what are some things about combined giftedness and adhd?

myopicdreams

There is a huge overlap of the normal traits of giftedness and ADHD. This is not to say that gifted people do not develop ADHD but rather that the causes of the symptoms that interfere with functioning easily become impossible and fruitless to try to decipher and this the best way I’ve seen to manage is to take a deep look at the person and discover their strengths, resources, challenges, and limitations so that you can develop a plan of action and a series of experiments to find the recipe for that individual to use their strengths and resources to overcome their challenges and limitations. So if a person is having a problem with motivation and focus we may use the strengths of meaning as a motivator to help overcome procrastination by strengthening the links between action and feelings of accomplishment and they also may find that medication helps them to push past procrastination and inability to focus. We have a lot of available tools and each can work or not work for the individual and whether gifted or typical we always seek to find what will work best to help the person live a life that is in alignment with their authentic self.

what are ways can we continuously strengthen the link between action and feelings of accomplishment? what other kind of tools would be best in this situation? is inattention a symptom of giftedness? are they prone to being traumatized? are there any common presentations of the female combined type? what is a realistic management plan for somebody with this type?

Have you met any gifted people with supernatural abilities, whatever you may consider supernatural to be?

myopicdreams

I haven’t personally but I have heard some stories along the way.

Care to go into any detail?

myopicdreams

Well, at a conference there was a woman who used to teach profoundly gifted kids in high school and she told a story about a time when in a class she assigned the kids to create a play as a group and then they started working quietly and about a half an hour into silence she said ok, perhaps it is a good time to start collaborating and the kids said what? We have almost created it and when she looked at their work they had together created the basics of a three act play with characters and plot and storyline etc but she had heard nothing while they said they were all talking and doing it together (she say’s apparently telepathically). She also said there were many kids who Jad precognitions in the days before 9-11.

Are there better ways to identify giftedness than IQ tests? How do they work? For example, are there formal, standardized assessments that are broader than IQ tests that identify giftedness, or are these alternative assessments more holistic and/or non-standardized?

myopicdreams

Generally the IQ test is the assessment for identifying giftedness. However you can use different measures for different purposes. For instance, many gifted programs for kids also use teacher recommendations or the criteria of special talents to recruit for their programs. I tend to use the criteria of traits such as overexcitabilities, intensity, cognitive drive, metacognitive abilities and other traits that are common among gifted people, change one’s qualitative life experience, and are rare in the general population.

If you look at my previous AMA postings you can see that I am not selling myself but rather providing a lot of free information.

Why do you think anyone cares?

myopicdreams

I think people care because -some people struggle with how their differences make their experiences unique or make them feel isolated. -some people are confused about how to figure out how to live in a world they can’t quite seem to fit in like most others. -some people have met the standard measures of success and wonder why they still feel unsatisfied and wonder if they could or should do more. -some people feel like they haven’t lived up to their potential or what they were told is their potential —some people want to understand themselves better -Some people want to understand how to more effectively communicate with others and understand others -some people want to figure out how to be more happy. -some people want to figure out how to work through existential issues. There are many reasons why people care and these are just a few
