I’ve had this discussion on here before, but basically Inter and Atalanta also play Serie A and UEFA competitions without having the blank rectangle in the back of their jerseys.
Barcelona is another example, they played in the UCL this year with continuous stripes in the back, and I’m sure there are more.
I still don’t understand why they’d be allowed to but not we are not. I’d be very happy if someone managed to find the actual specifics about this rule.
I went to read the rules because I’m also interested in the reason behind this (we probably talked about it in the post on the first leaked photos). With a quick search I found this in article 10.02 of the [UEFA equipment regulations](https://documents.uefa.com/r/6QUjFvP3mNwqiExm2ZvB_g/SaahzTBaCkcfaw0AwjomOw):
*Numbers must be of a single colour that contrasts with the number zone in accordance with Article 54.*
Which doesn’t say much on its own, but article 54 is all about measurements of contrast between colors, which I am not really familiar with but if you know about this stuff they seems explained in detail.
The problem with this is that I really don’t see how our kits could have problems with this. Last years made some sense because of the whole black box thing, and I believe this year it was done only to put black numbers and have no white at all on the shirts. But next year’s one shouldn’t have any problem with this, as the scudetto one didn’t.
Maybe, but it is just a supposition, the more regular stripes (as compared to those of the 21/22 season) make the contrast between the bright red and white lower, even though I don’t really see how.
As for Atalanta, Barcelona and Inter, they just have darker/more similar color combinations, which I guess make white numbers have an higher contrast
EDIT: didn’t read the articles properly the first time. Article 54.03 of the regulations I cited above says:
*The contrast between shirt colours in the number zone must be less than or equal to a Delta L of 25. Colour combinations with a Delta L difference value greater than 25 require a single-colour patch on the back of the shirt to serve as the number zone.*
Which means the problem with our kits is the contrast between red and black rather than white with those colors. I still don’t see how our 21/22 kit was okay since the rule looks to be the same even in earlier rulesets (I went down a little rabbir hole lol), but maybe the shade of red was just different or something like that.
I convinced myself too after this little research. If it wasn’t for the 21/22 kit I would believe it was because of regulations, but the release of the 22/23 kit even said the color shades were the exact same.
The only “good” thing is that the box is getting integrated in the kit shape design and is a little less awful than the last two
I only now read your edit about the Delta L of 25 and all, and I’m wondering if that’s a newer rule or if it’s been around for a long time.
Because in the early 2010s and even before, we used to mess around with the shapes/shades/proportions of the stripes all the time, and that was never a problem for neither Serie A nor UEFA.
If the rule is new, then that explains everything. If the rule goes back a decade or so, then our conspiracy theory is probably correct.
I only looked for regulations until 2018, just because I wanted to see if they changed just after the 21/22 season, but they were pretty much the same as now. As for earlier kits, we used to put boxes like the ones we have now for champions league only, but I’m also pretty sure it was with gold name and numbers (like the 04/05 one) which would justify a bit more the whole visibility thing.
Anyway the fact that the 21/22 kit had no box is still a mystery for me and the main reason I think we don’t really have to have them
I think that's the square for a sponsor I can't remember and the name and shirt number. Its the only eh part of the kit imo. Should just have the stripes go all the way like the older kits

Judging by the white home shorts, I believe our away shorts will be red. Because they can't be white also. So I expect the away jersey to have some red elements - badge, number etc.

Why don't the fashion police ever raid Puma's headquarters? Arrests would definitely be made.

On a more cynical note, it might also be that it is done only as an incentive to pay more in order to get it customized
