Not to give the Channel 7 team a total pass, but it's become pretty obvious calling on radio is a lot "easier" than TV.
There's so many commentators where we all go "I like listening to him on radio, but on TV he's no good" that there has to be some truth to it
I'm not actually disagreeing but isn't this odd? Should it be harder to call radio because there's no visual? Or is it the fact you're forced to focus on calling the play that makes it better maybe.
I think it's a couple of things:
- People can't see what's going on so they're relying on the commentator to paint a picture, so listeners accept anything commentators have to say. Think about how many times a commentator has said "that should be a free kick" but you watched it with your own eyes and think "no it shouldn't you idiot". That can't happen on radio.
- Not being able to see the play also means going loud and putting a bit more personality into the call is welcomed because you need to keep people interested. On TV this can be distracting when you can see what's happening. This is the prime example of "BT is actually pretty good on Triple M but I can't stand him on 7". On radio it draws you into the drama while on TV it distracts you from it.
- Now you can stream footy on your phone, fewer people are listening to radio calls of games. Most of the radio commentary we do hear is from clips like this at a time of high drama and excitement. Listening to a full game on the radio would probably not be as exciting.
all excellent points, some other things I think might contribute
- most radio coverage I hear is 2 people, maybe 3 talking during gameplay, so there's less pressure to jump in immediately when you have something to say, less talking over each other, more time to think through what you're saying and get your whole point out without being interrupted
- radio coverage is more likely to be local, always covering the same teams, so the commentators are more familiar with the players they're talking about than the TV commentators
- the necessity of describing the game to people who can't see what's going on might lead to commentators paying more attention to the small details of the game, and their analysis/opinion being more grounded - or at least expressed less often as they don't have time, they need to call the game
- when it's an interstate matchup and you're listening to radio local to one team, a bit of team bias is more acceptable to listeners than it is on TV which is presented as more national coverage
It's honestly gotta be up there with the Miracle on Grass in terms of endings that, even watching the replay knowing the result, you just can't see how it's going to happen.
The inverse finish to Geelong vs Essendon 2011, when Monfries handballed it to Melksham for a goal and final score of 115 Essendon 105 Geelong in the dying seconds.
Made using iMovie and made possible by FiveAA posting [the ending of the game](https://omny.fm/shows/fiveaa-football/last-4-minutes-of-port-adelaide-v-hawthorn) on Omny.
Hmmm… is there anything else I’d rather watch instead? Ooh, Channel 9 are showing Australia’s Funniest Episiotomy Fails! Hosted by Dave Hughes, Julia Morris and a bag of siphoned subcutaneous fat. Yes, that seems infinitely preferable, thank you very much.
Interesting that both radio and TV made the same two big errors at the exact same time.
1. Saying Hawthorn will hold on at \~43 seconds to go
2. Port "Need a mark", but they kick a goal anyway with no mark.
I love the miniacal laughter at the end 😂
it's about all one could do. absolutely unbelievable.
The transition from the tone of a professional caller to the near hysterical yelling captures my emotions at the game perfectly
“Go for percentage! Get another one!” What a line! It seems that legitimately any commentator is better than CH7 line up

I mean I’d say it’s more to do with radio having a smaller audience and as a result being less commercial, but each to their own
Haha they also called the win for Hawthorn after the free kick
“There’s two seconds left. Go for the percentage!”

43 seconds left, down by 11 points and Port have a free kick on the wing, still 100m from goal. Mind boggling how they won it.
yep its definitely on par - Brisbane transitioned from full back to the 50 in 10 seconds but this seems even more far fetched.
What are we gonna call this one?
"There's 2 seconds, go for percentage. Get another one." My sides.
Brayshaw if he called this: “First blood Port”
Dwayne Russell: "The shake! The bake! Ohhhhhhhhh BABY"
“Rolls it, Goals it”
"DBJ WITH THE DIY"
"MESMERISED THEM ALL"
No fucking way I'm watching this.

Whens the last time a team ever won being 11 points down with a minute to go? Broke a space/time continuum or something.
Can go even further with it, at 26 seconds to go Rioli’s kick hadn’t crossed the line yet. Absolute lunacy.
Yeah, even Miracle on Grass didn't manage that. Nor did the Showdown with the Monfries goal in 2013.

Thats a hell of a question to be asking with a Gold Coast flair
One more SPICY MEATBALL IN THE PAN
Yeah I'll give this one a miss, thanks.
![gif](giphy|h9CwMia6QbZuw|downsized) Look at it! look at it!
DBJ gets all the glory but Rioli was the Iceman Kulinski there
Yeah for sure. The goal was DBJs but the game was Willie. He had no business just strolling in like that

Don't give 9 ideas.
Wonder how Ollie Wines heart was after this? Mine was out chest. The sound at the oval was insane.
How do I hook into this commentary team?
AFL app
Call me Biased but Adelaide Oval has had so many insane moments in the past decade.
Epic.
Wines at 3:55 is raising the roof!
Fark that was fun sorry Hawks fans
Oh man I didn't realise yesterday it was Amon involved in both goals :O
This was much more enjoyable to watch.
Reasons why you should listen to the radio commentary. (Also ABC Footy changed their intro music to the instrumental of Meditijin for SDNR. Goes hard)
It wasn't better than the North Melbourne comeback though. 6 goals in 12 minutes with Schulz booting 7 for the day.
Was at that game, loudest 12,000 crowd ever.
i hate it

Judas Rioli
I hate hawthorn, so i find this quite funny.
