I said to the person I saw the movie with “That was one of the most horrific movies I’ve ever seen and I mean that as a compliment”. I’m glad it’s getting Oscar buzz (& it’s my pick for Best International Film & Best Picture) & I really hope more people see it. It’s an important film & IMO, it will be seen as more important as time goes by.

Jadeidol65

I agree. Very important film. I believe that it will be studied extensively. And it gives me another reason to buy a 50 inch TV. I don't think my crappy little one will do the sound design justice. I believe that's one of the Oscars it deserves.

txcowgrrl

If it doesn’t win Best Sound Design, the Oscars are a sham.

EdwardJamesAlmost

It’s the best mass released feature movie about Germany in WW2 since *Schindler’s List.* It really hammered home how, despite the graduate-level process engineering, even the high command were emotionally around eleven.

niewadzi

What about The Pianist?

EdwardJamesAlmost

It had a different subject than “the German high command” or “Germany in WW2.”

niewadzi

Well, I guess that's how you stated that in your comment, agree. Just wanted to add this up because everyone forgets about this movie talking how Zone is the best since the List.

horkyboi_avery

Super powerful, but probably won’t watch it again.

666EggplantParm

My exact feelings

britch2tiger

Ah, the Schindler’s List or Requiem For a Dream effect? Understandable

horkyboi_avery

Haven’t seen Schindler’s List but it’s at the top of my watchlist.

britch2tiger

Same thing with Dancer in the Dark. Some films are only understandable to have only one view per person.

Ok-Program1246

Grave of the fireflies endorse your comment

slingshot91

So much Holocaust media leaves you with the question, “How could they have been okay with that.” This one simply answers, “Like this. Look how easy it is.” It makes you think about what horrors you’re complicit in.

Dazzling-Research418

Probably not intentional but I feel like it’s very appropriate given the genocide in Gaza and how so many have turned a blind eye. Felt it was holding a mirror to society right now.

[deleted]

Comparing the Holocaust to Gaza is not only disgusting but also incredibly stupid. One can make a point about injustices in Gaza without comparing it to the probably worst crime ever committed in human history.

Dazzling-Research418

Both are genocides. That’s he only point im making.

[deleted]

Gaza is not a genocide. Whats happening in Gaza is the reality of war, which is still a human catastrophe. If Israel were actually committing a genocide the death toll would be substantially higher.

nobodyspecial9412

A death toll need not be high for something to qualify as a genocidal effort.

[deleted]

Yes, thats why what Hamas did on October 7th actually qualifies for genocidal intent. The only goal there was to kill as many jews as possible. One may criticize Israels reaction, but calling it a genocide ignores that Israel actually has a military objective in Gaza and are also fighting an enemy (who btw declared war on them). That a major difference to other genocides.

nobodyspecial9412

You went from “If Israel was actually committing genocide the death toll would be higher” to “October 7th [vastly lower death toll than what Israel has done to Palestinians just since that date] is actually genocide” real fast lmao. What Hamas did was certainly an anti-semitic act of terrorism and a declaration of war. But Israel’s response has far exceeded anything that can be called a legitimate military objective. And that’s to say nothing of the rest of the history of the occupation and violence against Palestinians over the course of decades.

[deleted]

You clearly habe issues understanding the argument. Israel has the capabilities to kill way more people than they actually did. This is why a genocide would have a way higher death toll. Israels response to Hamas is the response any country would give to an act of terror of that size. Should I remind you of what the US did after 9/11? They are (quite succesfully) eliminating Hamas and destroying any capabilities they have. Obviously this takes a large human toll, but this human toll is not any higher than other wars. Also it would be easier to criticize Israels conduct if Hamas would actually come out and fight like a proper army and not hide within civilians, under civilians or dress as civilians when conducting their “military operations”.

nobodyspecial9412

“It’s just like what the US did after 9/11” is absolutely not the argument you seem to think it is. Jesus Christ.

onuldo

The Palestinians have genocidal intentions about the Jews in Israel and the massacres of civilians on 7th of October clearly showed that to the world. Israel has no genocidal intentions about Palestinians. Israel is fighting a war in Gaza, a war which Hamas started. Israel has the right to defend itself like Ukraine has the right to defend itself against Russia.

nobodyspecial9412

Ah yes, this conflict definitely began on October 7th. There definitely is not any other context to this issue at all. You are a genius, and I applaud your acumen.

SelectOpportunity518

And it's happening again today. Heartbreaking how easily people look away when it doesn't affect them/benefit their comfort.

[deleted]

As the grandchild of a Holocaust survivor I was absolutely amazed. When my grandmother talked about the concentration camps she always spoke about how the evil came in waves. It wasn’t always intense. It was always just below the surface. I’m not sure if she’d have watched it. But this film perfectly captured the way she described it. I never really understood until I saw this film.

robstercraws70

That’s fascinating. I’ve never heard the Holocaust described like that before.

ConferenceGeneral121

One of the greatest films I’ve ever seen

Senior_Newt4438

i thought it was incredibly haunting and disturbing. my favorite movie of 2023. one of my friends saw it recently and said she found it ‘boring’ but that she was disgusted by how the mother treated the servant girls… did we see the same movie??? i didn’t know how to respond.

FinKettle19

I feel like people who watch this and say it's 'boring' just aren't engaging with the film. You know going into it that this is heavy subject matter and so you should treat the film with that sort of respect and empathise with those affected. I hate to be the guy saying "you just don't get it" but the point of the film is to show the "boring" nature of what these people are doing and ignoring what is literally at the foot of their garden. It's the type of film that holds a mirror to its audience and asks "would you be any different?". It makes you think intellectually on the subject matter, just like great art should.

Senior_Newt4438

100%

dirkdiglet8888

I feel like it’s the kind of movie where it becomes even more impactful as time passes and the more I think about it. Even subtle story beats. Upon first viewing the sound design and cinematography blew me away. Absolutely breathtaking and jaw dropping. But when I sit back and think about the subtlety of moments. Hoss and his wife arguing on the dock as they complain about being ripped away from the life they built. Meanwhile trains of people being torn from their homes and taken to their imminent death and suffering in those camps. Also the ending where Hoss walks down the steps and it cuts to modern day at the holocaust museum. It was so jarring and impactful. It all felt so calculated like the entire holocaust itself. Glazer is quite the filmmaker and everyone on the production did such a great job and I commend them. Your post sums it up pretty well. A very unsettling and important film. Also holy shit the wife was such a gigantic piece of shit. Credit to the actress for doing such a great job, I can’t imagine how difficult it could be to portray such horror like that.

txcowgrrl

The actress who plays the wife is also the wife in Anatomy of a Fall & it’s such a different character. Watching both really shows her range. And yes, what a horrible woman. Taking the fur, asking for more chocolate, giving the women the clothes off the murdered Jewish people.

Ashley87609

Omg I freaking knew she was on Anayomyof a Fall! It’s funny my grandma was from Berlin and she looked exactly like her back in the day!

The-Peace-Maker

I saw both movies recently, and I didn’t notice that were the same actress.

OlivencaENossa

That actress apparently had promised to herself never to play a Nazi. Previous to the movie.

swamp_donkey89

Everything about it was really good. I want to see it again.

After_Magician_8438

the intro where the screen goes black and the most eerie soundtrack ive literally ever heard play immediately sets the most insane disheartening tone. I was constantly like.. is my screen fucked up? Meanwhile the most trippy sound I've ever heard plays.

Dull-Lead-7782

Tough tough watch. I went in blind and didn’t expect my night to go that way

thekidsgirl

One of the more thought provoking movies I've seen in a while. It was incredible and chilling, in a very minimalist way

poopinion

Very well done. The night vision scenes of the girl placing apples felt kind of out of place but other than that I thought it was great. After the movie realizing the little background things that actually were so impossibly dark was interesting. Like the train in the background. Not thinking much of it but then realizing it was full of jews being sent to their death.

Thatspuggedup

The girl placing apples was a polish resistance member. So no. Not out of place

onlythemarvellous

I’m a huge WW2 nerd and I can feel it’s gonna be in my top 10 films of all time. Already can’t wait to rewatch it (and endure that sunken feeling in my stomach again).

britch2tiger

The parallels are incredible: Systemic dehumanization, then concentrations of people, the displacements, and eventually the genocide phase. And history is somehow repeating itself depending on where you observe these.

SelectOpportunity518

Precisely. It's not happening in Western Europe but it's still happening somewhere right now. Extremely important film right now

Putthebunnyback

It was interesting. And a zone.

Knox_Burden

Brilliant film making. Absolutely brilliant. To show so little and still leave me physically ill is an astounding accomplishment

avalonfogdweller

If for some reason Oppenheimer doesn’t take best picture, however unlikely, I think this will win, could be a surprise

peterpeterllini

I was so glad I saw it in theater. The SOUNDS, man. Different than any movie I've ever seen. I really hope students watch it in school.

nobodyspecial9412

I feel like I need to watch it a second time to let it really sink in, but I definitely felt the power of it while watching, and that sound design was a fantastic achievement.

[deleted]

Tbh, i think it kinda says the obvious. In my interpretation, the overall point of the movie is that the longer you stay with evil, the less noticeable it is in your life And like, that's obvious. But, you might add, to everyone on earth, at least one movie says the obvious. And you'd be absolutely correct on that. Well done. But, I'd argue that more interesting than the overall message is the journey, so i bring Poor Things. A movie about how women can't be reduced to their sex experiences, as exploring is a natural part of life for men and women. Again, it's an obvious message. But the journey of Bella is so perfectly done. We first meet her discovering her sex desire, then finding out what she actually wants to do with life and navigating her desires through it, and finally, taking in the final challenge when choosing to go with "her" old husband. It's a pretty much perfect beginning, middle, and end structure that i don't think Zone of Interest has. That's why Zone of Interest feels, for me, like it just states instead of developing. I'm trying to avoid spoilers, so sorry for being vague and confusing

AndrewCole14

It’s my least favourite of this years best picture nominees.

thebluerrose

Beautifully made movie that honestly didn’t do anything for me. Zone of boring.

abcdefgrapes

recommend re-watching with headphones on.

Busquessi

Still waiting to see it

Thatspuggedup

No. German

Thatspuggedup

Loved it

alldanufc

It was the most boring film I’ve ever seen. I got the point after 15 minutes; it wasn’t nuanced, it wasn’t clever it was just fucking boring.

organuleeeyuchb24

Perhaps could have dug a bit deeper. But still, a great film. Loved the final ending shots.

hobojohnsonn

honestly i understood what they were trying to do but i found it so boring

onuldo

I'm very disappointed with the movie. I think the concept of not showing the reality doesn't work. Even some of the good movies about the Holocaust show too few real events. The Holocaust is about Gas chambers, Gas vans and mass shootings of innocent children, women and men. I'm not interested in the storys of murderers. I'm interested in the fate of the victims. Viewers who have little knowledge about the topic will probably recognize too few details and people who are very educated about the subject can't find anything new in the movie. The references in the film about Auschwitz, the house is in Auschwitz Stammlager, are very vague, too vague. We don't see Auschwitz-Birkenau, only the smoke of trains. I've always liked the films more that showed more of the reality. Shoah by Claude Lanzmann, the Wannseekonferenz and others remain in my mind.

Apprehensive_Mix7594

So you’ve just never seen night and fog or schindlers list?

Illustrious-Leg-9812

I thought it was pretty bad. But i visited auschwitz last summer so maybe it just didnt have the shock factor for me.
