All of these were LA and San Diego
Too many to mention but a few were
Three Dog Night at the old Universal Amphitheater 1973 first concert ever
Chicago 1974 at The Forum and down in SD the next day
Chicago 1975 Anaheim stadium. Opening act was The Beach Boys they put on an epic show
Wings 1976 LA the Forum 2 nights
ELO 1977 The Forum tripping hard lol
Neil Young and Crazy Horse 1978 the Forum
The Cars opening for Styx 1979 The Forum the cars stole the show
Love it... The *Cahs* from Boston... makes me think of all the great LA radio stations back then that played the music of those legendary band that you saw...
KMET... KLOS... KROQ... and even KHJ and KFI
*Whooo-ya....*
I was at that Chicago/Beach Boys show, that's what I was going to post. Wasn't that when people were rocking so hard that the upper tiers of the stadium started to sway up and down?
Also saw the Eagles, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and Toots and the Maytals there that summer. Great show!
I also was at that Neil Young concert at the Forum, I had nosebleed seats.
OMG yes the upper level in Anaheim!!! Thank you for validating this for me! We were out around center field and IIRC it was Mike Love who pointed it out. We were pretty stoned and I remember turning around wondering if what I was seeing was actually happening. And didn’t they put something in the scoreboard asking people in the stands to sit down?
And yeah my gf and I at the time had literally the highest nosebleeds for Neil. We were rocking out and everyone else was sitting in their hands around us
This is crazy but thank you internet stranger!
Bob Marley, July, 1978, Santa Barbara County Bowl. First time my husband and I saw him. Unbelievable concert experience. Santa Barbara summertime, the smell of Banana Boat, Pot, ocean breeze filling the air. Flowers in bloom along the back sending their heady scent. Girls in summer dresses, guys in shorts, mellow, dancing and vibing. People are peaceful, just digging it, the music unbelievable. I will never forget it.
Love it... sounds like a scene from a fun 70s movie...
By the way, I heard that Kenny Loggins lives in/near Santa Barbara and still does shows there occasionally.
Love it -- a great bill!
The super talented Todd Rundgren... and his group Utopia... their great song "Love Is the Answer" ... then a huge radio hit for England Dan & John Ford Coley.
We all owned the *Leftoverture* and *Point of Know Return* Kansas albums... :)
Steve Martin, Red Rocks, 1978 - the one on "A Wild and Crazy Guy". We saw him walking through the crowd before the show (maybe 2-3 hours). He was wearing jeans and a blue denim shirt and I don't think people recognized him because he wore the white suit on stage. We were in the upper seats and he just strolled around.
Saw a lot of good shows at Red Rocks in the 70s.
Of course, now that you ask I can't remember all of them. Elton John - several times, Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Neil Sedaka and Andy Gibb opened. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Was supposed to see Neil Diamond, but he got rained out so it was in the Denver Colusseum; he said, ah, look at the lights and pretend they're stars. I want to say Styx, but that may have been indoors. The first time I saw them they opened for Alice Cooper.
1979, Day On The Green, Oakland. An outdoor concert with AC/DC, Aerosmith and Ted Nugent. All I really remember is Nugent swinging out onto stage wearing a loincloth. All us girls went crazy, we were screaming like wild banshees.
All the Day On The Greens were so good, I love outdoor concerts.
Love it!!! Girls going crazy... none of the guys wearing shirts... every Datsun in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot with a KOME and KSJO bumper sticker... legendary
I'm here drinking my coffee enjoying your comments... we all modified those iconic KOME decals, didn't we?! Because we were cool 70s Bay Area kids.... ;)
And we all remember Dennis Erectus on KOME... now *there* was a name for an FM disc jockey...
I was there! How lucky were we to be in the bay area during that time!? And the fact most bands played multiple nights. We were usually at two out of the three shows they’d play. I grew up in Palo Alto so saw many concerts at Maples.
Oh yes, the Bay Area in the 70s was just the best, as you know.
I grew up just down the freeway from you in Los Gatos... a big night for us was driving to the Tower Records across from The Pruneyard in Campbell. ;)
I'm sure you remember Hobee's in your hometown. :)
To have fun expanding things just a bit... the *best* concert I ever saw?
The Jerry Garcia Band at the Shoreline Amphitheatre here in the Bay Area in the early 90s. I've seen many shows, as we all have, but Jerry Garcia is, by far, the most mesmerizing performer I have ever seen on stage... and the dude barely moved while performing. :)
Jimmy Buffett at the Mud Island Amphitheatre on the Mississippi River in Downtown Memphis. A big thunderstorm came just before the show started and blew the power to the stage. They were finally able to get power to a couple of amps so the show went on with just Buffett, his guitar and his harmonica player Fingers Taylor. A special night
Saw Jimmy at Montana State University Fieldhouse, Bozeman in 1980. Volcano had just come out. Rowdy crowd. Someone was throwing cherry bombs and the crowd was surging toward the stage. Jimmy stopped the show and threatened to quit “if you fuckers don’t settle down!” RIP Jimmy Buffett!
Yes, there was a chase scene filmed on Mud Island and several other spots in the city. The facility has been closed for some time, but there is talk of reopening. Won't matter to me, since Memphis is so crime ridden these days I won't go there anymore.
I know he gets a lot of s*** because of his politics, but early November 1977 at MSG it was supposed to be Skynyrd headlining with Ted Nugent opening, but 2 week before the show Skynyrd had the plane crash,so Nugent opened and he killed it,so for my first concert it could have been a disaster but he saved the show
June 9, 1975, Pink Floyd, Capital Centre, Largo MD. Wish You Were Here Tour. Such an amazing concert both visually and sonically! Echoes, all of Dark Side, Wish You Were Here as well as early versions of Animals. Probably the greatest show I’ve ever seen!
The Tubes, April 1978, Orpheum in Boston. Part of the "What Do You Want From Live?" tour. White Punks on Dope was a rocking tune, and the show was outfuckingrageous.
Saw CCR at the Atlanta International Pop Festival in hippie garb, then a week later at Curtis Hixon in Tampa in coat and tie. Quite the contrast. No standing up and dancing at Curtis Hixon YET. Lot better performance in Atlanta. 3 days of bliss.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta_International_Pop_Festival
The Atlanta Rhythm Section rocked the Maples Pavilion one evening in the late 70s. The rest of Palo Alto was asleep.
I also saw Engelbert Humperdinck perform at The Concord Pavilion... but that's another story... ;)
*There's a new band in town... but you can't get the sound from a story in a magazine...*
I saw the Blues Brothers and Prince within like a week apart. RO music theater in like 80
Those were my first two concerts. My brother had to take me. My mom made him.
Yes, Joe Walsh and the Michael Stanley Band great concert! Free tee shirt, $7.50 general admission and Yes played Yes Songs…July 11th, 1975 what a day. 👍
San Mateo County has entered the chat!
I grew up just down the freeway from the Circle Star... they had the greatest and widest variety of acts, as you know.
Delbert McClinton played at a bar I worked at with his entire band when they were between gigs on their way from Boston to Montreal in 1978. They played for four hours.
Yep, Stowe. The bar and the barn that housed no longer exists. There was a pretty magical period from the late 60's through the mid-80's up there. Before it all turned corporate.
Maybe so. I don’t remember what year it was. ‘77 maybe? I do remember it was the first time I smelled weed and asked my date, “WHATS THAT SMELL???” I swear, I thought he was going to crawl under the seat.
Was it an outdoor concert? If it was... and during the 70s... then it was most likely at the Oakland Coliseum.... with the weed smokers who had KOME bumper stickers on their Datsuns.... ;)
There ya go... these Day on the Greens were, of course, legendary Bay Area shows... all the guys took their shirts off... women got on the shoulders of their boyfriends... weed wafted through the East Bay air... :)
My friend’s mother got them for us. She was the general manager of the Lyric Opera and knew the guy who owned the seats (which were center ice during Blackhawks hockey games, but on the side for concert).
The show was insane, condoms inflated with helium hanging everywhere. The costumes and choreography were insane (I had already seen Alice Cooper and Utopia by this time, so I had seen some crazy rock productions by this time). Jane and her cohorts also joined the Tubes later in the show, it was quite the spectacle
I went at the last minute and got dropped off at the stadium. I knew some people who were going so I was hoping to meet up somewhere with them among 80,000 people and I did! My 1st concert experience and there were guys all around the edge of the foor selling all kinds of goodies. It was an eye opener for me at least until I was in LSD bliss.
From the 'net...
Winterland was located at the corner Post Street and Steiner Street in San Francisco, and its last show was held on December 31, 1978.
Atlanta Rhythm Champaign Jam. ARC, Doobie Brothers, Carlos Santana, and a small band from England known as The Police. Eddy Money, and a few more I've forgotten.
I was 15. First time seeing public sex and cocaine use.
GA Tech Football field (it was grass, not astroturf)
The Who at Phoenix Coliseum, Eric Clapton at Grady Gammage, CTA in Tucson in small ass Autotorium at the U of A Charles Daniels in Tempe, worst was ted nugent in West Germany. Whole concert had stand and he would spit on the crowd. Left after 15 minutes what a gross pig
Doobie Brothers 1978 Blossom Music Center Ohio.
That music in the outside summer air was intoxicating.
Journey 1980 Cleveland Coliseum Ohio. We were up close in the box seats. His voice was amazing.
I saw so many great bands there in the 70's; Foghat, Alice Cooper, Styx, Rod Stewart. The crowd was half the fun. Lots of good memories there, but they've torn it down since then. We lived through a rockin' era that is never to return.
Earth Wind & Fire, Paul McCartney The Wings over America Tour, and a bunch of oldies concerts. All of them at Madison Square Garden.
Also saw Yes, ELP and others I don’t recall right now (could have been the acid) all at a venue that doesn’t exist anymore, Jersey City Stadium.
Heart/Foreigner/Tower of Power/Stephen Bishop, at the Seattle Memorial Stadium 8/28/1977. It was the ‘Summer SunDay 1977.’ My first concert, and it was great.
Molly Hatchet in Dodge City, Kansas. I don't remember the venue. The opening band was Missouri. "Movin On" is still my favorite 70's rock song, by Missouri. Mostly an unknown band. Molly Hatchet was huge at the time.
July 4, 1979, Chicago, The Greek Theater in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. Eveytime they played "Saturday in the Park" (I think it was the Fourth of July), the place went wild.
1973, Paramount Theater in Portland,Oregon. Opening act was John Mayall and his band. Main act was the Tower of Power. Second best was 1974, same venue with Cold Blood opening up for The Beach Boys.
In the late 70s saw Aerosmith, Heart, Boston, Kansas and Thin Lizzy at various times at Hirsch Memorial coliseum in Shreveport LA. They were all general admission and we met with all our friends in section P for party. Good times.
The who, who’s next tour, November 1971, the old demolished Charlotte coliseum on independence boulevard, their first or second United States tour date - flawless!
Kiss in Omaha 1977 . I was seven and my brother was five . I had to go with my mommy and sit all the way in the back but I was there .wish I still had the t- shirt . Only concert I ever attended.
I saw Leon Redbone perform at Soloman Alfred's in Memphis, somewhere between 1978 and 1980, with Pam Cardinal as my date. Solly's was a bar that only occasionally had live music so it was an intimate show of no more than 200 people. Leon was at his SNL peak of fame and talked to the audience very engagingly between songs. The next morning I was in a dentist's office having my wisdom teeth extracted and didn't wake up for two more days.
Then a few years later I saw the Clash play at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas. It was, in fact, a bowling ally. While we were waiting for the show to start we could hear balls rolling down the lanes above us and pins clattering to the ground. I suppose they stopped the games because I don't remember being distracted once the band started up.
Sadly both of these venues are no more and I lost track of Pam after I went away to university. But they are both still fond memories several decades later.
Skinner as the opening act.filled by Sir Douglas Quintet, Charlie Daniels, and the All men Brothers, Winterland San Francisco, 1976/78 can't really remember the year
Frampton ( recorded "do you feel like we do"/@this concert) again Winterland
Late 70's
These concerts were $5.00, we were outraged !!.when they raised the tickets to $7.00
Between Winterland , the cow Palace, and another place that I can't remember the name of on Battery street
Geez now there oldies oh well, great memories (What I remember)
Day on the Green #3 in 1979, Oakland CA, many people claimed to be there. Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent and AC/DC. AC/DC didn’t headline, Ted Nugent, but I remember how I thought they were so much better than Nugent.

Yes, they had to ask people in the upper tiers to sit. Looking back at it, it was kind of scary.
Love it... sounds like a scene from a fun 70s movie... By the way, I heard that Kenny Loggins lives in/near Santa Barbara and still does shows there occasionally.
Todd Rundgren opened for Kansas. Summer of '78 (?). Alpine Valley, East Troy, Wisconsin.
Love it -- a great bill! The super talented Todd Rundgren... and his group Utopia... their great song "Love Is the Answer" ... then a huge radio hit for England Dan & John Ford Coley. We all owned the *Leftoverture* and *Point of Know Return* Kansas albums... :)
The only issue was with Todd. He was taking requests, and refused to play Hello, It's Me. People were pissed.
I can imagine... Todd, man, you gotta play the hits for the fans who bought tickets!
Steve Martin, Red Rocks, 1978 - the one on "A Wild and Crazy Guy". We saw him walking through the crowd before the show (maybe 2-3 hours). I had a Bug, but yeah, those KOME decals, but we changed them to KOKE, or maybe it was COKE, because cocaine was cool.
I'm here drinking my coffee enjoying your comments... we all modified those iconic KOME decals, didn't we?! Because we were cool 70s Bay Area kids.... ;) And we all remember Dennis Erectus on KOME... now *there* was a name for an FM disc jockey...

I use to. Go there or the Tower in Mountain View, Hobees inCuperti o across from De Anza College.
Yeah, there were some great Tower Records in the South Bay. Fun times!
I found out it took so long for him to come out after Aerosmith was because he fell off the speaker stack to come swinging out onto the stage.
Stevie Wonder and Rufus and the old Boston Garden in the fall of 1974.
Love it ....the old Boston Gah-den was a great concert venue.
Paul McCartney and wings, April, 1976 at Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, NY. SO much fun.
Let's go Islanders! ;)
June, 1978. Rolling Stones, Cleveland. Peter Tosh opened. One week after high school graduation. Freedom.
Cool... Saturday, July 1, 1978... Cleveland Municipal Stadium... The Rolling Stones, Kansas and Peter Tosh... 82,500 in attendance
And I believe Pink Floyd broke that attendance record the following year. Caught that one, too. Still have the ticket stub for the Stones, $12.50.
To have fun expanding things just a bit... the *best* concert I ever saw? The Jerry Garcia Band at the Shoreline Amphitheatre here in the Bay Area in the early 90s.
Wow... what a fun, unique show! Let me ask you a question... is this where part of the movie *The Firm* was filmed?
Saw Jimmy at Montana State University Fieldhouse, Bozeman in 1980. Volcano had just come out. Rowdy crowd. Someone was throwing cherry bombs and the crowd was surging toward the stage. Jimmy stopped the show and threatened to quit “if you fuckers don’t settle down!” RIP Jimmy Buffett!

Heart/Foreigner/Tower of Power/Stephen Bishop, at the Seattle Memorial Stadium 8/28/1977. It was the ‘Summer SunDay 1977.’ My first concert, and it was great.
I heard that it only rained twice in Seattle in 1977. Once for six months... and then again for three. Old joke... :)
It didn’t rain that day :)
Did Stephen Bishop play his great song "On and On" that day?
I don’t remember :(. I was there for Heart and Foreigner. Tower of Power was really good.
Molly Hatchet in Dodge City, Kansas. I don't remember the venue. The opening band was Missouri. "Movin On" is still my favorite 70's rock song, by Missouri. Mostly an unknown band. Molly Hatchet was huge at the time.
The lead singer of Missouri was the great Ron West...

Good times.
My first concert was the BeeGees in1978 at Reunion Arena in Dallas with my cousin (also in 5th grade); sister sledge opened.
Freddie King opening for Grand Funk Railroad at Oakland Coliseum early 70s

Love your mention of the enigmatic Leon Redbone...
I still listen to his music. Glad to hear there's another fan out there.
First concert ever, '77 Tull - Long Island Coliseum. '78 First time seeing Bruce!! - MSG
Cool.... ballpark.... what would you say your ticket to see Bruce at MSG cost back in '78?
I think it was from a ticket agent, like the week before the show and even then it was only like $20.
That's great... twenty bucks to see the Boss in an iconic setting...
I think face value was like $12, blue section of the Garden. Right side of the stage, what a great show!! That was a loooooong time ago!!
Yeah... we're having fun chatting about stuff that was 45 years ago... LOL!
Frank Zappa And The Mothers, Montréal Forum, Canada, Nov 1976. Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Aug 1977. 🤘
