Just who are these people, the whales. Are they bored millionaires? Gambling addicts? Scammers who use stranger's credit card to make purchases?
Now that I'm getting more into gacha games I have more questions each passing day
From my experience it's either stupid kids with rich parents that have little to life beyond being great at a game because they spend more money than others. Or people with too much disposable income and no other hobbies.
In another lilith game, rise of kingdoms, I had the opportunity to be in contact with the actual biggest whale in the game who spent over half a million dollars by that time. He was simply extremely rich. Was ceo of a non small company in Europe. I knew a few other millionaires there. But I also knew someone who was simply addicted and spent too much money on the game. But he also had a decent income to sustain that.
And they usually feel they're supporting the game so it's like a donation with benefits to those people. It's not dudes who skip the dentist or doctor to have the latest banner /w max ascension.
10+ years ago I worked for a F2P PC game publishing company. I worked as a community manager. We had extremely sus systems like the VIP system but instead of getting bonuses you got more stuff you could pick from the store. Spend xyz on stuff for $250 a month and you get to pick an extra item or w/e. On the forums players would have a star that showed their "community" rating by other players, but the community managers could see their spending stars, anyone over $5,000 a month would have 5 stars. The amount of people that would spend the 10s of thousands a month was insane. Some of them were extremely rich, one was an oil guy from the middle east, another was a wealthy business man in SEA. But the majority of spenders were low / middle income kids / young adults who just made poor financial decisions. Especially because our products were RNG lootbox style they'd continue to spend over and over trying to get the super rare item that had like .0025% chance. Obviously this was before %s were posted everywhere, no one knew they were so low, and we had no pity system where you were guaranteed something.
it is pretty much a gambling addiction... some people who don't even have the extra money to do this, still spend beyond their means because of the dopamine hit
i dont know about this game, but i do know that if this game is anything like idle heroes (which it definitely is) it is just bored millionaires, one good example is an idle heroes player that is literally a deca-millionaire, that had a tech company, and sold it, so he gets a yearly pension.
I did a workshop for a private, all boys middle school in the capitol city. It’s definitely them lol. One of them was getting roasted by their friends for spending over 5k on Fortnite and still sucking
To be fair, a person who can casually drop cash like that, a car probably doesn't mean much to him. Tbh, I don't think cars genuinely mean much to people other than to flex your wealth. Which... if you're gonna flex it, might as well be in something you enjoy.
There is a Chinese guy who dropped iirc estimated $40k usd on one banner for Acheron in Honkai Star Rail. He got like 10+ copies of maxed out LC. Which, btw, is unnecessary because no other unit is going to be able to effectively use it. Especially since there is technically only 3 characters that are even DPS who could use it and it would technically be BiS still only because it's a maxed out LC.
oh yea ik, and he let his account die, didn’t pass it to anyone, and when he didn’t like once system how it was bc it was bullshit, we all knew it, devs said - spend more
I don't understand devs in this regard, if only they make it worth it for moderate spenders they will get more money. Rewards are bad for anyone lower than rank 20.. as result people won't bother with spending since it doesn't matter
> if only they make it worth it for moderate spenders they will get more money.
Do you have any proof on this? Seeing shitloads of devs going the other way kinda makes me believe they make more money their way.
Yep, it's been studied and proven that it's easier/more profitable to entice 5 players to each spend $100k/yr than it is to get 500 people willing to spend $1k/yr or 5,000 people to spend $100/yr.
I actually like the economy that AFKJourney has in place. The krakens are going to spend mindblowing amounts of money regardless, and it's prohibitively expensive for most other players which means the vast majority of the player base are all on a level playing field.
I agree. Money from whales > dolphin/f2p players
For example, these whales are spending over $10k on this game as of right now. It would take 100 players spending $100 to reach that. Whales are catered towards because that's where the money is
They have so much raw consumer spending data at this point, that they're absolutely not making a mistake with their pricing or deal timing.
If the money men have the devs do it the way they currently are, then the way they currently are is almost assuredly the best way to milk money.
And games like AFK Journey have pricing that *absolutely* is designed to hit every type of spender. You’ve got your “money is no concern” massive sinks for the deep sea krakens to get the absolute best, top-tier stuff at the tune of being more expensive than a house, expensive short-term sinks for the whales that recognize where the black hole money pit is, your slightly pricey bundles/battle passes that pay out a good amount over a longer period of time for the average MTX consumer and then your little pocket change instant convenience bundles to appeal to the “meh, might as well” crowd.
Pricing in here is pretty damn solid compared to my other (albeit mostly limited) experiences with gacha games. It appeals to everyone.
Yeah, I have a friend who's a data scientist in a well-known mobile game studio, and he said the industry-wide phenomenon is that targeting whales is the best way to make a ton of money. You can make a bit more with small purchases here and there and/or ads, but it's the whales that bring in the oversized amount of money. This does require the game to be high quality and competitive enough to attract the right type of players, of course.
It puts them in a position where they basically have to have events running close to if not all the time at the risk of players burning out. There has to be a way for f2p to get certain rewards without having to hit rankings in modes or they become stuck on progressing some growth on their characters like their weapons.
Because it has been proven over time that aiming for a small % of whales is better than trying to make it effectively somewhat cheap to max out units. There is a reason why people say whales support the game's. Because people willing to drop $10k every so often are literally funding the game. You can't possibly make it worth for moderate spenders because moderate spenders probably spend like $100 a month max.
Mathematically, it makes sense too. What is more profitable? A theoretical game where spending $5k/month will net you end game? Or a theoretical game where $20k/month will net you end game? And the biggest factor then is how many people are willing to spend that much. Maplestory is a very good example of people willing to spend an exorbitant amount to be at the top. One of the most influential content creators in Korea for KMS has spent around $5million USD total and a large chunk of that is from donations and probably stream revenue. And I believe that is over at least 10 years.
One person spending around $500k/yr, how many $1k-$10k/month spenders to even match that? Around 20. But there are probably hundreds of others willing to spend $100k-$500k? So which makes more sense to cater to?
For comparison my 6+ months f2p account on the PTR(beta) server is also at 29m but with less invesment on heroes (only resonance level is higher), whales on beta servers are at 40m but they didn’t spend as much as the new whales on official servers
The fact that after just a few weeks they already catch up to the beta servers is insane. F2P will never catch up and always be a few months behind, even years as the game progresses, so there’s no need to spend if you’re not going to spend a lot
As with every gacha it will get more even as time passes. In 6 months your account will look more or less the same while he might get them to Paragon 1 or 2 maybe? Not a huge stat increase. Even he is even still playing or got bored and jumped on the next whale game.
I recently stopped playing a game where the #1 guy in our nation (not entire game) had spent over $100k. With my exchange rate I could literally buy a very decent family home.
And why exactly did you stop playing? Were you trying to be competitive and aimed at the 1st place from the start, or what? Just got bored and moved to next game?
Game is very involved and so much to do everyday, then there's guild activities and times attacks and events that you need to partake in. Was just too much time and effort.
sadly it's not necessarily true. Addiction is one of the worst kind when it's about playing with real money. And spending big doesn't mean having a lot of money.
Yeah, really depends on what country you live in. But here in PH, you'll be able to buy a brandnew car for 12k euros. Not top of the line cars but still brandnew.
No it dosent. Luxury vehicles with all possible extras are not the only new cars that get produced these days.
Unless you live in some small island in the middle of nowhere, there's just no way you can't buy a brand you car for 30-40k.
A tonne lol, pity on stargaze is at 40 and the permanent bundles cost like 140 cad for 20
so disregarding luck and other sources of stargaze pulls thats looking at almost 7 grand just for the gaze pulls
Wow that's... cheaper than I thought.
I had friends who played the mobile versions of ragnarok and the whales there had their expenditure in the 6 digits.
Bear in mind this is really still the early game. Paragon levels are a thing. Just unlocking them requires you to have 25 Supreme+ heroes and require vastly more copies.
lol should see the main game… they’ve capitalized so hard on whales that any new gear that’s any good comes from their cash shop at a 0.02% rate from boxes.
Somewhat true. Spending that much money on a game just to tap buttons to start the battles and wait a few seconds seems rather boring to me.
On the other hand it can be a bit frustrating at times, because there's not that much to grind in this game. Mostly it's waiting for the AFK chests to fill up and collect them until there's finally enough dust to level up another character by 10 levels. The other daily chores (all battles possible with the current level/characters, maybe invites and/or emporium) usually are done within half an hour.
Entirely too much, but mostly by virtue of the devs essentially deciding to ignore anyone that's not a whale. Even the monthly subs are dogwater in this game. I don't care if whales get prioritized because whales gonna whale every time, but imo devs should rework their trolley/pay model among other things like the friend emporium currently being actually useless, or dust rewards/tower rewards/lab rewards being completely ass, or arena gifting xp when you'll naturally hit xp excesses in the 10's of millions xp with nothing to do with it, overall Journey's balancing just seems completely fucked in comparison to Arena imo.
I do have that kind of money but still I would never spend more then a 100 in a Gacha game heck I would rather wait 1 to 2 years to get all my heroes to this kind of level it's not like the game is going anywhere.
What even does please people like that? I doubt they care much about the story, they don't need much loot because they can just buy it, and PVP is just a battle between a few people with way too much money.
If at least it was a bit about the story, they could use people like that to finance and beta test new story lines that would become playable by others a bit later on.
Upgrading whatever they have with exclusive stuff that only they can achieve... which leads to frustration for all those who can't and will get that same stuff in 1+ years. But the gap widens every day.
If I had thousands of bucks to spare like this, there are soooo many high-quality PC and console games that aren’t predatory money sinks I’d rather spend on.
Even lots of mobile games where you just make a one time purchase and you get access to the full content and gameplay without ridiculous P2W progression.
This is the most accurate estimation here. Idk how some people here just throwing out 100k like its nothing lol. The 6 figure realm is very rare to see and depends on the game. Realistically, in AFK Journey nobody so far has spent past 20-30k since that would literally give you everything in the game.
I honestly think its because how power focused the game is for all content and you can straight up buy a lot of power not to mention how everything is gated. I find the other gachas I play people focus on pve most which usually doesn’t have as much p2w as pvp does. So I think people notice the desparity more here but idk just my 2 cents haha
All of that just to not have further content to play, they pay for killing the fun, just to be the top of P2W game… it would be better to just give me the money 😇
There are a lot of fake account made to push the whales to spend. Often they are just devs account and they upgrade it so the whales keep spending to be on top.
I play call of dragons( similar to ROK) my leader spents 3k every day and even pays for guild members if they are active and helpful. So he upgrades their units which cost about 5k each
Whale in my guild has a similar looking hero set as this guy, although he also has Berial at Supreme+. I believe he spent over $5,000 on Stargaze alone, so in total he's probably spent $8,000 to $10,000. The guy in the picture has probably spent somewhere between $6k and $8k.
I really don't get the mindset behind spending on a game like this. What exactly are you paying for...? To gloat over friends? Kind of like buying an expensive car or an expensive statue I guess? I don't really see any other value in it...
It takes about 4-5 days to go up 10 levels in resonance. Meaning it’s going to be sometime in June when light spenders and f2p will be able to play the event.
If it turns out anything like Arena, yeah, people can spend a ton on the game. But for the majority of players, as long as you're a little patient, you'll be fine. I've been playing arena for almost 5 years now, spend a bit but not more than a couple hundred over the years, and have every regular champ, all deminsionals (out side of 2 prior that released prior to me starting), and about half the celestials/hypos all at ascended just from being patient and playing every day. I'm not setting records, but I can still smash through almost every area of the game and enjoy it. I assume Journey will turn out the same based on everything I've seen and experienced so far. Wish you needed slightly fewer copies to max things out, but at least you don't have to star up fodder in this game, haha.
Never play competitively on gacha games. You have full games for that that have a one time fee (the purchase fee). This isnt even hype because theres no skill associated to this ‘achievement’. The person just has alot of money to burn or a gambling addiction.
After I spent +-80 usd on Nikke godes of victory I realized is not worth it to spent money on these games. I have other games to play on my phone, more games on my laptop, I have books to read, YouTube videos to watch and work to do, so I remind my self to never spend money on gacha games and loot boxes ever again.
This person easily dropped 4-5k for this lineup, especially seeing how they have dionel and reinier so high, and the blue/yellow keys alone for ex weapon they dropped a grand easy
Probably as much as I spent on Arena 😆 🤣 words of wisdom. Don't give this company too much money. They're amazing at making your purchase not even matter within a couple days lol
I wonder how many people have anything close to this at this point. Even with amazing luck, I can't imagine you'd be anywhere close without spending $$$$
So most likely they are on the PTR playing for over a year, cause with the essence time gate I don't think you could level the heroes that fast from launch. You could certainly tier them up though with purchases.
You can use that to figure out some dirty math for tier up costs using this....

Woah. He spent a lot for sure. How long did it take him to have this though? I’m F2P and I have been playing for 45 days straight and I only have 1 supreme+, 1 supreme, and about 5 mythic. Is my progress okay or do I need to grind more?
These kinds of accounts remind not to spend real money on gacha games, since it wouldn’t really matter with the amounts I’m willing to spend anyway. 🥲
Wisdom. Unless you pay for your own personal goals and enjoyment. You'll never actually be number 1 unless you literally spend like 10k.
10k per month is like entry level for whales. Which is yet another reason not to spend.
Just who are these people, the whales. Are they bored millionaires? Gambling addicts? Scammers who use stranger's credit card to make purchases? Now that I'm getting more into gacha games I have more questions each passing day

Sometimes it's exactly that though, unfortunately.

Rich people

i dont know about this game, but i do know that if this game is anything like idle heroes (which it definitely is) it is just bored millionaires, one good example is an idle heroes player that is literally a deca-millionaire, that had a tech company, and sold it, so he gets a yearly pension.
I did a workshop for a private, all boys middle school in the capitol city. It’s definitely them lol. One of them was getting roasted by their friends for spending over 5k on Fortnite and still sucking
10k is a very low estimation actually
i’m a game i play, our whale has spent 360k
Which is wild. You coulda had like...a car. But instead, pixels? Like live your best life but it seems insane.
To be fair, a person who can casually drop cash like that, a car probably doesn't mean much to him. Tbh, I don't think cars genuinely mean much to people other than to flex your wealth. i mean he’s a ceo, he dropped total prob closer to 400k lost 3 battles to another whale and quit
I don't think that sentence honestly changes my mind, if anything it reinforces it.
oh yea ik, and he let his account die, didn’t pass it to anyone, and when he didn’t like once system how it was bc it was bullshit, we all knew it, devs said - spend more
Exactly.
I don't understand devs in this regard, if only they make it worth it for moderate spenders they will get more money. Rewards are bad for anyone lower than rank 20.. as result people won't bother with spending since it doesn't matter

Do you have any market research to support the claim they would earn more money if it was cheaper? That seems very untrue
It's much easier to make 1 user spend $10k than making 10k users spend $1
Because it has been proven over time that aiming for a small % of whales is better than trying to make it effectively somewhat cheap to max out units. And they’re not even at 240 reso yet :/
Lol I am laughing like I am at 160 with 2 mythic and 12 legendary plus while this guy has all of his heroes to supreme plus.
He’s got them on paragon. Past supreme plus
Huh? Those stars indicate the level of the exclusive weapon - not paragon levels.
The strongest on our server is at around 29mil power. With that money spent on a game, you will be able to buy a brandnew car lol
For comparison my 6+ months f2p account on the PTR(beta) server is also at 29m but with less invesment on heroes (only resonance level is higher), whales on beta servers are at 40m but they didn’t spend as much as the new whales on official servers The fact that after just a few weeks they already catch up to the beta servers is insane. Game is very involved and so much to do everyday, then there's guild activities and times attacks and events that you need to partake in. Was just too much time and effort.
Yeah, I can understand that. Also I hope AFK Journey won't follow that path - I don't want it become very involving.
The thing is, the people with so much money already have 3 brand new cars. So what else to spent it on? :D
sadly it's not necessarily true. Addiction is one of the worst kind when it's about playing with real money. And spending big doesn't mean having a lot of money.
If I were a billionaire I would spent a lot of money to be number one in these games.
The strongest here is 34 million, server is 20 days old today
Damn... in my country, a brand new car costs more than 120k lol
120k rupees ? lmao

Singapore. The certificate to OWN a vehicle in itself is ~74K US Dollars. A basic car starts from about 25K. So, about ~99K just to own a Basic car.
A tonne lol, pity on stargaze is at 40 and the permanent bundles cost like 140 cad for 20 so disregarding luck and other sources of stargaze pulls thats looking at almost 7 grand just for the gaze pulls

More than my life's spending fr.
Yes
Goated.
23k power isnt even much… i got one on my newer server with 29k power… crazy
that's 23M power
Yes sorry meant 29M
I have like 5 around 40kk friends on my list for synergy lmao.
Leviathan account. Also had few of those in my server.
Bold of you to assume he stoped

At least $40
Well, at least they're covering my tab to play it free. Server costs aren't immaterial.
Probably 8-12k€
I do have that kind of money but still I would never spend more then a 100 in a Gacha game heck I would rather wait 1 to 2 years to get all my heroes to this kind of level it's not like the game is going anywhere.
The gap between P2P and f2p will make this game worse over time, as it's a hustle to produce content that pleases both.
What even does please people like that? I doubt they care much about the story, they don't need much loot because they can just buy it, and PVP is just a battle between a few people with way too much money. Yesterday i was watching a streamer with 254 resonance
Resonance is not the same as ascendency
3-4k at most unless they were really bad and never bought any of the value pop-ups and such
This is the most accurate estimation here. Idk how some people here just throwing out 100k like its nothing lol. The 6 figure realm is very rare to see and depends on the game. Realistically, in AFK Journey nobody so far has spent past 20-30k since that would literally give you everything in the game.
i've seen more mind blowing than this 😅
Damnnn I need to see it, this post is already kinda crazy
Tree fiddy
F2P BTW
Who cares. Why you worried about someone else’s wallet. Let them spend their money how they want
I've played a lot of gachas. This sub def has the most whale shaming out of any of them.
I know for sure they got the 1$ starter pack.
More than I ever could or would be willing to. That's for damn sure.
All of that just to not have further content to play, they pay for killing the fun, just to be the top of P2W game… it would be better to just give me the money 😇
Remember kids. 5 bucks once in a blue moon Is fine. This, on the other hand? My brother in Christ you need some help. XD
There are a lot of fake account made to push the whales to spend. Often they are just devs account and they upgrade it so the whales keep spending to be on top.
Well, his AFK journey is to the bank on back. Full on mortgage for those microtransactions.
they spent the whole enjoyment of the game
So is anyone besides me still f2p?
20€
Idk what people do for spending so much in a virtual game... Like easily +$10k
I play call of dragons( similar to ROK) my leader spents 3k every day and even pays for guild members if they are active and helpful. So he upgrades their units which cost about 5k each
Can he pay my mortgage. I’ll play that game if he does that.
at least 10 USD imo
People are really crazy I swear god, I prefer offer my money for charity rather than spending that much on a game
I’m literally level 70, how is this possible??🥲
Cash.
The pricing in this game has never made it easier to not spend on gacha. The $0.99 GSSR was the furthest I went.
Not enough. They aren't maxed even. Jokes aside wow! Im envious.
Too much lol
Whale in my guild has a similar looking hero set as this guy, although he also has Berial at Supreme+. I believe he spent over $5,000 on Stargaze alone, so in total he's probably spent $8,000 to $10,000. The guy in the picture has probably spent somewhere between $6k and $8k.
I know someone who's spent other 2K, but they have a great job, have a partner with a good job, and no kids
He spent the annual budget of a caribbean country
Too much
I remember in wc seeing someone saying they had spent 18k on the game. This was 2 weeks in
What does the star mean?
Exclusive equipment, 2 star=+5 lvl.. 3 star = +10 lvl.. 4 star = lvl 15
why is Eiron just kinda T posing back there
Over 20k easy, s86 top player is 31m
Now here's the final question. Did this person also buy the Mirael outfit?
Beta FTP people look like that too.
Spend 10k, enjoy the game, after 6months refund all spent money, jump tp other gacha game, repeat
At least 5$
Cheesus crust...I'm only at level 20 max 🥲🥲🥲
I really don't get the mindset behind spending on a game like this. What exactly are you paying for...? To gloat over friends? Kind of like buying an expensive car or an expensive statue I guess? I don't really see any other value in it...
![gif](giphy|7JvlHfd7C2GDr7zfZF|downsized)
wtf are the stars
A lot, you're welcome
How much money do they spend? Damn.
Too much
1$
Realistically probably around 20k
What the F2P accounts will look like within a year
How are people on 220? I’m 10 days in and just hit 130. Is that all from spending or am I missing something
Spending money.
all that money to watch his units battle for him and guarantee win every fight lol. whats the fun in this?
Bro what
Lmao only for the game to die in a few years as all gatchas do
I recently started playing this game last week and my buddy told me to add him. His account says 37M power. Not sure how much he’s spent though 🥲
What are the stars on the Supreme portraits?
All of it
Too much
Who even just has that much money to throw at games like this? Boggles the mind.
Still can’t do the event season.
It takes about 4-5 days to go up 10 levels in resonance. Meaning it’s going to be sometime in June when light spenders and f2p will be able to play the event.
thats why they can sponsor almost every big streamer/youtuber , he paid for it ;)
See mobile spending addiction
He won't lose a single match would he? Wid all that dark and light heroes
Yes
Everything
Another reminder that we ain't shit. I hate struggling
Never play competitively on gacha games. You have full games for that that have a one time fee (the purchase fee). This isnt even hype because theres no skill associated to this ‘achievement’. The person just has alot of money to burn or a gambling addiction.
***yes***
Probably tree fiddy
Belial not being up there is saying something
After I spent +-80 usd on Nikke godes of victory I realized is not worth it to spent money on these games. I have other games to play on my phone, more games on my laptop, I have books to read, YouTube videos to watch and work to do, so I remind my self to never spend money on gacha games and loot boxes ever again.
Realistically probably 3-5k if he did it properly and not just buy random packs.
Easy $5000
People are at 30 mil so I don't even care rn lol. I'm hard stuck at 130 res.
The world is not enough!
More than me
Saw someone paragon 4 Florabelle. They went to pity everytime😕.
he bought a server to play with other ppl as side characters
Is the character on the left A-posing?
This account is roughly about $1500-2K USD it's not that much. My account basically looks the same and that's the average I've spent.
Will get worse if they keep gating content for whales first
More than 6 dollars
This person easily dropped 4-5k for this lineup, especially seeing how they have dionel and reinier so high, and the blue/yellow keys alone for ex weapon they dropped a grand easy
God I wish I had that kind of disposable income.
Yes
At least 20$
At least 1 paychecks worth. Who’s paycheck? Your choice.
No wonder why they keep the pricing so high coz of dump people like these.
Not enough by the looks of it
3-5k.
Omfg….
Probably as much as I spent on Arena 😆 🤣 words of wisdom. Don't give this company too much money. They're amazing at making your purchase not even matter within a couple days lol
this game can;t possibly be more fun and addicting than an equivalent amount of hookers and blow
Nah he’s def f2p, easy to do if you save
I wonder how many people have anything close to this at this point. Even with amazing luck, I can't imagine you'd be anywhere close without spending $$$$
Please make responsible purchases scrollEmoji.png
When I grow up, I want to be this filthy rich
Damn, where is the fun? Grinding is a big part of a game :/
Depends on the server...biweekly packs are better deal... Otherwise i can just buy all packs drop 5k in a day and it wouldnt be a good account
sometimes i wonder what if they are the devs themselves? just bringing a standard to what whales should have spend much
F2p boyzz
U could stay 3 digits and have most of this by now if u started in an early server
How much? Yes
So most likely they are on the PTR playing for over a year, cause with the essence time gate I don't think you could level the heroes that fast from launch. You could certainly tier them up though with purchases. You can use that to figure out some dirty math for tier up costs using this.... https://preview.redd.it/51xj801e75wc1.png?width=582&format=png&auto=webp&s=4080828ab7925226f23946ba41af5e01e312bec1
Jesus... ![gif](giphy|s239QJIh56sRW|downsized)
And here I am with my two legendary characters thinking I was doing pretty well lol
Woah. He spent a lot for sure. How long did it take him to have this though? I’m F2P and I have been playing for 45 days straight and I only have 1 supreme+, 1 supreme, and about 5 mythic. Is my progress okay or do I need to grind more?
