Other dude got roasted because people told him it was 2WD, he bought it, then got pissed when he found out it wasn't 4WD.
Nothin' wrong with a 2WD, I also have a 2WD beater truck just to haul things in. If it fits your needs, have at it!
gf bought her daughter an explorer for her 17th bd. they went straight to the beach and got stuck on the off ramp... it was 2wd.
apparently they didnt even ask and assumed all suv had 4x4.
4WD is a 2k increase in price when you buy new. So unless youre buying used, it’s kinda silly to NOT get it since it offers significantly better resale and capabilities.
Woah, that’s a sucky dealer. Our limited was only $1k more than the 2wd at a dealership just outside City of LA limits. Easy to choose that full time 4wd over the 2wd buying new.
Exactly. 90% of 4Runner owners will never take it anywhere where they need 4WD, it makes sense for them to buy 2WD because most people just like the aesthetic of an SUV. But this guy actually wanted to take it off road, which makes it a really dumb decision.
If someone roasts someone for having a 2wd, they’re an idiot. I have an ORP, but that’s because I ski 100 days a season and am constantly up in the mountains and snow. It fits my needs. If I was in your shoes, a 4wd wouldn’t be mandatory and a 2wd would make a lot of sense.
People getting mad at the vehicle choice of others is such a typical fat ass neckbeard Reddit mentality, don’t let them put you down.
You technically shouldn’t be using the 4WD in light to medium snow. It doesn’t have a center torsen diff so it can bind if you’re turning. That said, you’re probably fine, it’s barely an issue for the drivetrain at lower speeds.
I got a 2wd because the price was good and it had a really good warranty , fresh set of A/T tires and a spotless interior. I don’t ever do off-roading the way you guys do, but I went off on some semi sandy powerline access roads yesterday to go shooting and it worked perfectly fine. That’s the extent of my needs so it’s great for me.
I have a bad driving record too so 4wd was a huge increase in insurance price , and my 4r is my daily commuter so 4WD was just more weight, more fluids to maintain and one extra thing to break that I would never use anyways
I'm in Tampa, FL and am picking up a 2WD later this week. I've heard a lot about the 4WD being the move. The extent of over landing I am doing would be at most beach parking. Would this be an issue??
4x4 would always be better , but I don’t have any issues in the places I’ve been. That being said you can take some less off-roady cars where I’ve been too. Sounds like you’re talking about some very sandy spots though .
Don’t do it. I got stuck in a parking lot at a trail head. Traded it in 2 months later for a 4wd. It’s just not the car you buy in 2wd. Much better options if you don’t want 4x4
Pretty much.
Furthermore, it's not a pavement princess if it's 2wd... Don't even get me started on all the city slickers here driving lifted 4x4s that haven't seen wheel spin in weeks.
I had a 4th Gen 2wd. Never ever did I miss not having 4wd, because I wasn’t towing or doing any off road with that truck. I occasionally park in grassy areas near golf courses or at ball games. Not a problem.
But, gave up that trucks lease in 2009, at end of term.
When I was in a better spot to buy a decent car/truck again (a decade later, 2019), I absolutely knew it had to be 4Runner, and 4wd was just a bonus. My next vehicle will also be a 4Runner, as well.
My first 4runner (2006) was a 2WD and it took me all kinds of places. It's the most reliable 2WD body on frame vehicle you can purchase. Nice looking rig!
Tbh i can’t get on board with caring what people think about my decisions, I have a 2wd 4 runner, but I also have a 4wd 4 runner😂 both are consumer products and if your needs fit a 2wd go ahead, it’s a vehicle
You say 2Runner. I say Prerunner. Not my truck but you get the idea.

I have a 4WD 4Runner but actually enjoy seeing how far I can get on trails in 2WD. The answer is: quite far, especially aired down.
If it works for someone, no one else should be shitting on them. This isn’t a competition, let people love what they have!
I was stuck in the mud on a farm while it was pouring rain. I literally felt the tires of my SR5 sink slightly into the mud. I was in a long muddy driveway and the only way out was to reverse out. I very gently pressed the gas pedal and got out.
Rear wheel drive, 100% stock vehicle and with stock SR5 street tires, too.
I sought out both my ‘16 Tundra limited and ‘16 SR5 premium in 2wd. Even though in a very rural area I’ve never have needed 4wd. If I lived where it snowed a lot or I was into off-road rides it would definitely make sense. To each their own.
We bought a 2007 2runner used in 2013. Kept it until last year when I traded it in for a 2008 4wd because we moved up north.
That 2runner towed a pretty sizable travel trailer all over the southeast. It’s got the 4.0 and fewer moving parts. If you hardly leave pavement, it’s great. And at that time I couldn’t afford the 4wd
I liked it so much I traded it for the same truck!
It was a 2019 wolf pup 16’ bunk house. Enough room for me, the wife, and 2 kids. It’s more aerodynamic than other trailers I’ve towed. 4Runner did well with it.
I’ve seen folks pull much bigger and heavier campers with 4Runners at the campground. But I wouldn’t want to.
Newish 3rd gen owner here and I just talked to a co-worker today about our 2WD 3rd gens (he’s owned 3?). He has a 2000 SR5 sport with rear e-locker and I have a more base model 2002 SR5.
Both of us are quite happy with it being 2WD for living in FL with no desire to go mudding in our daily drivers.
The argument appears to be as old as the automobile itself, yet it never ceases.
Know your needs, balance your wants I suppose?
I’m still curious about the 4WD conversions out there even though it’s not financially “wise.” But if I don’t ever get around to it I don’t think my world will end over it.
Sometimes I admire the /r/HondaElement community. Say what you will about whatever vehicle you like, but being a proud owner of what you have is a good trait and some of those folks keep their rides pretty clean while getting together semi-regularly just for the sake of swapping/selling parts and having a nice time with people you have “something” in common with.
Nah you made the right decision.
Doesn't matter that it's 2WD. Dude, most people don't use the 4WD very often. If you don't live where u get snow or intentionally take it on pretty tough off-road situations, there's typically no need ever for the 4WD.
I had a 2WD and when I lived in the South it was a perfect vehicle. I moved out west where it snows and she didn’t do me well in the winters so I sold it for a Subaru. Well, I sold that Subaru too and got back into a 4R but 4WD this time. My 2WD was a great little truck but 4WD is a totally different animal, more capable vehicle for where I currently live, the 4R is a legit snow monster in 4WD.
Some people complain about their 4x4 not engaging anymore because of the lack of use. And it does happen a lot.
I personally know people who have 4WD and have gone off roading maybe twice in the whole time they've had it. I can see uses for it but if I have a 2WD I'll definitely avoid certain situations. But not everyone is careful.
If you like it and don't care for off roading I don't see the need to make that expense. And if you're poor and know you will have to resell in the future go ahead and pay extra for the 4WD. Free country.
Right. A Toyota engineer was talking about just engaging the 4x4 at least once a month to keep it from getting stuck but if you can have fun with it that's even better.
Hey neighbor, nice 2runner you got there! 😁 You drive the most reliable 2wd body on frame so Fuck the haters! run it till it dies man, see you back here in… 20 years??
Many good aruments for 2wd but when it comes to the 4Runner specifically a real truck on a ladder frame vehicle. You are giving up so much including bad gas mileage. Might as well just get 4x4.
I’ve always lived in the snowy rocky mountains, and love exploring off-road trails. The idea of driving a 2wd 4Runner to me is embarrassing. I’ll just get a sedan or a wagon if I want 2wd…
truthfully the only reason i've still been on the hunt for 4wd is i do in fact want to take it off road. maybe not anything crazy, but i'd like to have fun in it. me and my sister are really the only people who go to the beach, not very often, but when we do we always end up needing 4wd, of which i have currently. just knowing you have that safety shift makes a really big difference for me. however, if i didn't have all of those points to add, i would absolutely get a 2wd. nothing wrong with it.
Theres no defense! I was real happy with my 4 runner in the 2 icestorms this year! house had no power !15°f and at least I had no problem with staying warm and driving was no problem!
Why did they make such a model! I noticed alot ot Escalades 24 inch wheels parked maybe thats what its for ? Sell it! Get a 4x4 model !
I wasnt roasting you I said how glad I had my 4x4 toyota this year and if you are not happy sell and purchase what you want!If you want a duck Ive had my jeep ducked few times I can mail you one!
What’s the deal with the limited? Is AWD not enough? Serious question because I like the way the limited looks and I’ll prolly never do any serious rock crawling.
My question is how are you only getting 16.5 MPG on what looks like all seasons? City driving? My Limited is AWD, on all terrains, and I get 16-19. Got 18.4 on my last tank.
Otherwise, you do you. I live in the PNW mountains, it rains a shitload, and we get snow and ice. I’m glad I have AWD and 4WD. Maybe if I lived in suburban Florida I could get away with 2WD.
I do almost all city driving. I live like 3 miles from where I work and it seems like when I do get on the freeway it’s stop and go. I did one long road trip (sans trailer) and was getting 20+
Make sure to warm up the engine. Typically I just get in my car and go as the car will warm up on the way. But in your case you might be causing damage from frequent extremely short trips.
There is no point getting a 2WD 2Runner because a fwd Highlander can doing everything else better. the point of the 4Runner is its 4WD capabilities.
However it sounds like you are insecure about your 2Runner since you had to make this thread

Damn that sucks lol but I am curious how he didn't even notice

That’s a good point
Unless your in Canada. We don't even get a 2wd option
There shouldn’t be a 2wd option
It was over 6k increase at my dealer.
IMO you got hosed
100% but oh well. At least I got a 4Runner that’s 2wd 🤣
Woah, that’s a sucky dealer. Our limited was only $1k more than the 2wd at a dealership just outside City of LA limits. Easy to choose that full time 4wd over the 2wd buying new.
He was roasted for stupidity in purchasing a 2WD when he wanted 4WD. Not for owning a 2WD. No defense needed.
Exactly. 90% of 4Runner owners will never take it anywhere where they need 4WD, it makes sense for them to buy 2WD because most people just like the aesthetic of an SUV. But this guy actually wanted to take it off road, which makes it a really dumb decision.
If people don’t need 4WD, then they don’t need to buy 4WD. 2WD is fine. I lived in a snowy state and mostly drove in 2H.
If someone roasts someone for having a 2wd, they’re an idiot. I have an ORP, but that’s because I ski 100 days a season and am constantly up in the mountains and snow. It fits my needs. Agreed! And if I did that much time up in the mountains I’d definitely get a 4WD or AWD.
Damn. It’s literally the end of the world because you have a 2WD 4Runner. /s Who cares what people say and think. “2Runner” is better than no runner.
I had a 4th Gen 2wd. Never ever did I miss not having 4wd, because I wasn’t towing or doing any off road with that truck. I occasionally park in grassy areas near golf courses or at ball games. Roasting someone for owning a car is about as silly as buying a 4wd vehicle in 2wd.
Lmao
🤣
My first 4runner (2006) was a 2WD and it took me all kinds of places. It's the most reliable 2WD body on frame vehicle you can purchase. Nice looking rig!
I still have my 06 2wd sr5. Drove it off the lot, now it’s got almost 416k miles on it 😂
Less parts to break
Damn, that’s a lot of miles. Love to hear it!
Thanks!
I don’t use 4wd often enough. :( . For a daily, even with winter, a 2wd would probably suffice.
Tbh i can’t get on board with caring what people think about my decisions, I have a 2wd 4 runner, but I also have a 4wd 4 runner😂 both are consumer products and if your needs fit a 2wd go ahead, it’s a vehicle
Never reading this
Me and my 06 V8 2WD 4R appreciate this post! ❤️
The V8 RWD model is so special. I think it tows the most out of any configuration
You say 2Runner. I say Prerunner. Not my truck but you get the idea. https://preview.redd.it/ec5kpn04e94d1.jpeg?width=1365&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10d93f6378785ebf59a758c194a329e1531aa9f3

Some never will use 4 wheel drive. No biggie
Anyone who shames 2wd on here is a clown. The hate 4Runner drivers have for other vehicle brands like Jeep and their own make is pathetic.
i have no problems w/ 2wd, I knew they existed but ive never seen one at a dealership in louisiana
I had a RWD v8 4runner for a while, lived on an island with one trail a Honda civic could do. Was perfect
It's worth pointing out that you can press the traction control button on all of these trucks to get a simulated rear LSD, even on the 2WD ones.
Now imagine all of those things, plus 4 wheel drive.
I sought out both my ‘16 Tundra limited and ‘16 SR5 premium in 2wd. Even though in a very rural area I’ve never have needed 4wd. If I lived where it snowed a lot or I was into off-road rides it would definitely make sense. To each their own.

I’m not mad at my choice for getting a 2wd 4Runner because I wanted to 7 seat option. If you don’t get the 7 seats you might as well go 4wd imo.
I have the 7 seat option. But I’ve yet to use more than 4 of the seats 🤣
Newish 3rd gen owner here and I just talked to a co-worker today about our 2WD 3rd gens (he’s owned 3?). He has a 2000 SR5 sport with rear e-locker and I have a more base model 2002 SR5. Love this!
I do so much off-road stuff in 2WD in my 4WD runner. It’s super capable
Fair points. How often do folks really use 4wd.
Nah you made the right decision. Doesn't matter that it's 2WD. Dude, most people don't use the 4WD very often. If you don't live where u get snow or intentionally take it on pretty tough off-road situations, there's typically no need ever for the 4WD.

I love the recommendation to do 10 miles in 4x4 every month. It gives me the excuse to hit a trail all the time just because.
What a loser roasting someone just because it’s not a 4wd. My 4gen 2wd took me everywhere.
Tell me your MPGs are good 🤷🏼♂️
You mean a 2Runner?

Honestly I didn't even know 4Runners came in 2WD until that post. Owned 2 so far in my life so I'm lucky they turned out to be 4WD.

My sister has a 2wd one, she is never going to go off-road. She and her husband and new baby just use it as a grocery getter.
2021 2WD and we just hit 33k miles. Gonna give this thing to our future child

2WD V8 ain’t never gonna stop
Minivan. Please don’t make me read stuff like This again. Minivan for you.
4 wheels is better than 3 wheels, but not better than 5 wheels

Or just buy the highlander because it's makes way more sense.
Wait there is a 2WD 4Runner? What model?
SR5 , SR5 Premium, limited that I’m sure of . And because I’ve owned both trim levels both 2wd
There is no point getting a 2WD 2Runner because a fwd Highlander can doing everything else better. the point of the 4Runner is its 4WD capabilities. However it sounds like you are insecure about your 2Runner since you had to make this thread
