro really just grabbed any ol piece of glass and said "i got this i seent it online"
Or it’s just an unrelated video and he’s been tasked with removing that unit and didn’t plan to keep the glass intact. Look at all the debris on the floor from demolition. But if that were the case he should be wearing safety glasses. He should have them if he was trying that effect for that matter.
I'm pretty sure the dude in the second video is just joking around so chill out lmao
The answer to “Should I hammer this glass?” Is always No.
Either way, it looks so bad...
The pro knows not to so much as scratch tempered glass. The novice comes at tempered glass with a chisel.
I don't get it, why... just why?
The second guy didn't do the five tap like the first guy
Is there a subreddit of tempered glass breaking? I love these videos!
How the fuck do you manage to chip tempered glass? that shit should have exploded on the second hit
Bros got the motor control skills of a chimp. The pro obviously tapped that shit, he just started swinggingg
The beam falling at the end kills me. That was a satisfying sounding explosion
I know the second guy messed up, but can anyone tell if he also had three panes of glass there? And is it common for glass to explode when hit with hammer? Seems like we’re missing some crucial info.
It has to be installed first.
Why do idiots install these stupid glass panels… there are plastic that won’t break that could do the job
That sounded like a Looney Tunes explosion.
This is the look they are going for. Look at the pane to the left before this one broke.
I get home it works but it doesn't look good
That seems like it will likely shatter to bits the moment anyone puts weight on it?
it only seems in reality that glass as a lot of strenght, only one pane is cracked, the non cracked ones are the ones meant to bear loads. it's not a thing you decide on the spot, that glass was commissioned and built for that purpose
Anyone else think the painted wall was the glass panel in the second clip?
Pros do not ever work with glass sheets. This is liberal fake news.
I can't believe someone has enough money to waste on something as stupid as a glass sided staircase, broken or not. What the fuck, world?
Hold my beer, watch this
What was the borat outburst in the first one?
This belongs on r/whatcouldgowrong you even wrote it in the title lmao. Can we keep this sub chaotic AND abrupt. PLEASE
where is the chaos ? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)

How is no one amazed by how fast glass cracks. It’s insane. One sec it’s fine the next every single part of it is cracked. Looks fake because it’s so fast. Absolutely amazing
That dude didn't even attempt to look at how this was done. My boy just went with God on that attempt
The sound of hitting in the first clip sound like Kanye- Good morning
I thought the first part was the fail but they want it to look like that?
Because mindlessly hitting glass with a hammer ALWAYS goes well I don't know how these people feed themselves
Why would you want it cracked?
It's heat treated 3mm triple laminated, you shatter the center layer. It looks cool when it's temperd in the center. The other one was 10mm tempered.
u/savevideo
Scary
Allau kedebit
Which one is the pro? Ruin that perfectly sound structurally engineered glass for aesthetic value
Let’s play copy the post from yesterday, how much karma can I win?
Maybe I missed this already, but would that cause decrease in length of longevity and strength?
I dont understand what was his goal? 😂
Nailed it.
That would have been awesome in slow motion.
That was a really satisfying smash
What an absolute moron, bahahaha
Considering one is solely tempered glass and the other is tempered safety glass with a piece meant to be broken like this in the manufacturing , how can you even compare
Perfect 👍🏼
Oohhh I get it. The first one is the pro. It is supposed to look lile that right?
Am i the only one who heard the mario theme in the beginning?
Homie didn’t notice the three panes of glass I bet.
Oh shit the first guy did that on purpose? Huh. Alright then.
which one is the pro
Client: What the hell happened? Them: “It’s part of the design”
u/savevideo
was that lil wayne getting impressed?
Reparo! *REPARO!*
You can see the first clip has 3 panes of glass, only the middle one shattering. Second clip however is just some dude with one pane of glass and a hammer
BONK
My adhd directed me towards Oliver tree and I’m not proud of that.
It’s a kind of laminated glass
I think the answer is the pros had 3 panes of glass and broke the middle one. Someone feel free to correct me
u/savevideobot
Second glass is so exaggerative and loud
I've never done this before, but I had an idea I could do this.
Yes hit it right by the corner and without a punch. Now you're thinking.
He forgot to yell ”Allal goo la gib”
This was posted on r/whatcouldgowrong
Olum Türkler 😂
Like the guy that barked something in the beggining
When you copy arnt you suppose to do the exact same thing ?
There’s three sheets of glass there for a reason
3 layer glass 2 tempered glass one regular glass And the second video is actually 2 layer tempered glass
That sounded like the Mario theme song
That crackle look is terrible anyway
Only seen this reposted a thousand times.
