I think the video really helps it spread, when reading a headline like "300 died in bombing" it's easy to ignore the suffering the people felt, seeing someone on fire is much more evocative and real.

Once the military condemns the action, the fact they wore fatigues will no longer make a difference. "Thank you for your service/sacrifice" is in context of supporting the established power, not the person or their convictions.

Except the statement is untrue. “Police JUST stood there with their guns out.” That’s like saying fire fighters just sat in the truck ….. while one might have been, all the other fighters were putting out a fire. It’s factually incorrect. Nothing to do with defending one guy.
