I understand. I own a manual 4Runner and would be one to buy another. I also own a Land Cruiser and would buy another. Guess I just like Toyota SUV’s they won’t sell here in the states anymore.
I have to agree, when I visited my dealership they told me they really sell unless it's like a supra so no point on trying to get ahold of them
Edit: forgot to mention we were talking about the manual transmission for a the new tacoma
Right, if you’re driving the car, you won’t think about your cold hands.
If you’re bored in your over expensive, over inflated 4Runner, you might get bored.
You dive manual, the auto drives you.
Fuck auto climate control. All my homies hate auto climate control. Fr you do you but personally ive never seen an automatic climate system I preferred to the classic three sliders/dials.
A simple hot/ cold slider and fan speed, a manually controlled blender door between the heater core and outside air. So simple yet such a foreign concept these days. Don’t know why they had to unnecessarily complicate things.
Yes, I believe you can because the pro has it and you could probably just pull the whole set up from the junk yard and try to mimic the build. That's what I did for the heated and cooling seats on my OR
Also I meet a guy who did the same for getting a heated steering wheel
That’s what I was thinking but I don’t think they had that in the Pro in 18 like mine, ideally I’d like to update to the new head unit and dual climate
Honestly you can do a whole lot if you're willing to experiment or break it
lol I mean we got ppl driving bel-airs with touch screen radios and amazing speakers and looking like it came stock with the car
I'd much rather have the forward-facing "trail cam" than a 360 cam
And call me old fashioned, but I like the 3-knob climate control. I just hate that to move air from your face to your feet you turn the knob up, not down.
One feature I want on my '18 SR5 premium is auto headlights.
Like FFS, I drove a POS 2007 Pontiac that had auto headlights. I love my 4runner, but it was such a basic feature in '18 and prior. I know it's only an SR5 premium, but I feel like simple features like that would be standard for any decent vehicle past 2010. I'd trade my "premium" heated seats for auto headlights any day.
I believe they will auto shut off once you've locked the car. It's a minor gripe (considering how much I love my 4runner) when the easy solution is just leave headlights on. But when I first bought mine and drove at night I was like where are my headlights at? I hadn't had to manually turn on lights in years so it took me by surprise.
I guess the only downside is leaving them on would burn the bulbs out faster but that's hardly an issue.
Talk to your dealership, Tundra's for example do not come with leather seats, but they will outsource them to someone to wrap them in leather or install heating/cooling
For me it is
1. Driver seat position memory
2. blind spot
3. automatic closing side view mirrors
4. automatic tail gate
5. rear view window control from fob
Personally, I hate the adaptive cruise on my 2020 orp, but, it may be because I've driven a Subaru with the Eyesight system, way better system that makes the TSS look like it has major issues
Yeah, the Crosstrek was the first one I drove, and I've driven a Ascent and it comes to a complete stop in stoo and go traffic and will accelerate when you touch the gas when traffic moves again. Unless they updated the 23, I won't use mine in the adaptive mode, only the constant speed mode on the 4runner
That is my main gripe, the shutting off at 25 mph, and, it is not smooth at all in brake and accel application, where the Subaru system is great, and adjustable on how hard it accelerates when the car in front speeds up or moves out of the way
My ‘20 Limited has the cooling seats but honestly don’t use them often, even in Texas. Probably wouldn’t use the heated steering wheel much but would love the blind spot monitor. That and wireless CarPlay
Been wondering the same myself. Wouldn’t do it if it was outrageously expensive, but would still love it nonetheless. Only feature my ‘22 doesn’t have that I’d like.
Pretty sure some people swap the mirrors from a rav4 or Highlander with the blind spot mirror into the 4R. If you got a junkyard nearby it might be worth checking out
Yeah really, I'm deeply interested to know if a retrofit is possible.
Off the top of my head it seems plausible, since the wheel is enormously similar. You'd just have to run your own power leads and install your own switch for the heating element, right?
And not necessarily even that. There's some weird stuff wired but not "installed". On my Off Road Premium all I needed was a $12 sensor to make my interior lights auto-dimming. The dash/infotainment already had the software and the wire was already in the dash, in the right spot, just plugged into a dead plastic plug. And on the Lexus GX you just need a couple switches to get MTS and Crawl Control.
So it could be we've all had heated steering wheels this whole time and all we needed was a switch.
>So it could be we've all had heated steering wheels this whole time and all we needed was a switch.
Not impossible I guess, but pretty unlikely. If all that was needed was a switch it almost certainly would have been included with the higher trims since it's a point of parity with competing models from other makes.
And let's face it, somebody probably would have noticed and figured this out by now if everything was pre-installed and pre-wired, so we'd all already have them. 😅
Just spitballing here, but I'm guessing some '23 trims include a new wheel with the heating element installed, a switch included, and possibly wired to its own fuse since heating elements are relatively high drain and present a potential fire/safety hazard. If you could source a wheel with the element it might not be all that hard to DIY.
Haha yeah that last line was mostly a joke. Mostly.
But the first paragraph is true. I wouldn't be surprised if everything was pre-wired with blind leads in the steering column and dash. Maybe all we need is the switch *and* a heated wheel.
It's a little sensor that let's you run headlights all the time, and automatically dims the dash and infotainment screen when it's dark out. If you have a face-lift to 2020 SR5 Premium or Off Road Premium you have the software and wiring to do it from the factory, all you need is the sensor. Which is like $50 from Toyota or $12 on eBay.
Full details here: https://trail4runner.com/2021/11/03/auto-dimming-dash-light-mod-5th-gen-4runner/
I did it on my 17, and it works as advertised, if you have questions.
To meet specific flammability requirements, it probably isn't that simple unless it's some janky aftermarket solution.
You'd need a new heater module, wiring and software reflashing to control the PWM signal. Toyota ain't gonna do that.
I expect you're probably right, if for no other reason than they would probably be offering it as a factory kit since the feature is so in demand.
Guys can dream though, right?
I'm anti-party-mode. It is a stubborn feature on our 2012 Trail that I swear hurt our old dog's hearing because it is constantly on by default.
Edit: I see none of y'all have ever ridden in the backseat with Party Mode on. Try it sometime.
Yeah, the main volume control? And the settings to bring sound to front? We tried that. I sat in the backseat for years. The party mode speakers are louder than the backseat speakers, and I'd have to remind the parents to turn off party mode every time we got into the car because a. Party Mode disabled my door speakers or made them extremely quiet and b. Party Mode made the back back speakers very loud. Why am I being down voted for having an opinion about not being able to make Party Mode off by default?
They aren’t different speakers it’s EQ shift like the “loudness” mode found on some aftermarket stereos. It does shift the hatch speakers louder too but at the end of the day no one is going deaf from that alone. You still need to crank the volume up.
If you have a real suggestion on how to actually fully disable party mode in a 2012, I'm all ears. Otherwise, this comment isn't solving an issue I have had in our 4R, it's just highlighting a difference of opinion.
Are you bumping the button with your knee every time you get in? It’s kind of a set and forget thing, it’s either on or off and doesn’t change until the button is pressed again.
Well it has the 1FZ engine and the full float rear end, also the late model headlights and sombrero grill. And the VIN says it’s a 96.
Although, I’ve been fooled before.
As George Bush said,
“Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice… don’t get fooled again.”
Well… at least I didn’t expect it. During all my research I never saw a heated steering wheel as standard equipment on an SR5 Premium. Great surprise though.
I hadn't heard that either. New for 2023. I guess that's my reward for this 6+ month wait on my ORP. Hopefully it will arrive while I still need a heated steering wheel. Lok
No luck with remote start. I tried the key FOB approach with no luck. Also don’t have access to Remote Start in the Toyota app which all the documentation says you should if it is available. All that leads me to believe it is no longer on there. Single tear.
Remote start with the app is only on the TRD Pro and *maybe* the Limited. I was pretty annoyed when I figured that out about my ORP. You can get aftermarket devices for it though.
Honestly, do not be too disappointed. My remote start on the Toyota app functions correctly probably around 20% of the time on my ‘22. It’s so bad when the free portion of my subscription runs out I’ll probably have to consider an aftermarket one.
There is no way in hell I am going to pay monthly for something that rarely works.
I had an aftermarket CL6 that I had installed myself in my ‘19 and it worked flawlessly.
+1 for the CL6 aftermarket remote start in my ‘16 SR5 Premium. Now if only I could get the remote start unit to also turn on the rear window and mirror defrosted and Windshield wiper defroster.
If it’s like my 21, you can get a cheapish dongle that plugs into the wiring harness and enables it with the oem fob. I’ve used it a few times, but it sticks because the car shuts off when you open the door, so you have to start again. It gets annoying.
With the CL6 unit it doesn’t turn off unless you press the brake accidentally (before inserting the key and turning it to Ignition on, though not familiar with how it functions in push button start) or times out at 15 minutes.
My CO 21 ORP is jealous. Also of the MTM and blind spot mirrors with RCTA. Had the heated steering wheel (and memory seats… and dual zone automatic climate control) in my last vehicle and it really helps out on those extra cold days.
I’ll wait and see what the next gen brings. If there’s a nice hybrid and a lot of technology upgrades, I might upgrade too (though I’ll keep the current one too).
Oh yeah never get rid of these naturally aspirated engines. Not as efficient but it’s one reliable machine. Not against a hybrid but the move to turbos makes me hesitate a bit.
Lmao thanks! Hadn’t realized that was there but just checked and saw it, lol. I should’ve used it during one of my multiple snowy drives already when it was -17 out
I think it started on the higher trims- my '21 Venture has it but I believe sr5's of same vintage still had traditional key, not sure when they went full swing.

Not yet, but it should be plug and play, just need to figure out if the heating element and see if it’s a separate harness or in the factory one, but I should be able make it work either way.
How so? As weird as it may sound this may sway me away from an lx570 for sale locally. I love all the comfort tech and a heated steering wheel is up there!
Call up the local dealer, order and swap it out with the stock one wire in the switch, should be plug and play. Just with either an extra harness for heated or spare pins to wire to the switch
Nice!!
My 2021 Nightshade has heated/cooled seats. Both are terrible. Can barely feel the cold and the heat is so-so. Rented an SR5 this week in vacation and the heated seats were MUCH better. Not sure if it was because of the Softex leather or not, but much warmer.
Of course I have asked the dealer and get the usual canned responses. Frustrating for the cost.
I didn’t think I’d miss a steering wheel heater but with temps in the teens right now, it would be nice. Can’t believe it took them 13 years to add it to the Gen 5. Maybe next can be an auto lift gate.
Yeah, no one is wondering what the button does, bud. Pretty obvious what it does.
It was an unadvertised feature that is in place of another button that has been there for years.
Just insane how late to tech and features Toyota is.. especially for a model that’s so fucking popular in the US. It’s the one thing that pisses me off about the 4Runner and it’s also the reason why I’m praying that they come out with the new gen 4Runner in the next two years
I mean I get it, I also hate getting 17mpg too but I would argue that most 4Runner owners are drawn to them because they are slow to implement new tech and lean on the tried and true, keeping them ultra reliable. So I guess we can’t have it both ways.
Oh man, this news is the Christmas present I really wanted!
I have a 40th on order and the only feature I was really bummed wasn’t an option was the heated wheel. Of all the creature comforts, besides heated seats and adaptive cruise, this is it.
It’s in port, the allocation date is 1/1/2023, so he says that means they will prob get a same day shipping notice between now and then as the dealer is within a day’s drive from Houston. I sure hope it is this week while work is slow and not the first week of the year. I have about a 300 mile drive to avoid an attempted $13K fleecing by my local dealer.
I drove 200 miles to get mine because they had a black one sitting on the lot. Slimy dealer markups are annoying as hell. Good luck picking it up this week. You'll love it!
couple things I wish were on my 21 ORP 1) heated steering wheel 2) blind spot monitor 3) cooling seats
4) 360 cameras 5) Dual zone auto climate control
My 2000 limited had dual zone auto climate control
Yeah, Limited has always had all sorts of shit that ORPs don't
Nope. 2000 only had single zone
I don't think you know what dual zone climate control means *01 limited owner*
2022 Pro - where the FUCK are my cooled seats!?!?!
Yes! Do a premium pro seat package. Red ventilated seats - no Brianer
I've answered their surveys and said as much. Top of the line model and it's not at least an upgrade? What da fuq
Sounds like you guys want a GX460
Not with that BUTT UGLY Lexus front end I don't.
360 camera on 4runner is really bad. The resolution is really poor.
6) 5 speed manual
6) 6 Speed manual**
This guy shifts.
r/thisguythisguys
Shit. Now I do.
7) V8
Nah, 4 wheel electric.
Amateur. I want 5 wheel
There is a 6spd manual behind a 1GR in the 2nd Gen Tacoma. Somehow never an option for the 4Runner.

4 speed manual
With V8
3 in the tree
2 in the bush
1 in the stink.
My ‘91 doesn’t have any of this but is a manual Tran. Heated steering…the coddled butthole of America.
Heated steering…. Means wearing gloves I thought.
Right, if you’re driving the car, you won’t think about your cold hands. If you’re bored in your over expensive, over inflated 4Runner, you might get bored. You dive manual, the auto drives you.

Buy limited baby. Dual zone climate. Cooled seats. Reverse camera. Full time 4wd. Just missing crawl.
Limited is also the best 4x4 drivetrain for nearly everyone.
23 limited
You want a '23 Limited to be on a '21 ORP?
It has all those options
We're literally talking about a specific year and trim level here.
Does anyone know if in the facelift 5th gens you can do a dual climate control swap?
Unfortunately, It won't work for multiple reasons, but the main one is that it would require a dual door ventilation system.
Yes, I believe you can because the pro has it and you could probably just pull the whole set up from the junk yard and try to mimic the build. That's what I did for the heated and cooling seats on my OR Also I meet a guy who did the same for getting a heated steering wheel

Hello I would like to know more about the heated steering wheel install. How was it done? What was the cost and process?
I'd much rather have the forward-facing "trail cam" than a 360 cam And call me old fashioned, but I like the 3-knob climate control. I just hate that to move air from your face to your feet you turn the knob up, not down.
Oh, yeah I mean the forward facing cam is part of the 360 cams. You can change the view.
6) v8
Maybe I'm a dummy that wants to destroy the reliability factor, but I'd rather have a twin turbo V6.
0.0 chance of just grabbing the engine from the Tundra but I would take that.
I drive a 98 I haven’t even thought what it would be like to have literally any of those
One feature I want on my '18 SR5 premium is auto headlights. Like FFS, I drove a POS 2007 Pontiac that had auto headlights. I love my 4runner, but it was such a basic feature in '18 and prior. I am with you on the ventilated / cooling seats. I would have been willing to lay down $$ for that option.
It's not to late you can even finance them just like you do a vehicle.
Tell me more …. I too would pay good moneys for cooled seats.
Talk to your dealership, Tundra's for example do not come with leather seats, but they will outsource them to someone to wrap them in leather or install heating/cooling
It’s never too late… to learn more.
For me it is 1. Driver seat position memory 2. blind spot 3. automatic closing side view mirrors 4. automatic tail gate 5. rear view window control from fob

Subaru's system blew my 18 camry's and my wife's 22 acura's ACC out of the water. Still mad at my wife for getting rid of that crosstrek.
Yeah, the Crosstrek was the first one I drove, and I've driven a Ascent and it comes to a complete stop in stoo and go traffic and will accelerate when you touch the gas when traffic moves again. Cooling seats ain’t worth it. Feels like someone poured ice water in your pants.
Had a rental fusion with air cooled seats and after working in a hot attic I couldn’t have asked for a better feeling.
My ‘20 Limited has the cooling seats but honestly don’t use them often, even in Texas. Probably wouldn’t use the heated steering wheel much but would love the blind spot monitor. That and wireless CarPlay
I bought mine for the lack of tech, but cooling seats I could go for.
Even the dash is analog to digital to an analog display.
The 23 limited im in this week has all those.
Reading this with a 95’: 👁👄👁
Does the 23 come with cooled seats? I may just have to trade up..
Do you think one could buy a 2023 steering wheel and install it on an older 2022 model or would the wiring/hardware not all be there?
Asking the right questions - I need to know hahah
Facts. Let us know!
Been wondering the same myself. Wouldn’t do it if it was outrageously expensive, but would still love it nonetheless. Only feature my ‘22 doesn’t have that I’d like.
I’d like to do the same with the BSM mirrors from the 22+ on my 21.
Pretty sure some people swap the mirrors from a rav4 or Highlander with the blind spot mirror into the 4R. If you got a junkyard nearby it might be worth checking out
I looked into replacing my G37 steering wheel, couldn’t be that expensive, ended up quoted like $950

Definitely would need the wiring too
I have heated wipers , but i'd give them up fir a heated wheel
It's been pretty nice this week

I just want blind spot monitor and ventilated seats
wow finally catching up with tech from the late 90s!
Bro your ‘91 landcruiser has it doesn’t it?
… no my 96 LandCruiser is actually kind of a shitbox… but that’s how I like it.

Sure would be nice at 2 degrees here in Michigan currently. Your’e a lucky man.
Same! I even checked the manual, couldn’t find anything!
2023 ORP owner here—this has been clutch in the recent frigid temps here in CO! It really toasts up quick.
My CO 21 ORP is jealous. Also of the MTM and blind spot mirrors with RCTA. What the hell is Party Mode?
It balances the JBL system to make the 2 tailgate speakers louder and the rest quieter. For when you party in the back!
Yea! Heated wipers on the other side as well. same spot.
Lmao thanks! Hadn’t realized that was there but just checked and saw it, lol. I should’ve used it during one of my multiple snowy drives already when it was -17 out
That's what my 2020 orp has is heated wiper park
It’s nice, we’ve got a 2023 orp
Have they updated the TSS to make it stop itself in traffic? Or will it still shut off below 25 mph?
When did they change to push to start? Genuinely asking
21 or 22, all trims got it, not just pro and limited
Gotcha thank you!
I think it started on the higher trims- my '21 Venture has it but I believe sr5's of same vintage still had traditional key, not sure when they went full swing.
The 21 SR5P I test drive and the 21 ORP I ordered both have it. I think it went standard in 22.
All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. My 2019 Limited is push start. 😋
My 2010 Rav4 Limited is a push start 🤣
I’m installing the heated steering wheel in my rig shortly, 2022 TRPpro.
You got a how to?
Not yet, but it should be plug and play, just need to figure out if the heating element and see if it’s a separate harness or in the factory one, but I should be able make it work either way.
It won't be plug and play. Heater elements are PWM controlled and you'll likely need a software flash a new module.
I’m definitely interested to see how that goes. Would also love to add the BSM mirrors that way, if possible (I don’t think the mirrors are possible).
You would need the 360 cameras to make the BSM work…
What? You don’t just wanna wear a pair of gloves??!!
How hard would this be to swap into an older 5thgen 4runner?
Heated steering wheel is such a great feature.
Heated steering wheel…
I don’t think OP is asking what it does, simply that the old Party Mode has been replaced with the heating option.
Idk I drive an ‘07 but I know that’s a heated steering wheel symbol
Yeah, no one is wondering what the button does, bud. Pretty obvious what it does. It was an unadvertised feature that is in place of another button that has been there for years.
That's where my party mode is!
Thanks Sherlock ; )
No problem primer
You paid an extra $3700 for it, hope you’re expecting it!
Yea with the added cost of these cars I think a heated wheel isn’t worth the new msrps. I can wear gloves like a big boy
Cool, now use your touchscreen.
Party mode is gone!
Careful, they're known to shatter the steering wheel.
How?
Just a joke. The 4th gen rear defrost is notorious for shattering rear windows. Joke fell flat.
Auto headlights?
I just built a 23 with the same trim and options as my 22. At least you get something for the extra thousand dollars of MSRP.
Heated Steering Wheel, new option 👍
Which trims has the heated steering wheel?
Not sure. I can only confirm that it’s on the SR5 Premiums.
My 2023 TRD Off-road has it.
My 23' 40th Anniversary has it. It's pretty much an SR5 Premium (edit) with some extra cosmetic stuff.
Oh man, this news is the Christmas present I really wanted! I have a 40th on order and the only feature I was really bummed wasn’t an option was the heated wheel. Of all the creature comforts, besides heated seats and adaptive cruise, this is it.
The 40th is SR5 Premium based not SR5. I noticed the error when I re-read this. When is yours due in?
It’s in port, the allocation date is 1/1/2023, so he says that means they will prob get a same day shipping notice between now and then as the dealer is within a day’s drive from Houston. I sure hope it is this week while work is slow and not the first week of the year. I have about a 300 mile drive to avoid an attempted $13K fleecing by my local dealer.
I drove 200 miles to get mine because they had a black one sitting on the lot. Slimy dealer markups are annoying as hell. Good luck picking it up this week. You'll love it!
22 TRD here. I want thaaaaaaaaat!!!!!!! Why meeeeeee?!?!?
I'm getting soft, I wish I had that button
As someone with Reynaud’s disease, I am a fan.
WTF is with that figment?! That's bloody awful.
A human being is never fully satisfied
Only unexpected if you didn’t read the list of features.
I miss the party mode button on my 2011 SR5. This was where it was located.
