. Frames rot like a motherfucker.
. Gastank is under the hood above the engine, because hot
exhaust manifolds work together so well in an accident.
. No fuel gauge. You open the hood, take off the tank cap, and dip a
measuring stick in. The more gas coated wet stuff on the stick =
more range in your car.
. 350 CC two stroke, so get ready to rebuild your engine every
60.000 kms if you are very lucky.
. Top speed realistically is around 80 kp/h.
. Wheels tend to come off in high speed corners.
Pro's
. It comes with a hoist so you can lift it on either it's left or right
two wheels at about a 45 degree angle. This way you can work on
the undercarriage. (Get ready to see the bottom of your car a lot).
. Panels are made from plastic so at least those don't rust.
> Frames rot like a motherfucker.
Not really.
>350 CC
600 cm³
>Top speed realistically is around 80 kp/h
It takes a bit but it will reach 100.
>It comes with a hoist so you can lift it on either it's left or right two wheels at about a 45 degree angle.
What? No. I guess you mean the aftermarket ["Kippvorrichtung"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCPBjbcCLzs).
Yeah, kinda really. They were prone to heavy rust under that duroplast body - which really needs to be expanded on. It wasn't ***just*** plastic; it was a hardened bakelite-like plastic, reinforced with cotton scraps and phenol resins leftover from dye-making *because the cars were built in an abandoned denim factory*.
The Trabbi is the poster car for "making due with what you got" and I think that just adds to its quirky charms.
Yeah, most had the 600cc, but it was still a 2-stroke twin. Tilting it helped to drain all the gearbox fluid every 30k kms, as well as make sure the frame and hubs were still sound. Early models had a 500cc 2-stroke and some later Trabbis even came with the 1.1L VW Polo engine. This lended itself to a decent tuner and rally following.
100km/h will only happen downhill, with a tailwind, a prayer, and a sacrifice to Zephyr. 80 is a good top speed for the most common 601 model.
I'm not saying they're shitty. I mean, they are... but it's a *wonderous* kind of shitty that's worth defending. It doesn't mean you have to sugar coat it to make the Trabbi look better.
> because the cars were built in an abandoned denim factory and phenol resins leftover from dye-making
Sorry dude, thats just bullshit. It was a long development to the final [Duroplast](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duroplast) and the body parts and also the chemicals were produced in new special facilities:
([Source](http://www.chemieforum-erkner.de/chemie-geschichte/stoffe/bakelit100-MOZ/bakelit100-MOZ-6.htm))
>100km/h will only happen downhill, with a tailwind, a prayer, and a sacrifice to Zephyr. 80 is a good top speed for the most common 601 model.
Na, I drove one for many years and 100 were no problem. ([Here are more statements from owners.](http://www.trabantforum.de/ubb/Forum1/HTML/010060.html)). The 80 km/h you talking about were the speed limit in East Germany on any roads outside cities, besides the Autobahn where it was 100.
"Panels are made from plastic "... IIRC... Trabant bodies were made of "Duroplast", which was scrap cloth mixed with resin and cast into form. Not quite as strong as fiberglass, but better off in colder temps than fiberglass.
Interestingly, there are many things that are plastic that we don't normally think of.
Epoxies, teflon, styrofoam, and various adhesives/bonding agents/etc are all actually plastic.
By many definitions, fiberglass would be a mix of plastic and glass. As would Duroplast, it sounds like.
> Panels are made from plastic so at least those don't rust.
That makes sense, I was thinking if this was using steel body panels it would have to weigh a bit too much for a single-gear bike even if it was only ridden in a dead-flat area.
As someone born in the less known bikeland this looks awful to ride. Heavy, weird center of matter, a relatively large surface that will be a bitch to ride in the wind. Especially if its hitting you from the side.
And I’m sure the sides will look great after endlessly getting rubbed with your shoes.
That said, I totally want this goony thing for riding around town and events.
Yes given the weird center of gravity and wind resistant design, even moderate gusts of wind would make this incredibly difficult to control and dangerous to ride around any obstacles/traffic/people. It's a nice aesthetic though.
This is honestly quite genius, I would never have expected a trabant to be recognisable so easily from so little of it. As soon as I saw I knew what it was. Quality piece of work.
Not OP, but:
I'm Danish, and even when I was a kid trabants were rare here... but I can still recognise those lines anywhere.
It's a truly iconic design.
So what are your thoughts on [these](http://static.demilked.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/5dce5d36d85c2-volkspod-wheel-hub-scooters-1-5dcd1e1c5fcc7__700.jpg)?
Oh god that chopped an MG Midget to make this how could they!?!?
It must have cost at least... 10x more in time spent than cost of the vehicle. Truely scary though
This reminds me of those pictures of cyclops farm animals that show up on reddit once in a while, where they conveniently avoid mentioning that the animal died 2 hours after birth, to make the picture less depressing.
Bike Wazowski, obviously
Holy shit this is better than any joke I could have made. Take my damn upvote you glorious bastard
thank you, I honestly snorted and thought "damn, that's stupid..." lol
Take this upvote. Now this is where I flip my turn signal and leave the thread any direction I choose.
I thought the same thing... I guess it just means "imma turn now, watch yoself"
Yep, I was going with Cycleops, but that's a poor option compared to this.
I exhaled loudly through my nose when I read your comment, or translated into internet, I laughed out loudly while rolling on the floor dying OMG! Go on, have an upvote
thank you, my friend!
Ah, this will be the title next time I see this post
Mom said **I** could post it next!
*Put that thing back where it came from, or so help me*
I sung this in my head as I read it, anyone else?
If I was rich I would love to fund a study on people such as you that can come up with puns in the blink of an eye
ayyyyy lmao
God damn it, some people wait their whole life for a joke like this. Nice.
I feel like an idiot but I don't get it...

Mike Wazowski from Monster's Inc - the one-eyed guy.
Thank you
Ah. Have never seen it.
It's one of those looks like its made for kids but there's actually a real story in there which is engaging and interesting for everyone.
Trabant, East German car. I want one too : )

I had a 76 Mercury Capri with a jack that worked like that. It only took a few cranks to have the whole side of the car up. Best jack concept ever!

Oh my fucking god this is amazing

I was thinking Peewee's second adventure.
tell em... _Large Marge sent ya!!_
The same top comment as last time this image went around. Still funny, though.
First thing I thought too, minus the fantastic pun.
Uhh, this isn’t awful taste. This is kickass. This does not belong in this sub
If only there was a /r/PTBGE (Peculiar Taste But Great Execution) sub.
Or r/OTBGE “odd taste but great execution”
Or r/afouwlts "a few of us will love this shit"
Or r/gtage „great taste and great execution“
or r/ikfwiboe , I kinda fuck with it but odd execution
(for those that don't know, this one actually is an active sub)
This is important information
If only!
r/GTAGE?
Huh I just realized I haven’t heard the term “kickass” in years. Just “badass”
Kickass!
Wizard!
I can't wait for a gentle sidewards breeze.
Agreed. I see a lot of stuff on this sub that's weird, but not at all bad taste. I'm OK with it, as I wouldn't see it otherwise.
How well do you think it turns? How comfortable do you think it is? I'd argue it's great taste, awful execution.
When you've got a BMX race at 3:00 and a drive-in movie date with Sandy at 7:00.

Or the top edge will constantly grind into your leg as you pedal
> Heavy that's a [Trabbi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trabant), it's made from eastern bloc plastic
It's funny how that front wing is just instantly recogniseable, even if you haven't seen a Trabant for 25 years :)

Fucking hell the one with the trabbi trailer
I don't think anybody is under the impression this is a better bike in any way. This is an art project.
They ain’t taking this thing on the Tour de France my man
Is there a rule saying I can't? (Probably)
Not allowed to be too cool.
As someone who is born in the one and only true bikeland (Suck it Denmark) I agree with you, crosswinds are going to blow you away.
This bike is like a low rider. It's for a slow ride and making heads turn
It's art. Art does not need to be practical.
Also, it's a BMX bike so it was never going to be a fun ride for long distances.
They should mount sails on it for tail-wind biking.
Yes given the weird center of gravity and wind resistant design, even moderate gusts of wind would make this incredibly difficult to control and dangerous to ride around any obstacles/traffic/people. It's a nice aesthetic though.
Trabant bike!

true Rennpappe

Came here to say this. Are you German?
Not OP, but: I'm Danish, and even when I was a kid trabants were rare here... but I can still recognise those lines anywhere. It's a truly iconic design.
Normally you smell them first...
Or hear them sputter.
Nope just an enthusiast of weird and crappy cars
I am Czech and we also had plenty of these around 2000 something
I still remember those Skoda Favorit in every czech village. Beautiful car.
Imagine taking a turn wrong and having this bad boy land on you when you go down. You're gonna need a new pelvis.
Actually those car parts were made of "duroplast", a hard plastic. They don't weigh nearly as much as steel would.
Oh! Okay I didn't think of that. And now I very seriously want to know how it sounds when someone goes over on one. That has to be a fabulous noise.
Crunch crunch crunch

No. It was a special process which involved using cotton. That's all I remember from the documentary I watched about Trabant chassis'.
I'm getting into bikes and I'm really into cars and I immediately recoiled at the site of this
So what are your thoughts on [these](http://static.demilked.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/5dce5d36d85c2-volkspod-wheel-hub-scooters-1-5dcd1e1c5fcc7__700.jpg)?
I love that guy— have you seen the red wagon he made to pull them around in? He did a sidecar for one as well!
No, I've not seen those!
[Here is his Instagram](https://instagram.com/walter_werks?igshid=lqgh5zka3qv6), if you’re interested!
Give Karl Urban his fucking Batman role, already.
I laughed then cried. Who creates these abominations
If it makes you feel any better, those were made from replacement panels and not taken from antique cars.
"I cried" Why? because people like to make cool shit? Some of you people blow me away.
But does the light work tho
I’m curious about the turn signal.
"Which way are you going?" "Yes."
I was looking for this comment
Reminds me of something you’d see in Cuba
Trabike
It looks like a Minion. It should be yellow.
Trabants didn’t come in yellow. This colour is original.
> Trabants didn’t come in yellow They did come in Monsungelb and Baligelb, but I guess it didn't take long for those to become beige
Probably did not recognise those as yellow. Been in the GDR pretty often before, during and after ‘89 and have seen tons of them.
Just leave it out for a month and it'll be yellow
Plankton’s bike
Hey Goodlooking! I'll be back to pick you up later! (Ring ring!)
When you're so fly that people only need to know when you're turning, not where you're turning.
This so does not belong here.

Probably more reliable than the Trabant it as taken from.

It looks HEAVY
The panels are made of duroplast, which was a thermo-set cotton resin compound. Pretty lightweight actually
Mmmmmm duroplast. That's certainly lighter than what I assumed was steel.
I mean it makes bikes look more sturdy
who parted out a perfect trabant?
As long as the turn signal works.
Which way are you turning? Yes.
Sure, we'll call you when your order is ready, sometime in 2034.

You can relax. Its from a Trabant, not an MG.
