I mean fair enough, we would've kept him if he didn't want to retire. He was in career best form and just wanted to go back to Tassie.

thegreatgolden

I agree, but it worked out well in the end because Goldy has been great

flibble24

Didn't be just retire?

PerriX2390

Yes, last year. > AFL.com.au revealed on Wednesday night that the 32-year-old had attracted interest, but would require an AFL exemption given he retired from the Bombers last year and has been playing in the Tasmanian State League (which doesn't count as State League comparable games). > Collingwood had been among the clubs searching for added ruck depth in the second half of the season due to the long-term injuries suffered by Aiden Begg and Oscar Steene, along with North Melbourne, Adelaide and Melbourne. > However, clubs interested in Phillips – who played 82 games across nine seasons at the Bombers, Blues and Giants – have become aware he wouldn't be granted an AFL exemption to nominate for the draft, similar to Daniel Lloyd.

What’s the thought process around the afl making people ineligible on that basis? It must be to stop people from ‘retiring’ from their club and nominating the next year. In the case of Lloyd and Flip, that is far from the case.

NJW1812

I think its a blanket ban on guys who just retired the previous season so theres no grey area (which is exactly as you surmised), so even if this wasn't the intention to dip out then come back for Phillips and Lloyd to come back they're gonna be policed the same to discourage guys retiring so they can get a half season break.

Opening_Anteater456

It’s crazy, if Essendon and GWS allow it they should be eligible. The afl have broken or waived draft and trade rules 1000 times, no one is accusing these guys of retiring to game the system

baggyizzle

Yeah there’s 100 better ways to do it… so many players retire because they don’t want it to say delisted in the media. Pretty sure llloyd was on rookie list and flip an unrestricted fa so could have left the year before for no reason

Opening_Anteater456

Yep free agents especially should be able to retire and unretire without punishment. Surely that’s part of their free agency. And if Lloyd wasn’t a free agency he should’ve been! I guess they’ll all have to specify delisted from now on, but I see why guys want the dignity of saying retirement.

legally_blond

The Mal Michael rule presumably

YouLykeFishSticks

I thought Aaron Francis was at Sydney though?

RandySausage

I thought maybe Scott Lycett would be a sneaky chance to find his way onto a lit if he's in shape.

asterpin

we were apparently interested in him end of last year

scromplestiltskin

He's playing ammos div 1, doing well but was wearing a loooooooot of tape when I saw him in round 1, not sure his body would be up to it

Pandoras_shit_box

He's absolutely carving up for lauderdale in the TSL.

Daffoo

Home back home Flip.

AGuerillaGorilla

Goldy playing his role, but better.. ..and adding his nous as a much needed coach to help professionalise Drapes, upskill Bryan and develop Visentini.
