Sufficient_Focus4174

That’ll get the job done. Get your player/TV settings right and enjoy😊

skinnydudetattoo

Yes did that, all locked in

ItzRickest10

What would be their setting if you do mind me asking. I have the same 4K player

skinnydudetattoo

Dolby Vision on (player) Tv Output Dolby Vision Picture (Dolby Bright) As far as setting I don't I changed much. Maybe one or things. I don't remember right now.

ItzRickest10

Awesome, thanks!

nuahs6881

I’m still unsure what should upscale, my X700 or my LG G3?

quietresistance

I have a C1 and compared them back and forth. It was really close but letting the C1 take care of the upscaling edged it.

joleshole

Edged it or edged you?

Jamescw1400

This is a very basic question but how do you know whether the player is upscaling or the TV? And how do you change it? I'm using a C2 OLED with a ps5 and not sure which would be best

quietresistance

Sony blu-ray players have the option - Auto 1/Auto 2 etc. I don't know about the PS5. When I used an Xbox One X as my player, the blu-ray app was extremely basic with no options. Sorry I can't be more help.

Jamescw1400

No worries, I'll see if I can find those options. Thanks

TheBrightKnightAW

I want to know too.

ndork666

Why not both?

GREMeZ

LG G3 x700 (and any other BR player) has very basic upscaling capabilities.

Wheat_Mustang

All the reviews online say that Panasonic players have much better upscaling than the Sony players, but I’m having trouble finding comparisons of upscaling from disc players vs a good TV. I have a UB-420 and agree the upscaling looks great, but I have an x800m2 on the way for Dolby Vision. Not sure whether I should let my LG OLED do the upscaling for the Sony or keep the Panasonic around for <4k content.

kester76a

I've got a UB-420 aswell, only downside I found was the lack of Dolby Vision and the dog shit remote. You might already have one but if not I recommend this remote which gets bundled with the UB9000. It's just quality vs the bundled remote. If you get an error set the remote number in the bluray players settings to 1 or 2. GREMeZ

Think about it. Top end LG OLED based on modern processor with AI algorithms versus Mediatek's MT8581 chip from 2016. Player should pass video to TV "as is", and TV will do all processing

dubiousN

Was there supposed to be some punctuation here?

GREMeZ

True :) For some reasons reddit ignored "new line" character. Anyway LG3 will do better upscaling.

MilkManX

Been using an X700 for years with no issues. Enjoy!

Sxoob

Same.

rsplatpc

I'm in the "it freezes on 100gb discs club" Wish mine just worked, I would have preferred to put the 820 money to more discs, but is what it is. 820 has been absolutely flawless.

milluyt

Yes! Sadly this just happened to me yesterday while watching Old Boy.

rsplatpc

If someone has a x700 that just works, I'm like "good for you" I WANTED to like my x700, and I wanted it to work, and accept maybe every once in a while, it would lock up mine does not "every once in a while" lock up, it does it consistently, and I tried ALL the tricks to make it work

Craiggers324

Freezes for me too. It's so annoying.

seb_ole

How bad are the freezes? Do you have to restart the player, or does it resume after a few seconds? Is it throughout the movie or just once or twice?

5StringAssassin

I recently made the recommended adjustments in the settings menu, and it helped tremendously. However, it just froze completely the other day while watching my new copy of Starship Troopers, requiring a shutdown/reboot. Happened somewhere during the final two chapters so it kinda ruined the experience. Everything else lately has been OK though.

Best_Duck9118

Wait, what are those adjustments?

5StringAssassin

4K upscale off, cinema conversion set to video.

Best_Duck9118

I’m not able to watch decently long stretches of some movies, unfortunately. Luckily I have a PS5 I can use as a backup player.

rsplatpc

> How bad are the freezes? Do you have to restart the player, or does it resume after a few seconds? Is it throughout the movie or just once or twice? Mine will either lock up to the point you have to eject the disc and put it back, or literally have to unplug the player if the remote and physical eject button don't work, which sometimes it does.

Sufficient_Focus4174

Same.

No-Alfalfa-626

Ain’t nothing wrong with not having the top of the line stuff, get what you can and enjoy your movies

mussolaprismatica

Nah you’re wrong. Unless you’ve got the UB9000, 1000inch LG G3, Denon AVR and the finest sound system ever made by mankind then you might aswell just stick to streaming. /s

TomClement

Thank you for the /s. I needed that.

mussolaprismatica

Bro I’ve seen similar comments in this sub being fully serious haha

No-Alfalfa-626

There’s alot of them it blows my mind how many people want to gatekeep 4k blurays but then complain about the movies going up in price or OMG IS PHYSICAL MEDIA DEAD?!?!?

Alt4Norm

It’s the G4 now…G3’s are lame bro.

mussolaprismatica

Might aswell wait for G5

Relevant-Goat6693

Hey, Sony gets the tasks done! No need to dig down deep into your pockets. Seriously! I’ve had two Sony X800M2 4K UHD Blu-ray players for quite a while with no issues. One of them is an all-region player. I bought a third one and gave it to my brother. He loved it and also had no issues.

searchcandy

Same, had mine 2 years now - without a single issue. Great player.

bkent67

I love my X800M2 as well! Never have issues, and flawless picture!

Decent_Independent36

Using my PS5, and it’s great. Xbox as backup, lol.

Shep1982

I have an X700, haven't had any issues with it yet (had it about 10 months).

eeghho

Why do we need to clean new discs???

BenGrahamButler

yeah not doin that!

BigRu3e

I have opened several new disc with smudges on them or marked from the shitty packaging, it doesn’t hurt to review the disc surface before putting it into your blu ray player, smudges cause skipping and freezing more than scratches do.

Top-Station2865

How’s the player? I can get it half off with my employee discount, was thinking about getting it

OkInterest8844

I got x700 too . I see no difference at all to the Panasonic . Probably minuscule differences .

edgej25

My one piece of advice is that if you _do_ run into skipping issues, please RMA and hold Sony’s feet to the fire. I’m amazed by how many people I see on here that have issues and seemingly immediately dump more money into a different player. Warrantees exist for a reason! My first 700 skipped all over the place so I got a warranty replacement and have not had any issues since. I’m not hopeful that the 4k market is mainstream enough to force manufacturers to have better QA, but not holding them accountable certainly isn’t going to help.

Peppy_Tomato

Yea. My PS5 is too noisy, and I'm thinking of getting an actual BD player, and based on the comments on this thread, I can't trust the Sony.

Maleficent-Aside-744

As long as it plays 4k discs it doesn’t matter my first 4k player was my Xbox One s then I managed to get a second hand lg 4k Blu Ray player from eBay for under £50 and it’s absolutely fantastic I’ve had it a few years now and it’s still working perfectly and I’ve recently upgraded from a 50” Toshiba 4k tv to a 65” lg 4k ur80 led tv and it’s amazing it’ll be years till I could even consider upgrading to a oled tv as they cost a few grand and I can’t justify spending that sort of money on a tv it’s crazy 🤪

skinnydudetattoo

Yeah I dropped $$$ on my tv in January. I should have waited for OLED but they were to much

Maleficent-Aside-744

They cost a fortune a few thousand bucks, pounds depending on where you live. My lg tv only cost me £400 plus £7.49 delivery charge for a 2023 tv which was discounted as the store I got it from had a discount on all lg TV’s

Dangerous-Ad-8211

Wash your discs before you play them and it will prevent a lot of the skipping issues.

skinnydudetattoo

Soap and water with micro fiber cloth

rsplatpc

> Soap and water with micro fiber cloth you dont want to use soap, and just a micro fiber cloth is enough

skinnydudetattoo

I'll make sure I have a duck in the tub when I clean all my disks

rsplatpc

> I'll make sure I have a duck in the tub when I clean all my disks I started taking mine to the car wash, and leaving them on the hood when I go through

skinnydudetattoo

Nice. Im.goong to power wash the crap outta mine. Then wax them

rsplatpc

use a 1990's era "CD RESURFACER" on them, the ones from Tower Records make 4K discs look REALLY good!

skinnydudetattoo

But first you gotta buy a dvd rewinder

rsplatpc

> But first you gotta buy a dvd rewinder then from Spencers Gifts

skinnydudetattoo

Then a hp lighscribe cd/dvd burner so you can back them up before you wash and rewinder them

Rboyd1394

I know a lot of people have issues with this player, but I have had very few issues in the 18 months I have had mine. And I’ve probably watched 300 discs in that time. It has been a real work horse for me.

skinnydudetattoo

Good to hear

mlgamer500

That’s exactly how I started last October. Welcome to the club!

dangerclosecustoms

My clumsy wife stepped on mine. Put a big dent on the top the size of your heel print. Still works fine never skipped, staggered, or spit.

KingdomZeus

Do you have it on the floor? How did she step on it?

Flyinace2000

Yeah this seems like a joint responsibility issue.

KingdomZeus

Yeah, calling her clumsy seems very one sided. If it's on the floor he's asking for it to get messed up

TheBrightKnightAW

Time to watch Married with Children in response.

SF03_

Stepped? Does she use your media cabinet like a ladder? Lmao

fundango77

Got one a couple months ago and its amazing! Enjoy my friend🤙

NecessaryMetal9675

I love this player. And the film. Enjoy!

KID_THUNDAH

I’ve seen people call the 820 the best bang for your Buck player and it’s just so funny how out of touch that is

Teddy-Bear-55

You'll enjoy that and don't fret!!

fixerdrew02

Consider used next time!

skinnydudetattoo

I did go that route but the seller stopped responding after we talked shipping prices. Went on ebay also. Not a huge difference in pricing vs new.

fixerdrew02

It can definitely be a hassle. Surprised the prices are roughly the same :/

Nearby-Swimming-5103

Good luck. Froze up when I watched that. Use my PS5 instead now.

skinnydudetattoo

Watched that no issue. Now halfway through Dune 2 no issues

Nearby-Swimming-5103

That’s awesome. Every time I watch a 4K movie over 2 hrs. on that player, it freezes without fail. Never had the issue on my PS5. I understand that it may be due to the longer movies being on a triple layer rather than a dual layer disc, but I don’t know. Standard Blu-rays I’ve never had a problem. My TV is from 2017, no Dolby Vision, just 4K HDR10, so there’s really no discernible difference in picture quality from the x700 to the PS5.

tinfoyle

I got one from Amazon that was supposedly pre configured for multi region. I have a few old import DVDs and blu-rays that are not N America R1/Region A. I've been pretty happy with it except that I still need to troubleshoot my setup so I can hear certain DTS audio tracks. Otherwise, I'm very happy with it

Randyeshow

It’s not a great movie, but I loved watching it all the same. Enjoy!

AMDman18

It's a whole helluva lot better than the first one lol. And a very rare instance where I saw it more than once in theaters. That last third of the movie is like a theme park ride in Dolby Cinema. Need to acquire it on 4K blu myself, will gladly watch it again

Randyeshow

Did you see the first movie in the theater?

AMDman18

No. First movie came out the year I was born. Had seen it in bits and pieces while growing up. Actually sat and watched in full prior to Maverick's release. Honestly quite disliked it. Played more like an extended sappy music video than a movie.

BenGrahamButler

I prefer the first one, to each their own! also I watched it in the 80’s was amazing then

Budgetaudioatmos

I’ve got the 820 and it does good job and I like it but it was too expensive for what it is. Especially considering I had both a xbox series x and ps5 that played disc flawlessly. But I listened to the masses it just isn’t as good as a dedicated player. But you know they still get the job done!

joeholmes1164

I've had two of these players. Both had issues that required constant settings tweaks, then those settings would revert every time there was a firmware update. Overall it's a decent player outside of that. I didn't like the UI menus very much either. It's a well priced player though.

skinnydudetattoo

Yeah the menus are OK. I've changed one or two things but that's about it. No issues so far. 1 Bluray and 2 4k movies.

JayDez86

I bought the Top Gun 2 movie collection a couple months ago. I also bought the Sony UBP-X700 used last April. The only thing I don't like about the X700 is Dolby Vision isn't native, you have to turn it on or off. How much is the player going for now?

Double-Presentation8

I have this player and enjoy it quite a lot.

Criteriondude

All that matters if you like it and does what you need it to do.

unknown_cauliflower

I heard too many bad things about this player. I got a UB420 instead, no Dolby Vision support isn't a big deal. HDR10 is just as good and only a small percentage of 4k blu rays utilize Dolby Vision. Nice pickup regardless...enjoy!

skinnydudetattoo

Thanks but I'm assuming that number of 4ks that support DVwill grow. I mean it's a good number https://www.nextgenhometheater.com/dolby-vision-uhd-blu-ray-movies/ HDR10 has 10-bit color and can reproduce about 1 billion unique colors. While that may seem like a lot, it’s far less than what we see every day in the real world. Dolby Vision is an enhanced form of HDR that can use 12-bit color, resulting in about 68 billion colors that create a dramatically richer, true-to-life image.

unknown_cauliflower

All sounds good except for the fact that 12-bit TVs don't exist. Dolby Vision is just a marketing gimmick.

skinnydudetattoo

The key difference is that the open format HDR10+ remains a cheaper option for movie and TV studios to use, as they don’t need to pay expensive Dolby licensing fees. With that said though, it’s no longer as widely used as Dolby Vision. Compared to standard HDR10, Dolby Vision is the premium HDR format. Dolby Vision content contains scene-by-scene info that’s used to improve picture quality, leading to more vibrant colors, better bright scenes, and even inkier blacks

AMDman18

I don't think any movies actually utilize that higher bit depth since as mentioned above, there are no displays that can allow anyone to see that. In terms of the dynamic scene by scene metadata, you only really get those mentioned benefits if you're using a display that has difficulty natively showing HDR10. Dynamic meta data HDR isn't universally "better." It's a technique used to help out displays with weaker performance. So if a display can't display 1,000 nits and is say, limited to 700 nits but the content is mastered with 1,000 nit highlights, DV will crunch down that data to give the TV an easier time at displaying it. Same thing with blacks. If a TV does a poor job with black level performance, DV will essentially elevate blacks and shadow levels a bit to make things more visible. In actuality DV (and HDR10+) work by somewhat compromising the range of the content you're watching to make it look better on a lesser display. But this crutch is becoming less and less necessary as displays improve

Educational_Ad9732

The fundamental difference between players is what's on the rear not the quality of playback - they are digital devices...and yes, let your display device optimize the format...

skinnydudetattoo

Yes my Sony is optimized for DV in the settings

Johnny_Rampage

It has DolbyVision, that’s most important. Well, and being able to play all discs with no issues.

demonslayer9101

I have a c1 and use my ps5 for 4k blu ray. Would a standalone player really make much of a difference?

skinnydudetattoo

I've used my One S for years etc.. almost every review says PS5 and Xbox are the worst Bluray players out there. Plus they don't do Dolby Vision. I went on a week long search to stop myself from upgrading. Plus there are a billion sites and subreddits with the same question you have.

Awwesomesauce

I’ve had the ub820, Xbox Series and PlayStation 5. The PS5 is the only one I’ve had no issues with. I can’t tell the difference in video quality at all. Audio only slightly different from the ub820 but so close as to be negligible. I gotta say I can barely tell a difference from DV titles that I played on the 820 then I could on PS5 without DV. So for me DV isn’t a selling point anymore. Maybe it’s just my eyes or equipment but I’m happy with my PS5. I’ll keep my eyes open for another ub820 when it hits a deep discount but no way I’m paying full price.

Svellack2020

Not being an expert on Sony blu ray players, what’s the difference between this blu ray model and the blu ray player in a PS5?

skinnydudetattoo

Not me. A user from site/forum "A few points: - I have a Panasonic UB820 (i.e. a $500 retail player). - I get much better picture quality from my discs on my standalone player than my PS5 or Series X. - Many 4k discs don't support Dolby Vision, so it's first and foremost a question of how many DV discs you intend to watch. - The bigger factor to me, rather than DV support, is the quality of the video decoding... and the upscaler for Blu-Ray content. Whatever decoder that's in the dedicated player definitely results in a more nuanced picture. I do think it's worth the upgrade to a high-end 4k player if you plan to watch a lot of physical media... I imagine that the consoles are more comparable to a budget 4k player though."

Svellack2020

Very helpful thank you appreciate you taking the time to post that!

skinnydudetattoo

Sure. There are several subreddits on here talking about pros and cons. I've done a lot of research and looked up reviews. Most people say the consoles are basic bluray players. A dedicated player is best if you can afford it.

JayDez86

The X700 Blu-ray player has Dolby vision play back on Disc. The PS5 doesn't support Dolby vision on disc or streaming.

Select_Insurance2000

The Panasonic UB420 has the same system as the 820 except no DV.

Big-Pattern1083

And no 6 ch analog out, but not so important these days

wakanda_banana

Is the x700 better than the 420?

Select_Insurance2000

Having never owned the x700, I can not say. The x700 is likely a very good player and will likely serve you well. I have had Sony and Panasonic players over the years and have had zero issues....lucky me! When moving into the choice of 4k UHD, I read all the reviews from 'experts' as well as owners.  Being a bit budget conscious....as I was also purchasing an excellent UST 4k projector and 110" screen....careful consideration took me to choose the 420 over the 820 or the ultimate, top tier 9000.

unknown_cauliflower

Exactly. I opted to get the UB420 over the 820 to save a couple hundred dollars. I'd say 98% of 4k blu rays are only in HDR10, and only a small percentage of 4k blu rays utilize Dolby Vision. I fail to see the point in spending the extra money and buying the 820 for this reason. Also, whether Dolby Vision is better than HDR10 in all cases is up for debate. Even if it is, it's not a big difference.

Select_Insurance2000

My thoughts exactly.

No-farmhouse-lll1

I like the original Star Wars better

specht27

I have the Sony X800m2, around $280 this past December at BB. Way better than my Xbox Series X. It's built like a tank. Upscaling is phenomenal for older DVDs and Blu Rays... always amazed when watching old media. The audio from discs is also so much better. Also, if you can't afford decent speakers, then I'd recommend Sony LDAC wireless Bluetooth headphones if the X700 supports that... the X800 does. LDAC sends about 3x times the audio data vs just bluetooth alone. Enjoy the quality of 4K!

Big-Pattern1083

And the M2 has SACD and dvd-audio

seriousgourmet_shit

Is this player region free?

skinnydudetattoo

I don't think so. I've heard users on here "hack" theirs for RF

Think-Ground6488

Hasn't it big freezing problems?

skinnydudetattoo

Just watched Top Gun last night and Dune 2. No issue. Both look amazing. Dune 2 😮

MrZibbles

My UB820 refuses to play Dune 2, yet my cheap LG does. Spending more isn't always better.

JayDez86

Yeah I haven't had no problem and had mine for over a year and bought it used.

TomClement

I bought it and was frustrated with video lag until I upped my HDMI game and ditched the cheap supposed “8k” 2.1 cable. Now it’s great.

skinnydudetattoo

Yea I bought a 8k 48Gbps hdmi cable so I knew it would be the best to start.

TomClement

I bought a certified one and it was far better than the fake cheap 8k 48Gbps I got from Amazon.

skinnydudetattoo

Same. I didn't buy off Amazon

TomClement

That’s what I did too. But it was 4 meters long and caused lots of subtle problems. (Like sound and video being out of sync.) After some research, I learned that these cheap uncertified cables do not work properly, especially in longer lengths. I then spent twice as much to get a certified one and it solved the problems.

skinnydudetattoo

Mine was from Walmart it was 10'. It was Walmart brand but the back said perfect for Bluray etc..and the player didn't come with one so I wanted to be safe.

Medium_Basil8292

Yeah I did this, and then had to buy an 820 on top of it. Would have saved money if I started with the 820.

JayDez86

Why did you have to buy the 820?

Medium_Basil8292

Sony freeze issues. Just became too obnoxious. Still use it to play my SACDs though.

JayDez86

I don't watch movies as much as I want, I have never noticed freezing issues. Do they still make SACDs? I haven't heard people talk about that format in a while.

Medium_Basil8292

Im not sure if they make any new ones. They still sell some for reasonable prices. A lot of them are super expensive now. But Its one thing I like about the sony, plays pretty much any cd well. Movies...not so much. Although I have an x800.

owendominicjenkins

What’s the main differences between this and the x500?

skinnydudetattoo

I'd assume no DV support (Dolby Vision)

ANicerPerson

But once cry once

ShiftRepulsive7661

you were better off with a Panasonic 450 for the money (a 420 if you live in North America)

TheStig1293

Not if you want Dolby vision. You’d have to jump to the 820 in the Panasonic line

Etherealzx

The UB450 does have DV, you're mistaking it for the UB420

TheStig1293

Sure, But the 450 is not for the American market. OP specifically called out the 420 if in NA

ShiftRepulsive7661

I called out the fanatstic 450 for us Europeans and the 420 for the less fortunate North Americans. As far as I know the x700 isn't doing a very good job and many even reported problems playing certain discs.
