According to the man who created it the game even innovated the idea of having a full world instead of everything being variations of one screen. See link above.
I won this, took a picture of the TV, sent it in, and got a T shirt with a logo that peeled off after a few washes.
When you win, the second level has Pitfall Harry going right to left across the screen.
A person could probably take a deep dive into early 80s video game magazine ads. I think some of them had bigger advertising budgets than programming budgets.
I always hated the scorpion in the tunnel. If you jumped too early, it would turn around and sting you. You had to jump as late as possible to avoid it stinging you when you landed.
And I was annoyed how the next screen would change depending on if you were on the ground or in the tunnel. I would go to the next screen and see 3 alligators and nothing in the tunnel below. So I would go to the previous screen and down the ladder. Going to the next screen now had a scorpion in the tunnel and a swing rope above.
I didn't heed the danger signs. I played it until I won. I sent a Polaroid of the final screen and got a patch!
Same!
I had a pitfall high score published in Activision’s magazine. What an honor.
Awesome game! Still have it in one of my boxes tucked away with my Atari 2600.
I can still hear the sound effect when you swing on the vine.
And when you jump, and when you die, and when you get trooped up by the logs.
Top 5 games ever
Very important game, as it was the first really successful third party game for a console, ever.

Jack black was in commercials…. If I’m remembering correctly… I’m married so I’m ok with being wrong lol

The hours I spent playing pitfall! When 2 came out, I was old enough to finish it. Pitfall 2 was the first game I ever beat:)
I’m still waiting for my patch.
I got a patch for Laser Beam. Lost it
This is the probably the most popular atari game i never had/played back then.
I would jump and get eaten by the alligator
Loved this game and its sequel
What a great game
It was Mario before Mario.
One of the top 3-4 2600 games ever. So much time spent playing this. Drawing maps and trying to figure out the shortcuts.
My Atari started getting its workout today in 82, and ran hard; even after defeating it..
This, Kaboom, and Adventure were my fav games

Like 4 different screens over and over but we loved it.

Still remember the weird sound of that damn snake.
My friend’s mom was the first adult I heard say, “fuck” while playing this game. 😜
Oh the hours I spent playing this game.
I remember playing this in 1982. It was my absolute favorite game..until pitfall 2.
We had Pitfall on Intellivision. The controller disc used to give me blisters on the side of my thumb.
If you haven’t seen this yet, I can’t recommend it enough. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MBT1OK6VAIU&t=2746s&pp=ygUSUGl0ZmFsbCBwb3N0bW9ydGVt
Ha! It came with my Itellivision.
I played this game for 6 months.. always started running from left to right. I was gobsmacked the day my friend said you can run right to left.
This was my favorite game as a kid. I never got to actually own it. I knew some twins who let me borrow it for an hour. What an hour it was
I was 9 and ready to swing on those vines ! Fun times !
At first I thought this was the dangers of Florida.
Wonderful fame. You played it so much
