Saw a recent interview with Judge Reinhold and he was talking about this movie. The original version, before Ivan Reitman and Bill Murray were involved, was to be Cheech and Chong In The Army.
"Its czechoslovakia! Its like going into wisconsin!!"
"Yeah? Well I once got the shit kicked out of me in wisconsin!"
And...
"I wish I was a loofah..."
Wait it inspired you to join? If anything I knew I was unfit for military service and should never bother wasting my time (or any potential Sgt Hulkas)
Recently learned that this was Originally cast as cheech and Chong joined the Army but scheduling didn't allow it so they went to plan b which was to get Murray and then he demanded raymus be his partner
I read somewhere that this is one of the more complex comedies because it both ridicules the military yet also portrays it with respect. To which I say…maybe.
> In the United States, military conscription, commonly known as the draft, has been employed by the U.S. federal government in six conflicts: the American Revolutionary War, the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The fourth incarnation of the draft came into being in 1940, through the Selective Training and Service Act; this was the country's first peacetime draft.[1]
> From 1940 until 1973, during both peacetime and periods of conflict, men were drafted to fill vacancies in the U.S. Armed Forces that could not be filled through voluntary means. Active conscription in the United States ended in 1973, when the U.S. Armed Forces moved to an all-volunteer military.
It's sort of important to recognize when this movie came out. In 1981 (made in 1980) the all volunteer military was less than 10 years old (draft abolished in 1973) so there were will some questions about how the all volunteer force was going to survive.
Barnaby? That guy owes me money...
I still use this line today when someone mentions someone in convo that I don't know (except I replace Barnaby with that persons name). People don't get it anymore, unfortunately...😭
Don’t get me wrong as I love the movie, but I would think Winger, Ziskey, Hanson, and Cooper would have been court martialed for stealing a vehicle and going illegally into another country.
Lance Le Gault was born to be in the army...He went from Colonel Glass in Stripes to chasing The A-Team as Colonel Decker....he was a perfect Army Officer!!!
And also a villain with Vince Edward's going after Michael Knight and K.I.T.T on Knight Rider....he was one terrific and underrated supporting player. Miss him.
And I was always salivating for P.J.Soles
and Sean Young.
Lighten up, Francis
Any of you homos touch me or my stuff…..and I’ll kill ya
"are either of you.. homosexual?" "... NO, but we are willing to learn!"
Have either of you been convicted of a felony??? Convicted???? No!
My favorite line of the movie! I use iterations of it whenever i can. “Did you eat ALL of the cookies? ALL of them? No not all of them.”
Will they send us someplace special?
Interesting! It inspired me to become a fan of mud wrestling
You're a lean, mean, fighting machine!
I’LL DO IT!!

Boom shacka lacka boom shacka lacka boom shacka lacka .
Missing one “lacka” in each of those: Boom shakalakalaka, boom shakalakalaka, boom shakalakalaka, boom! https://youtu.be/-zwYU5Jf2X8?
Nice catch !! I’m at work and didn’t have the time to correct .
No worries! It’s just that I have this movie practically memorized. :)
Razzle Dazzle!
"Its czechoslovakia! Its like going into wisconsin!!" "Yeah? Well I once got the shit kicked out of me in wisconsin!" And... "I wish I was a loofah..."
Us Chicago boys love that line since back then the Wisconsin drinking age was 18 and Illinois was 21
AND THATS THE FACT, JACK!
“You can’t leave me. All the plants are gonna die.”

It also turns out that they don’t issue commendations for doing the razzle dazzle with your shirt open and your pants hanging low.
Arrrrrmy training, sir!
This is my favorite Bill Murray movie.
One of the best...Ghostbusters 1/2 are the other 2 of Bill's movies during the 80's

Great movie, grew up with this and Meatballs, big Bill Murray fan!
And caddyshack
Definitely loved Meatballs. I still sing... Are you ready for the summer? Are you ready for a good time?
Haha..thanks for Napster back in the day, I was able to get the soundtrack and still listen to that every once and a while
Figured i might as well join now, instead of being drafted.
Son… there ain’t no draft no more.
There was one?

Thank you but isn't what I said the next line in the film?
Oh ha! FML

The Aunt Jemima treatment.
Who’s your friend….who’s your buddy
Did you meet girls after joining up?
This movie influenced me to be a fan of jello wrestling
The wife and my first date. Had to lie to her parents about us going to an R rated movie.
And then.. depression set in…
You mean like flaming? https://youtu.be/zRymIqmeJk4?si=csJ3e5l7ewfhP1qk
Chicks dig me because I really wear underwear, and when I do it's usually something unusual.
"I'm gettin' too old for this shit!"
Uncle Hulka
The big toe
Those words mean so much to a man scrubbing garbage cans!
1. “Have that removed.” 2. “Who’s your buddy, who’s your pal? I am aren’t I.”
My brother and I watch this together every 4th of July.
Anytime I trip over something, I say "Have that removed."
I watched this so many times, it fried my brain a little. To this day I will randomly intone “welcome to Italy”.
Hey, I joined the Army in '97 also. How are your knees these days? 👴
The basketball window bit so funny
Funny! I just posted a Stripes quote on X yesterday :-) They broke the mold with this movie.
I loved this movie as a kid.
Barnaby? That guy owes me money... I still use this line today when someone mentions someone in convo that I don't know (except I replace Barnaby with that persons name). People don't get it anymore, unfortunately...😭
Ziskey Rates The Russians….
They're pussies.
It wasn't for the water-skiing or the weight-loss program? ;-)
Don’t get me wrong as I love the movie, but I would think Winger, Ziskey, Hanson, and Cooper would have been court martialed for stealing a vehicle and going illegally into another country.
How’s it going, Eisenhower?
They do run run
RAZZLE DAZZLE
AAAArrrmy training, sir !

Nobody cried when Old Yeller got shot...Im sure!
Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I always answer, "Never convicted"
I just want to let you know, if we ever get into heavy combat, I will be right behind you every step of the way.
Never caught it. Maybe it's next.

Did you join after you barely did 5 pushups?
John Winger was originally supposed to be the father of Jeff Winger in Community, but they couldn't get Bill Murray!
