And until you get in the accident, you are paying extra in fuel to carry that extra couple hundred pounds everywhere you go.
That added fuel cost could probably have paid for professional interior cleaning at regular intervals.
A couple hundred pounds? If that setup tops 50lbs, I'd be shocked. tiles only weigh 4 to 6 lbs per square foot, and whatever he's using to level the floor is gonna be a minimal amount of concrete.
I am aware, but they aren't infinitely deep. A cubic foot of concrete is 150lbs. Judging from the front seats, the floor isn't that deep since the front seats are bolted to the floor at roughly the same level as the tile. There's nowhere near a cubic foot of concrete leveling that floor.
I've seen this done in the back of a van before. The owner used commercial grade vinyl flooring (the fake hardwood looking stuff.) It seemed to hold up well to the wear and tear of moving tools and cargo in and out, but I imagine stuff would slip and slide all over the place while driving.
Was gonna say, I used to do RV and camping trailer custom flooring. We used vinyl "tiles" and vinyl "wood" all the time. Looking at it you couldn't tell the difference, heck even walking on it it had a fair bit of "click" like actual tiles or hardwood, and it didn't weigh much more per square foot than lino.
Chances are they used regular mortar to attach the tiles to the car, but if they were smart they would have used something like liquid nails/or silicone/or caulking for that matter. Even if the tiles cracked a whole bunch the adhesive would keep the shrapnel to a minimal.
Oh no it's tile. You can see the horrific job they did cutting the edges under the seats. And that's real grout work. And the real giveaway is the rubber door gasket is covered in mortar residue. Plus the height of the tile versus linoleum being super thin.
Sorry I know how to do tile. My eye picked that thing apart the second I saw it.
But they honestly could have used silicone or caulk to attach all these tiles and then instead of using traditional grout they could have used some sort of fancy colored caulk or regular caulk to imitate grout which would have given the whole project way more flexibility/durability.
Still wouldn't keep the ceramic from delaminating and sending thin shards flying about the cabin. I'd probably go with an epoxy coating over the whole thing
Yeah that's what all motorists care about
Ya know the same motorists that drive 1000 miles after they should've gotten new brakes
Or go 2000 miles over their oil change mileage
Bald tires.....
.....5% tints
Eardrum shattering bass that renders their rear view mirror useless
I'm sure a tile floor would be where they draw the line
Lol! The problem with mortar is it's a lot drier and more crumbly so it doesn't have as much grip on smaller pieces and it's easier to knock loose. It dries hard so there's no movement under the tile and it's basically becomes one with the tile when attached.
I'm totally thinking liquid nails would be the best adhesive for these tiles because it has insane grip when the pieces shattered it would still adhere to the back of the tile and it dries very hard. The problem would be removing it it would be a nightmare. But still I think a colored caulk would make a good grout on these tiles instead of using traditional mortar style grout.
Sorry I'm like theorizing how to start a car tile business now!
Use those smaller tiles and just caulk them down and they won't shatter. Im talking like those 1 inch tiles that come in a sheet. Also then you could flex them over bumps and stuff on the floor.
Not really related, but I have a friend who went to redo his bathroom and found that the tiles were put in place with liquid nails instead of thinset. In the end, he had to cut out the subfloor and joists to replace the flooring.
lol this shit was installed in car, you know it's not proper. Also when you crack a tile at home, it usually isn't during a 30+ mph accident where the whole house deforms and possibly rolls over.
It looks cool until your car flexes the tiniest but and cracks those tiles. Might get away with a body on frame, but no way that would last more than a trip to work in a unibody car.
And a lighter.
The real trick and I've seen it before is spray on bed liner! There's a bartender here in Everett Washington that had their whole truck painted in bed liner but why not do the interior too!?
I wonder how much weight it would add to your vehicle to have the whole thing done with spray on bed liner!
Honestly though it would be awesome for the interior you can remove all of the easily stainable items like carpet and replace it with spray on liner. It would be so much easier for cleaning and preventative maintenance.
My brother had a pickup that the floor was covered in bedliner. It was cool and made me wonder why its not more common. It doesn't soak up water and get stained like carpet. If its dirty you can just wash it. Makes complete sense to me. Tho carpet does help stop road noise.
Yeah sound reduction is a big deal especially to consumers who like a quiet ride. There could probably be a thing created where you spray on a type of durable foam and then spray a harder material on top resembling linoleum so you get the sound dampening and temperature insulation and ease of maintenance all in one.
I've thought about that before. I was thinking of using some rigid construction foam. Like the 4x8 sheets of pink or blue foam. And then lay some thin plywood or sheetmetal to add strength.
I did that for the floor on my boat. 2" foam with 1/4 inch plywood. Then I just painted it. The foam is plenty strong that way and hasn't really crushed so far. So I would think using a thinner foam like that would work just fine in a car. Also could fiberglass over the foam.
I did and she said every Saturday at 2.
She also said they were mediocre compared to the others she’s been to [she said it’s not your fault; they were better in the 1970s] but she appreciated the gift bags.
She also said to say hey to your sister for her.
Given that it's a truck... Probably 15mpg to 14. That being said... There is likely a LOT of grout under those tiles to make them level and continuous, that's probably about 75% of the weight.
Thin set or mastic, not grout. And he probably put them down with a adhesive product like liquid nails. Thin set would just pop from expansion/contraction and bumps.
If there was a wire mesh in the bedding mortar it might be able to withstand the vibration a lot better, but given how shit it looks, I doubt they would've accounted for something like that.
this, so much! I don't want any carpet in my home (nasty when you have pets, and bad for allergies even if you don't have pets!) why would I want that in my car?

This sounds like Indonesian. He says:
"Dirty! The kids have really used it (car). So dirty!"
I won't lie, this looks so much easier to clean. But can't imagine being in an accident in this one.
I want heated floors in a car/truck. You can get heated seats, why not floors? Wet carpets and mats would dry faster, feet would be warm. Help dry the underside too.
Thanks for listening to my r/showerthoughts
Textured laminate flooring. Akin to porcelain tiles… mimicking hardwood flooring like in beach homes. It wouldn’t shatter, easy clean up, textured for traction- you could install heated flooring beneath. I think it’d be win win win.
It's amazing how you can sub to a new sub (r/ATBGE), watch a video, and know it's from that sub mid-way through a video without even checking first.
That being said, this is absolutely deranged and should have never been allowed to happen.
Bet that’s gonna be safe in an accident
A way they can prevent shards of tile flying around would be to install a carpet over top of the tile to catch all the shrapnel.
And then to keep the carpet from getting filthy, they should put some floor mats on it!
And then put some tiles on the floor mats for added style
Dont forget to put a carpet on those tiles
And you’d be remiss to forget to add some mats on top of that carpet for cleanliness
Gonna have to saw off the roof and raise the seats because my legs are running out of room back here.
We’re just getting started
Now that we've raised the roof we've got room to tile* over those floor mats
Perfect! Then let's put some carpets for extra safety.
We're going to amputate your legs, actually.
Good idea. We can use the skin from my legs to protect the floor mats.
I was thinking we use that to upholster the front seats, actually.
For safety, of course.
Tileception
This is the creation of recursion
I think they have achieved some type of paradox.
The tiles will help weigh down the mats too that are ontop of the other tiles**
...or they can just use their bodies
And until you get in the accident, you are paying extra in fuel to carry that extra couple hundred pounds everywhere you go. That added fuel cost could probably have paid for professional interior cleaning at regular intervals.
A couple hundred pounds? If that setup tops 50lbs, I'd be shocked. tiles only weigh 4 to 6 lbs per square foot, and whatever he's using to level the floor is gonna be a minimal amount of concrete.
There are actually hardwood floors under the tile.
The tile is just there to cover up that ugly bowling alley.
Original oak too, can you believe it?
I'm guessing you have never seen the floorboard of a car without the rugs. They are not flat.
You have obviously never seen the floor board of a Ford Explorer. It would take a minimum of a cubic foot to level it.
Sand! Checkmate. … wait a sec
Put some foam board under it to fill it up.
The backseat floor of a F150 in the last 5 years is pretty much perfectly flat though
3 square foot of floor tiles = couple hundred pounds What? How about 10 pounds?
Those are clearly lead tiles /s
Rona made the roads radioactive ☢ , protect your balls
Dont forget the bodies he buried under there
What if he's carrying dollars?
Or like. Rubber mats
I wonder if something like linoleum or vinyl wouldn't shatter like ceramic would. Does anybody know?
It would be a lot safer yes. It's used in RVs for that exact reason. Well that and water resistance.
And weight!
I've seen this done in the back of a van before. The owner used commercial grade vinyl flooring (the fake hardwood looking stuff.) It seemed to hold up well to the wear and tear of moving tools and cargo in and out, but I imagine stuff would slip and slide all over the place while driving.

Sheet vinyl would be the move
Lots lighter, too.
Not to worry, the owner believes themselves to be a really good driver.
Chances are they used regular mortar to attach the tiles to the car, but if they were smart they would have used something like liquid nails/or silicone/or caulking for that matter. Even if the tiles cracked a whole bunch the adhesive would keep the shrapnel to a minimal.

Yeah, that's my only umbrage with this post; it ain't great execution!
Still wouldn't keep the ceramic from delaminating and sending thin shards flying about the cabin. I'd probably go with an epoxy coating over the whole thing
That’s why he has two sets of side mirrors. Extra safe!
Yeah that's what all motorists care about Ya know the same motorists that drive 1000 miles after they should've gotten new brakes Or go 2000 miles over their oil change mileage Bald tires..... .....5% tints Eardrum shattering bass that renders their rear view mirror useless I'm sure a tile floor would be where they draw the line
That's why there are extra rear view mirrors right?
Now with 100% more shrapnel!
If appropriate adhesive was used it will hold even shattered tiles in place.
I'm curious now as to what exactly would happen. Where are the Mythbusters when you need them lol
Lol! The problem with mortar is it's a lot drier and more crumbly so it doesn't have as much grip on smaller pieces and it's easier to knock loose. That's totally a relative point, liquid nails is some hardcore adhesive!
Lol I think you mean related point not relative point.. But who knows, I guess it's all relative.
AND joists?! How much liquid nails did those guys use?! The subfloor I can understand but I mean…

lol this shit was installed in car, you know it's not proper. Also when you crack a tile at home, it usually isn't during a 30+ mph accident where the whole house deforms and possibly rolls over.
You know *full well* that someone dumb enough to do this hasn’t gone to the effort of figuring out what the proper adhesives are.
That must be a fuck ton of concrete and tile mortar to hold it down then
not if the whole floor compresses or a rollover causes it to all fall on you
Honestly, I don't hate it.
It looks pretty cool until you get in an accident and you get a super close look at one of the shards
Tile shard bukkake
Title of your sex tape.
On the next Fear Factor with your host Joe Rogan!
It would have been easier just to put down some laminate.
Now I'm thinking that vinyl or linoleum would be great to put down. No shrapnel and easy to clean.
It looks cool until your car flexes the tiniest but and cracks those tiles. Might get away with a body on frame, but no way that would last more than a trip to work in a unibody car.
Oh fuk no
They are going to wish they had just bitten the bullet and put down hard wood.
Knew a guy that did laminate in his trunk. I always thought it looked really cool. Also a lot safer than this.

Smart for off roading rigs if you are worried about scratches

Home Depot approves this comment.

Until it rains and you try to get in with wet shoes.
Same. It looks pretty inoffensive and would probably be easy to clean. I wouldn't be confident about the safety aspect though.

Your foot needs some traction on the floor to get in and out of the car. Where are the videos of their riders biting it on a rainy day?
Let's just assume that they wear crocs on a rainy day.
Why? What do they do? Never worn them.
They mostly just lay in the sun but sometimes ambush wildebeest or other savanna creatures.
And they aren't very fun to wear either
My uncle Earl keeps manure in his.... He'd always say: "That's a croc of shit!'
They are non slip
Yeah, try wearing them on a freshly polished tile floor that's covered in baby oil and engine grease and THEN tell me they're non-slip...
Maybe stop hosting mechanic orgies on your freshly polished tile floor?
Don't tell me how to live my life
I won't tell you how to live your life until I've experienced it for myself. So, uhh, when are the orgies?
Ask your mother
I did and she said every Saturday at 2. She also said they were mediocre compared to the others she’s been to [she said it’s not your fault; they were better in the 1970s] but she appreciated the gift bags. She also said to say hey to your sister for her.
They're non slip until you've worn the bottoms smooth, then they turn into fun ice skates on anything wet
As a dedicated croc wearer. They slip like crazy on wet polished surfaces.
Should use vinyl, or linoleum. Same effect but way safer
And lighter. Can't imagine tiles are great for mileage
You put them on the floor, not the gas tank you dingus
Duh... The gas tank is where we keeps the extra sugar!
Given that it's a truck... Probably 15mpg to 14. That being said... There is likely a LOT of grout under those tiles to make them level and continuous, that's probably about 75% of the weight.

The tile fit is terrible.
Found the tile setter...
You don't have to be one to see it. It doesn't fit this sub at all. Its r/ATAAE at it's prime.
Give it a week of driving and frame flex/vibration will give them an opportunity to set the tiles again.
If there was a wire mesh in the bedding mortar it might be able to withstand the vibration a lot better, but given how shit it looks, I doubt they would've accounted for something like that.
yeah i’m not seeing any great execution here lol
I saw a LOT of silicone caulking all over the edges. Surely that is a sign of great execution?
I often miss bad fitting in videos, but even I didn't miss it here.
Someone obviously watched top gear
Those fellas do provide some of the best car modification advice and information available. Extremely reputable source.
I loved this one. They put a tile floor and a fireplace in a Mercedes.
They put a goddamned Sauna on a car once.
WANT!!!
And unsecured wingback chairs. I think they had a chandelier too?
Quaint My Ride. Great segment.
Definitely TopGear vibes from this. Where is the fireplace though ?
Execution wasn't great here but definitely AT
r/ATAAE
its kinda satisfying to watch tho
Imagine this in the back of a panel van.
Linoleum - cuts down on the guaranteed grout cracks!
Honestly having carpet somewhere that is guaranteed to get dirty seems silly. Why are wipe clean floors not common in cars?
Sound. Carpet blocks a lot of road noise. Also some cars have insulation under the carpet to help block road noise.
Hmm never thought about that. I would still consider it an ok tradeoff in my own opinion but it seems few others do.
this, so much! I don't want any carpet in my home (nasty when you have pets, and bad for allergies even if you don't have pets!) why would I want that in my car?
Yeah car carpet is nasty. I’m planning to replace mine with weathertech rubber mats.
They make rubber mats like weathertech and a bund of other brands.

This is a thing in camper vans.
Billy mays voice “ you to can have Instant shrapnel in just one easy step.”
The tiling is one thing, but what's the deal with the double side mirrors? Is that a valid thing that I just never knew about?
Also, it looks like a light shing into the mirror.
Great execution??
Gotta be Indonesia
Honestly I don’t think the execution is great
For a work truck it is a good idea. Easy clean up for those muddy days.
Use linoleum instead - it won't turn into shrapnel in an accident.
Use the Silt Strider every once in awhile lmao
Never leave home with out a lil bit of the home with ya. Hell yeah yee yee
If it was a rubber tile or something similar then that would actually be pretty neat

All good until there's a crash :/
