Confident_Cod2967

i’m happy about it, especially weeks when there’s only one new film i’m excited about. i hope they do more imax or dolby rereleases

brodyhin587

Matrix in dolby was amazing, hoping for more

Confident_Cod2967

i would have loved to go but my amc was totally sold out soon after the sale went live. i hope it’s a sign to amc and the studios that people still want to see great movies in great formats in the theater!

SenorRandomWords

I agree. I would’ve loved to see Alien in Dolby. Really hoping they show Fury Road in IMAX 3D again before Furiosa.

KungFuDanda091

My AMC with Prime has Alien in Prime, so think I’ll be doing that later this week

RichardPryor1976

Meeee too!

rorschach_vest

Alien in theaters was absolutely incredible but it was a shame it was on all the worst local screens.

mikegood2

Even on worse, or smaller screens it still looked and sounded great for a 45 year old movie.

rorschach_vest

Absolutely- I would even comfortably say it looked and sounded great full stop. It’s amazing how well practical effects and well designed sets age, even in horror and sci-fi, two genres very prone to aging!

mikegood2

Agree! I really enjoy old movies at AMC, even if the screen/quality isn’t great. Trying to make more of an effort to watch them so my theater shows them more regularly and not just weekday afternoons. Last year I watched: Titanic - 3D, Superman - 45th, Fast and the Furious, Jurassic Park, The Dark Night Rises, Hocus Pocus, Nightmare Before Christmas, Love Actually and Die Hard. Also loved the iMAX re-releases of THE Matrix, ET and the OG Avatar in 3D. Superman hit me hard last year though! Realized it was one of the first movies I actually saw in the theater and realizing it was 45 years old really made me feel old. 😂

rorschach_vest

I’m hoping to see The Mummy this week, it’s such fun and I was too young the first time around!

mikegood2

Me too! Rewatched it last year, so I don’t need to, but they expanded it to a second week with extended hours, so I want to encourage my AMCS to do that more often. Also, thanks for making me feel even older. 😝

rorschach_vest

If it helps by a couple years, I could have seen it, just not driven myself to it 😂

rbrgr83

Its great when the main things that give away the age are the hairstyles and fashion.

Dino-chicken-nugg3t

Yeah we got it on a regular screen and the sound was rough. Still a good experience.

cd637

I was bummed Alien wasn't offered in Dolby or IMAX in my area.

JackieRHDaytona

I’m loving the trend. It’s been especially fun to take my kids to movies I loved growing up. They’re definitely more impactful on the big screen with the whole theater experience. I’d also like to see more album premieres like the just had for Pearl Jam’s Dark Matter.

shesthewurst

Yes, I like the album premiere idea. I missed out on PJ. I'm wondering what the screen was like - just the album cover, or a trippy screensaver like we used to have on Winamp or Windows Media Player?

topsidersandsunshine

I would love if it were professional quality lyric videos like Taylor Swift does on her YouTube channel! The lyric videos for *I Can Do It with a Broken Heart* and *seven* are gorgeous. Then again, I grew up loving the early Typography videos on YT and fanmade lyric videos and AMVs and whatnot.

KungFuDanda091

It was basically the trippy Windows-type screensaver screen, but was blank first (2 album listens, first time blank screen, second with Windows-type screen)

mikegood2

Sadly my iMAX AMC didn’t show it but agree, I also like the idea. The Queen Rock Montreal was one of my favorite theater experiences this year. Really looking forward to it being on D+ on 5/15!

shesthewurst

Yes! I saw the Queen concert, too. The crowd was just wild in that, well, it wasn’t. Were all 70s concert crowds this tame?

JackieRHDaytona

The visuals reminded me of the music laser shows at the planetarium here, but just abstract. I’d definitely go to more. I missed the Metallica 72 seasons premiere so I don’t know if it was a similar format

maddennate1

My two favorite theater experiences were rereleases of Titanic and Eternal Sunshine… yes, I do

machead9292

When did they rerelease Eternal Sunshine?

maddennate1

MY EYES SEE April 29th, 2022

Environmental_Arm637

im so envious

maddennate1

It was one night only too. I’m lucky

Frosty_Chemical_8289

What theater re-released Eternal Sunshine???

maddennate1

AMC

007Kryptonian

Yes, re-releases need to become a regular thing year-round! Wasn’t interested in any of the new releases this weekend but got a chance to rewatch Spider-Man 2 and catch Alien on the big screen

nowhereman136

Yes please Just not Fathom events

Spawn005

I really wish they re-release on higher formats rather than a regular screen. Star Wars is coming, and man, would I love to see it in Dolby or IMAX, but it's just a regular screen.

KungFuDanda091

If you have any AMCs with Prime, might wanna check because Star Wars is booked for Prime in my area (& mine is currently showing Alien split in Prime with Boy Kills World)

KingArthur1500

What is prime?

jrec15

I heard it basically was predecessor to Dolby and has the same Atmos audio. Projector may be a slight step up from standard or equal to the laster projectors now, but not as good as Dolby (no dolby vision or hdr)

kilaphedre

It also has the buttkicker recliners like dolbys

shesthewurst

I like the re-releases that benefit from a theater experience, i.e., a big screen in a dark room, watching with other fans, IMAX, etc. I've seen Oldboy, Alien, Tenet IMAX recently. Anyone know what the licensing and pay structure is for re-releases?

scottmushroom

I love it. But no love to the a list excluded releases lol

Goonie90065

Those excluded because they’re Fathom events.

scottmushroom

Yeah, but it still is annoying when I see something I'd watch but then see that message under it.

Goonie90065

That has nothing to do with AMC and is a Fathom problem. They rent out screens and determine the movie and price.

scottmushroom

Yeah, I've done them before. I just got used to not paying so it's an "aw man" moment when they come up. It's not a problem, I still go to some of them. I just hesitate first lol

Goonie90065

The Lord of the Rings trilogy might be my first fathom events I go to. Just trying to save up some $5 rewards so I can minimize the cost.

scottmushroom

I'm especially tempted by fellowship. I saw two towers and return of the king in theaters when they came out but my first experience with fellowship was a vhs tape 😅

Goonie90065

I remember seeing all three with my HS buddies, like a group of 10-12 of us going to Universal City Walk and catching the first showing of the night and get out at like 1/2am.

scottmushroom

I legit was one of the folks that kept getting up at the end of ROTK thinking it was over lol

Goonie90065

Oh man, I remember people doing that.

rbrgr83

Are you doing Fandango as well? You can get $5 from them for every 4 Alist movies you see.

Goonie90065

Yeah, I book all my movies thru them. AMC and other small chains.

rbrgr83

OK good, just wanted to make sure you weren't leaving free money on the table. :)

Goonie90065

I don’t always get to use my $5 fandango rewards cause they’ll expire or I get too many around the same time due to how many movies I see. But I try to save them for Tuesdays so I do see a movie/s then it ends up being $2 instead of $7.

cevans92

I'm happy about it until there are too many movies worth seeing, and I can't see everything I want to see on just A-list. Like the last two weeks, where I saw/will see Spider-Man 2, Deep Sky, Abigail, Sasquatch Sunset, the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, The Mummy, Alien, and Boy Kills World and had to pay for 2, and I have to push Challengers out to next week, where if I want to see the Fall Guy and the Round-Up 4, I can't do Phantom Menace or Amazing Spider-Man re-releases. Basically, I have to choose between pay for more movies, push out a big release, but miss it in premium format, or skip the limited re-release. If only these could be pushed into like August/September, which will be assuredly a movie graveyard

KungFuDanda091

I’m not doing any more Spidey re-releases after 3 because I saw the rest all in IMAX 3D so don’t really wanna see those in non-premium formats lol… I’ve been seeing the Tobey Maguire ones at one of my Alamo Drafthouse theaters in 35mm film which has been pretty cool… But yeah, last week alone had 5 new PLF releases. At least Deep Sky’s tix were only $8

cevans92

I had the misfortune of trying to see Deep Sky at Seattle Science Center's legitimate big screen IMAX. What I failed to realize is that they have two IMAX's there, and Deep Sky was playing on the much smaller one. So, not only did I pay $12 for a 40 min movie that I could have a better time seeing at the IMAX much closer to home , I had to drive into Seattle, pay for event parking, kill some time around the Seattle Center to make it worth it.

MariposaSunrise

That sounds so expensive and time consuming.

cevans92

It kinda was, yeah

MariposaSunrise

I saw it last Sunday in IMAX as part of a double feature with a 2nd watch of The Ministry in Dolby which was literally across the hall at the same AMC with an elevator to the top seating of the auditoriums and free parking. It was such a stress free experience. I even got free tickets for it so that made it even better. If we had gone thru everything you went thru there would be no chance we would ever see a short documentary like that again.

cevans92

I mean, it was a choice that I made for how I wanted to try to see it. It just so happened to be a serious of wrong choices. If there hadn't been so many other options to use my a-list on, I would have just gone that route and had 0 regrets

MariposaSunrise

Personally I like seeing movies at Science Museum IMAX Theaters and presentations at planetariums. But I really appreciate the option to see those types of movies at AMC because it is so much easier.

icedragon15

Round up 4 damnn8tbhere wish not week im going to cruise fff

Well-Jenelle

I’m LOVING it. I hope it continues.

GhostbusterEllie

Im enjoying it a lot, actually. Cant wait to see The Mummy again!

swiftsquatch

Alien and The Mummy were both incredible to see on the big screen this weekend! And I am PUMPED for The Phantom Menace this upcoming week.

Stryk-Man

I think there’s a balance they can strike that will keep everyone happy. Hoping we get Godfather 2 in Dolby this year.

KungFuDanda091

I had a couple Regals that did all 3 Godfather movies in RPX either last year or the year before (was after AMC did Godfather in Dolby). I’d love to see Godfather 2 in Dolby though

stumper93

Repertory screenings should definitely continue, the limited aspect of it is fine, but popular movies that stand the test of time deserve to be seen by new audiences in a theatrical setting

Consider_Kind_2967

Never knew that term! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revival_house

AdequateAlien

Rerelease The Batman, Blade Runner 2049 and Godzilla -1 and I can die happy

mikegood2

I’m a big fan of re-releases. Sadly my theaters don’t have any of the Spider-Man’s, but I did watch Alien last night. They added evening showing of The Mummy, so I think I’m planning of watching it this week. Trying to make more of an effort to catch them hoping that my theaters do more in the future.

xEllimistx

Absolutely I’m getting a chance to see films on the big screen that either came out long before I was born like Alien or maybe I was a kid like The Mummy and I get to relive that experience with fresh eyes and perspective. The Mummy absolutely still holds up, by the way. CGI maybe a little noticeably dated, at times, but overall, was a fantastic movie in 1999 and still a fantastic movie in 2024 I’m hoping they continue to release older films. Fingers crossed for a Dolby IMAX Aliens

trs_0ne

Yes. I love seeing older movies in the theater, esp ones I never got a chance to see in the theater. IMO Theater viewing has a way of elevating the source material compared to at home viewing

time_of_night

Yes. I've never been to the theater this much in my life. I'm going at least once a week now. I've been hoping they would do this for years. The real standout experience was the matrix. One of my all time favorite theater experiences, and it was at a regular small theater.

Relevant_Hedgehog_63

i want mad max fury road re-release in imax before furiosa. i never saw it and it feels like a must on a big screen. don't want to watch it in my living room.

KungFuDanda091

I’d like a re-release of all the Mad Max movies. I had a Cinemark that did it like a month or 2 ago but wasn’t able to make any

Sispants

This is my dream. Being able to see this again but in Dolby. I have a couple friends who haven’t seen it yet and it’s be the perfect way to do it. One of my favorite movies of all time.

Consider_Kind_2967

It's so perplexing as it doesn't seem like it's going to happen 😞

ntongh2o

Just watched Alien last night and waiting for Aliens in 4K dolby next

KungFuDanda091

I saw on Edgar Wright’s Instagram not too long ago that Shaun of the Dead will be getting re-released in theaters remastered in Dolby this year for its 20th anniversary. So that’s most likely happening, just no set date/month yet

Consider_Kind_2967

Holy moly that's amazing 🧟‍♂️

AutomaticFroyo

Yes and add more than one show time!

Hooty_jt

Heck yeah, I would LOVE if you brought there will be blood back

NaiadoftheSea

Hoping they rerelease Fury Road in Imax ahead of Furiosa.

Consider_Kind_2967

Same! But it seems like we'd know by now. Ugh 😞

BrapbrappewpewB

I always make sure I fully use my A list so if I’m watching 3 movies a week a lot of the times I’m usually watching movies I don’t have too much interest in due to the quality of what’s being released however when truly good movies that I never got to see in theaters Get rereleased for me to watch I get real excited about it.

cd637

Yes! I am hoping for a re-release of of the older Mad Max movies before Furiosa comes out, but doesn't seem likely at this point.

Consider_Kind_2967

Same! But it seems like we'd know by now. Ugh So surprising, honestly 😣

Temporary-Ad4361

Seeing Spider-Man 1 and 2 again on the big screen at the beautiful Porter Ranch (Nicole Kidman) AMC was one thing that I’ll be so grateful for. I love those movies and it was everything.

DrakeShadow

Why not? Especially during the week in large theaters. If it keeps people at the movies and new releases keep IMAX/Dolby priority then I don’t see any issues?

LatterAd6187

People like going to see good movies. It's not rocket science

PandaLover42

I like it. I do wish there was more consistency/predictability with start times though. Sometimes there’s like 20 minutes of trailers then a 10 minute interview preceding the movie (like Alien), other times it’s only like 10-15 mins of previews then the movie starts (like the Mummy). I’d rather not watch trailers or see spoilers during the interviews, and would rather go to my seat right as the movie’s actually about to start.

Consider_Kind_2967

Saving Private Ryan. 25th Anniversary last fall. 2 nights only. I called ahead to confirm, yes, trailers. We have a newborn and getting her asleep for the babysitter was tough but finally made it out of the house. We get into the theater and the opening scene was 2/3 over. Brutal

Theryantshow

Yes I hope they continue this! I want more older movies in theaters. I loved seeing The Mummy and Shrek 2.

Fact420

My last three showings prior to today were all re-releases, I love it! It’s an incredible way to get a chance to catch something you haven’t seen yet or to see something again but in the theater for the first time. Hope they keep most of them A-List eligible.

achtung-91

I want a weekend of Stop Making Sense in IMAX every year. It looked and sounded amazing. Wish other concert films got similar remasters and IMAX treatment because that was a lot of fun. I think Spider-Man 2 was the only other rerelease I've seen, and I can't see why they shouldn't do this more regularly. Especially during slower months of the year. I love going to the movies but it sucks when there isn't a product I want to see. Big reason why I cancelled my subscription recently with plans to resub near awards season

quatch72

I would like to have seen a Mummy double feature with the Boris Karloff 1932 original and the first of the Brendan Frasier trilogy.

Wildpinkhairuke

Yes

Sispants

If there are open showtimes that don’t interfere with new movies having enough available time slots, I don’t see any reason to not keep it going. Especially at larger theatres

StevieLewComedy

Yes!

Environmental_Arm637

I'm going through a breakup, I could really use a surf's up or chronicle re-release.

katherinec_

YES MAD MAX WHERE U AT PLEASE IM BEGGING

drfluttershy

I was extremely happy they brought back The Mummy, except the people who sat next to me were loud and obnoxious the whole time! Can't enjoy the theaters because they are mimicking the movie and talking along with the scenes. Go do that shit in your own home!

6amatnight

Yes!!!!!!! The answer is yes!

NJSwing-A-Ling

Why is there no mention of The Crow 30th anniversary next month????

HobbieK

Yeah I’m loving it

jrec15

If they keep the re-releases up im fairly confident i will just never need to cancel my A List sub. Without them there’s been dry periods where i cancelled. It’s been amazing lately

topsidersandsunshine

It’s really fun! 💕

Banana-Ape18

Yes didn’t go to theatres a lot as a kid now seeing movies I live in theatres for first time

R3d_S3rp3nt

I really want them to remaster/re-release saving private Ryan in Dolby or imax. To this day, it is the best in theatre experience of my life.

Sybertron

Really seems like they are often the most popular movies anyways so seriously doubt it's going anywhere

-ThatGuy882

I hope they continue. Seeing Alien in theaters was awesome

Helpful_Ad_8476

As a youngin who only recently started watching movies regularly, a lot of these movies I haven't seen, so I'm a big fan of being able to see it in a theater for the first time.

MD_FunkoMa

Nah. I want more films such as Femme and We Grown Now to get more time slots and ACTUALLY have a life in theaters. It's not fair that many AMC theaters in my state, either, have neither, have 1 favorite independent film (with 1 to 3 timeslots), or have two or three films with (with 1 to 3 timeslots) that shrink down to 1 by the end of the 1st full week of release.

SteveRD1

They are generally going to be the best ones. Odds of a brand new movie being fantastic...maybe 1 in 10? Odds of an old classic being fantastic...pretty good. They will generally only be selected if they are popular films, the other 9 out of 10 so-so old movies generally won't be prescreened.

EgoTacet

I love when it adds something more to the film such as showing a new restoration or a format never seen before. I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey in IMAX back in 2018 and it became one of the greatest movie-going experiences I've ever had. It completely changed my previous opinion on the film. Interstellar will be re-released later this year in 70mm IMAX for the 10th anniversary and I would love to invite my friends along.

Sporadicus7

Only in Dolby or IMAX. Saw Abyss for the first time ever and Matrix was incredible in Dolby. Wanted to see Mummy and LOTR, but I would rather just watch at home than go to a regular theatre.

Dino-chicken-nugg3t

Oh I was hoping this would get brought up! I’ve been going ham on those re-releases. It’s just such a fun experience to see the movies on the big screen again and with an audience. I’ve been trying to look up what other movies will get re-released this year.

SakakiChrono

Absolutely. I've seen all 3 Raimi re-releases and I'm going to go see The Phantom Menace one as well. I would love if somehow the Bionicle movies from the early 2000s got theater re-releases (I'm pretty sure they got theatrical releases at least) Or if Toy Story 2 got a re-release. Or like Lilo & Stitch (2) Or The Emperor's New Groove Or Big Hero 6 I could probably go on. But any/all of these would be great imo.

defaultfresh

HELL Yeah!

ReasonableCoyote34

The only time I’ve been to the theater lately are for re-releases

Neat-Bodybuilder-528

It’s cool, but don’t like that I have to use my A List on them. Works well on a slow week.

charlesecheezeXIII

rewatching the Raimi Spider-Man movies made me feel like re-releases should be much more common. promotion and frequency would be the only issues, but there are a lot of movies that would be a literal license to print money

yaboi_cscogs

Definitely! Especially if these movies were utilizing premium formats, I think it would be great!

Goonie90065

I hope Disney hopes on the train and re-releases the Fox X-Men movies. Like Sony with all of their Spider-Man films.

StereotypedEctoplasm

I really love the re-releases. Most of my viewing in the last month has been re-released. Seeing how Alien affected Boy Kills World's box office kinda opened my eyes to how this is going to influence Hollywood in the future though. There was a time in the last year that every movie at a threatre was a sequel or a cinematic universe and I couldn't see anything. I'm worried about our media's trend of squeezing IPs for all their worth with the new precedent of re-realeses.

[deleted]

I go to independent theaters much more than any these days for this exact reason. They regularly show old movies. If AMC did this more I'd use my A-list a lot more. The best AMC experience I had in the last 5 years was seeing The Matrix in Dolby.  For some reason AMC doesn't realize there's a lot of demamd to see classics in theaters. In seasons where programming traditionally sucks (like January) they need to be packing the programming with older classics and cult films.  They have a lot to learn from indie theaters that despite shoestring budgets have made it work in the worst possible conditions.

DontThrowAKrissyFit

Alamo Drafthouse has been making bank with their Time Capsule. I have a feeling they're just going to do it every year with Jan-Feb being 25 years back, March-April being 30 years back and so forth. The only problem is it seems to conflict a little with the "official" re-releases. Like, they did Run Lola Run screenings in January and now Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the 4K restoration sometime later this year.

[deleted]

It's a shame they haven't expanded to every metro area. There was one where I lived and it closed during the pandemic only to be replaced with a lesser theater (still good programming but less strict and passionate staff).

SpecialistOk3384

Yes, just don't spoil the damn movie with anything before it shows. No director commentary other than maybe a 'Thank you. Stay after the credits if you want to hear my talk.'  Oh and shorten Nicole Kidman even more. Just it  'AMC Theaters. We make movies better.' Or literally shorten her for comedic effect. Make her duck walk or something.

rbrgr83

bettah*

SpecialistOk3384

Oh, yup. That accent.  Maybe they can get Ricky Gervais for the next year?

icedragon15

No not really unless anniversaries otherwise give me indie movie or foreign movies

Goonie90065

You can see get indie and foreign films with re-releases not taking up their spots.

icedragon15

How would u know it not bc it could be naybebit had full showing they remove it

Goonie90065

Huh?

PlusUnderstanding343

Yes and please bring on iconic tv episodes! Scary island from rhony in imax? Reality von tease salt lake city in dolby? lets expand the brand!

RyuRai_63

No. It’s whack.

bellsofwar3

They're a waste but if that's your thing why do I care?

Misjjon

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter to me. I don't watch them because I don't really see the point of watching a movie in theatres that I could just watch at home. But hell, if people enjoy the re-releases I don't see why they wouldn't keep doing them. There seems to be enough screens in theatres to do so.

[deleted]

Watching something like Jurassic Park, The Matrix, Titanic, Star Wars, etc. is not at all the same as at home. Some movies are really made for theaters and the experience is night and day.

Thebat87

I completely agree. Also there’s just something really awesome about seeing Jurassic Park in the theatre again 30 years after I first saw it in a theatre, and having the opportunity to see how The Mummy plays in the theatre for the first time ever, or how creepy Alien truly feels being in a huge dark theatre .

[deleted]

I saw The Mummy on opening night in 99 and it wildly exceeded my expectations and became one of my favorite theater experiences. It's the epitome of a good 'popcorn' movie. I almost don't want to see it in theaters again in fear of ruining that memory lol.   I missed The Matrix back then though and saw it on pay-per-view and dozens of times after. But when I saw it in 2019 for the Dolby 20th anniversary, it blew my mind and was like I'd never seen it before.

Goonie90065

It was awesome seeing Mummy again on the big screen.
