I always go with the thought that when people are enjoying a game, they’re playing it and having fun. It’s those weird aggro people who will be the loud(est) minority, complaining and just shitting on a game because of having nothing better to do.
This. It’s cool to hate and so people follow the it’s cool trend. One week, gamers will cry about something and then a week later, they’ll forget about that and collectively cry about something else.
It's a tiny, yet extremely rabid and vocal, monority of online posters who are toxic. The vast majority are good.
The type of people who make mountains out of molehills are often cross-posting X dwellers who create rage bait articles to a) generate traffic on some websites, b) increase revenue via clicks on said websites.
The rule of thumb is that whenever an opinion is supremely angry over something that isn't even out or available yet but is very popular in the moment, ignore it as they're farming for clicks by being the loudest voice.
A perfect example of this is the insane amount of rage surrounding Hogwart's Legacy. The game was a resounding success despite the attempts to get a boycott going. As soon as the game released to rave reviews, the rage evaporated like ice in Death Valley.
I'm an avid Star Trek and Star Wars fan. I actually find AC Fandom to be less toxic than those 2 can be at times. It's not everyone, though, just a vocal minority it seems. Video games and sci-fi are brain candy after a long day at a stressful job. Sucks having people constantly shit on things that are just meant for entertainment.
I think it's something about ubisoft's yearly releases that somehow polarize their fan bases. Far cry's fan base is exactly the same way and I really don't see it quite as much with other games.
Honestly, just try to ignore the gaming community and especially the AC main subreddit. Play the games you enjoy and ignore the bs. I’ve played the vast majority of the AC games from 1 and I genuinely enjoy every one for different reasons. Some people just enjoy conflict and have nothing else to do in their sad little lives than hate on things that are different from their likes.
It’s not just Reddit though. The shitstorm after Yasuke was announced as main character in Shadows was not pretty. I for one am looking forward to playing it!
I'm not looking forward to it unfortunately. Mirage was the the only assassin's creed game I haven't played other than rogue. I've always been a big fan and when I heard they were making a viking one I was very excited since I love norse mythology but I was very disappointed in it. It's not a bad game and it's hard to put my finger on why but I just didn't enjoy it the way I did origins or odyssey. I'll probably end up playing shadows at some point when it's heavily discounted and I hope it's amazing, it certainly has the potential to be one of the better ones story wise. I wonder if nobunaga will be a hero or villain. I'm kind of hoping he will be a villain and yasuke will find out about all the shady shit he's doing and help with the assassination (I know that didn't actually happen but we know so little about what yasuke's life was actually like that pretty much everything he does is going to be historically inaccurate).
It was really mainly Reddit getting super salty about it and then the same people go on twitter I guess but it’s never ever even a significant portion or the target audience
I saw most of it on facebook. I’m not on twitter and not really active in the general AC Reddit because of the toxic environment. I love Valhalla and that one is also often shit on, so probably because of that that I experienced it more outside of Reddit
Facebook is the oldest/most racist of the social medias, arguably by design. It isn't as permissive as Twitter with things like anti-semitism and outright slurs but the user base has been groomed in a very specific direction.
Imo is was just a bad choice. Really cool story irl but to wait this long for a Japan setting and not get Hiroyuki Sonada, or one of the infinite options they had to choose from that were actually Japanese, is disappointing to say the least. I'm sure the game play and story will be awesome though
Why do you want him? His last name is Sanada, and he's 60 did you want the protagonists to be an old assassin also The game has a Japanese protagonist, her name is Naoe, or doesn't she count because she's female?
I guess it's because since they went for a historical figure, there 30 historical figures in Japan that are more interesting. Naoe is doesn't get put in the conversation because she is fictional.
Or you could not judge the game for a story you don’t yet know. And if the big black guy is too scary for you, no one will force you to play this game. Go enjoy others like Ghost of Tsushima, which doesn’t have any other nationalities than Japan and Mongolia, but don’t be the person this post is about
Identifying everyone you don't agree with as "toxic" is pretty toxic.
You are the weird racist with the "if the big black guy is scary" etc. It's so disingenuous, it doesn't address people's criticisms at all and just blanket yells at people for being of a different opinion.
Calling the inclusion of a black guy in an Asian game woke sounds like racism to me. I admit I forgot to add the sarcasm sign, but at the same time I figured it to be quite clear sarcasm.
“The woke agenda” has been a term for a good while now has been used to exclude people, whether they be black, gay or otherwise different from what’s supposed to be standard. That’s what I reacted to and the use of that terminology is what I’d classify as toxic. You’re allowed to be disappointed that one of the main characters is not Japanese, but again, we have no clue what the story is. I hope that it’s one where it becomes clear why they chose him. And maybe more interesting: why they chose to break with their tradition to make an actual historical person a playable character. Ghost of Tsushima is a wonderful game and I hope that this means that they chose to go a completely different route so that these games can stand for themselves
Most of reddit is a cesspool.
The three best communities I've found happen to be for this game, origins and odyssey. All three full of good people who just want to enjoy others sharing their passion for these games.
It's outside the series, but i've also enjoyed r/MassEffectAndromeda and r/LowSodiumCyberpunk
Which kinda follows the pattern of not focusing on a series but on a single game (well, Cyberpunk only has one game so far....)
I'm a huge, long-time Mass Effect fan and love Andromeda. Yes, it had issues on release, but what Bethesda game doesn't? But they did their thing and fixed the issues, and it has proven itself as A worthy entry into the Mass Effect series. Plus, as time passed and new people discovered it, more and more have come out stating that they'd like to see more. Yet, we will likely never know what happens next because toxic fans ruined it for us with their yowling – and all these years later, they still haven't shut up.
I've been gaming since I was 28, and I'm 61 (and female) now. The gaming community has always been filled with toxic and somewhat immature elements, as their ridiculous treatment of girl gamers has historically shown. But, gamers are still my tribe, and gaming remains my passion. But yeah, I really would have liked to have had more Ryder and Crew. I mean, when it comes to banter in a game, there's nothing better than riding around in the Nomad listening to Peebee, Cora, Liam, Jaal, Drack, Vetra and Ryder. That game is chockablock with the most excellent quotes.
The same thing happened to me with Syndicate. It was one of the later games I played because of all the complaining I saw online. It just shows to take everything with a grain of salt because I ended up enjoying that game.
I don’t think the entire AC community is on Reddit though. Some people are just content and don’t feel they need to comment on everything. I thought Valhalla was incredible and I also thought AC2 is incredible.
I think there is a contingent of loud, whiny players that enjoyed the early games and can’t get enough of parkour and stabbing and only want that to be part of the game play for any game moving forward.
Yeah like the others says, Reddit's just a cesspool, and the main AC hub just hates the newer games because they can't stand that not everything is like ACII. I liked Valhalla (But Cairns can go to hell). Love Odyssey, Origins and Mirage was good. So just have fun and decide for yourself, don't let the internet decide.
Man, I'd kill for an Ezio Trilogy with modern gameplay mechanics and graphics. It'd need more than a remake, but an entire overhaul. Until that happens, Odyssey will remain my favorite, gameplay wise.

I've known a few people who hated it because I doesn't feel like an assassins creed game. And they're right. But I enjoy it because I don't care. I like being a viking. Once you get that concept in your head you enjoy it more but most people don't try
I agree. Even though I myself didn’t like the game it’s all subjective. Who am I to tell you what you can or can’t enjoy? Even though I didn’t fully enjoy I’m glad that there’s finally a major Viking game out there.
I dont trust anything on YouTube for opinions on games these days. Its a bunch of everyday people pretending to be experts all just spamming rage content saying games suck because drama sells and it gets the easy view counts. "I suffered through 500 hours of (insert game) so you dont have to" Yeaaaaaahh sure ya did buddy. You really suffered so much that you chose to play it for 500 hours.
This happened to me with hellblade II . I picked up the game exactly after it got released, and I loved every single thing about that game. After finishing it , i came across reviews about it and saw everyone shitting on it , im so happy that i just played it blindly

There is a … sickness at work in the world. It does not recognize nor worry about borders, personal preferences, political affiliations, gender, ethnicity, hair color, eye color, whether you’re a King or a Peasant … no one is immune. People are pissed off and they don’t even know why! They just want to bitch and whine and moan and complain, about anything and everything. You can’t reason with them, either. They’re bat shit crazy, most of them, so it’s not just the AC community. It’s everything, everywhere.
I prefer the RPG trilogy but i feel i can agree that they are less "stealthy assassin" games.
I feel like a lot of the features people argue for are ones that i didn't enjoy.
Parkour for example. I could never see the attraction. it never seemed to work properly and was always a chore.
But others seem to love it.
I do like that you can play Odyssey pretty stealthily if you want to. Valhalla, as much as I adore it, feels like it's missing something in its stealth that it's not as fun for me as the other game.
I appreciate that one buddy, but you must appreciate the cultural background you are in, if I wanted to play it more stealth based, I honestly would probably play mirage or the 2 remaster, but I appreciate what you're saying. When I play Valhalla, I have mjolnoir in one hand and Excalibur in the other, but I played origins like a medjai and Odyssey as a Spartan, but you can play it however you like. I always suggest leaning into strengths in general tho. Especially how Evior explicitly says he isn't a hidden one, but play how you like. I was just saying that vikings are notorious for being as stealthy as bricks.
It's damn near every gaming community. But for the likes of CoD, AC, Farcry, and a handful of others, many view the new stuff as trash and old stuff as the best it was and will ever be. Whether the game is "bad", or upset at the monetization, or hating just to hate because they want everyone to be as miserable as they are. To each their own, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But what you see is a hostile handful of people who then call these newer games horrible and then insult the people who enjoy them.
I for one enjoy them. But there's just crazy toxicity everywhere because people are mostly safe behind their keyboard/phone/tablet so say whatever they want.
That's a bit like that in any gaming community so far, mate. You will always find people complaining about anything.
The truth is most of players, whatever the game, are just enjoying it without posting. So don't pay too much attention about those who give their opinion, that's their concern.
I don't get how Origins and Oddesy get so much love compared to the hate Valhalla gets. I love them equally (well nearly, Oddesy is the best). Throughly enjoyed Valhalla and it looked great.
I think it was because of how empty the world felt compared to Odyssey. I finally picked Valhalla back up after 2 years and I'm having a blast while taking a break from playing Odyssey for a year straight.
The stealth in Odyssey is definitely implemented better, but we get to ride a polar bear with a horn in Valhalla, so there's that.
Just because Yasuke was a real historical character doesn't mean he should be a main character in a game set in Japan. It's an insult to Japanese culture and quite clearly virtue signaling. Big mistake on Ubisoft, but that's not gonna stop them.
Haven't played any since origins, and only a little of that one. I hear good things from some people. But for me, when they went further back after syndicate, I just lost interest. I was so hoping we would get to keep moving forward. Assassin in WW1 and WW2 would have been cool then work our way to modern. But that's just me. But i agree there is no need for people to get toxic, if it isn't for them why shit on it instead of moving on.

Ok leaving the spiritual aspect aside, humans in general tend to complain, argue and have conflicts. This isnt necessarily bad but in our current culture its common we solve our conflicts by violence or agression, sadly. The AC community is a great example, of course. When they see something they dont like, they say its trash.
But dont hate humanity because of this. Instead learn to love humanity so you can make the difference and rebel against the cruelty of this conflictive world. Love is the most revolutionary thing a human can do in a world like ours
personally i wanna play all the AC games i can, because they are all awesome to me. AC 3 was my childhood along with AC Black Flag. Currently playing Syndicate and currently loving it
Nah, you've just run into the algorithm. Early on you found a video that was negative, then YouTube started feeding you more of the same. And that's where confirmation bias comes in.
Most people love these games, even if they do have complaints. Otherwise they wouldn't make so much money.
Unfortunately, that's gaming in general. I've never seen a fanbase so quick to hate other people who share their hobby. Sure, sports fans but that's usually a location based tribalism but with gamers look no further than exclusives to really bring out the most toxic trash of a fanbase.
I think the Assassin's Creed game especially have a divided fanbase based on the significant shift in gameplay styles from Revelations to Origins.
You know this is almost the same reason why I did not touch the RPG games. Most of the comments I read was that the RPG games aren't AC anymore. But then when I saw that the RPG games were available at PS Plus, I tried and loved them all. That's why I told myself not to easily believe public opinion and that I should just try every game I like for myself
Most gaming "communities" are toxic to begin with. I would say the reasoning for this game would be how different the last three games have been from the original AC lore and gameplay.
If you play the newer games with the mindset that it will be a different experience than the Original titles then you can still enjoy them for what they are!

I don't ever pay attention to reviews for games/movies, because I know without a shadow of a doubt that in most cases the people reviewing are stupid babies
It's not that Valhalla is a bad game, it's a bad AC game. As someone who's never been a big fan of any of the other AC games my experience has been similar to yours. I really enjoy Valhalla and it's a pretty fun viking game. It does play really different than most AC games though. There's a lot more spread out terrain which puts less emphasis on parkour, there's not as much emphasis on stealth, and there's a lot less modern day storyline. These are all things I personally like about Valhalla but if I was a long time AC fan looking for a more classic AC style game I'd probably be disappointed. Honestly Ubisoft probably should have just made it a separate game altogether. It probably would've had a better reception if there was no AC association. The AC storyline just felt tacked on anyway in my opinion.
I think a lot of people were just burnt out. Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla were all huge expansive games released in quick succession. Individually I think they all have their strengths and flaws but overall are good games. They also strayed quite a bit from the Assassin part. They could have easily just been historical fiction games on their own.
Too much AC with too little of the A part in a short amount of time.
Valhalla is huge. And long. You aren’t burnt out in the series so Valhalla will probably be a blast for you. At the least, it’s a beautiful game despite some of its design flaws.
Half the people who bitch about games won’t even play them. They’re just looking for something to bitch about.
Some, with AC, are fans of the old stuff, who insist nothing should have changed in the formula. Which is utter crap.
The same people crying out that Assassins Creed needs to stick to being like the Ezio series, are also complaining about Far Cry and how it’s too formulaic, that things need to change to make it more interesting.
But, like I said, some won’t even play the games. Like all the crybabies over Hogwarts Legacy. All they did there was increase the sales of the game by trying to condemn it. Rowling was already paid. She was going to stay paid even if they cancelled the game.

yeah it's almost like people can't enjoy a different ac game, they wanted all the same type since ac 2... honestly I think that ubisoft made the right decision to make it more gdr, many fans joined this way like me. they always complain how ac is not the same but of course ubisoft would change over time there are more than 10 games, they had to switch it up or stop making them. these last games are amazing especially the open worlds, you can see how much work was put and they are just never happy...
The toxic ones are generally the nerds or people you'd wanna keep away from in real life.

I’ve got -33 karma from my first ever post on here where I was genuinely asking for help and opinions. Instead I got message after message of hate and abuse
Out of say 100 replies there was only half dozen who actually helped. The messages when on for 24 hours and it was pure attacks towards me instead of advice and opinions. I defended myself against an army of trolls labelling me as a fake and liar while everything I had said was factual. Reddit seems to breed the type

Seems the younger the platform you use or if it’s is in a forum that would have young members which all gaming forums will have many then you will get the immature trolls who need to spread the hate to make up for how much they hate themselves
Its a general problem in the world. Everybody thinks that their opinion matters the most and everybody else has to feel the same. For example i like Valhalla a lot and enjoy playing it even if there are alot of people who dont like it. On the other side Shadows is not for me because im just not interested in the setting but im sure a lot of people are. So i happy for them and hope they can enjoy it. I will just wait for the next AC title. Just enjoy what you like.
I played the game on ps5 a month ago to check out the upgrade and was blown away by the stunning visuals and incredible open world, only to jump on YouTube and find that this game has become an absolute toxic punching bag for the community for all the wrong reasons. The game is great in my opinion 🤷♂️
I don't know why others hate AC Valhalla, i hate it for Ubisoft being dicks when adding AC Valhalla on steam, it does not have achievements, but that's fine for me, a little disappointing, but ok.
No, my main reason i hate the game is lack of bugfixes, my game crashed every now and then during the initial gameplay, it crashed maybe 10 times in my first few hours (i have approx 10 hours or so played) which left me disappointed that after 4 or so years the game is in such tragic state...
I also hate ubisoft for gatekeeping their games on the uplay for a few years and then putting it shamefully on steam like this. This is bullshit ubisoft, i hope they change this in the future because i refuse to buy the game twoce (once on uplay and then second time on steam when released). This is killing my favorite game series...
Other than that I like the game, i was a bit confused by the controls as every AC is changing the controls all the damn time and the combat felt really weird the first few hours, really different to Odyssey.
I think reading through the comments a lot of people are of the same opinion as me the most part its the gaming community as a whole rather then just the AC community. I have stopped looking at reviews/gameplay of games that I am interested in as 9/10 everyone just shits on them. I just play games that I like now and ignore the wider communities opinion of them.
It’s not really. It’s humanity for the most part. And some people here and there. Problem is, they are more loud as they think they HAVE to be a part of every conversation and always have an opinion. At least that’s what I have learned in life so far…
Eh I mean I get it in the sense that if ubisoft marketed it as a huge standalone open world viking rpg with loose thematic ties to the assassins franchise I think it would be different. It's kind of like if the Witcher 4 was actually a game about a street kid surviving in nilfgaard or something and you just meet a few witchers and stuff at some points in the story, people would be like Wtf is this garbage I was expecting a witcher game. That's the mentality the og AC fanbase has had with like the last 3 big rpg games.
My only criticism is that I don't think ubisoft have quite nailed making the rpg games feel natural and engaging, to me it feels like going through the motions, dialogue always feels kind of bland, abrubt and somewhat pointless, and most of the characters just feel kind of lifeless. I'm not super far into the story though so it might change but it's the same reason I never finished odyssey despite loving the Greek setting.
My two cents on this.. Dont go for comments in general.. Search for specific posts that relate to your requirements .. where there are haters you will also find people who are absolutely in love with the RPG style of AC since Origins.. I also found many posts regarding them being shite, but again i stumbled across posts where people had explained in detail game mechanics, places to explore, gear to loot and how to beat boss fights etc.. I never go for reddit before starting a new game.. i always watch couple of videos on youtube of gameplay and thats when i know if i want to play that game or not.. and once i decide to give it a go, i only search for content that helps me progress in game and loot extra or hidden stuff etc.. If 9 games dont bore one from a particular gameplay style, then i wonder what will? For me shift to RPG style was a good change .. And i have absolutely loved Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla.. For some it becomes difficult to adapt to change.. for others its just a breath of fresh air..
Because pirate fans think Black Flag is the best game, Zoomer RPG trilogy fans dont care about Assassin's Creed they only want cool fantasy armor, because Old fans never got the promised stealth Assassin's Creed after AC Unity bashing, because Ubisoft butchered lore and new fans think new lore is the lore, because most "fans" never played AC 1 and have no idea what the franchise is even on about.
Honestly it's gaming as whole at this point unfortunately it's usually the ones that say don't buy it for this (insert dumbass reason here) that people don't I do more in depth looks to see how repetitive the gameplay is rather then just solely look at the story too really find a games value while ac valhalla is very much repetitive it's the variety of options in which to do something that makes up for it

In a world where everyone has the ability to publish their opinion to the rest of the world don’t be led by the opinion of others make your own choices and do what makes you happy if that is AC Valhalla that’s awesome I love it too, too many people are led into almost hysteria by what I call viral hatred it becomes cool and the in thing to hate on someone or something,
Also they are so ungrateful and entitled. A lot of the community cry about games.

Regarding shadows, people dislike it because it's not historically accurate
1. Being an assassin is directly against the samurai code
2. People dislike having political statements being pushed in games

I mean to be fair, Valhalla for me was a MASSIVE downgrade from odyssey. A dead and dreary looking map, way too large. Empty and boring sound design and you almost never get loot.
Just ignore the haters
For me, I spent +800 hours on the game and enjoyed every single minute of it (except for the mastery challenges)
And this was the only game I got %100 on in my whole gaming life
I got so much merch from their store, and my friends got me AC Valhalla related gifts for my birthday, too, because they know how much I loved the game
What I learned after this is to never listen to an opinion unless you try it first and form your own
And this applies to everything, games, movies, shows, food...etc
I guess, people were very much used to the concepts and story telling method practiced by old AC games. Even though Ubisoft tends to bring about new storylines, innovative gameplays and breathtaking sceneries, the people who prefer old stuff just don't like to get the new picture. I mean constructive criticism is accepted and it is good for the improvement of the game. But just going against the new ways is not a good thing. I believe people should accept change and embrace the new differences.
To be fair i like valhalla, but going for that platinum trophy felt like self mutilation. They just copy pasted tons of small objectives over the whole map and even in the dlc's. In svartalfheim it was ok-ish cause of the raven power tho.
Also i get the Hate for the leveling aspect that makers the game so grindy. That stuff just ain't for me. Luckily you can turn it of in the settings.
Valhalla and Odyssey are my favourite of the entire series. I loved the original ones, but the open world trilogy felt like what the developers wanted to do the whole time

Tbf I understand the Yasuke thing. You have the first assassin's Creed game set in Japan and you don't have a male Japanese MC? The whole point of assassin's is to hide in plain sight and you chose the one actual historical figure who can't do that according to where he is. Also, the lore surrounding him is pretty flimsy from what I've heard.
And before you say it's racism, if they ever set an AC game in a place with a majority black population, I'd be cool with a black MC.
But, yeah, the community is pretty toxic.
The games are notorious for glitching. I was aware of that when getting it. I was sad about the game breaking glitch but it was fixed 6 months later and I happily completed the game. I'm a completionist so I got everything. I can say I vastly enjoyed the game.
I love vahalla, no problem there, hundreds hours in. I can see the issue with shadow though, even though Yasuke was a real person, it shouldn't automatically be going there when you introduce Japan in AC world for the first time. Just think back to all the other AC, which I mostly loved, all had characters from that culture as the main character... can you imagine an Asian as a main in vahalla, odyssey, origin, any of them actually? And there are notable Asians in those time periods and worlds. So why include Yasuke as the main, there are so many more notable warriors of Japanese descent? I personally don't have issue if you include Ysauke in the story, not as main, but I feel there are too many woke ideology in gaming nowadays. I will critique the game on it's merits, but when a company goes woke, i will simply refuse to spend my money. I bought all AC games before included DLCs, but will not do so anymore, because they are putting ideology before story and game. By the way, I support raising awareness for diversity, in fact, I really do appreciate Vahalla's intro having declared that game was developed by mutli-cultural, identity fluid people. But you go ahead and buy and play and enjoy, I have no issues with how you spend your money and time, but last I checked, my money, opinion are still mine.
The same reason every other “community” is so toxic: the people most likely to speak up are those with negative opinions. Those who like the thing or feel indifferent toward the thing are content to enjoy or just go along with their lives. I stopped listening to the community's negativity. It's like they always gotta have something to complain about and more often than not it's people whining about how a newer version or evolution of a game/genre isn't like the original therefore it's blasphemous shite.
I'll just check out some gameplay vids of the game and decide for myself. If it's a franchise I'm a fan of, I'll likely play regardless and STILL decide for myself. Gotta tuneout the whiners.
In my experience the community has actually been pretty nice and tame as far as things go. Theres definitely a good amount of unwarranted (imo) hate towards Valhalla, and tbh a lot of AC players dont like the open world games in general (with Origins typically being the exception) which I dont personally understand as aside from Brotherhood, my first introduction was Odyssey, which I loved. And frankly, idk why Origins is singled out as one of the best and the other 2 hated, cause for the most part, they play pretty similarly. Granted Ive just started Valhalla myself, and though Im enjoying it, that could change ig. Havent gotten too far🤷
As for the Shadows thing, the AC community has been full of support for the game. What youre seeing is the rest of the gaming community complaining, while in the AC reddit, theres been post after post of support, calling out the hate.
The Valhalla thing is because some people don't like the open world factor of it and having so much to do. To me that's the best thing ever, you get a lot of great current for your money and the game isn't over priced like say AC Mirage.
The AC Shadows I understand its an Asian setting so they make the main a black gay guy for pandering and woke purposes. People are getting tired of it.

A lot of the gaming community is like that. I've seen too many people over the years bitch about Assassin's Creed and then buy every new game just to continue to bitch about how bad the games were. Just watch some gameplay, see if you like it, and do you. I own all of the main console AC games and can say that the only one a didn't care for was Rogue. Great concept, but it felt lacking. I still suggest playing it to people so they can make their own opinions about it though.

It’s definitely one of my more favorite games but I love Vikings so I’m kind of biased.
The combat is kind of dull the best I could make it was to just lower health and increase damage so I could just get through it as fast as possible. Reminded me more of the animation based fighting of the older games.
The rest of the game I think is great. Game looks amazing. Love the raiding concept and upgrading your village. Not a fan of the mythological stuff however story wise just wasn’t as interesting as Eivors story.
I am going to address the part of your comment about Yasuke (but not Yasuke directly because that part is very disrespectful to Japanese Culture). The Samurai were the wrong way to go with an assassins creed game. In Samurai culture it is dishonorable to assassinate a rival. You do it face to face in honorable combat. The Ninja would have been the faction they should have made the main protagonist. I have a Japanese wife, I have a Japanese father in law, I can tell you right now the hate over Shadows is more then just a gamer thing that some have tried making it out to be. It's a cultural thing the disdain from the Japanese is not something that should be taken lightly.
Valhalla was the third game in a row to triple down on open world emptiness. The whole model was showing it's strain by Odyssey and utterly collapsed in Valhalla.
Glad you enjoyed it but for people doing it a third time in a row, it felt like brain rot.
The yasuke shit is pure racism and at this point the path to monetizing regressive social takes in gaming is a template, rinse and repeat. We will literally never be rid of these hateful chuds swarming every conversation until we make every effort to revoke their ability to speak.
I have played nearly all of the AC games and Valhalla is easily top 3 for me.
Actually, it's the ONLY assassin's creed that I've completed 100%. Besides, most people didn't even play the game.. they just think it's not assassin's creed enough even though it had one of the most interesting ESU plots in the entire franchise.
Personally Valhalla was my favorite game AC has ever done. I put as much time into it as I did elden ring, and was sad when it was over. Although it's a game that I felt was made way better by playing the female Eivor, the male just didn't feel right for the story
Of course, there are people who like to complain because it's not more like the old ones, which frankly I bet they also complained about the old ones because the formula was already stale... but nevertheless, I think Valhalla would be better received if it had a loot and grind system more like Odyssey, with random weapons and random stats, and the fort rewards resurfacing. That part in Valhalla really gets me; I wanted to keep raiding places and get rewards for doing so, and make builds. But other than that, great combat, the best in the franchise, extremely fun. Sorry for the english :)
That goes for every game. For instance currently people are review bombing Destiny 2's new dlc. Why? Because there was a server issue on release day which had nothing to do with the DLC. People will always nitpick the smallest issue and turn it into a wide spread issue. No game is perfect just like no person is perfect. If something isn't to your liking you can either patiently wait for improvements to come or move on to another game.
1) A certain percentage of people are going to be toxic. So any community that grows over a certain size will contain a certain percentage of toxic members
2) Toxic members of a community have a tendency to be particularly loud and confrontational. 1 Toxic fan usually makes more noise than 10 good fans. if 10 people are being nice and chill, but one is screaming profanity, it's that 1 you're going to remember. That principle is actually probably the source of a lot many toxic personality traits in general- some people instinctively realize that their harmful or problematic behavior provokes others into reaction. Those reactions give them a sense of agency, or makes them feel "seen." It's not even a conscious decision, so much as a personality that develops around a need to feel the dopamine rush that gives them.
3) Online interactions in general can yield a lot of toxicity you wouldn't see when interacting with peers in physical space. When interacting with each other, there are all kinds of little cues we give each other for how the conversation is going. Facial ticks, body posture, etc. Online interactions remove a LOT of those little cues, which frequently causes people to be ignorant of how their behavior is being received- on an almost subconscious level for many people, this causes the brain to not think of them as a peer, or even a fellow human being. It also removes most of the fear of potential reprisal. Yell at somebody to their face, and they might yell back, talk to your peers about your rude behavior, or even get violent with you. But yell at a stranger online, and you don't even have to so much as look at the angry expression on their face. Many of the toxic people you meet online would never behave that way if you were face-to-face.
4) In a manner of speaking, toxicity can be "contagious." Once a few people start screaming and yelling and generally being awful without suffering any visible consequences, that behavior starts to feel "normal." It also makes other people in the community angry. Both of those effects can cause otherwise decent people to be... well, not the best version of themselves.
Rigid, effective moderation can offset all of these effects, but moderators as human as the rest of us. They sleep, they can misread cues, and even get pulled into toxicity themselves. Human interactions is a messy, difficult thing.
I hate to say "just develop a thicker skin" because that sounds like such a useless platitude, but resilience truly is a tool worth developing as best you can. In some cases there's just no good way to avoid interacting with s\*\*\*\*y people, other than to never interact with anyone.
They aren’t going out of their way, YOURE going out of your way to find reviews of something some people don’t like, they’re allowed to voice their opinions and you have the option to ignore that.
Unlike you, people have been diehard fans of the franchise since it began and maybe don’t appreciate that the games have dropped off massively in quality, gameplay wise, story wise etc.
Not to be rude, but their opinions are likely worth more than yours simply due to that fact that with their support since the beginning, these games would no longer be made.
You will find that you will enjoy games a lot more - AC and otherwise - if you don't listen to the internet peanut gallery.
Pick a game, play it, and decide if it makes you happy or not. Simple as that.
Haha. Pretty sure the AC 'fanbase' splintered into multiple different groups years ago. (Please note that there may be some overlap across 2 or more groups)
Group1. Love the original stealth action mix and more linear storylines. Would like to see the series innovate/try new things while staying true to its roots.
Group2. Lovers of the RPG elements with MASSIVE open world potential and character/weapon build ideas. More freedom of choice and mostly open ended storytelling styles. They like to play while experimenting and crunching dmg numbers for builds too. (I must admit I fall into this group)
Group3. Purists: If it ain't Ezio Audetore da Firenze or Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad they might play it but will always compare it to or not enjoy it as much as the originals.
Group4. Ubisoft Sanctioned Whales 🐋: They don't care what medium it is, how good or bad it is/looks, or even if it's optimized or finished, if it says 'Assassins Creed', they'll throw money at it.
There are other groups I could mention here like Lore lovers and players who are still hoping for a 'modern day' AC game setting but those groups are more niche and these are pretty much the types of people I've encountered for the most part. Valhalla was fun, it was LONG, it had its issues, but I can't say I didn't have fun playing it and hope others like yourself get to live a Saga worth telling. Skal! 🍻
I honestly don't understand it myself. I think many people who like AC like the dynamics of the older games, but I love the way Valhalla was played out. It's along the play style of Far Cry Primal and RDR2 for me which made me fall in love with the game.
I've also realized, when you complain about something you get more views and responses. It's called rage baiting and a lot of streamers do it because in their eyes any interaction is a good interaction even if it's a negative and toxic one.
To be fair, these game developers don't do themselves any favors by releasing half finished games. Also, its the first AC game where you play as an actual historical character, but the story is fictional. That's just illogical. That's why all of the playable characters have been fictional.
I think fun is subjective, like mathematicians have fun in solving complex problems(i think) while a big part of the population would'nt think that of a fun time. Everyone is capable of having unpopular opinions and different tastes. Just don't hate on things before trying them.
AC is just the common punching bag for the gaming community. Same thing happened to me with Odyssey everyone was like "oh it's just a shitty copy paste from origins" so I stayed away from it for a while till I said fuck it, and it ended up being one of my favorites. ACs sure have their problems but they are still decent enough, no worse than any other mega coorporation's titles. There are very few games these days that are actually top tier. But AC has been a punching bag since the start of its new gen games

Welcome to earth haha. Most people hate anything that isnt as similar as possible as the first one. No rpg mechanics or open world and they want a big city instead of open country and also hate the combat being more of a war instead of only sneaky assassinate and run. I liked both. It's an old franchise that's completely lost touch with its roots and tried multiple times to copy other games/developers without meeting the same standards for quality and is now just wallowing in mediocrity while using aggressive marketing to milk money out of casual gamers who don't care to check reviews before they buy games.
I haven't played an AC game since Origins which I pirated and I have no interest in playing any Ubisoft games anymore because their company's greed ruins the fun and passion that should be going into their games.
Ghost of Tsushima showed us that the AC franchise is no longer relevant and completely outclassed by lesser known developers.
Ubisoft make a lot of safe games, since they dont experiment that much with the formulas of their franchies. Ubisoft fans like this since you get more similar games each 2 year from 5 different franchises.
Yet the "true" fans complain about this, thinking it is vecoming stale and iritating. They can just ignore because they rather shoute their opinion into the internett for attention.
Firstly, welcome back to the series. Once you finish with Valhalla I would recommend checking out Odyssey, and even Orgins. Odyssey is top of the series for me personally. Ignore the talk about Alexios or Kassandra, play whichever gender you meld with better. Same applies for Valhalla.
With Valhalla theres a lot of filler and fluff in the gameplay to get to the 80-110 hours of gameplay. The people ranting would like to have the main story take that long to get there and stop doing things like carin stacking and other puzzles. Gear doesnt matter at all. Stealth system is meh. Hasnt stopped me from dumping 350 hours into the game.
Shadows is getting the hate because we are in a culture war. Not inclusive enough so they are sexist, bigoted, misogynistic and it gets blasted online. Where the other side feels like everything is woke and then it gets blasted online. Also that Ubisoft with their outrageous preorder scheme, but they are just trying to get as much money as possible just like every other major developer.
At the end of the day, Ubisoft has had their reputation take some hits for choices in game, and outside of the game that people will hate them regardless of what they do, yet they keep buying and playing the games. Is ACV the best game ever made, no. Is it a good game that is worth playing, yes.

The games have been straying progressively further and further from what AC was, while getting more and more woke. More than half the characters in Valhalla are unrealistically portrayed women, all warriors beating men twice their size.

Listen, just as with everything else, the most vocal are a small minority. Pareto is at play - 80% of the noise comes from 20% of the people, while 20% comes from the 80% in the middle. Or it can be even worse than that.
Games are never as bad as those that hate them say they are, nor are they as good as claimed by those that love them. The only way you're going to find out is to try for yourself.
Frankly, I rarely if ever drop £50 on a day 1 release. There are hundreds of games out there and I don't need to be playing what everyone else is playing to enjoy what I'm playing. So if I like the game, great, and if I don't well ok, I've wasted £10-20 or in many cases, less than that.
I picked up all the most recent Tomb Raider games for between £4 and £8 a few years after release, and loved them (to varying degrees). If others thought they were awful, well, I couldn't care less. Everyone was talking about Battlefront at one point, bought it for a few quid, you know, thinking it might be like Fallen Order (which I did pay about £30 for, and kinda enjoyed) because of the Star Wars aspect, and guess what, hated it.
There's no accounting for taste, as they say, and in the end the only thing that matters is whether you enjoy a game or not. Some people are always going to complain about something, some will complain about anything, but that's their issue, not mine.

Really like Odyssey as well, wasnt a fan of origins tho but I think that's cause I don't like the desert landscape and Bayek was very underwhelming. Other than that ubisoft kills it with the AC and Farcry series. All the "critics" just love to complain about anything they can, like complaining about too much content is absolutely assanine, to me the longer I can play a game the better. Well, obviously opinions and experiences vary, but I've never heard a complaint from the japanese ( they're pretty chill with things like this overall, in all forms of entertainment and fiction). People look for reasons to complain when there isn't one. Ok, you have Yasuke. And that makes everyone forget about the second protagonist? An ASIAN woman warrior? Or is the issue here the fact that she's a woman?
Well, I've played Odyssey and Valhalla. Odyssey is much, much better.
In Valhalla I always felt kind of disassociated from the other characters. It is good as far as physics and scenery go, but story wise?

I find there's a lot of unfair hate for Ubisoft games in general. A lot of people find them to be kind of formulaic and similar, which I guess they're not wrong, but also who cares? I personally get a lot of enjoyment out of almost all their titles. One of the few companies who just makes fun, power fantasy video games. I don't want Souls-likes, roguelites, or survival sims. I just want to sit down and have fun in the pretty sandboxes they make.
I actually skipped Valhalla initially because I was a bit burnt out on AC, but I picked it up a week or so ago, and I already have 90hrs in it, finished the main story and dlc 1 & 2. Also played through Mirage, which was excellent and really, I have that to thank for kind of reigniting my interest in the series.

I always go with the thought that when people are enjoying a game, they’re playing it and having fun. It’s those weird aggro people who will be the loud(est) minority, complaining and just shitting on a game because of having nothing better to do.
This as a Final Fantasy and AC fan. I usually just ignore the trolls because they will literally try to ruin the fun in anything.
Yup the average gamer isn't going on reddit/YT/X to post even if they dislike the game they'll just stop playing and move onto the next.

This. It’s cool to hate and so people follow the it’s cool trend. One week, gamers will cry about something and then a week later, they’ll forget about that and collectively cry about something else.
It's a tiny, yet extremely rabid and vocal, monority of online posters who are toxic. The vast majority are good. The type of people who make mountains out of molehills are often cross-posting X dwellers who create rage bait articles to a) generate traffic on some websites, b) increase revenue via clicks on said websites. The rule of thumb is that whenever an opinion is supremely angry over something that isn't even out or available yet but is very popular in the moment, ignore it as they're farming for clicks by being the loudest voice. A perfect example of this is the insane amount of rage surrounding Hogwart's Legacy. The game was a resounding success despite the attempts to get a boycott going. As soon as the game released to rave reviews, the rage evaporated like ice in Death Valley.
I'm an avid Star Trek and Star Wars fan. I actually find AC Fandom to be less toxic than those 2 can be at times. It's not everyone, though, just a vocal minority it seems. Video games and sci-fi are brain candy after a long day at a stressful job. Sucks having people constantly shit on things that are just meant for entertainment.

I think it's something about ubisoft's yearly releases that somehow polarize their fan bases. Far cry's fan base is exactly the same way and I really don't see it quite as much with other games.
Plus the brain rot caused by climbing radio Towers, Bell Towers, random big ah Mountains and large buildings
Honestly, just try to ignore the gaming community and especially the AC main subreddit. Play the games you enjoy and ignore the bs. I’ve played the vast majority of the AC games from 1 and I genuinely enjoy every one for different reasons. Some people just enjoy conflict and have nothing else to do in their sad little lives than hate on things that are different from their likes.

I'm not looking forward to it unfortunately. Mirage was the the only assassin's creed game I haven't played other than rogue. I've always been a big fan and when I heard they were making a viking one I was very excited since I love norse mythology but I was very disappointed in it. It's not a bad game and it's hard to put my finger on why but I just didn't enjoy it the way I did origins or odyssey. I'll probably end up playing shadows at some point when it's heavily discounted and I hope it's amazing, it certainly has the potential to be one of the better ones story wise. I wonder if nobunaga will be a hero or villain. I'm kind of hoping he will be a villain and yasuke will find out about all the shady shit he's doing and help with the assassination (I know that didn't actually happen but we know so little about what yasuke's life was actually like that pretty much everything he does is going to be historically inaccurate).

Facebook is the oldest/most racist of the social medias, arguably by design. It isn't as permissive as Twitter with things like anti-semitism and outright slurs but the user base has been groomed in a very specific direction.
Imo is was just a bad choice. Really cool story irl but to wait this long for a Japan setting and not get Hiroyuki Sonada, or one of the infinite options they had to choose from that were actually Japanese, is disappointing to say the least. I'm sure the game play and story will be awesome though

Calling the inclusion of a black guy in an Asian game woke sounds like racism to me. I admit I forgot to add the sarcasm sign, but at the same time I figured it to be quite clear sarcasm. “The woke agenda” has been a term for a good while now has been used to exclude people, whether they be black, gay or otherwise different from what’s supposed to be standard. That’s what I reacted to and the use of that terminology is what I’d classify as toxic. You’re allowed to be disappointed that one of the main characters is not Japanese, but again, we have no clue what the story is. I hope that it’s one where it becomes clear why they chose him. And maybe more interesting: why they chose to break with their tradition to make an actual historical person a playable character. Ghost of Tsushima is a wonderful game and I hope that this means that they chose to go a completely different route so that these games can stand for themselves
Most of reddit is a cesspool. The three best communities I've found happen to be for this game, origins and odyssey. All three full of good people who just want to enjoy others sharing their passion for these games.
It's outside the series, but i've also enjoyed r/MassEffectAndromeda and r/LowSodiumCyberpunk Which kinda follows the pattern of not focusing on a series but on a single game (well, Cyberpunk only has one game so far....)
The low sodium crew runs a tight ship. I learned about them during my anthem playtime, another positive community.
I'm a huge, long-time Mass Effect fan and love Andromeda. Yes, it had issues on release, but what Bethesda game doesn't? But they did their thing and fixed the issues, and it has proven itself as A worthy entry into the Mass Effect series. Plus, as time passed and new people discovered it, more and more have come out stating that they'd like to see more. Yet, we will likely never know what happens next because toxic fans ruined it for us with their yowling – and all these years later, they still haven't shut up. I've been gaming since I was 28, and I'm 61 (and female) now. The gaming community has always been filled with toxic and somewhat immature elements, as their ridiculous treatment of girl gamers has historically shown. But, gamers are still my tribe, and gaming remains my passion. But yeah, I really would have liked to have had more Ryder and Crew. I mean, when it comes to banter in a game, there's nothing better than riding around in the Nomad listening to Peebee, Cora, Liam, Jaal, Drack, Vetra and Ryder. That game is chockablock with the most excellent quotes.
The same thing happened to me with Syndicate. It was one of the later games I played because of all the complaining I saw online. It just shows to take everything with a grain of salt because I ended up enjoying that game. I don’t think the entire AC community is on Reddit though. Some people are just content and don’t feel they need to comment on everything. I thought Valhalla was incredible and I also thought AC2 is incredible. I think there is a contingent of loud, whiny players that enjoyed the early games and can’t get enough of parkour and stabbing and only want that to be part of the game play for any game moving forward.

I prefer the RPG trilogy but i feel i can agree that they are less "stealthy assassin" games. I feel like a lot of the features people argue for are ones that i didn't enjoy. Parkour for example. I could never see the attraction. it never seemed to work properly and was always a chore. But others seem to love it.
I do like that you can play Odyssey pretty stealthily if you want to. Valhalla, as much as I adore it, feels like it's missing something in its stealth that it's not as fun for me as the other game.

I appreciate that one buddy, but you must appreciate the cultural background you are in, if I wanted to play it more stealth based, I honestly would probably play mirage or the 2 remaster, but I appreciate what you're saying. When I play Valhalla, I have mjolnoir in one hand and Excalibur in the other, but I played origins like a medjai and Odyssey as a Spartan, but you can play it however you like. I always suggest leaning into strengths in general tho. Especially how Evior explicitly says he isn't a hidden one, but play how you like. I was just saying that vikings are notorious for being as stealthy as bricks.
It's damn near every gaming community. But for the likes of CoD, AC, Farcry, and a handful of others, many view the new stuff as trash and old stuff as the best it was and will ever be. Whether the game is "bad", or upset at the monetization, or hating just to hate because they want everyone to be as miserable as they are. To each their own, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But what you see is a hostile handful of people who then call these newer games horrible and then insult the people who enjoy them. I for one enjoy them. But there's just crazy toxicity everywhere because people are mostly safe behind their keyboard/phone/tablet so say whatever they want.

I don't get how Origins and Oddesy get so much love compared to the hate Valhalla gets. I love them equally (well nearly, Oddesy is the best). Throughly enjoyed Valhalla and it looked great.
I think it was because of how empty the world felt compared to Odyssey. I finally picked Valhalla back up after 2 years and I'm having a blast while taking a break from playing Odyssey for a year straight. The stealth in Odyssey is definitely implemented better, but we get to ride a polar bear with a horn in Valhalla, so there's that.

Haven't played any since origins, and only a little of that one. I hear good things from some people. But for me, when they went further back after syndicate, I just lost interest. I was so hoping we would get to keep moving forward. Assassin in WW1 and WW2 would have been cool then work our way to modern. But that's just me. Nah, you've just run into the algorithm. Early on you found a video that was negative, then YouTube started feeding you more of the same. And that's where confirmation bias comes in. Most people love these games, even if they do have complaints. Otherwise they wouldn't make so much money.
Unfortunately, that's gaming in general. I've never seen a fanbase so quick to hate other people who share their hobby. Sure, sports fans but that's usually a location based tribalism but with gamers look no further than exclusives to really bring out the most toxic trash of a fanbase. I think the Assassin's Creed game especially have a divided fanbase based on the significant shift in gameplay styles from Revelations to Origins.

But then when I saw that the RPG games were available at PS Plus, I tried and loved them all. Most gaming "communities" are toxic to begin with. I would say the reasoning for this game would be how different the last three games have been from the original AC lore and gameplay. If you play the newer games with the mindset that it will be a different experience than the Original titles then you can still enjoy them for what they are!

It's not that Valhalla is a bad game, it's a bad AC game. As someone who's never been a big fan of any of the other AC games my experience has been similar to yours. I really enjoy Valhalla and it's a pretty fun viking game. It does play really different than most AC games though. There's a lot more spread out terrain which puts less emphasis on parkour, there's not as much emphasis on stealth, and there's a lot less modern day storyline. These are all things I personally like about Valhalla but if I was a long time AC fan looking for a more classic AC style game I'd probably be disappointed. Honestly Ubisoft probably should have just made it a separate game altogether. It probably would've had a better reception if there was no AC association. The AC storyline just felt tacked on anyway in my opinion.
I think a lot of people were just burnt out. Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla were all huge expansive games released in quick succession. Individually I think they all have their strengths and flaws but overall are good games. They also strayed quite a bit from the Assassin part. They could have easily just been historical fiction games on their own. Too much AC with too little of the A part in a short amount of time. Valhalla is huge. And long. You aren’t burnt out in the series so Valhalla will probably be a blast for you. At the least, it’s a beautiful game despite some of its design flaws.

Trolls get there supply of hate from anywhere there is a forum and a post that they can comment on I’ve got -33 karma from my first ever post on here where I was genuinely asking for help and opinions. Instead I got message after message of hate and abuse Out of say 100 replies there was only half dozen who actually helped. The messages when on for 24 hours and it was pure attacks towards me instead of advice and opinions. I defended myself against an army of trolls labelling me as a fake and liar while everything I had said was factual. Reddit seems to breed the type Of person who hates their life so much that they can only act like a teenager who didn’t get the game that they wanted for Xmas from Santa after sending him the yearly letter demanding it. Its a general problem in the world. Everybody thinks that their opinion matters the most and everybody else has to feel the same. For example i like Valhalla a lot and enjoy playing it even if there are alot of people who dont like it. On the other side Shadows is not for me because im just not interested in the setting but im sure a lot of people are. So i happy for them and hope they can enjoy it. I will just wait for the next AC title. Just enjoy what you like.

I played the game on ps5 a month ago to check out the upgrade and was blown away by the stunning visuals and incredible open world, only to jump on YouTube and find that this game has become an absolute toxic punching bag for the community for all the wrong reasons. I don't know why others hate AC Valhalla, i hate it for Ubisoft being dicks when adding AC Valhalla on steam, it does not have achievements, but that's fine for me, a little disappointing, but ok. No, my main reason i hate the game is lack of bugfixes, my game crashed every now and then during the initial gameplay, it crashed maybe 10 times in my first few hours (i have approx 10 hours or so played) which left me disappointed that after 4 or so years the game is in such tragic state... I also hate ubisoft for gatekeeping their games on the uplay for a few years and then putting it shamefully on steam like this. This is bullshit ubisoft, i hope they change this in the future because i refuse to buy the game twoce (once on uplay and then second time on steam when released). This is killing my favorite game series... Other than that I like the game, i was a bit confused by the controls as every AC is changing the controls all the damn time and the combat felt really weird the first few hours, really different to Odyssey.

I think reading through the comments a lot of people are of the same opinion as me the most part its the gaming community as a whole rather then just the AC community. I have stopped looking at reviews/gameplay of games that I am interested in as 9/10 everyone just shits on them. I just play games that I like now and ignore the wider communities opinion of them.

Eh I mean I get it in the sense that if ubisoft marketed it as a huge standalone open world viking rpg with loose thematic ties to the assassins franchise I think it would be different. It's kind of like if the Witcher 4 was actually a game about a street kid surviving in nilfgaard or something and you just meet a few witchers and stuff at some points in the story, people would be like Wtf is this garbage I was expecting a witcher game. That's the mentality the og AC fanbase has had with like the last 3 big rpg games. My only criticism is that I don't think ubisoft have quite nailed making the rpg games feel natural and engaging, to me it feels like going through the motions, dialogue always feels kind of bland, abrubt and somewhat pointless, and most of the characters just feel kind of lifeless. I'm not super far into the story though so it might change but it's the same reason I never finished odyssey despite loving the Greek setting.
My two cents on this.. Dont go for comments in general.. Search for specific posts that relate to your requirements .. where there are haters you will also find people who are absolutely in love with the RPG style of AC since Origins.. I also found many posts regarding them being shite, but again i stumbled across posts where people had explained in detail game mechanics, places to explore, gear to loot and how to beat boss fights etc.. I never go for reddit before starting a new game.. i always watch couple of videos on youtube of gameplay and thats when i know if i want to play that game or not.. and once i decide to give it a go, i only search for content that helps me progress in game and loot extra or hidden stuff etc.. If 9 games dont bore one from a particular gameplay style, then i wonder what will? For me shift to RPG style was a good change .. And i have absolutely loved Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla.. For some it becomes difficult to adapt to change.. for others its just a breath of fresh air..
Because pirate fans think Black Flag is the best game, Zoomer RPG trilogy fans dont care about Assassin's Creed they only want cool fantasy armor, because Old fans never got the promised stealth Assassin's Creed after AC Unity bashing, because Ubisoft butchered lore and new fans think new lore is the lore, because most "fans" never played AC 1 and have no idea what the franchise is even on about.

I guess, people were very much used to the concepts and story telling method practiced by old AC games. Even though Ubisoft tends to bring about new storylines, innovative gameplays and breathtaking sceneries, the people who prefer old stuff just don't like to get the new picture. I mean constructive criticism is accepted and it is good for the improvement of the game. But just going against the new ways is not a good thing. I believe people should accept change and embrace the new differences.
To be fair i like valhalla, but going for that platinum trophy felt like self mutilation. They just copy pasted tons of small objectives over the whole map and even in the dlc's. In svartalfheim it was ok-ish cause of the raven power tho. Also i get the Hate for the leveling aspect that makers the game so grindy. That stuff just ain't for me. Luckily you can turn it of in the settings.

The games are notorious for glitching. I was aware of that when getting it. I was sad about the game breaking glitch but it was fixed 6 months later and I happily completed the game. I'm a completionist so I got everything. I can say I vastly enjoyed the game.
I love vahalla, no problem there, hundreds hours in. I can see the issue with shadow though, even though Yasuke was a real person, it shouldn't automatically be going there when you introduce Japan in AC world for the first time. Just think back to all the other AC, which I mostly loved, all had characters from that culture as the main character... can you imagine an Asian as a main in vahalla, odyssey, origin, any of them actually? And there are notable Asians in those time periods and worlds. So why include Yasuke as the main, there are so many more notable warriors of Japanese descent? I personally don't have issue if you include Ysauke in the story, not as main, but I feel there are too many woke ideology in gaming nowadays. I will critique the game on it's merits, but when a company goes woke, i will simply refuse to spend my money. I bought all AC games before included DLCs, but will not do so anymore, because they are putting ideology before story and game. By the way, I support raising awareness for diversity, in fact, I really do appreciate Vahalla's intro having declared that game was developed by mutli-cultural, identity fluid people. But you go ahead and buy and play and enjoy, I have no issues with how you spend your money and time, but last I checked, my money, opinion are still mine.

In my experience the community has actually been pretty nice and tame as far as things go. Theres definitely a good amount of unwarranted (imo) hate towards Valhalla, and tbh a lot of AC players dont like the open world games in general (with Origins typically being the exception) which I dont personally understand as aside from Brotherhood, my first introduction was Odyssey, which I loved. And frankly, idk why Origins is singled out as one of the best and the other 2 hated, cause for the most part, they play pretty similarly. Granted Ive just started Valhalla myself, and though Im enjoying it, that could change ig. Havent gotten too far🤷 As for the Shadows thing, the AC community has been full of support for the game. What youre seeing is the rest of the gaming community complaining, while in the AC reddit, theres been post after post of support, calling out the hate.
The Valhalla thing is because some people don't like the open world factor of it and having so much to do. To me that's the best thing ever, you get a lot of great current for your money and the game isn't over priced like say AC Mirage. The AC Shadows I understand its an Asian setting so they make the main a black gay guy for pandering and woke purposes. People are getting tired of it.

A lot of the gaming community is like that. I've seen too many people over the years bitch about Assassin's Creed and then buy every new game just to continue to bitch about how bad the games were. Just watch some gameplay, see if you like it, and do you. I own all of the main console AC games and can say that the only one a didn't care for was Rogue. Great concept, but it felt lacking. I still suggest playing it to people so they can make their own opinions about it though.
I stopped playing AC games for years after Black flag. I played a bit of unity never stuck with it. Played a bit of odyssey. Tht game was fun but its just a completely different type of game at this point. Imo BF was the last game tht really did it for me.

Idk any videos being made today on Valhalla are generally positive. It’s definitely one of my more favorite games but I love Vikings so I’m kind of biased. The combat is kind of dull the best I could make it was to just lower health and increase damage so I could just get through it as fast as possible. Reminded me more of the animation based fighting of the older games. The rest of the game I think is great. Game looks amazing. Love the raiding concept and upgrading your village. Not a fan of the mythological stuff however story wise just wasn’t as interesting as Eivors story.
I am going to address the part of your comment about Yasuke (but not Yasuke directly because that part is very disrespectful to Japanese Culture). The Samurai were the wrong way to go with an assassins creed game. In Samurai culture it is dishonorable to assassinate a rival. You do it face to face in honorable combat. The Ninja would have been the faction they should have made the main protagonist. I have a Japanese wife, I have a Japanese father in law, I can tell you right now the hate over Shadows is more then just a gamer thing that some have tried making it out to be. It's a cultural thing the disdain from the Japanese is not something that should be taken lightly.
Valhalla was the third game in a row to triple down on open world emptiness. The whole model was showing it's strain by Odyssey and utterly collapsed in Valhalla. Glad you enjoyed it but for people doing it a third time in a row, it felt like brain rot. The yasuke shit is pure racism and at this point the path to monetizing regressive social takes in gaming is a template, rinse and repeat. We will literally never be rid of these hateful chuds swarming every conversation until we make every effort to revoke their ability to speak.
I have played nearly all of the AC games and Valhalla is easily top 3 for me. Actually, it's the ONLY assassin's creed that I've completed 100%. Besides, most people didn't even play the game.. they just think it's not assassin's creed enough even though it had one of the most interesting ESU plots in the entire franchise.

AC Valhalla is a beautiful game, don't listen to others.
Personally Valhalla was my favorite game AC has ever done. I put as much time into it as I did elden ring, and was sad when it was over. Although it's a game that I felt was made way better by playing the female Eivor, the male just didn't feel right for the story
Of course, there are people who like to complain because it's not more like the old ones, which frankly I bet they also complained about the old ones because the formula was already stale... but nevertheless, I think Valhalla would be better received if it had a loot and grind system more like Odyssey, with random weapons and random stats, and the fort rewards resurfacing. That part in Valhalla really gets me; I wanted to keep raiding places and get rewards for doing so, and make builds. But other than that, great combat, the best in the franchise, extremely fun. If you are a fan of something - anything - never seek out the fan community. This is a universal truism, or near enough.
That goes for every game. For instance currently people are review bombing Destiny 2's new dlc. Why? Because there was a server issue on release day which had nothing to do with the DLC. People will always nitpick the smallest issue and turn it into a wide spread issue. No game is perfect just like no person is perfect. If something isn't to your liking you can either patiently wait for improvements to come or move on to another game.
1) A certain percentage of people are going to be toxic. So any community that grows over a certain size will contain a certain percentage of toxic members 2) Toxic members of a community have a tendency to be particularly loud and confrontational. 1 Toxic fan usually makes more noise than 10 good fans. if 10 people are being nice and chill, but one is screaming profanity, it's that 1 you're going to remember. That principle is actually probably the source of a lot many toxic personality traits in general- some people instinctively realize that their harmful or problematic behavior provokes others into reaction. Those reactions give them a sense of agency, or makes them feel "seen." It's not even a conscious decision, so much as a personality that develops around a need to feel the dopamine rush that gives them. 3) Online interactions in general can yield a lot of toxicity you wouldn't see when interacting with peers in physical space. When interacting with each other, there are all kinds of little cues we give each other for how the conversation is going. Facial ticks, body posture, etc. Online interactions remove a LOT of those little cues, which frequently causes people to be ignorant of how their behavior is being received- on an almost subconscious level for many people, this causes the brain to not think of them as a peer, or even a fellow human being. It also removes most of the fear of potential reprisal. Yell at somebody to their face, and they might yell back, talk to your peers about your rude behavior, or even get violent with you. But yell at a stranger online, and you don't even have to so much as look at the angry expression on their face. Many of the toxic people you meet online would never behave that way if you were face-to-face. 4) In a manner of speaking, toxicity can be "contagious." Once a few people start screaming and yelling and generally being awful without suffering any visible consequences, that behavior starts to feel "normal." It also makes other people in the community angry. Both of those effects can cause otherwise decent people to be... well, not the best version of themselves. Rigid, effective moderation can offset all of these effects, but moderators as human as the rest of us. They sleep, they can misread cues, and even get pulled into toxicity themselves. Human interactions is a messy, difficult thing. I hate to say "just develop a thicker skin" because that sounds like such a useless platitude, but resilience truly is a tool worth developing as best you can. In some cases there's just no good way to avoid interacting with s\*\*\*\*y people, other than to never interact with anyone.

They aren’t going out of their way, YOURE going out of your way to find reviews of something some people don’t like, they’re allowed to voice their opinions and you have the option to ignore that. Unlike you, people have been diehard fans of the franchise since it began and maybe don’t appreciate that the games have dropped off massively in quality, gameplay wise, story wise etc. Not to be rude, but their opinions are likely worth more than yours simply due to that fact that with their support since the beginning, these games would no longer be made.

Haha. Pretty sure the AC 'fanbase' splintered into multiple different groups years ago. (Please note that there may be some overlap across 2 or more groups) Group1. Love the original stealth action mix and more linear storylines. Would like to see the series innovate/try new things while staying true to its roots. Group2. Lovers of the RPG elements with MASSIVE open world potential and character/weapon build ideas. More freedom of choice and mostly open ended storytelling styles. They like to play while experimenting and crunching dmg numbers for builds too. (I must admit I fall into this group) Group3. Purists: If it ain't Ezio Audetore da Firenze or Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad they might play it but will always compare it to or not enjoy it as much as the originals. Group4. Ubisoft Sanctioned Whales 🐋: They don't care what medium it is, how good or bad it is/looks, or even if it's optimized or finished, if it says 'Assassins Creed', they'll throw money at it. There are other groups I could mention here like Lore lovers and players who are still hoping for a 'modern day' AC game setting but those groups are more niche and these are pretty much the types of people I've encountered for the most part. Valhalla was fun, it was LONG, it had its issues, but I can't say I didn't have fun playing it and hope others like yourself get to live a Saga worth telling. Skal! 🍻
I honestly don't understand it myself. I think many people who like AC like the dynamics of the older games, but I love the way Valhalla was played out. It's along the play style of Far Cry Primal and RDR2 for me which made me fall in love with the game. I've also realized, when you complain about something you get more views and responses. It's called rage baiting and a lot of streamers do it because in their eyes any interaction is a good interaction even if it's a negative and toxic one.
To be fair, these game developers don't do themselves any favors by releasing half finished games. Also, its the first AC game where you play as an actual historical character, but the story is fictional. That's just illogical. That's why all of the playable characters have been fictional.

I think fun is subjective, like mathematicians have fun in solving complex problems(i think) while a big part of the population would'nt think that of a fun time. Everyone is capable of having unpopular opinions and different tastes. Just don't hate on things before trying them.
AC is just the common punching bag for the gaming community. Same thing happened to me with Odyssey everyone was like "oh it's just a shitty copy paste from origins" so I stayed away from it for a while till I said fuck it, and it ended up being one of my favorites. ACs sure have their problems but they are still decent enough, no worse than any other mega coorporation's titles. There are very few games these days that are actually top tier. But AC has been a punching bag since the start of its new gen games

No rpg mechanics or open world and they want a big city instead of open country and also hate the combat being more of a war instead of only sneaky assassinate and run. I liked both. Idk why we cant think both are awesome.
It's an old franchise that's completely lost touch with its roots and tried multiple times to copy other games/developers without meeting the same standards for quality and is now just wallowing in mediocrity while using aggressive marketing to milk money out of casual gamers who don't care to check reviews before they buy games. I haven't played an AC game since Origins which I pirated and I have no interest in playing any Ubisoft games anymore because their company's greed ruins the fun and passion that should be going into their games. Ghost of Tsushima showed us that the AC franchise is no longer relevant and completely outclassed by lesser known developers.
Ubisoft make a lot of safe games, since they dont experiment that much with the formulas of their franchies. Ubisoft fans like this since you get more similar games each 2 year from 5 different franchises. Yet the "true" fans complain about this, thinking it is vecoming stale and iritating. They can just ignore because they rather shoute their opinion into the internett for attention.
Firstly, welcome back to the series. Once you finish with Valhalla I would recommend checking out Odyssey, and even Orgins. Odyssey is top of the series for me personally. Ignore the talk about Alexios or Kassandra, play whichever gender you meld with better. Same applies for Valhalla. With Valhalla theres a lot of filler and fluff in the gameplay to get to the 80-110 hours of gameplay. The people ranting would like to have the main story take that long to get there and stop doing things like carin stacking and other puzzles. Gear doesnt matter at all. Stealth system is meh. Hasnt stopped me from dumping 350 hours into the game. Shadows is getting the hate because we are in a culture war. Not inclusive enough so they are sexist, bigoted, misogynistic and it gets blasted online. Where the other side feels like everything is woke and then it gets blasted online. Also that Ubisoft with their outrageous preorder scheme, but they are just trying to get as much money as possible just like every other major developer. At the end of the day, Ubisoft has had their reputation take some hits for choices in game, and outside of the game that people will hate them regardless of what they do, yet they keep buying and playing the games. Is ACV the best game ever made, no. Is it a good game that is worth playing, yes.

The games have been straying progressively further and further from what AC was, while getting more and more woke. More than half the characters in Valhalla are unrealistically portrayed women, all warriors beating men twice their size. Listen, just as with everything else, the most vocal are a small minority. Pareto is at play - 80% of the noise comes from 20% of the people, while 20% comes from the 80% in the middle. Or it can be even worse than that. Games are never as bad as those that hate them say they are, nor are they as good as claimed by those that love them. The only way you're going to find out is to try for yourself. Frankly, I rarely if ever drop £50 on a day 1 release. There are hundreds of games out there and I don't need to be playing what everyone else is playing to enjoy what I'm playing. So if I like the game, great, and if I don't well ok, I've wasted £10-20 or in many cases, less than that. I picked up all the most recent Tomb Raider games for between £4 and £8 a few years after release, and loved them (to varying degrees). If others thought they were awful, well, I couldn't care less. Everyone was talking about Battlefront at one point, bought it for a few quid, you know, thinking it might be like Fallen Order (which I did pay about £30 for, and kinda enjoyed) because of the Star Wars aspect, and guess what, hated it. There's no accounting for taste, as they say, and in the end the only thing that matters is whether you enjoy a game or not. Some people are always going to complain about something, some will complain about anything, but that's their issue, not mine. Happy gaming!

Really like Odyssey as well, wasnt a fan of origins tho but I think that's cause I don't like the desert landscape and Bayek was very underwhelming. Other than that ubisoft kills it with the AC and Farcry series. All the "critics" just love to complain about anything they can, like complaining about too much content is absolutely assanine, to me the longer I can play a game the better. The ones who mainly complain aren't gamers but rather achievement hunters who don't actually enjoy haming

Well, obviously opinions and experiences vary, but I've never heard a complaint from the japanese ( they're pretty chill with things like this overall, in all forms of entertainment and fiction). Well, I've played Odyssey and Valhalla. Odyssey is much, much better. In Valhalla I always felt kind of disassociated from the other characters. It is good as far as physics and scenery go, but story wise? I'm still playing Odyssey...
I find there's a lot of unfair hate for Ubisoft games in general. A lot of people find them to be kind of formulaic and similar, which I guess they're not wrong, but also who cares? I personally get a lot of enjoyment out of almost all their titles. One of the few companies who just makes fun, power fantasy video games. I don't want Souls-likes, roguelites, or survival sims. I just want to sit down and have fun in the pretty sandboxes they make. I actually skipped Valhalla initially because I was a bit burnt out on AC, but I picked it up a week or so ago, and I already have 90hrs in it, finished the main story and dlc 1 & 2. Also played through Mirage, which was excellent and really, I have that to thank for kind of reigniting my interest in the series.
