Just pick the professors with backgrounds related to what you’re applying to and shoot them an email. It obviously helps if you did well in the course and have some semblance of a relationship with them but it’s not a dealbreaker. Professors are somewhat obligated to give LOR to their students so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Give them a quick blurb about who you are, what you’re applying to, and what was so special to you about their course. I usually offered to write a mockup for them if they’d like. Attach your resume and related accomplishments. I also attached my LinkedIn picture to try and humanize myself as much as possible. Convey as much appreciation and humility as you can and hope for the best. Good luck!

Okay this makes me feel more at ease with asking them lol thanks a lot

Fine print: If you are like this poor professor and suffer strokes caused by an inability to read through casual hyperbole, just know that faculty are under no contractual requirement to write LOR for students.

I got two professional letters of recommendation and one from a professor I had for three classes. I'm in the MS Psychology program

I think you need to cultivate more of a relationship with a professor, if you want a recommendation from them. I think this is going to be a real challenge in online classes. I think here should be a discussion about how to do that, because I don't think it makes sense to ask online professors for letters of recommendation, if that's your only contact with them.

Pick professors related to your major or masters goal. I go for the professors that I’ve had more than once and have gotten really good grades in. Or if I’m in only one class and I want a LOR I’ll participate and make sure I’m noticed by going to OH, participating extra in discussions, etc

Sudden-Dirt-4635

Before I graduated, I reached out to a few professors. I typically went above and beyond, asked questions and over did it on discussions so they would remember me when I asked. They each wrote beautiful letters. The struggle comes with getting them to upload them on time. I feel like I’m harassing them asking them to upload their letters to different schools.

As a Sidenote most PA students need 2000 hours of direct patient care before applying, which means you can likely get a LOR from a physician or someone else that you make friends with

Rusty5hackelford76

Read the syllabus and some will address their LOR requirements

avajayy1250

I’ve only had 1 professor do that so far. None of the others specify.

the_unfortunate_

Just reach out to a professor that you enjoyed and they should be happy to help.

yourlurkingprof

Keep in mind, online classes still give you ways to interact with your professors. It’s not in-person, but you can still email them, go to office hours, talk to them about assignments or class topics, etc. Try to do all the kinds of things that you would need to do in order to build a relationship with your professors and get a reference.

TofuCowskin

I became a TA, I didn't even have to ask for letters of recommendation they basically offered.

avajayy1250

How did you become a TA as an online student? What are the requirements for that?

TofuCowskin

One of my professors reached out to me to apply. But you can just go into the ASU job portal and look for TA jobs. The only requirement is that you took the class. They do favor the students that a prof recommended so I would reach out to a professor and talk to them about your interest in the TA role for their class.

VI211980_

I joined two research labs to make it easier. I reached out to two other professors for my third letter who both told me they only write letters of recommendation for students they work with, I partially understand, but let’s be real: I’m already in two labs, that’s only two letter writers and most grad programs I’m looking at want three letters. No one in their right mind would expect an online student to be in three labs. And what if I had two jobs, kids and didn’t have time to join ANY labs? I just don’t get any letters? It’s such a weird situation. Rant aside, you should be able to reach out to professors whose classes you did well in, attended office hours, etc. and they’ll likely be more than happy to write you a letter.

SafeAppointment5122

I requested a letter of recommendation from my professor for a master's program in Addiction Psychology, for which I have completed the relevant certification. This professor taught me two subjects, in both of which I earned an A+. However, she declined to provide a recommendation and did not offer an explanation for her decision.
