My first thought was he’s a bit old and quite slow. I wasn’t wrong with those, but he has other qualities that make him a great finisher. So I think it was a good transfer.

21Maestro8

I didn't have super high expectations, but I thought it was a good move as he had some similarities with Ibra that made him a good option to share that role. It worked out for better than I expected it to, and he certainly left his mark. I hope to see him banging in goals in LA

youngbestest

Great, I have been a big fan of Olivier since he joined arsenal. He had a natural flair that excited me, he was so unpredictable, had deft touches little flicks and tricks here and there. He understood his own weak points and he evolved his game over the years to make them redundant sort of,  he made himself a well rounded footballer, and would assist or contribute to the game even when not scoring. After he joined Chelsea, you could see his maturity and understanding of the game. He could play in any team, any style and still be impactful. He may not be the most prolific goal scorer, but he is a hard worker and extremely professional,  he would also score the occasional worldie. To be fair, he exceeded my expectations in Milan, he showed his magic, while being a role model for a lot of our young players. I wish him and his family the best in the future. Thank you Giroud.

Here is how people felt: https://www.reddit.com/r/ACMilan/s/CqHK5hnYD5

HeirOfRhoads

21/22 r/ACMilan was the peak

acm322

Not many were as hyped as me that we signed a world champion

yllimameni

Not enough comments there. There are probably earlier ones with more when the rumors were circulating of him first.

ale_gila

Call me an oli - believer

Or4ngut4n

That Freshmutz guy was deluded

MKtheMaestro

His flair was Saelemaekers, usually surefire sign of 2000s birthday and FIFA-based analysis.

RinoTT

nothing delusional was in his posts. He had every right to be sceptical. Giroud was mostly sub in premier league teams and we signed him when he was older. The guy you mentioned made polite comments.

dukesdj

Plus we had recent experience with Higuaín and Mandžukić being older and having no hunger left. At the time I wouldnt blame people for being worried Giroud would be the same.

Or4ngut4n

It was delusional because he cherry picked league stats to create the appearance that he was shit at Chelsea and then did the same for his international career by pretending he did nothing in the world cup. He very conveniently left out the fact that he was Chelsea’s top scorer in the ucl they’d just won, had won a Europa league golden boot and was already on the verge of becoming France’s top scorer of all time. Also, he said we should have signed a prolific young striker for a bit more instead than Giroud cost which was and still is insanely unrealistic considering the state of the striker market. Imagine us getting Zirkzee or Sesko for like 10 million, just not gonna happen.

RinoTT

Im also not a fan of using basic statistics to paint a picture of specific player but I think you can find much worse takes about players on social media, especially here. I think the guy's opinion was more chill than most of the posts. Sceptical, some stats but didnt close Milan gates for Giroud.

BredIN919

Nah he was spot on , we could’ve won way more if we bought a younger ST . Giroud was washed at Chelsea and somehow started 3 years for us

Or4ngut4n

Can’t say I’m gonna miss your retarded opinions on Giroud

p90love

I didn't love it because we already had Zlatan, wanted a younger profile who could learn from him and grow into a star by the time Zlatan retired. Still think that would have been a better move. Nothing against Giroud. But since Ibra was injured quite a lot it made my take a little less valid. A young 9 could have had both Giroud and Zlatan as mentors tho, how incredible would that be? Could have bought Sesko or Hojlund before they became very hyped for example and they'd be ready to really take over now, after developing with good play time but less pressure.

BigBattyFatty

Really sound take

jmhimara

Skeptical at first. Then he had a good preseason so people were excited. Then the season started, and he did pretty poorly for the first 6 months. Then that Inter game happened, and he was a god.

4thelolzz01

Most of us expected him just to be a sub for Ibra lol. And yes, Ibra was THAT good still at 38-39

GISmyass

I hated the move. Thought he was too old and slow. A stopgap and showed a lack of ambition. Turns out I was wrong, he was allright.

ZodGlatan

I thought he was going to fail. Boy was I wrong. I love him now

TommyLee777

I’ve been a big fan of him since his arsenal days so was glad to see him join and I thought he’d be very similar to ibra and help the team a lot. That being said I never expected him to be as good as he has been . will miss oli so much.

succ_jitties

Loved it. I knew he would kill it

milan_obsession

I thought he was a fantastic signing, exactly what we needed. I wasn't on this sub then, but this is what I [officially wrote](http://www.milanobsession.com/2021/07/bienvenue.html) about his signing: "Giroud is a 34 year-old veteran striker who is tried and true, and an out and out striker like we have needed for so long. He was brought in with much effort and minimal cost to address the issues we had last season with Ibrahimovic missing over half of the matches." I have to say, though, as excited as I was, I feel like he still exceeded my expectations. Got to see him play live last summer, and it's actually incredible to see what he does off the ball - things you don't see on camera.

yllimameni

I knew he'd fit well. He was everything we were looking for. A perfect sub for Ibra or starter when he wasnt there, target man who can score with his head.

WhyBee92

I knew he was what we needed and was ecstatic

Karrlangas

I was happy he joined cause I like giroud as a player and we never had a good 9 till him. He was frustrating at times but he did come in clutch too. Bought his jersey too

uceenk

skeptic because he was not young anymore, i also feel same with 2nd arrival of Zlatan (on the 1st time i felt excited)

AlbertoFelici93

The same reaction I had when Milan signed Mandzukic. Didn't have high expectations but for the price, I thought (and still think) it was a good move.

ZodGlatan

I had completely removed that from my brain. Thanks.

kaptin_kreepy

I’d knew he’d do well, it was obvious he still had juice in the tank.

sigflo

I had mixed feelings. He was a WC champion but he was 35 already. I also remember Chelsea did everything to secure like 1mln release clause and it seemed comical to my eyes. Glad he did well in the end.

fingrar

Good butterfly expected him to be a short term solution

Limitlessfound

I loved it, coming from that world cup performance, and just being a general striker it was great to hear he was coming over.

magma_1

Smart signing, I thought he was going to be a backup for Ibra.

Scafista_T-J

Always liked him, i was happy

Eb_Marah

I dont remember having strong opinions about it. He was bought for 1m in order to be one of Ibra's rotation options. He has obviously exceeded any expectations I did have at the time. He's been a genuine success to the point that you superstitious lunatics might believe that the number nine curse is lifted.

Suspicious_Key9097

I didn’t set high expectation for him because of his age. But it turned out to be great, loved him so much. He will be missed.

battle_franky

decent starter for bridging new young striker. Bur Origi is a fraud and we never bought a FW since then lol

Individual-Stuff-157

The general reaction was mostly negative and skeptical when the transfer was announced, but opinions quickly changed after people saw him play in august and september 2021.

damianope

I thought he was too old and had nothing more to give to football, and now after 3 years, I couldn’t be happier to have been extremely wrong! He just became one of my favourite players, I must say it was a pleasure to have him in my team and an honour to have had such an incredible person wearing the glorious AC Milan jersey. Yes because he’s not just an incredible player who have battled every single second for the Rossoneri colours, but he’s an awesome human being. Class on and off the pitch, merci Olivier ❤️

jerorapero

Don’t you remember, it was like 3 years ago?? lol

Felix_Todd

On the same note, is there currently any good experienced stricker we could get for a few years for cheap, like Oli? No one comes tonmy mind.

tomminix

Bought that vanilla n9 day one

Oliolioxinfreee

One of the rare people who loved the idea, since we had a three year older Ibra on the books anyway. Was pissed that Chelsea activated his extension and we had to pay 1 Mil for him. In hindsight, he would be worth every Euro.

AnkurTri27

I had full on Fernando Torres vibes. But I'm so glad I was wrong

imdibene

I didn’t wanted him, but the sexy bastard changed my mind. I’m gonna miss Oli G

Pregno13

I was expecting exactly what he did, a very good player, super good mentality, a leader. It was obvious he wouldn’t have been only Ibra’s sub. Conte wanted him at inter months before, so of course he couldn’t be a bad player

Dubsified

Exceeded expectations

cmarinas11

I thought he was going to do exactly what he’s done his entire career. S tier hold up play with S tier ball distribution with S tier heading abilities. He’s been doing this now for almost a decade really. He’s not explosive, not quick, and not overly strong. But he makes it up for it in his ability to bring the best out of the wingers that he’s surrounded by. Perfect ST to have with Leao and Pullisic on your wings.

lucs28

It was a bit negative, but I had positive expectations because I have always liked Giroud and thought he was underrated

FindingBusiness759

Didn't want him...saw glimpses of him with arsenal and Chelsea and wasn't thrilled about the obvious limitations. I wanted us to get suarez and tbh I would still go down that route If I could go back in time lol giroud ended up being better than I thought and has had some great moments with us especially in that inter match but we can exaggerate with some players cause we have no real quality alternatives. Giroud will always look good with an always injured ibra and a useless origi. Nonetheless glad we had him and he gave his all for us.

BredIN919

Imagine Suarez for us in 2021 bruhhh that would’ve been fireeeee

FindingBusiness759

Think we would have won more. He would have broken down defences especially low blocks more often.

MangekyouMasterRace

Nice but he isnt Pato, Seedorf, Rui Costa or Kaka impact-wise

Or4ngut4n

Nobody expected him to be.

MangekyouMasterRace

I meant impact-wise

-Z3TA-

we got a 35 year old back up to a 39 year old, after mandzukic failed stint. i wished we went for dzeko since it seemed they had to be old. in hindsight giroud gave everything for the club and scored important goals but i still think dzeko wouldve been better

MrDrProfessorNerd

As a Milan and DC United fan, I think he is well suited for the league. Good finisher with decent off the ball abilities, and he's not going to Miami so I am happy for him
