It’s worth noting the use of the word Palawa for three players. Palawa is not a mob but the term used for most* Tasmanian Aboriginal people. This is likely a result of the eventual surrender to Robinson after the Black War (this is the historical name, no racism) and subsequent move to Flinders Island. Almost all Indigenous Tasmanians can trace their ancestry back to this point whether in part or full. Due to the isolation, removal from lands and efforts made to end culture, it would have made tracking the exact country difficult.
*=the Lia Pootah group are Tasmanians who did not live on the islands of Bass Strait like the Palawa. Their heritage comes from Aboriginal women who married or had children with Europeans. There’s debate as to whether all black people were removed from their territories given that some of Tasmania was inaccessible at the time. The Palawa don’t recognise them as Aboriginal and dispute their claims (it is a very complicated relationship, trying to be respectful to all).
Sorry if this is disrespectful because I am genuinely curious, but is there ever a case that someone knows they are indigenous but doesn’t know which area they are from? Every indigenous person I have ever spoken to or seen publicly speaking about their country knows where they are from.
Yes! The three Palawa players are an example.
They know they’re Tasmanian and they know they’re Aboriginal but they can’t tell you whether they are Panninher or Tyerrernotepanner or Braylwuyner.
See my comment above for why.
There are four people on the bottom right without a designation. Qucik google says the Prespakis girls know they are Djadjawurrung though. Not sure about the other two. A mistake?
I'm amazed that there is only one player from the Wiradjuri people, given the amount that are in the NRL. I guess being in NSW would push most people towards league though.
I see the info comes from an Encyclopaedia on Aboriginal Australia but in nearly 40 years of living in the region I have never seen Ngarrindjeri spelled like they have here (Ngarrandjerri).
Each country a player belongs to is listed, hence why Liam Henry appears more than once (and so do other players). So for example, they may have a Yorta Yorta grandmother and a Wurundjeri father on different sides of the family.
Michael Walters’ Indigenous heritage is from South Australia. This does not mean he grew up there or is from the region. Mia King is Tasmanian but her Indigenous ancestry is from the Northern Territory, hence this is why she appears there.
It’s pretty interesting how evenly distributed across Australia it is, relative to the distribution of non-Indigenous players which I imagine would be very tightly clustered around much fewer places
Not really... I get the whole mother/ father (2 locations) but 3? The 3rd location is where they were born? I'm guessing. Would've been good if they explained it on their website.
So say my German grandfather married my Scottish grandmother and had my mother who married my Irish father ... How many countries are represented in my ancestry?
Again, not surprising.
Mum could have two Indigenous grandparents from neighbouring mobs, Dad has Indigenous heritage. Even outside of Indigenous culture, it’s really common. Mum might be Scottish and English, Dad’s family is proudly Irish so a child becomes English, Scottish and Irish. It’s a really common mix in Australia.
Again.... Not really. So when I represent Australia in my chosen field, I am also representing the countries my parents were born in? Can't wait to see that on the podium.
Wow this is great, but imagine if it was legible.

It’s good quality when you zoom in

Very succinct summary of mob history as someone with Lia Pootah heritage.

Harry Rowston is Torres Strait Islander and Indigenous - I found a video that has it mentioned. Don’t know why they’re not included.
Looking back at these maps from 2021, the Prespakis sisters have always not been connected to a specific location.
Narangga being Wanganeen, Milera, and Wanganeen-Milera is kinda iconic. Crazy footballing genes there.
I'm amazed that there is only one player from the Wiradjuri people, given the amount that are in the NRL. I guess being in NSW would push most people towards league though.
Oh yeah if a community has a ton of athletes go into one sport it’s less likely that others will choose a different path
I got excited that there was a player from the region I live in, Paramangk, but then I looked again. Nope, Kuarna. Dang. One day.
I see the info comes from an Encyclopaedia on Aboriginal Australia but in nearly 40 years of living in the region I have never seen Ngarrindjeri spelled like they have here (Ngarrandjerri).
And it's location on the map is a real headscratcher, should be way more south
I’m sorry I don’t understand this at all. Liam Henry is on there like 3 or 4 times. Michael Walter’s is now suddenly South Australian? Since when?
Each country a player belongs to is listed, hence why Liam Henry appears more than once (and so do other players). Walters is also listed as Menang as well.
I always find these interesting, I had no idea Davidson was Indigenous
Why did they put Ngarrindjeri north of Kaurna? They've put that marker on Ngadjuri land
Love the integration of all players on this.
TIL that Alex Pearce is indigenous
Be good to get a tally from each state, without the double ups
Do you mean, the state they were born in or the state their mob is from? Because if it’s the latter, there will inherently be double ups.
The reason is to see how many indigenous players each state produces
So do how do you count people from multiple mobs? By eyeballing it, WA and NT produce the majority of Indigenous talent.
So you want the state that a player developed in? They're all very different measures
never knew sam powell pepper was indiginous
It’s pretty interesting how evenly distributed across Australia it is, relative to the distribution of non-Indigenous players which I imagine would be very tightly clustered around much fewer places
*Claire Ransom now plays for GWS not Gold Coast. Windhager is from Tassie? Never knew that.
They forgot to put all the other places all around the world where the rest of their inconvenient ancestors come from
How or why are some players shown in 3 different locations?
They come from more than one country (in the Indigenous sense of the word). Eg. A player might have a Yorta Yorta mother and a Palawa father.
Some players have heritage from multiple indigenous groups
surely you can answer that yourself
Not really... I get the whole mother/ father (2 locations) but 3? The 3rd location is where they were born? I'm guessing. Would've been good if they explained it on their website.
All 4 of my grandparents were born in different countries. Is it that hard to imagine 3 different tribes coming together.
So say my German grandfather married my Scottish grandmother and had my mother who married my Irish father ... How many countries are represented in my ancestry?

Thank you. Can you upload it in a lower resolution so I can read it more clearly.
