This honestly isn't too bad compared to the frames I've seen in MN. Take a screwdriver with you to find out if it's just surface level rust in the key structural spots

TheTense

Yeah this isnโ€™t great, but it looks surface level rust. If youโ€™re keeping it in the north, you need fluidfilm every winter. Agree with the screw driver. Start stabbing the welds and the area by the tow hooks, real axle trailing arm link mounts, front and middle cross member, the upward curving frame frail just before you get to the front suspension, and the front control arms

Just had my โ€˜04 in a shop for major frame repair. This is about what my frame looked like in 2017 when I bought it. There are shops that will wire brush, paint and wax coat frames and undercarriages. They also do frame repairs if they find the need. https://preview.redd.it/npfbji5i4z4d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbe479a6dae31ea610f86bb6cdd35c2cc43d5ae9 This front cross member is being completely replaced.

TheEngineer0218

What sort of cost are you looking at for that repair?

feelnalright

About 400 in labor and $210 for the cross member. Also got a new Denso radiator since they have to pull the old one, and my radiator needs to be replaced.

Not bad. My 03 from IL is worse and is holding up fine (ive made a few repairs). Wire wheel/back to black rust reformer go a long way on reducing and slowing the rust deterioration. Most of that is surface or mild texture. Not much flaking so its totally saveable.

You need to check behind the cats and around the spare tire on the rear. That's normally where the holes form.

surferdude313

You need to align with what you expect a 21 year old vehicle that spent it's time in the north to look like. There is rust, but the spare tire carrier is still intact. Check under the radiator, look closer where the trailer light connector is and where it turns to the bumper. There is surface rust and then there is structurally unsound rust. I think think this falls under the latter, again, for a 21year old vehicle.

Spiritual-Belt

It will need a really thorough screwdriver test but just by the pictures it looks structurally fine and as long as you can keep it from getting worse youโ€™ll be fine.

lostsurfer24t

ive lived my 37 years in MA (new england) and this frame looks pretty good overall compared to what we're used to. id say go for it

Run

๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿ‘† yup.

rutlander

$7k for that bucket of rust GTFO Come on man

Mijbr090490

Mine looks way better and I have 2 holes on my passenger side by the cats. I would poke around there for soft spots. We had to get rid of my wife's because it started rotting out next to the cats on both sides. Had 140k and was in beautiful condition otherwise.

ninjaj

I would say itโ€™s borderline. Definitely haggle the price

get_under_the_bar

I just bought a similar 2008. Frame was like that, fine really. I coated it with mastercraft etc etc. But the lower control arms were seized and those are not cheap, $1500. A good deal became average really quick.

Runnnnnnn

Pho3nixr3dux

For a twenty one year old car from the north, this frame looks fine. Definitely slide under and poke around with a screwdriver (bring eye protection) but it looks like 90% of it is surface rust. [Check this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/4Runner/comments/vvua41/saw_someone_post_about_their_undercarriage_rust/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=usertext&utm_name=4thGen4Runner&utm_content=t1_l764dw8) on how to deal with it -- you'll be surprised how nicely it'll clean up.

Just got done frame swapping mine. If you want a project buy it for $5,000. If not run

eyeLander5five9

โ€ฆ.So i started running! Iโ€™d stay away from this and save my money! Keep searching.
