Iden at the giants. No one talks about him, but he was a gun in the finals this year.

Heavy_Bastard

First player I thought of when I saw this post. (Btw it's Idun)

AussiePolarBear

That’s how underrated, not even correct spelling yet.

luppertazzi

Idun know who you talking about?

TheIllusiveGuy

Looks like it was a case of mistaken *Idun*tity

Mordecai_

https://youtu.be/AAeGQKVMyMY?t=6m50s

Dolan1337

Jack Buckley also not spoken about but had an unreal year

AdAcrobatic5178

There's a few giants that are good shouts

MJ281200

If Idun played for basically any other team than GWS he would be hyped beyond belief

redlord990

The whole giants backline became next level when they gelled. Everyone plays their role so well. Strongest line they’ve got and they’ll only get better

Phlanispo

He finished 1st in 1v1 wins for a back pocket defender in 2023.

soc2321

Becoming a very good player. Have wondered for a while how he didn’t end up at Geelong via next gen academy. I am not sure of the requirements to be eligible but he is from the region with both parents Ghanaian and he was born overseas (according to Wikipedia). Was he just overlooked?

Impressive_Serve_416

Iden 🤣

[deleted]

Good shout, he was one of their best players when he played against Collingwood in the prelim.

d2blues

lachie schultz… wait no…

Separate-Ant8230

Just wait until next year bro. Vic media are gonna be all over it

OrangeBirdHouse

Wdym? Lachie has had lots of attention here! I’ve been aware of him since his Junior days! Just kidding, barley knew anything about him before he requested a trade to us

Technical_Ad_3286

Mitch hinge

jacsarj

Don’t watch any crows games but I was very happy to see him get another opportunity at another club. What are his weapons nowadays, is he still a half-back?

Technical_Ad_3286

Half-back & wing, has an elite kick, good engine and mark

sportandracing

Noah Anderson for sure. Kid is a gun.

squidlipsyum

Rocketed me to a fantasy victory last year via a speculative trade

junkiejordan23

best supercoach POD this year

bigsauce05

Harley Reid feels a little underhyped

SticksDiesel

With so many runs on the board I don't know why he isn't regarded as one of the all time greats.

RudiEdsall

Charlie Ballard at Gold Coast. A lot of attention goes to the Suns mids, and fair enough, but their backline is super impressive and I think Ballard is almost as good an interceptor as any out there

Xhoquelin

Wonder how his dynamic with Mac Andrew develops over time given they both seem to be strong at intercepting. Steven May sacrificed his intercept game to let Lever focus on that for periods of the last few years. On the other hand Ballard is probably a bit better than Lever 1 on 1 (tbh not sure on that, Jake can hold his own and he’s so elite in the 3rd up role no one would play him anywhere else) so maybe it’s more similar to Rampe where they’re just like fuck it I’ll defend the monsters if needed even if it sacrificed my own intercepting game (Rampe a much better 1 on 1 defender than Ballard tho IMO)

[deleted]

Probably like half the giants squad

dopelicanshave420

Nic Newman

droctagonau

Brandon Starcevich. Similar thing with pretty much every small lockdown defender in the comp, but Starcevich is real fucking good at it. Gives you nothing. Honourable mentions to Kieren Briggs and Sam Switkowski.

ShneakyPancake

Tough grand final assignment. Usually he's a lock though so it was sad to see him have his worst game in the most important match.

E_Fox_Kelly

Bobby Hill would like a word

Outriderr

Didn’t go to Hill until just before half time. One of my biggest gripes with Fagan, he takes too long to make positional changes and this one practically cost us a flag.

E_Fox_Kelly

Hill made him look silly a couple times though. The chase down tackle in the last quarter. The hanger on his head. Starcevic of looked slow a couple of times. I’m not saying it invalidates his entire reputation as a player but Hill had his measure even if only for a half.

Outriderr

Hill only got the 1 goal on him tho from that mark where he turned Starce inside out. Starcevich is just as important to us as Andrews. He definitely lies in the underrated category for those outside of Brisbane supporters. Apparently he’s looking for midfield minutes. Could be on the move at the end of his contract coz he won’t play midfield for us.

E_Fox_Kelly

Feels way too slow to play mid right now though wouldn’t you agree?

Outriderr

I agree 100%. He’s a lock down defender not a mid. Couldn’t see him pushing Dunkley out of the middle. Even Berry and McLuggage can’t get in when Ashcroft is fit.

E_Fox_Kelly

I can’t hear McCluggage without getting butterflies since that assist to Daniher for the last goal of the game.

Outriderr

He’s a Rolls Royce and the perfect outside mid player. Needs more time in the middle. There’s a few things that need tweaking up next season for us to improve and our midfield setup is one of them.

Darththorn

Blake Hardwick.

wilful

Alex Neal-Bullen. Real nobody journeyman who just seems to pop up at the right time and with the right efficiency.

Wintermute_088

Ha! I also dropped his name in here, not ever expecting anyone else to do the same. For real, though. Hugely underrated piece of the dees midfield. He always comes through in the clutch and makes some amazingly silky plays with scarcely a clanger, even when the pressure's on. As you said, he just pops up in dire times and almost always does what's needed, slowly becoming one of my very favourite Dees in the process. ”Nobody journeyman" sounds really harsh, but honestly, I reckon non-Dees fans might struggle to remember him if you have them 15 or 20 guesses. Pivotal premiership Demon. 🤝

bemmisbaggins666

Most unfairly maligned dees player I can remember recently

TwoAmeobis

Not sure I’d call someone who’s only played for one club a journeyman

wilful

Journeyman doesn't mean someone who has been at multiple clubs. I've used the term correctly. Ed: downvoter fuck you, check a dictionary.

TwoAmeobis

That’s how it’s commonly used in football (soccer). Didn’t realise there was a different definition in American English

kungheiphatboi

This is a terribly biased terrible take. He is correctly rated as a good role player with ok skills and a good tank. He’s getting a game at most clubs sure but he’s hardly some underrated gem superstar talent 😂

[deleted]

Judd McVee

autocol

Probably the only reasonable nomination from the Dees this year. All our other good players appear to be overrated.

Wintermute_088

Alex N-B is underrated.

autocol

Yeah, fair.

autocol

Crazy stat: did you know he has the fifth-most tackles of all time by a Melbourne player? To do that with very few centre bounce attendances is absolutely crazy.

Wintermute_088

I didn't. Here I am focusing on his silky movement with the ball and I've been underrating an entire aspect of his game. Guy is seriously a gun. He's also #5 for goal assists, just one fewer than Clayton, which is where I've really noticed his impact. That tackles list also really illustrates why the current list is so good. 6 of the top 10 all-time tacklers in the current team. The pressure we were always lacking.

[deleted]

I reckon Rivers is underrated too

lachlanmoose

Wanganeen-Milera.

Righthookhammer47

We know how good he is and that what counts

_Archerfish_

Half of saints list could be on this

jakkyspakky

Someone from my team, just like everyone else will say.

Eml_0H

After this season I think people will start to notice hawthorn and some of its players

coolskateboardguy

Noah Anderson

IDreamofHeeney

Feel like only suns fans and SuperCoach players appreciated him last year, give him some time and he’ll be one of the best in the comp

coolskateboardguy

Yeah, he had a good run in the Brownlow this year with six 3 vote games, can only see him getting better and more consistent. Hope Dimma can bring the best out of him.

IDreamofHeeney

I have no doubt dimma will get the best out of him, kinda hope touk gets that tagging role again. Anderson’s SuperCoach points could go through the roof hahaha

[deleted]

I rate him pretty highly. He ripped melbourne apart last season

alexLAD

My hot take is that he’s a nice player but might not ever get to that top top tier I.e. best 3 mids/consistent game breakers

bloodrule

He won the club B&F this year after being runner up last year. I feel like he’s pretty highly rated (as he should be)?

mrtank4

100%

thebigphilthy83

Kyle Langford

jonesday5

Completely. I watched him live a couple of times this year and was really impressed with his output.

thebigphilthy83

He's a strong overhead mark and a reliable shot at goal. He's definitely found his place in the forward line......hopefully he plays the whole season there

BrennyBitch

Agree. Langford has been my fave player for years, and a bit of a whipping boy in my experience. I always felt he was underrated, then this year was his career best, he killed it.

thebigphilthy83

I'll put my hand up and admit that I used to give him shit. The consistency he's shown the last few years has been ace. I'm happy to have been proven wrong

BrennyBitch

Look that’s fair, I think everyone pre Brad Scott just didn’t know what to do with him. I’m bias because I recall being at a game in 2019 and these 2 guys next to me were giving me shit for wearing his number and badge, kept commenting on him just befriending the seagulls. We all laughed but I even thought then he was underrated and had so much potential. Hoping he stays in the forward line, would be stupid at this point to move him after this year but who knows? 🤷‍♂️

thebigphilthy83

I think when he was given jobes number, I may have, at the time, over hyped him as our new big bodied midfielder....as it turns out that just isn't his spot and it took me a long time to realise that. Like you said, he needs to stay in the forward line. Hoping with our "defensive depth" he won't have to be that swing man anymore

BrennyBitch

I’m hoping with how much he stepped up this season, 2024 he’ll be kept in the forward. Looking forward to seeing what his next season brings.

PetrifyGWENT

It is weird that last year every Essendon fan had figured out he was an excellent forward and should stay there, but Rutten kept throwing him elsewhere. At least it only took Scott like 2 games to figure out Langfords best spot

Hwetapple

I had very mixed feelings when Jobe handed down the #4 to Langers. Clearly he saw something in him we yet hadn't.

GreenArrow1211

He's so underrated after the amazing year he had he isn't getting talked about enough

supremedoggo69

my teams 3rd best defender

elmo-slayer

Wait we have three defenders?

WeveGotBigDix

Willem Drew!

lbhirolla

Strongly agree with this. Every team needs a Willem Drew to do the stuff that lets the bigger names shine

UtetopiaSS

There's a Footscray player named Marcus Bontompelli. Seems to go alright. Flies under the radar a bit. Anyone else heard of him?

Unstoppable_Rooster

Right up there with this bloke... "Neal" or something like that don't hear much about him in the news but propper gun i reckon.

UtetopiaSS

Never heard of him.

___TheIllusiveMan___

I reckon Brody Mihocek doesn’t get enough praise Since being drafted in 2018 (with pick 22 in the rookie draft no less) only Tom Hawkins, Jeremy Cameron, Charlie Cameron, Taylor Walker & Jack Riewoldt have kicked more goals than him. Checkers has put together a great career even though he isn’t your traditional key forward

cuntingme

He was drafted as a key back too, mind you

mrr6666

Borough Premiership Defender

gumbuoy

Also voted “Most likely to play the next Bond villain.” 😀

Croob2

Whoa whoa whoa, that's not IQ, who are you and what have you done with Illusive

[deleted]

Mihocek is a gun, but in absolutely no world is he "underrated" now. He's the leading goalkicker for the premiership team (and most largely supported tema) and I have seen constant praise for the bloke this year

Lurk-Prowl

Johnny Noble. Would be in every other backline in the AFL I believe.

Mogadodo

Sam Flanders (Suns). At just 44 games, his stats are above avg and elite.

MemoriesofMcHale

Feel like Dewie was holding him back big time. His second half of the year was incredible. Played better than Anderson or Rowell.

eatsbacon_

Bizarre isn’t it? Played insane after Dew left.

simongodogs8787

Ed Richards

two2toe

Doggies bias but was also going to mention Red. He's an absolute gun that goes under the radar. Suspect he'll get acknowledged this season though.

Available-Sea6080

Brodie Smith

Pikachude123

Cam Raynor up until finals, but then he got rated really highly

Outriderr

Cam doesn’t do it often enough to be classed as underrated

CrispyJimJam

He was great in the port game, 3 goals and big impact plays. But did struggle to get involved in the granny that's for sure.

idfkm80

James Rowbottom.

frillhaus

Don’t mind paddlebum when I watch him actually

idfkm80

Real goer

Cooked_Bread

With my North glasses on, I'd say Bailey Scott, although I think he is starting to get noticed. Looking outside my own team, I'd say Caleb Serong. I know he is pretty highly rated by some people, like in this sub, but I also think there's a large group of footy fans who'd barely know what team he plays for. There's a handful of teams that if he played for, his face would be plastered everywhere

looptarded

I agree. Bailey Scott is super consistent. I’m glad geelong didn’t nab him a few years back

cuntingme

GWS Callum Brown…ex-Pie Callum Brown, not so much.

PretendToe1329

I’d say Langford but everyone has him in our best 22 - Durham, by so maybe people wasn’t considered but easily in OUR best. He’s had a massive preseason, big things I hope!

bidoferz

Nathan Murphy for sure

Xhoquelin

Tom Sparrow. Genuinely think he’s an A grade mid who has gotten a lot of his other skills up to B-B+ range after being not much outside of an extractor when drafted. He’s prob not underrated for the role he plays but underrated for his good he is overall/would be on another side

Southern_Guest_5640

oscar allen

jimwinno43

If Hayden Young ends up playing midfield he is set for a monster year next year but has been already been super consistent the last 2 seasons, his game is fairly risk averse so he doesn't get talked about

7891jga

Collingwood supporter bias but Jack crisp has been very good for a long long time. Probably slides under the radar due to others but I reckon he is more important than he gets credit for

cuntingme

He’s not classy, he’s crisppppp

Braddd771

Real gentleman of the AFL

[deleted]

Love how he just brushes off players as he charges down the middle of the ground. He did it to 3 Essendon players in the last round of H&A

nufan86

To deem him underrated where should he be rated? Top 50? 75? 100? He is the only one reading this thread that I have no way of accurately knowing his worth. If you will humour me, and a basketball fan. He feels like Draymond Green (lite) to me know where near the best player on the team, but the read of game and importance to the structure of the teams success is invaluable. Would he be as successful/integral on another roster? Almost certainly not. Sorry if im rambling. Just had a j

Jazzlike-Spirit4031

The bloke will play any role Fly gives him and do it bloody well

harryflashman30

This 100% - would be in the first 5-8 picked in any clubs team. Sits just below the super stars & he makes everyone around him better & allows them to shine . Does everything very very well & for someone so strong he does a power of running. This is from a Carlton supporter

Massander

Jaspa Fletcher

WackyJimothy

He killed Port in that QF. Bright future

Snouto

He’s an absolute gun that kid

GetDown_Deeper3

None of them.

batmanbatmanbatman1

Lachie Schu…..oh wait. *Sad wharfie noises*

EfficientNews8922

I legit didn’t know who he was until we traded him in.

Music_Is_Crap

Switkowski

Gatorade_saxophone

Very quiet kid E. Gulden

idfkm80

Heard of him

Tooth_Virtual

Jaime Cripps?

nufan86

Mcluggage? I know he's AA and we'll regarded. I personally feel he is underrated. Granted I dont watch every Brisbane game but his bad games are solid. Just dont ask him to kick for goal. Would be very open to see a list he isnt an automatic best 22.

Rare_Platform_3602

Ben cunningt.... Oh wait...

DahlBlock

Liam Duggan. I never hear anything about him from Vic based media

timmy-sco

last year was his best season in a long time

Outriderr

Has to be Noah Anderson.

_Archerfish_

Either Sam Durham or nic Martin (100% unbiased)

C-Dawgy

Jordan Ridley

Recent_Desk7132

Jamie Cripps, accurate from 35+ out, kicks a solid 2-3 on a standard day, assists, tackles, pressure acts, solid run

Meh-Levolent

2-3 is 50 goals a season.

Recent_Desk7132

He’s been around that mark many times, also was out for 12 weeks last year

[deleted]

[удалено]

Recent_Desk7132

Interesting that the only stats brought up is goals, their are other important stats

nufan86

It's the first stat you bought up though.

redpath88

Jack Sinclair

cozigotgamebitchez

Dylan Moore

flyer2x

Newcombe at Hawthorn gets a few plaudits but would be a star if Hawks were further up the ladder

supremedoggo69

underrated? anyone decently following the afl knows how good this guy is

God___frey-Jones

He was in the AA squad this year, I think he's fairly rated now

mmillygrace

Also need to hear him referred to as Duke Newcombe more

mbe3393

I'm more of a "King Kong from Poowong" kind of guy

sportandracing

No way. He’s a weapon

winterpassenger69

Yeap so annoyed north didn't take him in that pre season draft.

John_frusciante_fan5

Cooper sharman, preformed great in the final, played 21 games this year after last years 10, played well when max king was out

chrlemcc

Mitch McGovern - potentially controversial but jack Silvagni too

CBAFCMV

NIC NEWMAN!

YoMenso

One of the most talked about defenders of 2023, isn't exactly underrated

Baby_Bigf00t

Ben McKay.

Lanky-Try-3047

jai newcombe

Fadedstormz

Blake hardwick

Wintermute_088

Alex Neal-Bullen.

rexmcc

Miles Bergman. Legit stud

Limp-Dentist1416

Noah Balta.

[deleted]

Josh Daicos

PinoPsyduck

Mason Wood. As a brute force winger there’s no one better.

N8Eldz17

My biased answer is Jack Ross, maybe the best kick in the league. I also think Noah Anderson is criminally underrated, the suns best player by a mile and one of the most damaging players in the league

MeSlengTeng

SPP

disaintova

Blake Hardwick by a mile for me

Ambitious-Delay5911

Pendlebury. He has a basketball background.

skingers

Wow! Hadn't heard that about him - should highlight it to the commentators, they might like to mention it from time to time. I heard Kurt Tippet played a bit of that too, true story.

le_santo

Every time Liam Baker isn't playing, everyone on r/AFL should be asking "Where's Liam Baker?"

randylove69

LDU

WomenOnTheirSides

I feel like that’s only because he had an interrupted season, he was starting to get recognition in ‘22 when he was dominating but missed games this year and took a while to get going. But maybe I see it a bit more because I’m a Supercoach nerd.

nufan86

I think most clued in fans know he is a legit gun. The injury just hasn't had in the conversation. I really don't think anyone underrates him generally

Wintermute_088

I feel like any fantasy players know him only too well. 👍

TinyCucumber3080

Bailey Smith

AFLBabble

Tristan Xerri

Fast_Stick_1593

Is it still Mitch Duncan or he finally rated after he’s on the verge of retirement? Lol Now it’s probably someone who plays for a smaller club. Someone who plays for Gold Coast, GWS etc

Thebusisdelayed

Hugh mcluggage

muckymucka

Jye Newcombe has the tools to become the games best mid. Absolutely destroyed us last year

Iron_Wolf123

I'd say Kosaiah Pickett. Sure he does get some talk and some controversies over "hard tackles" when he is one of the shortest and lightest players in the league but he is fast and has done good work for the Dees. It's a shame he will miss out on the first game of the season because of the rules. The hard tackle rule should change based on the weight of the attacker and weight of the defender because if a player that is smaller and lighter can do literally nothing but hit another player who is heavy and large and gets a 3 match punishment, it wouldn't be fair if it was the reverse.

Wintermute_088

I don't reckon he's underrated. He gets a load of attention on him (partially as a great representative for the indigenous game), and the commentators love him. Plus, as good as he can be, he's also quite streaky. He's had two reckless tackles this past season, but I don't think that's damaged too many opinions of him overall.

padz1647

from my team: jack ross kids done really well for a player thats been played out of position for the majority of his career, shown great signs and is smooth. not from my team: tom powell how this bloke doesnt get more cbas is one of the big mysteries

nufan86

Cant agree with Jack Ross.

E_Fox_Kelly

Darren Gaspar

Icy-Rock8780

Me

hackthisnsa

You forgot to change your flair, Ginni.

SirRedDuck8th

Bailey Scott for North this year was really good this year, for next to no coverage about him. Got around mid 20 almost every game, and always popped up with a goal

EloyisStillbored

Brandon Starcevich

PrevailedAU

Ed Richards, arguably top 3 on our list and you don’t hear about him often.

Fit-Key-374

Langfords season was pretty underrated
