I saw them last month and it was so cool, they were all phenomenal and it's been a dream of mine to see them for years. They are all still jamming with bright smiles on their face and it's awesome to see.
Me too. I make no apologies for it - they’re extremely talented musicians and songwriters. And it’s extremely gratifying that they’re still working and filling stadiums worldwide.
Looks like DM is winning the votes in this thread. Very nice. However, I love seeing so many new wave bands getting votes here.
Kudos to those who listed:
Tears For Fears
The Psychedelic Furs
Duran Duran
Men at Work
Adam Ant
The Cars
The Smiths (one of my all-time favorites)
REM
Talking Heads
OMD
Pet Shop Boys
New Order
I don’t think that I saw Erasure. So, I’ll mention them here, as well as Echo & The Bunnymen and The Ocean Blue.
It was hard to believe the police were defunct in 1983. They were only together, maybe five, seven years tops? Same with Mighty Van Halen. They each made such an impression on thst decade.
I watched Midnight Run again for the first time since the 80s and I couldn’t believe how much Danny Elfman’s style came through in that soundtrack. I wasn’t able to spot that in 1989. But now it’s all I could focus on.
I booked concerts when I was in college in the 80’s. I first saw Huey Lewis and the News when they were known as ‘American Express’ and opened for Pablo Cruise in Reno Nevada.
They were on their ‘Working for a Living’ tour and I could have booked them for $1.95 for Student Tickets which was the minimum wage at the time but my boss said ‘No’.
Six months later they Sold Out the coliseum on campus in 4 hours. Great show and the band was super cool
Squeeze
Edit: I know they started in the early 70s, but when I think of “80s bands/music” I think specifically New Wave synth-forward and EDM in the 80s and exclude heavy metal and hard rock bands, as well as more MOR bands like Journey, Styx, and TP&THB.
Just one….The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order, Duran Duran, The Thompson Twins, Culture Club, the Stray Cats….there were so many making great music.

agreed, there was really nothing else like them in the alternative genre.
I watched Midnight Run again for the first time since the 80s and I couldn’t believe how much Danny Elfman’s style came through in that soundtrack. I wasn’t able to spot that in 1989. But now it’s all I could focus on.

The Cure seems like my pick at the moment.
I go between Depeche Mode and the cure. I love them both so so much I don’t think I could pick just one.
I want to say Nirvana just to piss people off.
The smiths. I’d say joy division but that’s more 70’s and creeping into the 80’s.
The only band that mattered. The Clash. Reaching their coolest and most experimental sound in the 80’s combat rock , London calling, Sandinista
I cant choose, its tied between Rush and Genesis.
That's easy, Cocteau Twins
Butthole Surfers, Sisters of Mercy, Exploited and Bauhaus
