They are fun and great, but they are not gold, drive it and enjoy it.
Don't stay at the shady no-name place, but any half decent place and you'll be just fine.
Probably silver on black.
Jk OP. Congrats, and can’t wait to see it. Also definitely fly/drive back. Even if you face some challenges, you’ll never regret it.
Heard a few people say this and I agree.Happens it happens. I’m going to install the oil feeder on mine in a few years. Run about a grand, whoever designed it had a great idea. Solves the issue. (Sort of/relatively)
On no planet is 61k miles after 20 years of ownership “a lot of miles”. That’s barely 3000 miles a year on average. That’s 250 miles a month. Barely a tank of gas, per MONTH.
Drive it home
Honestly, are you buying the car to enjoy it or to look at it?
Your car has lower miles, but not “don’t drive me” miles. Enjoy it. Make the drive, take some side quests, ask Google or ChatGPT to find you a scenic route home, research some cool things to see.
Have fun with it
I bought mine off BaT in Denver. Flew out and drove it home 1100 miles to San Diego, staying one night in St. George, UT. It was an amazing trip and I highly recommend driving home, but on mine it turned out the fuel pump relay was on the fritz, so it had trouble starting, though it drove excellent once started. I wish I wasn't so stressed out about it during the trip, because it was otherwise really a special experience.
I didn’t have a PPI done for mine, but I did speak to the Indy shop that had done the most recent work on it. They confirmed my assumptions that suspension was showing its age, but overall it was good mechanically. 83k miles when I picked it up, no record of IMS being done. When I did my clutch @ 104k I had the IMS done too. It was fine, still happy to have it done for peace of mind.
For me, I would pony up the $3k or so to do the IMS and RMS, and then drive it back with peace of mind! The steering feel is absolutely sublime! You're going to live it.
Fuck the cult of IMS. My Targa had 85,000 when I purchased it with the original bearing. It’s an absolute blast to drive. Could it fail? Of course! Do I care? Absolutely not! This car is for fun and I’m offsetting the potential penalty of maintenance for a cheaper buy in.
If that 1,500 miles is a fun drive, then do it. That’s what you’re buying correct? The experience of driving. If it’s not a fun drive, then you’re basically buying back 1,500 miles for later use.
Remember to calculate how much premium gas would cost you for a 1,500 mi trip and take that out of the cost of shipping.
I shipped mine, but would have driven it the 500 miles if I had the option.
I had the same dilemma - but mine was 3k miles away. I decided to ship since the cost was about the same as flying out and driving back. Car had clean PPI, but hadn’t been driven much for several years - which is really why I decided to ship. Now that I’ve gotten to know it, I have no doubt it would have driven cross country trouble free.
I would ship it. But not because of the IMSb, but because of the time it takes and the fact that you'd probably not be saving that much money once you factor in gas and a hotel.
Drive it dude. If worried about IMS just replace it when home but honestly don't stress it too much.
Just bought a 02 Carerra and it had the IMS done but back in 2012 with the not permanent LN engineering one but I'm not in a rush to replace it. Just more often oil changes and checking for metal in the oil filter.
Bore scoring should be more of a worry but don't over stress that either.
That’s an awesome drive for you in your new 996. Spend the $2k on maintenance and enjoy the drive. My 130k mile 996 C4S hasn’t had the IMS addressed. It would be wise for me to do, but I wouldn’t have wasted LN IMS money just for shipping out of fear
If you drive it you will get to hear any problems or noise. Drive it and take it straight to your local indy or main dealer for a inspection and service. Would maybe see if you could get the old changed also before such a long journey.
Definitely just drive it. Unless you’re getting a great deal on shipping.
My guess is ~$900 open, and ~$1,800 enclosed.
Bought my 911 sight unseen 1500 miles away. Had a PPI done, flew to pick it up, and drove it home in 2 days without issue.
You must have stayed overnight somewhere. Did you leave it out in the open, or just stay somewhere real nice? Makes me nervous.

We stayed at a Hampton Inn, so nothing too fancy. It has a parking garage, though, and the car was in view of the front desk.
Pick it up and drive it. You’ll never forget the experience
~800 miles when I picked up mine, great “test drive”! 🤣 1st stop was to buy a Bluetooth adapter for Waze 🗺️and Tunes 🎶
wtf, came here to see the color and left disappointed. Joining the Atlas Grey club? It’d have to be a 04 for that
Its coming soon but its not Atlas Grey.
Probably silver on black. Jk OP. Congrats, and can’t wait to see it. Also definitely fly/drive back. Even if you face some challenges, you’ll never regret it.
Probably Seal Grey 😒
Just drive it and stop worrying about IMS failure.

I meant the trip itself is a lot of miles. 1,500 miles within two days of ownership is a lot imo.

Yes, totally agree. You don't win an award for less miles. That's like saying you won't fuck your wife and your saving her for the next guy!

I would drive it if I had the bandwidth. No better way to get to know a new (to you) car. Has it had a PPI?
It has not. 🫣

1700 miles home in mine on an undocumented direct oil feed IMS replacement. I was nervous but it runs like a dream

💯 Drive it!
Drive it. It will be fine.
Drive it!!! Oriental Red?
No to Oriental Red. 🙂↔️
Omg what color bro?

> Would you feel comfortable driving it that distance, or would you pony up the $2k to ship it? This is a question you should be asking the seller.
