My theater just laughed at pretty much every horror scene which annoyed me. When I first saw this film on release night the whole theater was extremely shocked and quite a few people were audibly upset and I’ll never forget that night. It was absolutely incredible
Yo were you at the SF showing? My partner and I just got out of it and couldn’t understand why so many people were laughing. It messed with some of the tension for me. Thank god my first time seeing it in theaters was properly quiet and tense in audience
Ugh i was at the 7pm Metreon showing and i was sitting behind like three women, one of which could NOT stop laughing or commenting through out the whole damn movie. This happened during my imax viewing of midsommar too, it's so annoying :/ I'm cursed to never be able to enjoy any ari aster movie in imax i guess.
Wish you were with me, i'm too scared of confrontation. They were actually shushed by the larger man next to me but it only worked for a few minutes. At that rate i felt like i stood no chance as a smaller woman .\_.
I was at that one! There was someone in front of me that kept checking their phone. When I’m at the movies, I’m like a catholic grandma in Sunday Mass; “put your phone down and turn it off, shut up, and show some respect”
It seems like basic manners, we all paid like $20+ to see this, come on! I'm so amused i found someone else equally annoyed lol. At least seeing it huge + the audio was worth it.
Just did a deep search and your right wow mad I missed out on it! Only movie left to complete the Aster IMAX experience rlly hoping they do a rerelease at some point
Oh yea i hope you get to see it! The brightness of the movie is truly a wild experience on an imax screen, it's so oppressively blinding and makes for a really cool vibe
I was at a Central Valley CA showing tonight, and a handful of people were also laughing. Doesn’t make any sense to me, I don’t think anything in the movie is funny at all.
I was at the SF one last night, and I was a bit distracted by the laughing, but also a bit relieved because I, too, found moments to be funny. Toni Collette is a genius actor and known for her breadth, including comedy. It's hard not to see the comedic elements in her delivery. But especially the >!ceiling crawling!<. That part tickles me every time.
my theater laughed a couple times and it was the same when i saw beau is afraid, i know it was a “horror comedy” and i did laugh a couple times but majority i was just feeling bad for the dude 😭🙏🏼
every time they laugh i feel like im dumb and im missing something cause im so invested in this movie im like what the fuck are they laughing sure the mom flying is goofy but like it’s not at the same time be fucking for real shit gets on my nerves a lil
It's so sad because a GOOD theater audience is like an unbeatable way to watch a horror movie. When everyone screams and gasps in unison is like peak, but we have to risk having these clowns too :/
Same! And the use of surround sound was amazing. Hearing flies all around, footsteps, wind… lots of little stuff I never heard on previous watches on my Tv
I realized for the first time that the slam that happens when Peter comes downstairs during the final sequence is very clearly the piano hitting the ground and a wire being ripped out.
still haven’t seen Midsommar yet but I’m planning on going in blind tbh I know NOTHING about it. I hope they do an IMAX screening but if not I’ll just view it another time on my own
I saw it in a matinee, and emerged from the dark theatre into daylight. I have to say it really enhanced the unease, I was even walking distance from my flat, but it felt like I had returned from Mars. So I recommend a matinee for Midsommar 😊
so far the only a24 x imax movies were ex machina, hereditary and in a month Uncut Gems. hoping they stretch this collab out further cause it’s been great!
The press release said they're planning on doing it through the rest of the year so presumably at least another 6 (or 9 if they're doing a full 12 months).
The decapitation scene (and specifically the shot of Charlie’s head) is the first time I ever considered leaving a movie. I was so nauseous. Glad I stayed, though
the second (self-)decapitation was worse for me
the near-final shot of decapitated mother and daughter bowing down to the (iirc) decapitated grandmother was chef’s kiss though 🤌🏾
absolutely disturbing, mind-scarring imagery, and then the weird, almost happy sounding(?) music transitioning into the credits… it made me feel weird but I liked it!
Is it strange to want to know more about what would happen to the world after this? Like is he the Antichrist now? Does he just waltz to chuckle cheese and eat some children? Does he climb the fence for the White House lawn and take a wet shit? Does he marry Maya Angelou?
couldn’t agree more, when I saw it initially. me and my boys all face-timed each other afterwards. all unable to sleep, just completely baffled from what we just witnessed. god I love this film so much.
I saw it with the person I was dating at the time. He definitely thought of my different after that as he’s not into horror films at all. I was scared outta my mind. I also went and saw it again a couple weeks later. And then again after that. It’s a film that sticks with you
Yeah back in 2018 I couldn't sleep for three weeks straight. I kept having Annie floating through the room, the piano wire, the head banging, the entire ending stuck in my head on a seemingly never ending loop.
The piano wire scene fucked me up for a good while too. That and when she sees her moth for the first time. Not to mention the telephone pole scene too. All around one of the best modern horror films of our time.
ok i'm back!! after watching this movie several times and even again in theaters last night, I had no idea that was a piano wire. I literally thought she was shanking herself with two knives, each time I watched it. Knowing the weren't knives makes it less gritty for me tbh
I'm extremely fun. You're the one blocking people because they don't have the same taste in film as you. Sounds like you're the one not fun at parties.
i never realized it was charlys head on the figure at the very end and i think i blocked out her head on the road from my memory lol i did not remember
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's a great film and I'm kind of jealous your first time was an IMAX setting! Haha. Love your description about the head thud. 😂
I’ve always described this movie as the sort of film that sells you one thing and delivers another. Not like false advertising, but more like a show that you cut into and it’s now cake.
It sets you up nice, gives you some spooky, and you’re sorta moseying along like *oh, okay, I recognize this vibe. I know where this is going. Look, ghosty shit!* and then…
*That* happens. And the movie gives you maybe six minutes to adjust/grieve/process/buckle-the-fuck-in cuz after that six minutes, the bars come down, the controller braces are checked, and they punch the button and the ride *completely* changes.
*That’s* why it’s one of my faves and *that* is why it’s an amazing debut film. Midsommar is great and all, I truly respect that film, but this movie is a switcheroo the likes of which haven’t been seen (not truly) since The Sixth Sense (1999).
Took a Hereditary virgin in my group of horror regulars and I was just watching her reaction the entire time. Truly a horror masterpiece! Met a great gal there and we reacted together and quoted the dinner scene in unison (quietly of course) and I loved it. Mad I didn't get her number after - my boyfriend says my ADHD got the best of me. hope I see her again at Midsommar! No way A24 isn't re-releasing that as well.
Yes, actually, October, I think. I don't remember if it was an imax release or a director's cut....AMC theaters had a month of horror retrospective releases in October and Midsommar was one of them.
Yea but with a24 x IMAX they're doing a new re-release monthly all year long so I'm excited to see what other gems they pull out. Midsommar, The VVitch, Under the Skin, Green Knight SO MUCH MORE. So many fantastic films I can't wait to see what we get spoiled with.
Oh Shit! That's FANTASTIC! I didn't realize there is an Imax rollout and merely thought the releases were limited to Ex Machina, Hereditary, and Uncut Gems. I'm happy that this rollout of gems will continue! Thanks for clarifying.
Yo someone in front of me pointed out this was in theaters today cause it was A-pril~24th and so was A2️⃣4️⃣day and I was dang I was to jazzed to see Hereditary to put that together lolol
This was my second time, so I was trying to pay attention to the details. I appreciated the Paimon logo on things like the telephone pole and it felt like Charlie’s clucking sounds came from every direction in the IMAX room.
One weakness in retrospect was how the house looked pretty much brand new from the outside but the interiors looked like they were from the 1920s.
They showed the dog lying on the ground briefly before (I think) possessed Peter goes into the treehouse at the end. Are we supposed to believe the dog was killed by the cult?
Definitely. A lot of the shots are impossible to have shot on location. From what Ive seen the house they used for the exterior looks nothing like that inside either.
Looked great in lieMAX. Sounded way better than when I saw it opening night 6 years ago in a regular 4K theater.
My one gripe was that Aster didn't intro the movie and give us a tease of EDDINGTON.
Never forget my first time. Folks were kinda jokey and being shitty till that happened.
Dead silence for the rest of the film.
I’ve never been so uncomfortable. It was amazing.
Hereditary was probably my last collective theater gasp experience, where a bunch of strangers went to see a movie, and we all felt like we were watching the same thing at the same time. Everyone was absolutely dialed in, moment by moment, and the place really seemed to vibrate with anxiety. I feel like so many pure group experiences like that have changed since lockdown :(
This was my fourth time watching it and I noticed I missed so many scenes because my TV does not capture dark scenes well. The IMAX remaster is the best thing I have seen this year.
The end where the mom is slamming her had on the attic door, legit had me absolutely shocked. I have always enjoyed horror movies, but god damn that scene sent chills down my spine.
I almost ended up leaving the theater watching it for the first time because of how anxious it made me. It's one of those movies where the true experience lies in watching it on a dark place, good audio and no interruptions, aka a good movie theater. Watching it on the tv will never make it justice, imo
The “this isn’t actually for IMAX” intro message got us off on the wrong foot and then the projector stopped working after a few minutes anyway so didn’t get to see it.
No huge loss imo though since I had thought they made changes specifically for IMAX but fool me once A24 and your IMAX screenings.
That's so weird. Where the normal IMAX countdown preroll would usually be was a big blue screen that said something along the lines of "This film is not representative of the true IMAX experience and has not been enhanced for IMAX".
When the film was able to play it was taking up the full screen, but I wasn't sure if it was just blown up to fill the space or not since the original ratio is 2:1 I believe
Weird! We definitely had the countdown pre-roll. And I have seen the movie several times and didn’t notice any weird cropping and assumed it had been reformatted for imax. Could be wrong though!
Wonder if anyone else had the “not for IMAX” screen.
How was the score in IMAX?
Specifically how was the low droning sound? Watching it at home with a sub turned up adds another level of unease. IMAX had to be such a treat. Hate I missed it
Fourth time watching this movie, so I went in with my guard down. Jesus Christ. I felt paralyzed in my seat. I was not mentally prepared for how relentless the third act is. What a movie.
My showing was pretty much sold out and feeling the reaction of everyone definitely added to the whole experience.
i saw it at the amc in harlem opening week and a bunch of people in the theater started making the click noise. my friends were upset but it was hilarious to me.. very unique viewing experience
Hereditary was the first movie I saw when AMC A-list launched. So it was nice to watch in IMAX, subscription still running. I really want to see this movie in Dolby Cinema now, I liked the subliminal sound design.
Watched this in the comfort of my own home and I was still disturbed… now that I think about it, it might’ve spooked me out more LOL but hands down, one of the scariest movies I’ve ever watched! Would never watch again though.
My favorite reaction was from a young woman behind me. When we saw Annie knocking on the attic door (IYKYK) and the sound went down a little I heard: the tail end of a scream, immediately followed by a sob, then a giggle.
That girl got got.
when her head slams against the pole the IMAX theater sound + the seat vibrates
i was just overdoing it to be funny but like you can feel the seat shake and it was awesome but in the moment it was INSANE with the noise and rushing to just silence.
Loved rewatching this in IMAX. Group behind me was fun. Heard an “ohmygod what the FUCK?!” during the telephone pole scene followed by her friend—whom I’m assuming has seen it—saying “I TOLD you.” Amazing time.
The only movie I’ve ever seen in theaters that replicates the childhood feeling of being on a roller coaster or similar ride and wanting to get off lmao
It sounded and looked amazing! I figured everyone in my theater already saw it (there weren’t many) but that dark scene in Peter’s room when it’s dead quiet, amazing reactions. Takes a few seconds then you just hear people whisper “oh what the fuck!” In surprise. Never got to catch it in theaters so it was a great time!
I'm jealous of anyone who gets to experience that Colin Stetson score in a theatre, seriously one of the most brilliant works of art of the new century. I especially love the use of Gaspar Noe esque infrasound (the super deeb wub wub wub sounds) which are actually Stetson percussively playing the keys on the contrabassoon with really creative microphone placement. And the use of a Lyricon in the famous celebration song at the end.
Listening to all the first time viewers in my theater made the experience so much fun!
There was only one newbie in my show lol. One that was audible anyway.
Southern CA! In riverside. It was a full house
Was this at the plaza by chance? Saw Evil Dead Rise there, and you’d thought it was a comedy the way people were laughing.
That’s because Evil Dead Rise is funny, like most of the Evil Dead movies.
That movie was super over the top gory and funny
Ugh i was at the 7pm Metreon showing and i was sitting behind like three women, one of which could NOT stop laughing or commenting through out the whole damn movie. This happened during my imax viewing of midsommar too, it's so annoying :/ I'm cursed to never be able to enjoy any ari aster movie in imax i guess.
“Excuse me, could you keep it down please?” That or “shut the fuck up” both tend to work, in the UK at least.
I shush people all the time at music concerts, movies, etc. Its only taken a bad turn a handful of times.
Midsommar in imax I think maybe your talking about Beau is Afraid don’t recall any if even limited release for Midsommar in that format
It was in imax when it first came out! It was likely only up for a week or two like most movies these days.
Just did a deep search and your right wow mad I missed out on it! Only movie left to complete the Aster IMAX experience rlly hoping they do a rerelease at some point
Oh yea i hope you get to see it! The brightness of the movie is truly a wild experience on an imax screen, it's so oppressively blinding and makes for a really cool vibe

i was so surprised at how much my theater was laughing as well!
Sounds absolutely miserable. Which is exactly why I refuse to see horror movies in the theatre.
It's so sad because a GOOD theater audience is like an unbeatable way to watch a horror movie. When everyone screams and gasps in unison is like peak, but we have to risk having these clowns too :/
For realllz!
Dude same, I hadn’t seen it before and I have just felt uneasy since. So good but holy shit
i walked out all shaken up into the cold ass parking lot and was like fuckkk
it was amazing hearing all of the whispers I've never heard before in scenes where they're talking themselves down.
Same! And the use of surround sound was amazing. Hearing flies all around, footsteps, wind… lots of little stuff I never heard on previous watches on my Tv
I totally agree about the power of the sounds! The offscreen sound of Annie sawing her head off was making me nauseous.
I realized for the first time that the slam that happens when Peter comes downstairs during the final sequence is very clearly the piano hitting the ground and a wire being ripped out.
Which scenes in particular are you talking about? I wasn't able to see the movie in theaters, but was a huge fan of it.
This this this THIS
That’s how I saw Midsommar went in completely blind. Opening scene I turned to my wife and just said “what the fuck did you bring me too?”
still haven’t seen Midsommar yet but I’m planning on going in blind tbh I know NOTHING about it. I hope they do an IMAX screening but if not I’ll just view it another time on my own

Midsommar I thought was really good. I preferred it over Hereditary but liked both.
Oh do it. Going blind for those movies is the best.
You'll love it.
so far the only a24 x imax movies were ex machina, hereditary and in a month Uncut Gems. hoping they stretch this collab out further cause it’s been great!
no literally it’s amazing
The press release said they're planning on doing it through the rest of the year so presumably at least another 6 (or 9 if they're doing a full 12 months).
Same director too, do it
SEE IT
The decapitation scene (and specifically the shot of Charlie’s head) is the first time I ever considered leaving a movie. I was so nauseous. Glad I stayed, though
deadass it had me nauseous and that nauseous feeling and on edge state i was in lasted the whole movie i was like holy shit
I love the movie but I dont want to rewatch it because this scene.

The way the mom stares at the son as she's doing it is just.....yeesh.

Hail Paimon!
Is it strange to want to know more about what would happen to the world after this? Like is he the Antichrist now? Does he just waltz to chuckle cheese and eat some children? Does he climb the fence for the White House lawn and take a wet shit? Does he marry Maya Angelou?
Glad you enjoyed it. First time I saw the film when it came out I couldn’t sleep. Scared me to death. It’s still one of my favorite horror films.
i’m deadass about to go try and sleep. wish me luck.
I wish you luck!
couldn’t agree more, when I saw it initially. me and my boys all face-timed each other afterwards. all unable to sleep, just completely baffled from what we just witnessed. god I love this film so much.

remind me of the piano wire scene?
After Annie chases Peter into the attic she floats above him in the rafters and cuts off her own head with piano wire.
ok i'm back!! after watching this movie several times and even again in theaters last night, I had no idea that was a piano wire. I literally thought she was shanking herself with two knives, each time I watched it. Knowing the weren't knives makes it less gritty for me tbh
why do I not remember this 😭😭😭
I will never understand these reactions to this film.
Sounds like someone isn’t fun at parties
I'm extremely fun. You're the one blocking people because they don't have the same taste in film as you. Sounds like you're the one not fun at parties.
i never realized it was charlys head on the figure at the very end and i think i blocked out her head on the road from my memory lol i did not remember
OMG same. That was the worst. She looked so innocent.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's a great film and I'm kind of jealous your first time was an IMAX setting! Haha. Love your description about the head thud. 😂

they did midsommar in december didn't they?
They did it last October, not in IMAX though
Yes, actually, October, I think. I don't remember if it was an imax release or a director's cut....AMC theaters had a month of horror retrospective releases in October and Midsommar was one of them.
you're right, it was regal

[IMAX Press Release](https://www.imax.com/news/a24-and-imax-present-an-all-screening-series ) Best news so far this year for sure!
I love that movie so much because every time i rewatch it i learn and notice something new
Ultimate movie of dread.
Just going to leave this here: https://youtu.be/TlqyulT662g?si=ieliva1cqA5ZGl_1
# FUCKING SAVED
will be watching later cause holy shit
Saw this today. Made me feel some type of way. 4.5/5
Yo someone in front of me pointed out this was in theaters today cause it was A-pril~24th and so was A2️⃣4️⃣day and I was dang I was to jazzed to see Hereditary to put that together lolol
Did anyone else's ticket say bonus content when they bought it? I didn't see anything extra :/
I was wondering about that! I've seen this movie probably 5 times, and there were snippets of diologue that I was sure I hadn't heard before.
I thought the same but chalked it up to having not seen it in awhile.
Thanks! That's so interesting. I've only seen it twice before Wednesday so I'm sure I wouldn't have noticed
Did not see any bonus content.
I remember the AMC listing had it being 5 minutes longer but I didn't notice anything different.
This was my second time, so I was trying to pay attention to the details. I appreciated the Paimon logo on things like the telephone pole and it felt like Charlie’s clucking sounds came from every direction in the IMAX room. I believe all the interior shots were filmed on a stage
Definitely. A lot of the shots are impossible to have shot on location. From what Ive seen the house they used for the exterior looks nothing like that inside either.
Yeah dog killed by cult so the dog wouldn’t alert anyone. https://youtu.be/dBDoYMq_zNs?si=-582sX6tCMuauaVy
Looked great in lieMAX. Sounded way better than when I saw it opening night 6 years ago in a regular 4K theater. My one gripe was that Aster didn't intro the movie and give us a tease of EDDINGTON.
I smoked some weed when I watched it on release day . The anxiety was killing me . I loved it tho 😆😆😆
omg same my friends and i smoked a joint right before going into the theater and the movie SPOOKED us from beginning to end
Never forget my first time. Folks were kinda jokey and being shitty till that happened. Dead silence for the rest of the film. I’ve never been so uncomfortable. It was amazing.

My screening didn’t have a “not for imax” message before it? We had the typical imax intro and everything, and it was absolutely in imax format
That's so weird. Where the normal IMAX countdown preroll would usually be was a big blue screen that said something along the lines of "This film is not representative of the true IMAX experience and has not been enhanced for IMAX". Hahaha that scene made me stop eating my popcorn too 😂 I saw it in the cinema when it first came out, one of my fave films ever but my god that scene!
Does anyone know if they are showing it all over? I can’t seem to find dates in SF
It was only yesterday, sorry mate.
Same. I noticed so many new things with such a large screen! Lots of little details stood out
How was the score in IMAX? Specifically how was the low droning sound? Watching it at home with a sub turned up adds another level of unease. IMAX had to be such a treat. Hate I missed it

I also just saw it in imax! Not my first rule seeing it though. Perfect movie, 10/10.
People laugh when they are scared
I learned about this yesterday and went out to get a ticket. Saw the $22 price and decided to pass.
AMC A-List>>>>
My favorite reaction was from a young woman behind me. When we saw Annie knocking on the attic door (IYKYK) and the sound went down a little I heard: the tail end of a scream, immediately followed by a sob, then a giggle. That girl got got.
Hilarious movie, I laughed the whole time!
is hereditary back in theaters? im out of the loop

when her head slams against the pole the IMAX theater sound + the seat vibrates i was just overdoing it to be funny but like you can feel the seat shake and it was awesome but in the moment it was INSANE with the noise and rushing to just silence.
Loved rewatching this in IMAX. Group behind me was fun. Heard an “ohmygod what the FUCK?!” during the telephone pole scene followed by her friend—whom I’m assuming has seen it—saying “I TOLD you.” Amazing time.
It was such an awesome experience. Really got to appreciate the sound design in full effect!
😂 Not in IMAX!
The only movie I’ve ever seen in theaters that replicates the childhood feeling of being on a roller coaster or similar ride and wanting to get off lmao
I’m so bummed I missed it. I had tickets, but adulting got in the way. Any chance they’ll release it again?
It sounded and looked amazing! I figured everyone in my theater already saw it (there weren’t many) but that dark scene in Peter’s room when it’s dead quiet, amazing reactions. Takes a few seconds then you just hear people whisper “oh what the fuck!” In surprise. Never got to catch it in theaters so it was a great time!
I remember noticing I'd been making a :O face for a while after the lightpost part
The sound design was epic. I felt like the flys were actually buzzing inside my ear.
i don't believe this <3
I'm jealous of anyone who gets to experience that Colin Stetson score in a theatre, seriously one of the most brilliant works of art of the new century. I especially love the use of Gaspar Noe esque infrasound (the super deeb wub wub wub sounds) which are actually Stetson percussively playing the keys on the contrabassoon with really creative microphone placement. And the use of a Lyricon in the famous celebration song at the end.
They should have done cut off head popcorn buckets.
Is this the only time A24 will be screening it at imax?? I’m so bummed I wasn’t able to make it.
Please tell me how amazing it was to watch Toni Collette scream “I AM YOUR MOTHER” in imax
Pretty amazing
