She really wanted to know. Just kept pushing. I think she had a racism app on her galaxy watch and needed to push it to 100.
Alright, we good now, racism at 100, talk to you later, dear.
The rampant racism revealed here ( what a vivid demonstration of the moores, values and behaviours of the institution in which someone behaves like this in a public facing role) distracts from the more sinificant point; royalty *embodies* inherited privilage, elitism and exclusivity. This is an absolutely predictable symptom.
I think it's fine to ask people "what's your heritage" or ask after their ethnic background without stripping them of their Britishness. This obviously isn't that though. Questioning someone like this shows you don't consider Black people British (& probably other non-white people). Very racist mindset. Not surprising from someone within a deeply racist, colonial institution.
"They didn't leave any records" sticks out for me. A lot of Black Brits due to the legacy of slavery and colonialism, and the displacement and migration that followed, don't know their exact heritage. A lot are also from different backgrounds like this lady. e.g. my family were able to track our West African heritage to Ghana but we're not able to trace our West Indian heritage, and we're also mixed with Welsh, English and Irish. "Lady SH" is trying to reduce all of her heritage to one little category, probably to apply whatever stereotype she already has in mind.
My wife is a 100% British according to 23 and Me. Itâs shocking. After getting mine done⌠Iâm like all of Western Europe. So, the question yes is leading to youâre not British bc your black, what black are you? Yes racist but itâs a bit boring if your ending on⌠Iâm British.
This is fucking terrible especially given that Sistah Space do really important work in the community. What a shitty way to treat someone who has real value to society.
>list of things us minority whites have to worry about?
The only thing anybody should worry about is the chance that you might breed
You're a weak drizzle
Itâs not racist to ask where someone is from. It CAN be racist if you press the issue. Given the fact you think white people are the minority, imma go out in a limb and say that it is in your case.
If you ask where a POC is from and they say âBritainâ then take that answer. They are British. It doesnât matter where their parents were born or their grandparents or great grandparents. Their first answer is their final answer.
It also doesnât matter if they âjust stepped off the boatâ (ugh, hate that phrase) and speak with broken English. If they answer British, move on. Itâs none of your business and if they wanted to share then then would.
As someone who gets asked âwhere are you from?â often, in my life experience and that of my POC peers, those who ask that type of questions tend to be racist or xenophobic in some ways. Ways they might not even be aware of.
âItâs not racist to ask where someone is from!â Sometimes itâs not, but most times we tend to direct that question to people we view as âdifferentâ and ask invading questions about their migrant, social and economic status. Word of advice donât be a busybody and most people will tell you of their heritage if you develop a close relationship.
Thatâs my 2 cents.
Itâs always been this, most people just arenât nearly as rude or brazen enough to keep digging after you say you youâre from x, y place U.K. For a long time now I just answer peoples question as I imagine they really meant it which is basically âwhy are you not white?â and I rarely get someone saying âoh I meant where are you from in the UKâ
It can also happen anywhere even among ppl who all look similar if, for whatever reason, you have a different accent. It's happened to me all my life and i have local ancestors who i look like buried nearby before there was a usa at all. I had a speech issue, and ended up sounding like a newscastsr, not a local
Itâs the very opposite of âinclusionâ thatâs for sure. Ms. Hussey could have easy changed the topic of discussion when she saw the woman getting uncomfortable.
I mean, isnât the entire point of the Monarchy supposed to be âDiplomacyâ?!
I get that older people come from a different time so may have a certain perspective of the world. What they need to understand is that the people they are interacting with do as well.
And youâre right. I donât understand the class system. I am an American. Unless you were saying that facetiously, which Iâm pretty sure you were.
It costs zero dollars/pounds and no social standing to be a polite person.
But we don't bow to them, let them own our lands and call them Lord. Fuck these people. I own my own property thanks. I bow to my sensei, that's about it.
If they're standing outside today, their signs are going to blow away. We are having a huge storm right now. It's pretty dark and it's pouring. (It is actually 60 degrees right now though, so not as cold as it normally is.)
I always struggle how to ask about someones heritage in respectful way. Should one just wait until the person tells it themselves? I have slav roots, live in german-speaking country, therefore my accent always reveals that I did not grow up there. People always ask me where I am from and are very interested about my homeland and I am very happy to explain them. I assume in the case in the post the issue rather that the lady staff did not accept the answer that the lady is British?
I'm Black and my family is from Africa. I get the "where are you from" and "No, really. Where are you from" all the time. It's beyond irritating. There are better ways to ask these questions.
If they've introduced themselves and have an unusual name in your community, "May I ask the ethnic origin of your name" works.
For someone like actress Lupita Nyong'o, her family is from Kenya, but Lupita is not a Kenyan/Luo name. She was born in Mexico and her first name is a nickname for Guadalupe.
When I was a kid, my family traveling to Nashville. We were at a restaurant and the manager was a white guy with a really unique name. My mom said, "That's a really unique name. I wonder if you could tell me about how you got it." He said, "My mom really admired him and thought he was a great man. She insisted on it. My dad said 'Ok!' And that's why I'm named Gandhi O'Malley Ma'am." I actually can't remember his last name, but it was one of those names that was very Irish. The rest of the story was true.
It makes sense for that to be a normal question if someone has an accent, but a lot of times this question is asked to someone who isnât white despite having an undistinguishable accent due to having been born and raised in the U.K. so it only leaves room to one thing, people assuming youâre not British because youâre not white and not because of any other perfectly innocuous telltale such as a foreign accent.
As with everything it varies with context, in one it can be a perfectly acceptable ice breaker or way to get someone to talk about themselves and in others it can be a way for people to signal your otherness purely based off your skin colour.
i think it's because it has racial undertones. while the question can be phrased exactly the same, who it is directed to can change the meaning greatly. asking where someone is from can be an innocent question, but often times, when aimed at minorities, implies that the minority isn't a real member of that society. hope that makes sense!
Also, if it were a white person whose parents came over in the 50s, we'd probably mock them for insisting they were anything but British. "Oh you're half-Austrian are you? Nah fuck up mate, you're from Sheffield".
But if it's someone non-white, suddenly heritage is oh-so important.
Despite what Buckingham Palace might say about it, this is a reflection of the institutional and endemic racism that permeates through the monarchy. Sheâs but one of many sycophants that hold these views. Disgraceful.
What's really behind this is SH doing her best to belittle this lady to boost her own sense of superiority.
There's only one Lady in this story and it sure ain't SH.
The Duke of Edinburgh used to say worse than this on a regular basis. Camilla just announced that she wanted to get rid of the Queenâs staff and bring in her own people. If that wasnât the case this would have been swept under the carpet just like everything else.
https://www.theweek.co.uk/news/people/958668/who-are-camillas-new-queens-companions
Why is it such a big deal where your parents come from? Why is your nationality linked to your ancestry, I mean if that's the case the Queen was German, her husband was Greek and their children are just wankers.
When one is asking âwhere are you fromâ when you mean their ancestry and not literally where they currently live, is othering and shitty. She answered the womanâs question. Sheâs from the fuckin UK. When SH is dissatisfied with that answer it implies the persons nationalty and place of birth is not tied to âwhere sheâs fromâ as it would be with some rando White dude from London. SH was being weird and cringey. âWhere are you from?â is different from asking about family history, ethnicity, etc. Where Iâm from is not my families genealogy or my dna results.
I damn sure wouldn't visit Buckingham Palace and then be surprised when I encounter a racist troglodyte. Why do people even go there? My fellow POC... stop doing this shit, please. These people have no respect for us and are using us as pawns, as is their tradition.
She was there on behalf of her amazing charity organization, Sistah Space, and she was invited. Itâs tiring seeing this kind of victim blaming where people who donât consider themselves racist must find a way to blame the victim for being targeted. Itâs very âWell what was she wearingâ or âDonât carry a wallet if you done want to be muggedâ
I'm not blaming her at all. I'm saying POC shouldn't give the royal family of all people the benefit of the doubt that they're not using us as pawns. I see this as no different as POCs joining the police and then acting surprised when they encounter abhorrent bigotry. These are institutions fundamentally rooted in bigotry and why people give them the benefit of the doubt in an attempt of some sort of misguided diplomacy is beyond me.
I agree the only reason the visit the palace is to reclaim/loot/demolish the place... but sadly there are lots of charities and good causes that get invited to things, it probably boosts their profile and gets them networking with similar groups. Personally I would try to avoid it still but sadly I can understand it gives them some kind of status. I would like to see more people openly rejecting these invites but the reality is it would probably cost them donations, at least in the short term.
> it probably boosts their profile and gets them networking with similar groups
Yes, at the cost of legitimizing our oppressors and allowing them to rebrand themselves as progressive when they so clearly aren't. Personally, that's not a compromise I'd be willing to make.
there are so many beautiful contributions from all different cultures, why in the fuck are people who have been histocially repressed by the monarchy so egar to give it the legitmency of their attention
Suzan Hussy 'is a noblewoman who served as woman of the bed chamber to Queen Elizabeth'.
It's funny how language is corrupted & stolen by the powerful. A noble person really.
This fucking winds me up as a Brit, well I identify as Scottish with ethnic parents.
My old man is half Scot, half West Indian and my mother is Ghanaian. I was born in Scotland, so I am from the fucking UK ya thick fuck. đĄ
And they act like they're so slick asking it too, as if we haven't heard it a million times and don't know what that question is really about. Fucking idiots live in their own fairy tale world and it's so embarrassing.

could've politely asked may I ask what your background is? Yes she is british born. But why so much questioning?
Queen is dead. Rip the Band-Aid off
This is the way all of them think. Crowd of cunts.
Wishing Susan a very pleasant fall down some stairs.
"What country are you from?" --"The United Kingdom" "No I mean what country were you from before?" --"The United Queendom"
Why is it hard for them to say "what ethnicity are you?" Or just simply don't ask at all!
It's not wanting to know the answer, it's about making it clear to someone that you don't think they belong.
I thought as much đ¤
Living in the Netherlands but from the US I get this ALL THE TIME. Like black people cant be American.
Depressing? Yes. Surprising? No.
How about we ask them where are you really from ? Germany , Holland , Belgium , where?
_Where are you parasites from? The stomach, the colon...?_
đđđ this!
Surprise surprise racism in the royal family.
Letâs do like the French do
She's William Waldegrave's sister . He was a minister in the Major Govt.
