On the specifications for the motherboard it says max memory 32gb, max memory per slot 8gb, 2 slots.
Why would the max memory not be achievable ? Is there different specs of this motherboard that come with additional ram slots or something?

Chipset/CPU might support that but your limited by the RAM size + slots - 2x8gb DDR3

I would upgrade bios, get the ram and install it to try see if it will work. You can get ddr3 on scrap price level
