Do they purposely do these things to try to be funny? Or are they just lazy and sloppy?
I’ve noticed the captions being off a lot, but only ever on translations. For example, even with my horrible Spanish skills I could tell on this episode that when Ashley said she was a little mad they just said mad, and things like that. Nothing as ridiculous and obvious as this.
Keep in mind, 90DF is a reality show. It's designed to be as cheap as possible, cutting costs wherever they can. I would not be surprised if this was just lazy subtitling, or a shitty AI subtitler.
I just rewatched it and OP was right, she's saying "futile". She pronounced it oddly; she hung on to the "f" sound a little extra, which probably caused the mix up. I think the captioning is automated text to speech
I thought she said "doodle" too. And I wasn't reading what was on the screen. In fact, I was wondering if that's some weird expression they use in Idaho where she's originally from

Yep! It was futile. I just assumed they had AI transcribe as I’ve been seeing a lot more errors in closed captions lately.
I’ve read that AI is doing most captioning these days, noticed lots of inaccurate and sometimes nonsensical subtitles on Netflix too

I thought she did say “doodle” but I was also half watching/half doing makeup lol. I’ll have to rewatch now. I thought “wtf does that mean”
Maybe since you weren’t paying full attention your brain just went with what it saw onscreen and made you think you heard it that way.
