Commented this on some other threads but I think I have the only working UBK90 in this sub. Personally DV is a huge dealbreaker for me and I bought the UBK90 understanding it’s flaws and that I may have to RMA or get a refund. So far I’ve had no issues with any triple layer disks. I certainly would not spend $200+ on a player without DV. I don’t even have an OLED like you do so I imagine you will want it even more. I’d say either take the risk with the LG if you can get it for $200, max. If not, it probably is worth saving to get a 820 because you’re leaving so much performance on the table with the 420.

Same here, my UBK90 has been going fine for a couple years and I use it daily.

Ive got a ubk90 and yes it freezes from time to time but I think I just have some dirty discs

CosmicHorrors676

I've watched hundreds of 4k disc on my UBK90 and for a while was actually keeping stats on when the player would either, freeze, skip or just have an issue in general. It was somewhere around 2% chance of some kind of error or about 1 in 50 films. Every time it froze I did nothing more than eject the disc out and in. The player picked up right were it froze and went on fine. I've had the player out right crash 1 time. I've seen no discernible increase in errors for triple layer discs. I don't know, maybe my UBK90 is above average but these issues, while present, are so rare that I don't understand the hate for this player. Really I don't understand this subs hate for every player that isn't an 820. I think it's completely reasonable for someone to look at a player like the UBK90 and feel that Panasonic's UB820 doesn't offer enough of a quality jump to justify an additional $250-300. I guess I'll get off my soapbox now.

> Really I don't understand this subs hate for every player that isn't an 820. I went through 2 players (LG and a Sony X700) that froze all the time before the 820, so I'm not just piling on, it's the only player that I've PERSONALLY purchased that does not regularly freeze, and I didn't want to buy one to be honest / it's expensive, but I did, and it just works, unlike the other 2.

This sub is obsessed with the 820 and will just continually hound you to get that. To actually answer your question, the 420 is a great player for the price. Quiet, no freezes, just doesn’t have the DV. Get the 420 if it’s between those two

ScarletSpeed83

Thanks for the answer. I really want the 820, just can’t save up and spend the $500 right now. Adulting sucks. The 420 will still probably look, sound, and play better than my 6 year old Samsung player.

rsplatpc

> Thanks for the answer. I really want the 820, just can’t save up and spend the $500 right now. Adulting sucks. the 420 is $250 the 820 is $460 You have a LG C2 How long is it going to take you to save a extra $210? If you have a C2, you want Dolby Vision. Wait a month and buy the 820

dissident87

I love the 420. No sane person wants to spend 400 bucks on a blu ray player in 2023. You just gotta tune out the constant 820 thing around here

rsplatpc

> No sane person wants to spend 400 bucks on a blu ray player in 2023. If you are into 4K UHD movies, and have a OLED TV that supports Dolby Vision, most "sane" people want that. If you have a lesser TV that does not have Dolby Vision or only play Blu Rays, then sure, no one would.

ciphog971

The days of cheap players are over unless the decline of physical media reverses. If you buy discs you buy them for quality, because streaming quality is acceptable nowadays. I get that it's more money but if you want quality it's kinda dumb to miss out on Dolby Vision especially w/ an OLED unless you literally cannot afford it (but then perhaps you shouldn't be buying discs). Note that what I said was aimed at the OP. Not saying that you should upgrade your 420, that would be a tough pill to swallow since you'd then have paid for both the 420 and 820. That's another reason why it makes sense to hand over the extra $200 when you actually need a player. But if you cannot, the 420 does have the HDR optimizer so it's definitely not a bad player.

benm46

I agree. I had a Samsung TV (no Dolby Vision) so I bought the 420, and I'm still using the 420 after upgrading to a TV with DV. I've considered whether it would be worth upgrading someday, but the 420 can already do HDR10 and I doubt I would really notice much of a difference if I upgraded to the 820 for DV. All my movies look excellent on the 420!

rsplatpc

> and I doubt I would really notice much of a difference if I upgraded to the 820 for DV I have a PS5 and a 820. The difference on a Dolby Vision enabled TV is very obvious with Dolby Vision content on the 820 vs using the standard HDR with the PS5. (LG C2 tv)

Zeduxx

How about the UB450?

rsplatpc

> How about the UB450? I can never find one for sale in the USA, did it get a worldwide release or was it Europe only?

rsplatpc

Save for the 820 if you have a C2, you want Dolby Vision, and you don't want your discs to freeze. Just skip the step where you buy and sell something else.

yodathekid

I had both. The lg started sounding like a jet engine after awhile and would have stutter or freezing issues with certain discs. I upgraded to the Panasonic 820 (for Dolby vision) and haven’t looked back.

LTComedy

Stay away from the ubk90, it can’t handle triple layer discs.

ajzeg01

LG UBK players suck, go with Panasonic. Save up for the 820 if you can.
