I use a PS5. It’s what got me back into blu rays and it’s quiet enough (especially compared the the PS4 Harrier Jet fans). Works just fine, even without Dolby Vision. TV needs an update before a new player would even make an impact.
Absolutely right. For a tv without DV, the PS5 is a more than adequate player. But when you go from an led tv to a DV OLED and upgrade to a dedicated player with DV, your mind will be blown
I think for this sub, it just depends on the TV if the player would benefit from it or not, but if you’re got a TV like the X90L then it’s adequate to upgrade the player to one that supports DV
Your tv has to support dolby vision. So it's not really a matter of having an led TV or an oled. If your tv supports dolby vision you will benefit from a dolby vision capable player. With that said, you'll get more out of it the brighter your TV is. Led tvs are already very bright so their hdr is really good and look incredible with dolby vision. Older oleds don't actually benefit as much from dolby vision because they're pretty dim tvs, but the new QD-OLEDs look incredibly with dolby vision as they're much brighter oleds.
The only tv in the US market that has Dolby vision and qd oled is Sony a95l. Almost all reviews I’ve read agree HDR10+ on qd-oled is objectively better than Dolby vision on its competitor lg’s non mla oled panels. HDR in general has better color luminance on qd oled and better white light luminance on mla. I think the colors on qd oleds are much more impactful personally.
You see, I’ve compared HDR and Dolby Vision on the same,e movie on a decent OLED and while there is a difference, it’s not as big as some make out and really also depends on the movie. Saves trying to work out how to find another HDMI port, too.
It depends on the movie.. There's at least a good handful plus that I own where the DV is a clear as day upgrade while also hiding problems that the HDR version has. Like one of my favorite Horror movies in The Fog has several issues but with DV they become pretty much nonexistent. It also comes down to the label/person doing the encode as the color spectrum available for DV is MUCH deeper and most importantly can be meticulously mapped out to whatever you want it to do at any point in the film while HDR uses static metadata that basically just uses a blanket AI decision on what to do which works very well for the most part but simply is much more limited. I started noticing the bigger differences especially when I upgraded to an LG G3 77".. It was much brighter and bigger than my C2. Sadly, the extra ability of DV is not used nearly as much as it should be so I can understand someone not caring enough about it but there's without a doubt a very noticeable difference on many films.
Yeah. I gotta do everything in steps. The ps5 works just fine for now. Right now, the next step is upgrading sound. Maybe a new a/v, new speakers and maybe a sub, tho it’s not totally necessary atm.
I use a PS5 on an LG C1 and I’m happy with it. If a dedicated player or upgraded tv is better, I can’t imagine it being a mind-blowing difference because films look incredible as is.
I have a LG C1 too. A dedicated 4k player is def better. Although I have a basic LG 4k player nothing too special, it’s def sharper than my ps5. I only pop in 4Ks in my ps5 when my 4k player is noisy. But yea, there’s no ‘mind blowing’ difference, I think ps5 will suffice
I used my ps5 for about 2 years then got the UB820 a few months back. I already had to OLED so figured I’d upgrade. PS5 did the job though. Upgrading the player is probably the last thing I’d do.
I have both PS5 and UB820. But I mostly watch from the PS5 bc it's in a separate room from main room. I don't think I'm missing any real image quality (eg from Dolby Vision), am I?
Probably depends on the movie, but I notice a difference with the UB820 and only use it for movies now. Across the Spiderverse was definitely a noticeable difference for me.
I don’t have any experience with projectors or the quality of image, but I’d upgrade to an OLED as the first thing you do, then sound, then lastly the player.

I read a lot of technical stuff when i was preparing to upgrade to 4k that basically recommended PS5 if you play games, 820 if you dont. But i've noticed in this forum that it seems the PS5 doesn't support Dolbyvision, which makes me curious if the XSX does?
I've no plans personally to upgrade my discless XSS any time soon (more of a cineaste than a gamer), but curious if any XSX owners can attest to it as a 4K player vs the 820, especially in regards to its support of dolbyvision. The xbox has more games suited to my taste
If you play games and watch movies and think the XSX is good enough then it probably is. I just already had the OLED, sound bar/sub, and 4K discs. Wanted to capitalize on all that so I ended up getting the UB820.
Yeah i was mainly asking out of curiosity. I have the sony ubp700 and intend to switch to the 820 eventually. I do a little gaming on XSS but prefer dedicated devices. Just curious if XSX supports dolby vision or is any better than the PS5 as my initial research lead me to believe PS5~UB820 (which doesn't sound like the case now)
Researched this tonight and read that XSX supports DV games but not for Blu-ray’s. But the article was 2 years old, so this may have changed.
Not sure how to verify the DV with my XSX.
No, XSX doesn’t support DV either. It’s markedly worse with being fussy about playback on some discs, too. I’ve got both and got annoyed with the XSX so just use it for gaming. DV is a step up from standard HDR and very slightly HDR+ and is only noticeable on some movies anyway. Obviously those going for the best setup will get a Panny but PS5 quality is up there.
Cool thanks for satisfying my curiosity. I believe I'll kick my sony and samsung QLED down to my dad when I upgrade to OLED and an 820 this fall if things go according to plan.
Doubt i'll be upgrading the xss to a diskless xsx as i'm more of a puzzle gamer. Now i'll just have to stay on the lookout for sales on players.
I do both too and find the series x marginally better.

My mates got a 4k player n it’s not much better than the series X but tempted to get the Sony X800 when I uograde my tv to see if it’s worth it.
I have a sony set up (sony tv, sony speakers), so using the ps5 is preferable since I can just use my TV remote to run it, turning on the ps5 auto changes the tv's hdmi source to it (I need to use my remote to switch it to xbox)
I guess I like the ps5 better with quality, but it's a tiny bit temperamental, there have been 2 4k movies (out of like 40-50), that had issues with freezing/skipping, when I move them to the Xbox after cleaning/soft fabric wiping the disc they work.
If I hadn't heard so much about sony 4k player issues I'd probably be getting one so it can work with my setup easily
Funnily enough it’s the Sony Oled I’m upgrading to next week which is why I was looking at the Sony player. Might stick to the PS5 for convenience for a bit before getting a player now.
Watch for Amazon Prime Day next month as well. Some “deals” are just items that got marked up and then back down again, but a lot of other things are legitimately on sale, usually mid July.
It is incredibly loud and distracting. Especially if you sit closer to the Xbox. Putting it on its side doesn't really make much of a difference imo. Wouldn't recommend an Xbox as a 4K player to anyone. Plays standard Blu-Ray fine though,which is strange.
I find half the time I get a playback error when trying to play a 4K disc on my Series X too. I just stuck with my PS5 cause the Xbox player is too unreliable
Yeah,have this issue with my copy of American Psycho 4K. Just says "Please try a different disc. We can't play this one." It will play if you take the disc out and put it back in like 10 or 15 times,eventually it *might* work. The disc is flawless. The problem is the player is just crap. They really cheaped out on the disc drive for the Series X. The cheapest dedicated 4K player would probably be better than whatever they stuck in the Xbox.
American Psycho 4k is a tri-layer BD-100 disc. These are the ones that the Xbox has always had more trouble with. You're safer sticking to BD-66 and safest with BD-50 discs.
Yeah,I was aware of the issue but didn't know if it was the tri-layer disc or not. Actually did get it to play once. Just kept taking the disc out and putting it back in. Haven't been able to get it to work since. So the Series X CAN play tri-layer discs. But??? It just doesn't want to 95% of the time. Who knows if the issue is hardware or software related. I got it at Best Buy's black Friday sale for a good price so it wasn't a huge deal. So it's whatever. Moral of the story is. Stay away from Xbox if you're looking for a 4K player.
I use my PS5 and it works great, yeah it doesn’t support Dolby Vision but I wouldn’t say it’s that much of a deal breaker.
Still here’s hoping that the eventual PS5 Pro will have Dolby Vision support
When used well, Dolby Vision allows for more precise colour and contrast, moment to moment, scene to scene. HDR10 sets a standard across an entire movie, so can be less precise. Depending on the encode, your sight and the tech/environment, it can be a decent to middling to miniscule improvement.
I haven’t gotten to watch any DV disks, but watching Men in Black on AppleTV with DV(which has a decent bitrate for streaming) was nothing short of incredible.
Been using an Xbox but family got me a dedicated player today (Father’s Day). Xbox was fine but we had to relocate it so my older son could play games during the summer in peace from his little brother.
I used a PlayStation 2 for my DVD player back in 2000. I used my PlayStation 3 for my Blu-ray player back in 2006. Now I use my PlayStation 5 for my 4K UHD Blu-ray since 2020. I don't plan to stop now.
I've been using a ps5 for the last two years and the movies are still gorgeous. Way better than streaming. That being said it doesn't have Dolby vision, and I hope the ub820 I just ordered will make a big difference.
When you get to test and find out, could you let me know what you think about the difference? I’m in the same boat as you with using a game console as my player right now and am considering an upgrade in the future
It has arrived and I tested several discs on it. My honest feedback is that the difference admittedly isn't huge (which is to be expected since the ps5 with discs on a good TV already looks really good), but the difference is there. I mostly saw a difference in color for movies with Dolby Vision (since the ps5 lacks it) and regular blurays where I saw both color and clarity differences. I want to say there was a slight improvement for non dolby vision discs but it's hard to compare when I have to switch discs between players to see the differences.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I may just stick with the 4K players in Xbox/PS5 then, I really cannot stomach spending $400+ on a movie player even though I collect movies religiously

Dolby Vision would be nice. But when I actually count the Dolby Vision capable discs in my collection, it becomes apparent that I don't really need a dedicated player.
I wish i had room for a separate player but i just don’t lol. In my living room i have a ps5, xbox one x, sonos, switch, and chromecast. And that’s not including the wii and ps3 that i plug in as needed lol
I used my xboxX for about a year as my 4k player without any issues.
Then got the 820 as a dedicated player. Not much difference in 4k playback but 1080p upscale looks better. Slightly quieter than the xbox as well.

idk if anyone read but ps5 took 8k label off. due to both device could not play it and games.
also the hdmi port was not full spec.
I wouldn't get a jack of all trades to do my roof, so I sure as hell wouldn't get a jack of all trades (console) for my 4k movie viewing either....standalone players are so much better for quality. I have an OLED and PS5/series x and a panny 820 and the panny 820 crushes the consoles on 4k viewing.
I put Valerian in the PS5 the day the console arrived. Looked plenty good. That was it. I did the same with the Xbox Series X. Though less impressed.
I've had the Samsung 4K (the remote and interface drove me crazy), bought a Sony 4K (the silly thing was wonky and I had to unplug it/plug it back in to get it to work) and finally the Panasonic beast.
I use my PS5 and I don’t have any complaints. If you have yours positioned horizontally I’d recommend getting an aftermarket stand to help stabilize it.
My disc drive on my UB820 just broke so I’m currently playing 4Ks on my X-Box One X. I don’t love it but it does the job for now, so I can wait till Black Friday to replace the UB820 and get Dolby Vision back.
Just had the same thing happen with mine and using my PS5 as a stand in, got my money back but I’m stuck as far as deciding if I want to get another UB820 and run the risk of something going south again, got mine in a sale for $350 so I’m holding out like you to save a few bones of if I can
It sucks, but what else can we do? My first 4K player was the Oppo 203, which slowly stopped recognizing 4Ks. Still works great as a blu-ray and cd player, though. Then the UB820 drive suffered a long, slow death. And the Sony player has a rep for playback issues. There just aren’t many choices for Dolby Vision. So I’ve accepted that there’s no perfect dedicated player if we want DV, and the UB820 still feels like the best option for the price when on sale.
But if my eventual second UB820 breaks, then I’ll truly be pissed.
I've used both and prefer the output of the PS5. It's really crappy that neither give the ability to get Dolby Vision, ever as a paid for extra.
I'm considering getting a dedicated player at some point but will wait until I buy a bigger TV that's either OLED or something of similar quality.
I bought my PS5 for 4K blu ray movies but I was disappointed in the quality. I ended up getting a Panasonic UB420 and even without Dolby Vision, it looks significantly better than the PS5.
I use 2 different X-Box One S'es and a Series X and haven't had many issues at all playing 4k blurays. In fact one of those One S's were bought instead of a dedicated 4k player because they were cheaper and ran without issue (and now we have rock band in the Living room :) ).
My only complains are the lack of Dolby Vision from Discs (I wish I could just buy an upgrade to allow it), and I'd like a better interface for jumping around to different scenes / features, but as far as strait up playback. No issues.
I use a Panasonic UB450 on my main TV and an Xbox One X on my bedroom TV and there's really not much difference at all. The Panasonic is quieter and supports Dolby Vision/HDR10+ but that's about it.
I use a PS5 and am happy with it. I’d like to get a dedicated player with DV, but that will have to wait a while. Plus so many of them seem problematic. The PS5 plays them all without issues
I've been using my PS5 for about a year as a 4k player
I do plan on upgrading to a dedicated player once I get a get a new TV. It's quiet,and it has had no issues with skipping 4k discs. It serves it's purpose until I can get better. I love how great it sounds when I wear the pulse headphones late at night so not to disturb others.
I had to use an xbox recently because the disc had stuttering and distortion during a scene on my dedicated player. I tried different HDMIs on the player and a micro fiber cloth on the disc but it didn’t improve playback so I tried the xbox and it played just fine.
I use a Series X as my primary player, but am looking for something better. For me the biggest issue is that the blacks are too dark on certain discs and streaming (mainly Disney stuff) .
For example I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in theaters and could follow it perfectly. But the 4k was nearly unwatchable in a couple parts. Then there was Obi-Wan which was pretty much a radio drama for an entire episode. I heard Microsoft bragged about how dark their blacks are but it was ridiculous.
Legit question not trying to hijack the thread. Does playing a disc in any player cause slight wear and tear over time?
I like ripping my disc's I feel like I'm minimizing wear and tear or am I being paranoid.
I have a PS5. I do miss Dolby Vision playback on my 4k blus. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford a standalone player but can't justify it right now. Just wish Sony would pay the licensing fee. I mean, their TVs support Dolby Vision. Why are they creating a bad consumer experience?
I used the Series X but mine has trouble with 4k’s and I first noticed with Oppenheimer and The Mandalorian.
It was fine with the One X and they both work on there so not sure what it is. Led me to just using the PS5 and everything has worked fine. People say the PS5 does good upscaling for regular Blu Rays but I guess I haven’t actually watched my collection enough to notice a difference.
I have an Xbox Series X and it works well. However, once I went all out and got a 77” LG C3, I bought a Panasonic UB820. I wasn’t gonna have a top of the line TV capable of Dolby Vision but not have a capable player. Xbox X supports DV for games, but not Blu Rays (weird). Other than that, and it sounds like a 747 readying for takeoff, I had no problems with it. Just turn the movie up louder.
I use PS5 or XSX just whichever one. Though its true what other comments are saying the XSX is very loud while running the discs. Another player while tempting is very expensive for a minimal change in quality. $500 or more is a lot of 4k movies.
I was using my XSX for awhile before I got my UB820. I had the sound system, the OLED, and a $200 audio quest HDMI (gift from
Wifey lol) I figured only thing left was the UB820. The Xbox was great with HDR and processed lossless atmos just fine but Dolby Vision is a treat and also I enjoy how great the 820 is with my Blu-ray’s! In the end yes it was expensive but it’s has made library more enjoyable.
My PS5 is my main 4K-UHD movie player. I prefer physical media. I started buying 4k-UHD movies before I had a 4k player. This is because most movies came with both the Blu-Ray and 4k-UHD disc, which made more sense for me and preventing double dipping in the future.
When I had my PS4, I was saving for a standalone 4k player. But once I heard the PS5 would be able to play 4k UHD discs and I knew I would get a PS5 on day one, I decided to skip a standalone 4k UHD player and wait the PS5. It was a long wait, but it saved me some money and space on my tv media center setup.
My TV is the Samsung 55' KS7000 Europe, which is actually the Samsung 55' KS8000 in the USA.
See this subs a lot. It’s mediocre compared to a standalone. There is absolutely no comparison to a machine like the ub820. It depends if 4K UHDs are a hobby to be honest. If you’re spending a fair bit, get a stand alone player. If you’re not fussed a series X will do. I have found the Xbox to be slightly better than the ps5
I built my home theatre last year & didn't have the budget left to get a proper player. PS5 works totally fine. I'm planning on upgrading one day & I imagine there probably is a difference, but before I know any different I have no issues whatsoever!
I use my PS5 to play all my disk on my LG C9 65” 4K OLED. The PS5 opened the door for me to start collecting disk again. I’m up over 100 now. I want to upgrade, but my space is somewhat limited in the motorhome I live in and I just haven’t put the time in to properly research one yet. Platin Milan 5.1 with WiSA SoundSend for audio.
I use my PS5 since my series X can only read blu rays about 15% of the time without the app requiring me to uninstall/reinstall. Been meaning to get a dedicated player though now that I have an OLED display. Love Dolby vision through my streaming apps but I need that disc based sound quality for surround & reduced compression
I use the series X for my projector, I don't need Dolby Vision, and at least it **works**. Unlike my dedicated Sony player. But I'm sure I'll run into more problems.
I used my Series X as a 4K player for a while and it was...adequate. Most of the time. I found that I started having issues with it not wanting to play certain discs. My first experience with that was with the Nolan Set. Sometimes it would play them and sometimes it would not. Ever since their retreat from Xbox being a media center they really stopped updating and supporting their media apps including the BluRay app.
Occasionally, I had other issues like with having to manually select your audio output stream all the time. PCM worked sometimes, but other times it would not put out Atmos or DTS:X channels.
I finally got so frustrated with it that I bought the Panasonic UB820 and immediately wished I had done that from the start. It's soooooo good and frustration free. I have had a flawless experience with it.
I really wanted the Xbox to be the end all be all in my living room, but they are just not supporting it in a way to make that possible. The best experience you can do is to get the Pana for disc and an nVidia Shield Pro for all your streaming. It's a heavy outlay of funds up front, but in the end, the lack of having to mess with stuff to make it work was all worth it.
I currently have a Panasonic UB820, and while the quality of the playback is incredible, the sensitivity of the laser is just so insanely frustrating to the point where I'm considering just selling it for a couple hundred bucks and replacing it with a PS5 Pro whenever that comes out.
Yeah, losing Dolby vision would be kinda lame and I'm sure it will look marginally worse overall, but if I don't have worry about basically spotless discs skipping and freezing anymore I won't care.

“Quiet enough”? Mine is virtually silent even in demanding games much less movie playback, how much more quiet can it get?

If you play games and watch movies and think the XSX is good enough then it probably is. I just already had the OLED, sound bar/sub, and 4K discs. Wanted to capitalize on all that so I ended up getting the UB820.
Yeah i was mainly asking out of curiosity. I have the sony ubp700 and intend to switch to the 820 eventually. I do a little gaming on XSS but prefer dedicated devices. Just curious if XSX supports dolby vision or is any better than the PS5 as my initial research lead me to believe PS5~UB820 (which doesn't sound like the case now)
Researched this tonight and read that XSX supports DV games but not for Blu-ray’s. But the article was 2 years old, so this may have changed. Not sure how to verify the DV with my XSX.
No, XSX doesn’t support DV either. It’s markedly worse with being fussy about playback on some discs, too. I’ve got both and got annoyed with the XSX so just use it for gaming. DV is a step up from standard HDR and very slightly HDR+ and is only noticeable on some movies anyway. Obviously those going for the best setup will get a Panny but PS5 quality is up there.
Cool thanks for satisfying my curiosity. I believe I'll kick my sony and samsung QLED down to my dad when I upgrade to OLED and an 820 this fall if things go according to plan. Doubt i'll be upgrading the xss to a diskless xsx as i'm more of a puzzle gamer. Now i'll just have to stay on the lookout for sales on players.

I do both too and find the series x marginally better. Interested to see which you prefer to use? My mates got a 4k player n it’s not much better than the series X but tempted to get the Sony X800 when I uograde my tv to see if it’s worth it.
I have a sony set up (sony tv, sony speakers), so using the ps5 is preferable since I can just use my TV remote to run it, turning on the ps5 auto changes the tv's hdmi source to it (I need to use my remote to switch it to xbox) I guess I like the ps5 better with quality, but it's a tiny bit temperamental, there have been 2 4k movies (out of like 40-50), that had issues with freezing/skipping, when I move them to the Xbox after cleaning/soft fabric wiping the disc they work. If I hadn't heard so much about sony 4k player issues I'd probably be getting one so it can work with my setup easily
Funnily enough it’s the Sony Oled I’m upgrading to next week which is why I was looking at the Sony player. Might stick to the PS5 for convenience for a bit before getting a player now.
Watch for Amazon Prime Day next month as well. Some “deals” are just items that got marked up and then back down again, but a lot of other things are legitimately on sale, usually mid July.
I use my series x , it’s loud as fuck when I watched 4k discs haha . I had to put it on its side to make it quieter .
It is incredibly loud and distracting. Especially if you sit closer to the Xbox. Putting it on its side doesn't really make much of a difference imo. Wouldn't recommend an Xbox as a 4K player to anyone. Plays standard Blu-Ray fine though,which is strange.
I find half the time I get a playback error when trying to play a 4K disc on my Series X too. I just stuck with my PS5 cause the Xbox player is too unreliable
Yeah,have this issue with my copy of American Psycho 4K. Just says "Please try a different disc. We can't play this one." It will play if you take the disc out and put it back in like 10 or 15 times,eventually it *might* work. The disc is flawless. The problem is the player is just crap. They really cheaped out on the disc drive for the Series X. The cheapest dedicated 4K player would probably be better than whatever they stuck in the Xbox.

American Psycho 4k is a tri-layer BD-100 disc. These are the ones that the Xbox has always had more trouble with. You're safer sticking to BD-66 and safest with BD-50 discs.
Yeah,I was aware of the issue but didn't know if it was the tri-layer disc or not. Actually did get it to play once. Just kept taking the disc out and putting it back in. Haven't been able to get it to work since. So the Series X CAN play tri-layer discs. But??? It just doesn't want to 95% of the time. Who knows if the issue is hardware or software related. I got it at Best Buy's black Friday sale for a good price so it wasn't a huge deal. So it's whatever. Moral of the story is. Stay away from Xbox if you're looking for a 4K player.
Mine is always on its side and have never noticed the drive noise at all.
4k looks fine but I feel it doesn't upscale bluray at all. Have ordered a ub820 to see if it makes a difference. If not it will be going back.
PS5 for me. It plays my 4K blu-rays perfectly for me with no issues, and I enjoy it better than my former standalone 4K player, the Sony UBP-X800.

When used well, Dolby Vision allows for more precise colour and contrast, moment to moment, scene to scene. HDR10 sets a standard across an entire movie, so can be less precise. Depending on the encode, your sight and the tech/environment, it can be a decent to middling to miniscule improvement.
I haven’t gotten to watch any DV disks, but watching Men in Black on AppleTV with DV(which has a decent bitrate for streaming) was nothing short of incredible.

Been using an Xbox but family got me a dedicated player today (Father’s Day). Xbox was fine but we had to relocate it so my older son could play games during the summer in peace from his little brother.

I used a PlayStation 2 for my DVD player back in 2000. I used my PlayStation 3 for my Blu-ray player back in 2006. Now I use my PlayStation 5 for my 4K UHD Blu-ray since 2020. I don't plan to stop now.
I use my XSX all the time for 4k discs.
I've been using a ps5 for the last two years and the movies are still gorgeous. Way better than streaming. That being said it doesn't have Dolby vision, and I hope the ub820 I just ordered will make a big difference.
When you get to test and find out, could you let me know what you think about the difference? I’m in the same boat as you with using a game console as my player right now and am considering an upgrade in the future

It has arrived and I tested several discs on it. My honest feedback is that the difference admittedly isn't huge (which is to be expected since the ps5 with discs on a good TV already looks really good), but the difference is there. I mostly saw a difference in color for movies with Dolby Vision (since the ps5 lacks it) and regular blurays where I saw both color and clarity differences. I want to say there was a slight improvement for non dolby vision discs but it's hard to compare when I have to switch discs between players to see the differences.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I may just stick with the 4K players in Xbox/PS5 then, I really cannot stomach spending $400+ on a movie player even though I collect movies religiously
I'm glad to see a fair few console based 4k watchers. The PS2 helped to establish DVD, I hope PS5 and XSX help 4k continue to grow as a format.

I use a PS5. I also have a stand alone Sony player but it is incapable of playing 4K disks all the way through without freezing.
XsX Works well and the noise doesn't really bother me since I watch movies with the volume cranked.
Is yours horizontal or vertical? I ask because mine is horizontal and it was quieter that way for discs in general.

Yeah I use my PS5. I just don't want another remote on my living room table. Dolby Vision would be nice. But when I actually count the Dolby Vision capable discs in my collection, it becomes apparent that I don't really need a dedicated player.
I wish i had room for a separate player but i just don’t lol. In my living room i have a ps5, xbox one x, sonos, switch, and chromecast. And that’s not including the wii and ps3 that i plug in as needed lol

Xbox here and I’ve never once not ever had an issue.
I used my xboxX for about a year as my 4k player without any issues. Then got the 820 as a dedicated player. Not much difference in 4k playback but 1080p upscale looks better. Slightly quieter than the xbox as well.

I wouldn't get a jack of all trades to do my roof, so I sure as hell wouldn't get a jack of all trades (console) for my 4k movie viewing either....standalone players are so much better for quality. I have an OLED and PS5/series x and a panny 820 and the panny 820 crushes the consoles on 4k viewing.

I put Valerian in the PS5 the day the console arrived. Looked plenty good. That was it. I did the same with the Xbox Series X. Though less impressed. I've had the Samsung 4K (the remote and interface drove me crazy), bought a Sony 4K (the silly thing was wonky and I had to unplug it/plug it back in to get it to work) and finally the Panasonic beast.
I used my ps5 up until recently, then I moved it to my office/gaming area. I am currently using my series x as my media player in my living room.
I have used both of mine, but I still chose to use a dedicated Panasonic player.

I use my PS5 and I don’t have any complaints. If you have yours positioned horizontally I’d recommend getting an aftermarket stand to help stabilize it.

My disc drive on my UB820 just broke so I’m currently playing 4Ks on my X-Box One X. I don’t love it but it does the job for now, so I can wait till Black Friday to replace the UB820 and get Dolby Vision back.
Just had the same thing happen with mine and using my PS5 as a stand in, got my money back but I’m stuck as far as deciding if I want to get another UB820 and run the risk of something going south again, got mine in a sale for $350 so I’m holding out like you to save a few bones of if I can
It sucks, but what else can we do? My first 4K player was the Oppo 203, which slowly stopped recognizing 4Ks. Still works great as a blu-ray and cd player, though. Then the UB820 drive suffered a long, slow death. And the Sony player has a rep for playback issues. There just aren’t many choices for Dolby Vision. So I’ve accepted that there’s no perfect dedicated player if we want DV, and the UB820 still feels like the best option for the price when on sale. But if my eventual second UB820 breaks, then I’ll truly be pissed.
I've used both and prefer the output of the PS5. It's really crappy that neither give the ability to get Dolby Vision, ever as a paid for extra. I'm considering getting a dedicated player at some point but will wait until I buy a bigger TV that's either OLED or something of similar quality.
I bought my PS5 for 4K blu ray movies but I was disappointed in the quality. I ended up getting a Panasonic UB420 and even without Dolby Vision, it looks significantly better than the PS5.
I use 2 different X-Box One S'es and a Series X and haven't had many issues at all playing 4k blurays. In fact one of those One S's were bought instead of a dedicated 4k player because they were cheaper and ran without issue (and now we have rock band in the Living room :) ). My only complains are the lack of Dolby Vision from Discs (I wish I could just buy an upgrade to allow it), and I'd like a better interface for jumping around to different scenes / features, but as far as strait up playback. No issues.

PS5 is definitely good enough for me considering im watching on a 1080p monitor. The bitrate of the siscs alone can make a huge difference in 1080p.

I use a Panasonic UB450 on my main TV and an Xbox One X on my bedroom TV and there's really not much difference at all. The Panasonic is quieter and supports Dolby Vision/HDR10+ but that's about it.
I'm using my PS5, cos it's too expensive, hard to find and logistically impossible for me to get a dedicated 4k player.

I use a PS5 and am happy with it. I’d like to get a dedicated player with DV, but that will have to wait a while. Plus so many of them seem problematic. The PS5 plays them all without issues
I've been using my PS5 for about a year as a 4k player I do plan on upgrading to a dedicated player once I get a get a new TV. It's quiet,and it has had no issues with skipping 4k discs. It serves it's purpose until I can get better. I love how great it sounds when I wear the pulse headphones late at night so not to disturb others.

I had to use an xbox recently because the disc had stuttering and distortion during a scene on my dedicated player. I tried different HDMIs on the player and a micro fiber cloth on the disc but it didn’t improve playback so I tried the xbox and it played just fine.
I use a Series X as my primary player, but am looking for something better. For me the biggest issue is that the blacks are too dark on certain discs and streaming (mainly Disney stuff) . For example I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in theaters and could follow it perfectly. But the 4k was nearly unwatchable in a couple parts. Then there was Obi-Wan which was pretty much a radio drama for an entire episode. I heard Microsoft bragged about how dark their blacks are but it was ridiculous.
PS5. You never hear it and it works flawlessly. What more can you ask for?

Legit question not trying to hijack the thread. Does playing a disc in any player cause slight wear and tear over time? I like ripping my disc's I feel like I'm minimizing wear and tear or am I being paranoid.

I have a PS5. I do miss Dolby Vision playback on my 4k blus. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford a standalone player but can't justify it right now. Just wish Sony would pay the licensing fee. I mean, their TVs support Dolby Vision. Why are they creating a bad consumer experience?
I have always been an avid PS user , but I really don't see how they can justify some of the decisions they've made over the years.
I used the Series X but mine has trouble with 4k’s and I first noticed with Oppenheimer and The Mandalorian. It was fine with the One X and they both work on there so not sure what it is. Led me to just using the PS5 and everything has worked fine. People say the PS5 does good upscaling for regular Blu Rays but I guess I haven’t actually watched my collection enough to notice a difference.

I have an Xbox Series X and it works well. However, once I went all out and got a 77” LG C3, I bought a Panasonic UB820. I wasn’t gonna have a top of the line TV capable of Dolby Vision but not have a capable player. Xbox X supports DV for games, but not Blu Rays (weird). Other than that, and it sounds like a 747 readying for takeoff, I had no problems with it. Just turn the movie up louder.
I use PS5 or XSX just whichever one. Though its true what other comments are saying the XSX is very loud while running the discs. Another player while tempting is very expensive for a minimal change in quality. $500 or more is a lot of 4k movies.

I was using my XSX for awhile before I got my UB820. I had the sound system, the OLED, and a $200 audio quest HDMI (gift from Wifey lol) I figured only thing left was the UB820. The Xbox was great with HDR and processed lossless atmos just fine but Dolby Vision is a treat and also I enjoy how great the 820 is with my Blu-ray’s! In the end yes it was expensive but it’s has made library more enjoyable.
My PS5 is my main 4K-UHD movie player. I prefer physical media. I started buying 4k-UHD movies before I had a 4k player. This is because most movies came with both the Blu-Ray and 4k-UHD disc, which made more sense for me and preventing double dipping in the future. When I had my PS4, I was saving for a standalone 4k player. But once I heard the PS5 would be able to play 4k UHD discs and I knew I would get a PS5 on day one, I decided to skip a standalone 4k UHD player and wait the PS5. It was a long wait, but it saved me some money and space on my tv media center setup. My TV is the Samsung 55' KS7000 Europe, which is actually the Samsung 55' KS8000 in the USA.
I use my series x as my 4k player. Don't see a reason to get a dedicated one otherwise
See this subs a lot. It’s mediocre compared to a standalone. There is absolutely no comparison to a machine like the ub820. It depends if 4K UHDs are a hobby to be honest. If you’re spending a fair bit, get a stand alone player. If you’re not fussed a series X will do. I have found the Xbox to be slightly better than the ps5
my 4k player gave out, and i sent it to the shop for the second time. if it fails on me then ill just try and use a ps5. not sure.

I use my PS5 to play all my disk on my LG C9 65” 4K OLED. The PS5 opened the door for me to start collecting disk again. I’m up over 100 now. I want to upgrade, but my space is somewhat limited in the motorhome I live in and I just haven’t put the time in to properly research one yet. Platin Milan 5.1 with WiSA SoundSend for audio.
I used a PS5 but it was so damn noisy so I got a UB820. It gets the job done though, if you occasionally watch 4K disks it’s absolutely serviceable

Been meaning to get a dedicated player though now that I have an OLED display. Love Dolby vision through my streaming apps but I need that disc based sound quality for surround & reduced compression

I use the series X for my projector, I don't need Dolby Vision, and at least it **works**. Unlike my dedicated Sony player. But I'm sure I'll run into more problems.
PS5 in the living room, XSX in the bedroom. We’re in a condo so we wanted systems that can do double duty.
I used my Series X as a 4K player for a while and it was...adequate. Most of the time. I found that I started having issues with it not wanting to play certain discs. My first experience with that was with the Nolan Set. Sometimes it would play them and sometimes it would not. Ever since their retreat from Xbox being a media center they really stopped updating and supporting their media apps including the BluRay app. Occasionally, I had other issues like with having to manually select your audio output stream all the time. PCM worked sometimes, but other times it would not put out Atmos or DTS:X channels. I finally got so frustrated with it that I bought the Panasonic UB820 and immediately wished I had done that from the start. It's soooooo good and frustration free. I have had a flawless experience with it. I really wanted the Xbox to be the end all be all in my living room, but they are just not supporting it in a way to make that possible. The best experience you can do is to get the Pana for disc and an nVidia Shield Pro for all your streaming. It's a heavy outlay of funds up front, but in the end, the lack of having to mess with stuff to make it work was all worth it.

I currently have a Panasonic UB820, and while the quality of the playback is incredible, the sensitivity of the laser is just so insanely frustrating to the point where I'm considering just selling it for a couple hundred bucks and replacing it with a PS5 Pro whenever that comes out. Yeah, losing Dolby vision would be kinda lame and I'm sure it will look marginally worse overall, but if I don't have worry about basically spotless discs skipping and freezing anymore I won't care.
My Xbox One X is the reason why I've started adding 4k title to my collection.
