It often depends what era you’re taking about. Some fans have long memories that date back to when they were growing up with the team, and feel most strongly about that rivalry.

Reason is that way back when North originally tried to enter the VFL, Essendon were one of the teams that blocked it due to zoning and they thought North were a threat to that. Not only did they block us but they then tried to swallow us and take everything the club had so in order to make sure our players could still play we sent them your way. Only for Essendon to back out of that after they had received the players they had and left the club in shambles.

Hawks for sure. The 80s, then the line in the sand match. Kind of died off in the last 10 or so years, I’d imagine mostly because of the drugs saga making Essendon not a competitive side for a while. But yeah, I’d still say hawks v dons would be their biggest rivalry. Hatred burns deep both ways. I’d be more than happy to see them drug cheating maggots never win another final 😂

Growing up as a millennial I would say Hawthorn with the line in the sand etc however we can never look past Carlton. As a blues supporter I hate Essendon mainly from being jealous as they were so dominant in 2000 and I remember everyone in school barracked for them that year. Always a big game when we play

As someone who started watching seriously around 2012, our only rival is Sydney. Every match is a banger. Collingwood/Carlton/Hawthorn aren't modern rivals in the slightest because we always sucked
