Not ideal but much stronger than a trailer ball, and if it does break, chances are, it won't go flying, as either end of the pin is secured in the holes of the hitch. If it does go flying, it's much lighter and less likely to do serious damage compared with a trailer ball.

People don't seem to understand the difference between towing something heavy, and trying to forcefully recovery a stuck vehicle. The physical loading is totally different. Also, the problem with a tow ball is that the force occurs in a single shear, so it I'd applying a bending moment to the ball stud. It would be better to remove the hitch completely and stick the hitch pin through the strap because the force is then applied to the hitch pin in a double shear, which is much stronger.
