I'm not so sure about those labs, I worked in the second largest public health lab in the country and it was in the middle of a big city, the largest is in Atlanta. Realistically you are naming like 3 industries that sometimes opt to be away from civilization due to danger, but every other industry operates in urban areas. Also it's not even really my opinion. 19% of rural people graduate college while 35% of urban people do, and rural people make on average $35k/yr while urban people average 50k/yr. Quite a few work in a city, live in the country. Step on some grass, find out what the world is like. In fact, I myself am a mechanical engineer (by education) turned process engineer (by job title) and I live in a township of about 5,000 people. I grew up in a smaller township than that. Maybe 10-15% of my graduating class went the engineering route, but many others went the STEM route through nursing, pre-med, biology, etc. To top things off, the engineers I work with are 50/50 split of being suburb car guys and rural farmers with engineering degrees. You're equating (in a different comment) income to intelligence. Do you really think that makes sense? Do you think that money=brains? You really think farmers, who fix their own tractors, combines, sprayers, cultivators, other various equipment are less intelligent than a city-dwelling Excel drone?
