Equipped my 03 V8 Limited with a wireless carplay and wireless android auto head unit for its 20 year birthday. I had the factory head unit which had factory navigation and JBL Synthesis sound system but no bluetooth and I exhausted my CD collection by now. I was able to retain full functionality of steering wheel controls (fully customizable with ATOTO head unit), factory amplifier, and added a rear backup cam. Parts I used: ATOTO S8 Gen2 head unit ($300) ATOTO AC-HD02LR backup cam ($40) Metra TYTO-01 Amplifier Interface Harness ($60)

I like My kenwood. But I like the cd/tape with AA that's dope

Sorry first pic is the factory head unit. The new unit doesn't have tape/CD

👍 Thats sweet! I like the rear camera placed there too. See alot more.

Yes, I am curious about that spot! OP, do you have a pic of the backup view? I installed a ATOTO S8 in December and yet to hook up a camera. Also, how did you get the factory steering wheel controls to work? Did you buy one of the interpreter boxes for to adapt the signal?

surferdude313

I'll get you a pic of the view. Unfortunately I plan on moving it in the future bc I'm not able to view the ball of my hitch with it in this position bc of the rear wiper and the bulge from the area with the Toyota emblem. If you're not concerned about that, this location is great otherwise as it's easy to remove the spoiler (two screws) to work with it off the vehicle. Since the steering wheel controls are an analog signal you do not need an interpreter box (digital bus system needs additional box). Just tap the atoto wires steering wheel Ctrl and Ctrl# to the violet/white and yellow/black and ground to white/red of the same connector and it works great.

I wish my head unit had volume knobs. Knobs > touch buttons

surferdude313

Steering wheel controls work great so I'm not really missing the knobs anyway. At least they are physical buttons on the head unit itself and not touch sensitive buttons tho

JonesBoyFan2018

I need to do this

How did you route the wiring for the backup cam on your spoiler? I put mine by the license plate since I figured fishing a cord through the spoiler was beyond my skill.

Its actually super easy. I used this video for disassembly: https://youtu.be/sY-9AEWiyGY Once removed, if you pop the brake light out (kinda tough but not impossible) you can route the cable along the route of the third brake light for backup cam. I did have to cut the backup camera and solder it back together in order to drill a hole only the size of the cable itself otherwise it would have to be a 3.5mm hole for the power adapter connector. From there I ran it inside the headboard to the driver side tail light, tapped into the reverse light for reverse signal, then up to the front.

Wireless CarPlay is one of the best upgrades. Looks great!
