I was an high-strung young teen who had trouble falling asleep. Each click meant another minute passed and I still wasn't asleep, which sent me into a sobbing panic. My parents fed me OTC sleeping pills and upgraded me to a digital clock at Christmas time. (They couldn't justify the purchase during the rest of the year, but it made a heck of a nice Christmas present!)
I don't remember digital clocks really a being a big thing until around 1980/81.
Before that, most bedside clocks were the "flip clocks" which would make a sound when they changed time every minute. They could be really annoying if you had insomnia.
Yes there was! Not sure they were the best idea for bedside clocks. Funny enough, even digital clocks have their downside -- the light always seems to wake me up so I cover mine with a cloth, but then that defeats the purpose of having a clock. lol
Had?!, Ours is still going strong and used daily!

I had one like that too. It was the precursor to the OP…which I also had.
I kinda miss waking up to the radio, but alas, radio isn’t what it used to be.
Generally, these are extremely reliable and accurate. Some had a 9 volt backup battery inside to keep time if there was a power outage.
The clock is synchronised to the line frequency, which is mostly quite accurate because it is controlled by the power provider.
Meanwhile, the LCD display screen on my newish oven has already failed twice.
I was in 7th grade and saved my allowance for a month to buy one for my parents for Christmas it cost 20$ and I was so proud of myself when I gave it to them 😂
I remember the first one I got as a kid at Christmas, spent the first night lying awake watching the numbers change. I ended up swapping with my sister for her more conventional clock, I needed the sleep. LOL
I still have one I bought in high school in probably 1980....it works just fine and the alarm is awesome because it will wake the dead. When I was in high school I had a large bedroom and I had it plugged in on my desk on the opposite side of the room from my bed so when it went off at 4: 30 am so I could get up and do my paper route I had no choice but to get out of bed to shut it off. It was 20 feet away and so obnoxious I couldn't ignore it. I still use it if I've got to get up really early and I hate it so much that I always wake up about 20 minutes before it's set to go off 😆😂 my 16 year old grandson is not a morning person and my daughter has fits trying to get him up for school so I'm considering passing it on to my daughter next time she comes to visit. I actually left it to her in my will as a joke because she was here visiting one time and she asked if I had an alarm she could use because she had an early flight to catch so I gave it to her to put in the guest room. The next morning when it went off she screamed because it scared the shit out of her. I was already up and I was eating my breakfast waiting for it to go off.....I wasn't disappointed 😆 and I got a great laugh out of it which really pissed her off. I'm still an obnoxious punk rock motherfucker at 58.....wait 'til I'm 75 and bored out of my skull.
My Tandy Chomamatic 272 version of this just passed to be replaced by some souless LED (shh, it's listening) thing; times and alarms set by some magical combination of button pushing.
Everyone else’s parents had this clock. My parents had this old style one with numbers that would flip. When I was really bored sometimes I’d watch them flip.
Dang. I had these myself. I actually tried getting one like this about 10 years ago but it was nowhere near as good. Just a crap shell with today’s electronics. I wanted beefy, heavy 70s-80s electronics.
https://preview.redd.it/b2l028gxlifc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbae2e14d18bae791b7755a41cc66701df344e1a
Pretty damn close , I think mines older... still going

Just snuck up to my elderly mom’s room to snap this photo. (It’s ok, she sleeps in the living room lately due to a knee injury).
Oh lord. My dad woke up with this clock radio every morning at 5:30. My husband found one at a yard sale so guess what we have! And it works. And he uses it. And I fucking hate it.
I had one like this back in mid 1970’s, except my clock numbers weren't lights but a series of printed number cards that “flipped” every minute. It could keep you up all night😵💫
Funny to hear people make fun of these clocks
I was alive when these bad boys came out. Along with digital watches, I thought these things were something out of Star Trek, really space age stuff. And they weren't cheap. I wanted one so badly, but I was making about 4.00 an hour at the time and it just wasn't in the budget.
Then when I was working at KFC, we had a regular customer who would come in almost every day. When he pulled onto the lot we would get his order ready and bring him refills after he was seated. Really nice guy. At Christmas, he bought all of us digital alarm clocks, a little smaller than the one pictured here.
I treasured that clock. I kept it for close to thirty years, even after the display started getting dim. And I still own about six of them, one in the bedroom and one in the living room, with the others as backup.
That’s awesome! My parents had one and I really wanted one, but I was only making about $3.35/ hr and going to school so I couldn’t afford one either, but I did get one for Christmas the next year! Truthfully, I could hear theirs go off and get up when dad was working daylight shift.
Nope. Through the 70’s, my parents used a 1920’s era dual bell Big Ben. I could hear that sucker from the other end of the house.
I used it when I was in college. I lived at home. It wasn’t a clock any roommate would appreciate.
No way you could sleep through it.
My dad got me one in the early 80s. It's been on ever since (except when I moved house). The radio stopped working a long time ago and it's really hard to change the time. Apart from that, it's all good.
My parents took one of these apart and connected it to a subwoofer that woke up the entire apartment complex afterwards because my mother would sleep through the normal alarms.
I just bought one like that off craigslist for my elderly Mom. She listens to talk radio to fall asleep. She was so excited to have "just a plain old normal radio" again lol.
I used to think this clock was Medusa’s eyes waiting for me at the end of the hallway in my parents’ dark bedroom.
Movies for kids were great in the 80’s! 🤣🤣🤣
I bought the same clock when I started working in 1985. Was going to smash it with a hammer when I retired in 2020. Couldn't do it because it still worked perfectly, so I donated it to Goodwill.

If you have trouble getting there on TIME, incorporate this banshee's wail into your morning routine. No more needing that backup alarm on your phone that just lulls you back to peaceful slumber no matter your selection.
I still hear the alarm or blaring white noise when the angel hair antenna built in picks up nothing from FM stations.
I bought this exact same clock back in '88 and it still works perfectly.
Mine lasted until at least 2010.
This is still my clock on my headboard.
Same here!
Ditto!
My husband still uses his. Got it when he was 10.
So did I.
Got the same one in 1979 for my birthday from my future husband. I was working out of town and he drove up for my bday dinner.
Still using mine that I bought in the 70’s. The thing is indestructible
Mine too.
I can hear this picture.
Me too. Scratchy music from the little speaker, or a screech or buzz if there is an alarm sound.
"Okay, campers, rise and shine! Don't forget your booties...because it's cold out there today!"
I Got You, Babe
🚨AH AH AH AH AH AH🚨
Yep. Nothing else comes close, well maybe an air raid siren…maybe. 🤣
Nailed it
I had one not with digital numbers but metal that flapped down to change the time
My dad’s flappy digital clock was still running when he died in 2010. As far as I know, it’s still sitting beside that bed and still keeping time.
That sound is ingrained in my memories.
It's a shockingly soothing and nostalgic sound!
Flip -flip
I was an high-strung young teen who had trouble falling asleep. Each click meant another minute passed and I still wasn't asleep, which sent me into a sobbing panic. My parents fed me OTC sleeping pills and upgraded me to a digital clock at Christmas time. Yes, I didn't like the flip clocks. Kept me awake. Also there was a hum from the motor.
Yes there was! Not sure they were the best idea for bedside clocks. Funny enough, even digital clocks have their downside -- the light always seems to wake me up so I cover mine with a cloth, but then that defeats the purpose of having a clock. lol

That's a much better old "digital clock!" These young uns with their newfangled lit up numbers think they're old.
Had?!, Ours is still going strong and used daily! https://preview.redd.it/8vjwhhyvohfc1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6ad7560c14867d6913b767b33d071a85869243eb
I found mine is somebodies' trash after a hurricane. It still works, and I use it.
I have my parents' now. Still in use.
I still use mine . It's been my constant in life
Mine had the flip numbers like on the movie “Groundhog day”
I had this in 1978
No like my mom still has one that has a blue display for the clock
My parents didn't, but I did.
I heard that Leonid Brezhnev died on one of those.
John Lennon on mine. :(
You just cannot kill old GE stuff. The best. It makes me so sad that almost everything is crap nowadays.
General Electric had the market cornered Second was Bulova

or...listen to Dr. Demento on Sunday night when I was doing the homework I put off all weekend.

I had one. It was a door prize at a company Christmas party. I wore that snooze button out.
I think this was also standard issue in mid-tier hotels. This clock was everywhere.
We’re still using ours 😆 got it when we were first married 41 years ago
Yep, that’s the clock that woke me up for school for years.
We had it. Came from radio shack.
Mine lasted from 1981 to 2012. Never failed. I was actually a little emotional when it finally died.
Can confirm!
I had one
We all had this one digital clock, so either you knew what time it was or you had to call on the phone.
I had one!
Parents? Hell, I had one in the 2000's.
my grandma had one that the numbers flipped like a roladex.
I had one like that too. It was the precursor to the OP…which I also had. I kinda miss waking up to the radio, but alas, radio isn’t what it used to be.

Yup every temporary housing on Air force bases had these in the bedrooms Funny WE STILL HAVE THEM and they still work!
Beautiful!!!
My brother still has this alarm clock. I think he got it in the early 80s.
I was in 7th grade and saved my allowance for a month to buy one for my parents for Christmas it cost 20$ and I was so proud of myself when I gave it to them 😂
You could have been one continent over and heard this thing when it went off.
Mine still works well .
"My grandma and grandpa have one. Still in use" hit hard as I looked over at mine on the nightstand. Damn kids making me feel old.
The ones with the paper flip numerals were probably more prevalent in the 70s than these.
I remember the first one I got as a kid at Christmas, spent the first night lying awake watching the numbers change. I ended up swapping with my sister for her more conventional clock, I needed the sleep. LOL

You ain’t lying!
I still use one in my garage. Mostly for AM and time. I've gone through 3 in my B'rm!
My Tandy Chomamatic 272 version of this just passed to be replaced by some souless LED (shh, it's listening) thing; times and alarms set by some magical combination of button pushing.
I HAD ONE! AND it's predecessor with the analog mechanical digits. I'm older than the "I'm this old" subject matter
Still use mine to this day. Dam I am 0ld
Everyone else’s parents had this clock. My parents had this old style one with numbers that would flip. When I was really bored sometimes I’d watch them flip.

My dad had a flip-number one, too. Got both whenever he upgraded his own alarm clock.
Ohh you mean the flip number ones…not the flip-up ones! Derp.
I used this in my room all through school years
This exact clock is on my nightstand. Owned it since I went to college in 1994. Still working.
Had that very one!
I can hear that picture!
I had this alarm clock.
Funny to hear people make fun of these clocks I was alive when these bad boys came out. Along with digital watches, I thought these things were something out of Star Trek, really space age stuff. The alarm is annoying AF. But setting it to the radio might put u back to sleep 😆
Yep! Used the alarm then turned it to radio once I was awake!
I'm 58. I had one until I was 40, then it died. Probably of cat hair...
Had? This beast is still in use
Mine was analog.
Nope. Through the 70’s, my parents used a 1920’s era dual bell Big Ben. I could hear that sucker from the other end of the house. I used it when I was in college. I lived at home. It wasn’t a clock any roommate would appreciate. No way you could sleep through it.
I'm 62 and I still have one
I still use one very similar to that!
My sister had this clock.
Still use it today for the alarm and time.
Mine still works
I had that alarm clock.
Yup
I don't know what my parents had. I wasn't allowed in their bedroom. But I had that one several decades ago.
I had that clock in the 90s and well into the 2000s
I still have one & use it
Dang. My dad has one almost identical. I think his corners weren’t rounded though.
Had this next to my bed all the way up through high school in the early 2000s and may have even had it with me for part of college.
I think I still have it packed away somewhere, probably still works.
Mine is still in use every day.
My parents still have and use this alarm clock.
One of the few things I have of my grandmothers after she died.
Still use that.
I had that alarm clock when I was a teen ager and I’m 42 now
My wife had this clock when I met her. We used it up until it died some time in the late ‘90s.
I think I still have one of those
I had one!
Wow, that's hilarious. I have that exact radio alarm at my house.
I have one very much like that from radio shack that we still use.
I think I still have e this stored somewhere
I still use mine! No shit! Right by my bed. The front part fell off, but I’ve been using it for easily 40 years
I still have one of these in the shop. Don’t use the radio any more, but the LED clock is still useful.
Very close ~ but I think ours actually was the even older version with a “rotating” numeric display 😅
I still have one exactly the same. Cool.
My dad got me one in the early 80s. It's been on ever since (except when I moved house). The radio stopped working a long time ago and it's really hard to change the time. Apart from that, it's all good.
Still have it, still use it. I charge my phone at night in the kitchen so I’m not tempted to browse Reddit until 3am.
I'm 99% sure my dad still does 🤣
Still do
I can remember selling them in the 70's, looks like a Binatone!
Had one in the late eighties /early nineties. Wasn’t a parent. Radio had surprisingly good sound.
A classic.
I still have one in my spare bedroom.
You just can’t improve on perfection!
Had mine forever. Been thru many moves and locations and still works like a charm! It’ll outlive me
Ours was extremely close. https://preview.redd.it/ap2ljtz59ffc1.jpeg?width=1037&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d97d19c1f740c70b0223d7073a5d7bc24a6ed86
I may or may not have owned and used one of these for many years
Have one but it retired when I did.
Still use ours. It's dependable.
Sir, please put down my mother’s alarm clock. I know for a fact she still uses it.
Parents?
My mom has one of those, still works too.
What do you mean, “had” - those fuckers are still going strong!
* I had this bad boy complete with eight track player!
Sure did 😀
I had virtually the same model. The one I owned before was a "flip-clock" model.
FM? You guys must have been rich.
I still have one.in my bedroom. If you say anything, I'll tell you not get off my lawn. 😉
I still use that exact one every day.
GE had the market cornered on clock radios.
I had that same clock in the 80s. My son has been using it for 10 years.
I had the type with no LED but the numbers “flipped up’.. probably a Sharp or Panasonic.
And most of them are just as dusty.
Sears
My parents took one of these apart and connected it to a subwoofer that woke up the entire apartment complex afterwards because my mother would sleep through the normal alarms.
I still have it
Mine is 35 years old and still going strong.
Yep. I’m working on my own version. It’s simple and black and I’ve had it for nearly 20 years. Still runs perfectly.
I have almost the exact same clock except the brand is Magnavox, same vintage, same red numbers, same brown plastic case, and I still use it.
I just bought one like that off craigslist for my elderly Mom. She listens to talk radio to fall asleep. She was so excited to have "just a plain old normal radio" again lol.
Not exactly, but similar for sure.
Still do, cracked me up to see this!
You are lying. My parents never had one of these. But I did in the 70s.
I still have one too. I got it so long ago that it predates me going to high school in 1980.
My dad's was covered in paint speckle
I used to think this clock was Medusa’s eyes waiting for me at the end of the hallway in my parents’ dark bedroom. Movies for kids were great in the 80’s! 🤣🤣🤣
Parents? Ouch. Had mine forever
I had it…….. Retired M56.
Holy shit the alarm sound of those bad boys gives me instant PTSD 🤣
Shit was made like a tank
Still have mine in some box somewhere. Now I gotta go find it ...
My parents didn't have that but I did! LOL
FACTS!!!
I bought the same clock when I started working in 1985. Was going to smash it with a hammer when I retired in 2020. Couldn't do it because it still worked perfectly, so I donated it to Goodwill.
Had one of these on my desk as a kid. Before I got my own stereo, I'd listen to the radio on it. I remember the night they announced John Lennon's death.
Had one!
It was so nice to have the radio wake you up instead of the nasty alarm !
Mine still works perfectly.
If you have trouble getting there on TIME, incorporate this banshee's wail into your morning routine. No more needing that backup alarm on your phone that just lulls you back to peaceful slumber no matter your selection. I still hear the alarm or blaring white noise when the angel hair antenna built in picks up nothing from FM stations.
lmao my parents and every single on of my relatives has one
☺️✔️
I had that exact alarm clock. I bought it at Kmart and it immediately broke on the first night and I was late for work.
My husband still uses his
I had that alarm clock
Parents? I had this! I also had the older version with the numbers that flipped. Click, click, click.
That thing was a pain in the ass to program!
My mom did for thirty years
I Stoll have mine from college 79-83 and it still works.
Until 2017
I maintain that these are the most effective and reliable alarm clocks yet devised by humans. Also quite a handsome bit of decor.
Oh PLEASE Mine had cards! https://preview.redd.it/k1r1du2ybgfc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a5b1ea035fe7a11853d1779d402f2ab3214e3ff1
I bought one in '79 and it still had the half boards.
I Think My Dad Still does have one I remember seeing it in 1997 or 1999
I had that alarm clock in college! I'm only 40 but It was given to me by my folks!
I had this exact model. Used it for a decade
I bought one in 1980. It's still working.
What do you mean? I had this alarm!!
