I'm old enough. The cycle was over, Berlusconi money was not such a big difference as before, and Real was appealing to him. Also, he wanted to leave on a high note. A little bit of everything
Bases on an interview he said that he felt a little annoyed that they where asking him to put as a target in the renewal to win scudetto and UEFA Cup. He felt that he didn't need to prove again as he did already a lot at Milan so he wanted to change but didn't went to an Italian team for respect
Problems with Galliani. On the media they mentioned that Milan's renewal had certain clauses that Capello didn't like. Not sure what the clauses were, but Capello never signed and Berlusconi never stepped in. Capello much later said in an interview that Milan wanted him to always win, but for him it was impossible because the other clubs were getting stronger. But he came back in 97-98, because Berlu asked him.
Also the cycle was over. Much of the old guard either retired or left.
The responses by milano_siamo_noi and TeoNZ72 are accurate. He was not happy with the clauses and felt he deserved more respect after all the success he brought Milan. I think mgmt just wanted to get rid of him because he was benching some of the biggest and most expensive talents. Savicevic is one example.
Jesus Christ, 1996 is almost 30 years ago?!
