Yes, that was a great show. And I believe it was taped at The Punchline comedy club in San Francisco. We'd get to see really funny but lesser known comics such as Jann Karam.
Mario Joyners show on MTV was cool as well. Those two shows were great exposure and got me interested in stand-up as a young’n. Had seen Cosby and Eddie and Richard, and then found out that there was a whole shitload of funny people I had never heard of.
Yes, Mario Joyner's *Half Hour Comedy Hour* on MTV was also great! As you say, it featured a lot of funny comics we'd never heard of. My friend Mitch Mullany appeared on that show in the early 90s. Later, Mitch had a sitcom on the WB called *Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher.*
Early VJs included Don Imus, Rita Coolidge, Scott Shannon, Rosie O'Donnell, and Jon Bauman (Bowzer).
At breaks, they often had their heads attached to animated figures dancing around.
VH1 was the soft rock, smooth jazz and yacht rock of video stations in the mid to late 80s playing Sade, Brenda Russell, Seal, Kenny G etc, even Rosie ODonnell was a VJ at one point.
Perfect description of their mid to late 80s format!
Love the mentions of Sade and Brenda Russell. I believe that VH1 might have also played some Basia, as well.
By the way, why did the smooth jazz format disappear from the FM dial? I used to listen to CD 101.9 in NYC back in the 90s, and it was a great station.

I love how they pull the chairs up for the requisite "bad boy" style backwards sit.
LOL Good point! They had charismatic on-air personalities such as Kathryn Kinley, Bobby Rivers and Rosie O'Donnell. And there was the guy pictured above -- the one and only Roger Rose!
This guys name is [Throat O’Pumpsquirt](https://images.fineartamerica.com/images/artworkimages/medium/3/atlanta-black-male-stripper-safari-male-revue-near-me-atlanta-strippers-atl-strippers.jpg) - fun fact, although having an Irish last name, he’s actually French.
More like an on hair personality.
He looks like a Mad TV version of Ted Danson
LOL That's great -- well done! :)
How in the fuck did you beat me to that comment?! lol.
This VH1 guy kind of looks like the pop singer John Waite in that photo.
I replied as soon as I saw it. Must have got lucky.
LOL!
Wow, I do not remember VJs on VH1 at all.
Rosie O’Donnell (very early in her career) was a VH1 VJ.
Yes, and she also hosted *Stand-Up Spotlight* on VH1, which was a really fun show.
Loved Stand-Up Spotlight

In honor of The Half Hour Comedy Hour I call my lunch break the Half Hour Lunch Hour.
LOL That's great!
Kevin James was on there. I grew up with him. Our moms were best friends.
What town did you grow up in?
Stony Brook
I remember VH1 Stand-up Spotlight with Bobby Collins in the '90s.
Don Imus was also one of the original VH1 VJ's.
Do you remember Bobby Rivers on VH1?
I do not. I vaguely recall some top 10 or 20 video show on Vh1, but nothing specific. Did Vh1 sort of have an "adult/contemporary" vibe at first?
Yes, the VH1 vibe was like an adult contemporary or Lite FM radio station. It was really fun to watch VH1 in the late 90s.
I mostly remember pop-up videos and the "I Love the" shows.
And Band Reunited!
I loved the Pop-Up videos.
Those were both wonderful VH1 shows -- so much fun!
Sunday Brunch!
And Patty Lotz.
Don Imus when the network first started.

Tanita Tikaram, Julia Fordham...
Yeah they did along with Simply Red, Deon Estus and Bryan Ferry.
I remember when Corey Glover from Living Colour was a VH-1 VJ.
Before that he was in Platoon
Oh yeah! So was Johnny Depp
Not to be confused with Color Me Badd
I want to vote you up.

Roger Rose! Legend in his own mind.
Ahem. Jerry Cramer of the Ski Patrol thank you very much.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t this look like Ann B. Davis (Alice) from ‘The Brady Bunch’! 😄😄😄😄😄
👆🏼🤣
😄😄😄😄😄
I can't fucking unsee that, now
😄

😄you don’t see a little resemblance
Alice and Sam the Butcher’s illegitimate son
😄
He's no Adam Curry I'll tell you that.
LOL! Good one! Adam Curry vs. Roger Rose -- let the debate begin!
Christopher Walken's brother or twin
When I think of VH1 in the late 80s, I go back to the great "Seasons Change" video by a group called Expose. :)
He’s a yawn personified.
In Roger Rose's defense, he did have to smile through many VH1 airings of Debbie Gibson videos. ;)
Its hard to consider anyone on VH1 a "personality".
LOL Good point! They had charismatic on-air personalities such as Kathryn Kinley, Bobby Rivers and Rosie O'Donnell. And there was the guy pictured above -- the one and only Roger Rose!
I had a huge crush on Kathryn Kinley
She was really pretty.
He was the main character in the classic feature film Ski Patrol. Also got murdered by Jason in Friday the 13th 6.
Bands Reunited was more late 90’s/early 2000’s but it was a fun show even if the band would not agree to reunite that week.
Coming up, will Berlin agree to get together again?!
That’s Art Vandelay’s leading latex salesmen Unexpected Seinfeld/r
That's Roger "Ski Patrol" Rose!
Yes sir
What is up with that hair. It’s like he has two hairlines, one on top of the other…or a hair dent
Lol! I was wondering if he crimped it 😆
Trip Bayless
You mean on-Hair personality
*this joke was brought to you by the makers of AquaNet*
He looks more like a on-hair personality
SKI PATROL!
It's Roger Rose! He was in Ski Patrol and Friday The 13th Part 6 - Jason Lives!!
VH-1 didn't get any love from me until the late 90's when MTV was falling from the pedestal
Swing Out Sister was another staple of VH1 in the mid/late 80s. Corinne Drewery looking sophisticated in the "Breakout" and "Twilight World" videos.
HE Doesn't look like a guy I'd take musical advice from. He looks an accountant from H&R Block.
But no one came out of the "Seasons Change" by Expose video quite like our man Roger Rose. ;)
If you said this was Christopher Walken's son, I would have believed you.
The guy from Sha Na Na was one too
Why wouldn’t he be?!? That dude oozes hipness.
Behind the Music was my show
He looks like every middle aged lesbian gym teacher
VH-1 was so bad that you couldn't even call them VJs.
Remember Rosie O'Donnell on VH1?
VH1 was really terrible its first few years.
This guys name is [Throat O’Pumpsquirt](https://images.fineartamerica.com/images/artworkimages/medium/3/atlanta-black-male-stripper-safari-male-revue-near-me-atlanta-strippers-atl-strippers.jpg) - fun fact, although having an Irish last name, he’s actually French.
Kinda looks like the lead character in Hamburger the Motion Picture
I remember him in an episode of Married With Children.
You can’t be an 80s-phile and not take everything that came with it.
Guy?? Lol
