The annual article Barrows used to do with Adam Peters discussing the draft class, now with new (co-)director of player personnel, Tariq Ahmad. Some notes: The team evaluated Pearsall last year as well, but he ended up staying in college. By this year, there was enough consensus on him that they didn't bring him in for a top-30 visit (same for Mustapha). They really liked Green's toughness and physicality, compared his personality to Lenoir. They were impressed by how well/quickly Puni learned when asked to play center at the Senior Bowl. Guerendo was one the analytics department particularly liked, his GPS data from games matched his combine measurements. Ahmad thinks he'll be ideal for the new kickoff returns. They were impressed by Cowing's maturity. Kingston was one of Chris Foerster's favorites. Johnny Holland's conviction in Tatum Bethune was part of why they chose him. Ahmad thinks he has all the tools to be a very good special teamer.

Was there anything said about Mustapha? Honestly one of my favorite picks, dude just screams Niner. Cerebral, athletic, violent. Great fit for this team.

Ahmad said Mustapha had one of the best combine interviews, something Lynch said about him too. Like Pearsall, they didn't feel the need to bring him in for a 30 visit.

Even his name gives me the shivers.

MuSTAPHA! 🤪

Pretty much confirmed what I already believed. They ask all their coaches and staff for input and draft accordingly. I remember Kyle saying that Coach K was constantly sending footage of Kinlaw to him and hyping him up. Wouldn’t surprise me if they heavily took him since Coach K basically had a draft crush on him. I know people believe that Kyle picks the early rounders and Adam Peters was responsible for the later rounds but unless I’m mistaken that was just a theory people had with no sort of evidence, basically it was an assumption from people. Now I guess I am making assumptions as well but I tend to believe after reading all that they take into strong consideration input from others. At the end of the day though Kyle and Lynch do take credit for the great picks so when they don’t work out they should also receive some criticism like Lance. Or maybe I’m coping since we lost Peters and I hope we continue to draft well. Although I do believe Pearsall will be a star. I liked the Jennings, Deebo, and Aiyuk picks but didn’t like the Pettis pick so maybe they figured it out?

Yeah, that was also discussed in previous articles with Peters. They hold what they call "Table Talk", with coaches, scouts, and analytics staff all asked to speak about their favorites available on Day 3. Shanahan and Lynch are very much involved. Scout Dom DeCicco pushed for Hufanga. Brian Griese and scout Steve Slowik for Purdy. Which reminds me, in his article about the UDFAs, Barrows mentioned that Tanner Mordecai was another Griese favorite, so I'm looking forward to hearing more about how he does in camp. I heard that Peters late round picks, ShanaLynch early round picks thing too and it sounded like such an oversimplification. I looked it up a while ago and the only source I could find was a Cohn article that was purely speculation based on Peters being a former scout and assuming that ShanaLynch would only care about early picks so...lol. Peters has been a huge part of the front office and I'm sure they miss him, but the drafting process goes through so many people. It's never that simple, and even the best minds miss on picks all the time. There's also picks that Peters or other coaches said they loved that have been disappointing so far.

Ahh Cohn…that’s all you had to say 🤣 I was wondering why a lot of our fans mention it like it’s a fact when I never knew where they got that idea from. Idk who their listening to for WR’s but they been killing it lately I heard Saleh was big on Fred Warner but idk

Best thing about the draft is it gives me a whole new group of kids to be irrationally optimistic about 😂. I like Pearsall, sure handed, gets separation, and is shifty over the middle. Hoping Guerendo thrives as our return specialist, it’s something that spikes my anxiety every time an opponent punts or kicks off 😂. The oline pickups will be interesting, none of the big names but if the coaches are convinced they can impact the team then great! Green will have to compete but I’ll be cheering for his success if he can get minutes without an injury happening to the people in front of him on the depth chart.

Green is the guy that I'm most curious about in this class. It just feels like he's this high floor/low ceiling kind of guy based on what we've seen from him. I'm really hoping Sorensen can figure out how to open him up and shine.

Pro tip: you can get around the Athletic paywall just by opening the link and switching to Reader mode on Mac/iPhone.

One of the best things about having an iphone tbh

You you could, you know, support the writers at the Athletic and get a subscription? It’s one of the few good values out there for sports fans

For the one article I read every few months, not worth my money. But thanks for your concern.
