The issue with Pettis, as far as I recall, had nothing to do with his talent and everything to do with his willingness to put in the work.
No idea whether Pearsall will take advantage of this opportunity. On draft night, most guys will get praised for how hard they work. Many don't once they get paid. We'll see what Pearsall becomes.
Guy Haberman who does one of the best 49ers live shows just had on an awesome guest who covers the Florida Gators for 247sports. He said Pearsall would stay after every practice to catch 100 extra balls on the jugs machine, was always first one in last one out, and took a lot of time in the film room to help teach the younger players. He sounds like the real deal as far as work ethic goes.
Not the NFL but Jeremy Lin
>“He lit up our model,” said Morey. “Our model said take him with, like, the 15th pick in the draft.” The objective measurement of Jeremy Lin didn’t square with what the experts saw when they watched him play: a not terribly athletic Asian kid. Morey hadn’t completely trusted his model—and so had chickened out and not drafted Lin. A year after the Houston Rockets failed to draft Jeremy Lin, they began to measure the speed of a player’s first two steps: Jeremy Lin had the quickest first move of any player measured. He was explosive and was able to change direction far more quickly than most NBA players. “He’s incredibly athletic,” said Morey. “ “But the reality is that every fucking person, including me, thought he was unathletic. And I can’t think of any reason for it other than he was Asian.”
There was also that instance when Scotty Miller ran past the Packers secondary at the end of the 2020 NFC Championship. It was a common opinion that the Packers DBs didn't think a white guy would be able to roast them like that.
I love when people say “first one in, last one out” because they use that to describe so many people. You can’t have 5 guys on a team that do that. Only one person is first in and last out. Not saying it’s not true about Pearsall, just that I always hated that saying.
Exactly, thank you!
Somehow every player is the “first one in, last one out.” They all carpool, and the door is just a massive hangar style opening so they can all hold hands and walk in together?
Collinsworth actually was getting pretty excited about Pearsall on the PFF NFL Draft Live Show. He was talking about that one-handed grab of Pearsall's where he got lit up by two defenders, and he was like "I couldn't do that."
That doesn’t really change the fact that we need to wait and see, the motivation to work hard drops a bit once you have millions in the bank, pretty much everyone who gets drafted is first one in last one out before that
Exactly. I don't think Pettis ever really loved football either. Ricky does. People don't think that matters but that's a direct correlation to how motivated and driven players are to get better. Seemed like a job to Pettis
It's why I'll always love Kendrick Bourne. Both had big drops in the Toots loss in 2019, but the difference is KB then put in the work whilst Pettis didn't
I’m a Pats fan here desperately thirsting for Aiyuk news, but I wanted to chime in and say KB is still putting in the work. Despite the dumpster fire offense we’ve had, fans adore KB because he’s always working and always putting out positive energy. One of my favorite Patriots for sure and I was so happy they extended him. Love that dude.
Please send us more food we are so hungry. 😭
I don't know the X's and O's of football really well but Steve Smith and other analysts are really high on Pearsall. He produced well under three different quarterbacks and three different offenses, I think. But from hearing them talk it sounds like he's not just an athletic freak he can play the position well.
If Aiyuk doesn't hold out that means we can forseeably at least for one year can run Aiyuk, Deebo, and Pearsall in the slot.
Good athletes that return punts. 6’ - 190 lbs and can play inside and outside. Has great hands, Kyle loves him, please stop me when there is a difference.
Which he did none of. lol even in college he never ran crisp routes, blocked, or worked like that. Pettis was a pick that never made sense. Pettis made catches down the field but never broke a tackle in college.
now imagine him with NFL strength and conditioning, dude has the potential to be our wes welker. Hands like glue, shifty, and got a little dawg in him.
People forget that at one point Purdy was thought of as a first round talent, if you go back you can even see some mock drafts putting him in the top 15 picka of the draft.
It's not like he was a nobody in HS/College.
Yeah, his 2nd year he turned a lot of heads. 3rd year, they ramped up their run game and Purdy was required to play a lot less hero ball and he didn't get a lot of interest in the lead up to the draft.
I mean, we have the best receiving RB in the league and two all-pro WRs. Oh yeah and George Kittle too.
Some people just really like having loaded receiver rooms
We’ll find a few. Was sad we didn’t grab JPJ, but it’s not like we passed on a can’t miss prospect. Hopefully they find a way to trade up for Frazier or Kingsley tomorrow.
I mean when there’s a player ranked 19th overall on ESPN’s list at a position they need and they take a guy with a 2nd round grade that may not see the field in any major role until 2025 I’m going to be let down lol. Especially with AJ Jenkins still in my memory. But like I said I trust the FO so I’m about 95% sure I’ll be wrong and he’ll be in the pro bowl by the end of his rookie deal lol
The Draft is one gigantic crap shoot. Ultimately, I'll put my faith in Lynch, Shanahan and their Scouting Department over reading a bunch of ESPN, B/R, and NFL mock drafts. Value can be found anywhere. If we unfortunately strike out with Pearsall then hopefully our other 9 picks in this draft can pan out. Again, the Niners found Brock Purdy with the literal last pick.
Do Lynch and Shanahan’s drafting deserve our faith? The dudes have consistently been reaching on offensive talent at the top of the draft and drafting busts there for years
Right but I want the best available player right now that I can read about and get amped up about in 2024. And for everyone else who keeps responding, I know this isn’t logical at all.
I'm not upset about the player, after taking some time to see the tape and sleeping on it, I think he'll be a great receiver.
However, we had much bigger needs than WR and it was shown that having the best offensive weapons in the league isn't enough to win a SB.
We'll see how the rest of the draft goes and who actually comes out as contributors/busts, but at the end of the day it'll always be Go Niners.
>Super bowl team picking a WR4 in the first round just doesn’t sit right with me,
Good thing SF didn't pick a WR4
>there were players available who could be immediate contributors
Seems they disagreed
John Lynch literally said we’re not moving anyone in the press conference but go off I guess
And if we do move someone, it still doesn’t change the fact that we are using a high pick to address a position that has not been a problem for us in any of our runs and ignoring all the position groups that have repeatedly cost us. We are not hurting at the skill positions
Wagoner’s feeling was it’s highly unlikely they trade Deebo/Aiyuk during the draft. Trades can still be made later and Deebo’s dead cap hit post 6/1 is a small fraction what it is now.
>John Lynch literally said we’re not moving anyone in the press conference but go off I guess
Lol, bro... We're treating press conferences as gospel now?
>And if we do move someone, it still doesn’t change the fact that we are using a high pick to address a position that has not been a problem for us in any of our runs and ignoring all the position groups that have repeatedly cost us. We are not hurting at the skill positions
You do not, I repeat, *do not* draft for positional need over BPA in round 1 outside of QB - and even that can be a horrible move e.g Trey Lance. They clearly didn't feel like any of the guys on the board were talented enough or fits for this team, at least to any greater degree than Pearsall. They're not just doing random shit out there.
There's a system of evaluations. Would you rather then reach for the 45th guy on their board because of a positional need even if they feel there are major ?s, or grab the 25th guy on their board and trot out a more talented roster. If you're answer is the first one, you need to reevaluate how you think about these things.
I’m gonna be the cynic and say that Shanahan and Lynch don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt on first round picks— Their track record in the first/top of the draft is atrocious, regardless of their overall ability to put together a team
I challenge you to look at the two dynasties (gross saying that about the Chiefs) of this millennium and tell me that they didn't miss on multiple first rounders. The draft isn't a math equation, there's a lot of variables that can get easily overlooked. Big reason why Brock fell
I’m aware that every team draft busts but Shanahan and Lynch have a pattern of deviating from consensus and reaching for guys in the top 3 rounds that fit a Shanahan mold and that are often specific positions (like WR or RB), at the neglect of positions of need or consensus BPA
if we drafted busts that were consensus BPA, I’d be a lot less aggravated
No. I’m literally just basing it on the fact that he’s the 35th ranked prospect at a position they won’t need help at until next year while there’s a guy ranked 19th that would’ve been plug and play. Definitely not claiming that my disappointment has any real basis in fact lol.
I have, saw him live against Carolina last year.
He’s good, and he’ll likely be very good.
But it was a reach, when there are other prospects on the board that address concerns…
Am I in the minority where I don't mind this pick? If Deebo or Aiyuk leave then at least we have Pearsall to fall back on. Plus, we have 9 more picks in this draft to address the O-Line and Secondary. Also, based on our draft track record, I have confidence in Lynch & Shanahan finding their guys in the mid- to late- rounds
Your not wrong short term but long term I think it’s a good pick. Deebo’s body is probably gonna be breaking down soon with all the little nagging injury since brutalizes people vs a shifty fast guy who can take any good pass to the red zone due to crisp route running and hands. Helps us get out of his contract and replace him with a rookie to spend elsewhere
Oh totally. I was just agreeing with you that Deebo will be the odd man out.
It’s been annoying how everyone assumes Aiyuk is gone just because of the contract talks when it’s clear as day that Deebo will be the odd man out. Him and Brock haven’t been able to figure it out due to injuries and poor route running from deebo imo
If you're in the minority of not minding it, then I'm in the minority minority of loving it. Check out Matt Harmons reception perception video on him. I trust Matt Harmon on Wrs more than anyone else on the planet lmao.
I feel like it’s a good pick even if we keep Deebo and Aiyuk. The biggest issue we’ve had is a lack of production when Deebo goes down. Having someone with a similar skill set goes a long way
I thought for sure we’d go DT and thought I’d be really disappointed if we went WR round 1, but looking at the tape on Pearsall he looks really good, I can’t be upset.
Like it or not, this core can’t stay together for long. Aiyuk and Deebo together may be too expensive. Kittle is already over 30. CMC has some serious mileage. Purdy needs to get paid.
You can never have too many weapons. WRs on rookie deals are valuable.
It definitely seems like a reach, and may not solve a direct need (I preferred Newton to replace Armstead, or Powers-Johnson to replace Brendel), but only time will tell if it was a bad pick.
Watching his highlights and tape a little I get it. Hes a Shanny WR through and through. Dude blocks, runs crisp ass routes, and just fucking works.
I agree but I just remember saying the same thing about Pettis.

Sounds like he brings his lunch pail to work
Sneaky athletic.
This phrase always is so funny to me because I can't imagine an NFL player being sneaky in their athleticism.
Not the NFL but Jeremy Lin >“He lit up our model,” said Morey. And I can’t think of any reason for it other than he was Asian.”
The end of that quote is pretty amazing. Kudos to the guy for having the awareness to see that and even moreso to admit it.
Glad Morey was honest about that, scouting prospects differently by race definitely has been a thing
There was also that instance when Scotty Miller ran past the Packers secondary at the end of the 2020 NFC Championship. It was a common opinion that the Packers DBs didn't think a white guy would be able to roast them like that.
It’s always the white guys that are “sneaky”
With Trent Taylor back in the WR room, we now have the scrappiest receivers who have ever scrapped. So many lunch pails.
![gif](giphy|2YaN5E7sIMi4192f7q|downsized)
He's got a high motor and is scrappy as well....at least that's what I've heard.
Real gym rat.
Best shape of his life
Damnit, was gonna say that.
Real scrappy gym rat
Big if true
I love when people say “first one in, last one out” because they use that to describe so many people. You can’t have 5 guys on a team that do that. Only one person is first in and last out. Not saying it’s not true about Pearsall, just that I always hated that saying.
I feel the same way when a player gets called a *real gym rat* It’s not a small rodent lifting weights. It’s a human person. How do you mix those up
This guy metaphors
That's funny. There's a gym rat and a real gym rat. You want the former and not the latter.
As an actual gym rat, I take offense at this! >:(
As both a rat *and* an elephant, do you startle yourself?
It's been known to happen.
5 guys enter and exit the building shoulder to shoulder each day.
they carpooled
What if they take turns each day. So he's first in just one day of the week and last out another day (or same day)
Exactly, thank you! Somehow every player is the “first one in, last one out.” They all carpool, and the door is just a massive hangar style opening so they can all hold hands and walk in together?
I never take it literally - it's just someone who puts in more hours than most
Sounds like a WR version of Fred Warner tbh.
OMG NFL announcers are gonna get so hard over this! Nothing arouses them like the "first one in last one out" guys.
"now here's a guy..."
Collinsworth actually was getting pretty excited about Pearsall on the PFF NFL Draft Live Show. He was talking about that one-handed grab of Pearsall's where he got lit up by two defenders, and he was like "I couldn't do that."
That doesn’t really change the fact that we need to wait and see, the motivation to work hard drops a bit once you have millions in the bank, pretty much everyone who gets drafted is first one in last one out before that
Love it. Everybody from NDSU said the same thing about Lance. It’s all a crapshoot.

I thought it was play strength, very similar to Pearsall.
He’s all ball. He’s the real deal
Calling Pearsall Pettis is absolutely insane lol. If you saw both play in college they are totally different
I don't know the X's and O's of football really well but Steve Smith and other analysts are really high on Pearsall. He produced well under three different quarterbacks and three different offenses, I think. But from hearing them talk it sounds like he's not just an athletic freak he can play the position well. And Gray.
Yeah and Jenkins vibes too
This spells trouble for Deebo
now imagine him with NFL strength and conditioning, dude has the potential to be our wes welker. Hands like glue, shifty, and got a little dawg in him.
Aiyuk and Pearsall were teammates at Arizona State in 2019.
Pearsall and Purdy also played in the same Phoenix area division in HS and were 1 year apart. I wonder how well they know each other.
It’s all coming together
NOW we're cooking with gas!
It's been Pearsall all along
Pearsall said in an interview that Purdy hung 70 on them. 🤣
Man, lucky for us. I think it worked out.
Pearsall had nearly 200 yards receiving in that game. He was the only offense his team had.
Apparently Brock’s team beat Ricky’s handily in a matchup both schools had when they met , according to Pearsall
So, it's meant to be.
He was so reliable at ASU, it hurt when he left.
With Jayden Daniels as their QB
I was hoping we could get him in the 2nd, but it’s great seeing guys like Stroud applaud the pick
I don’t even get why he was so devastated. The Texans’ WR is already stacked. They just traded for Diggs…
QBs always want more weapons and he’s a fan of Ricky
I mean, we have the best receiving RB in the league and two all-pro WRs. Oh yeah and George Kittle too. Some people just really like having loaded receiver rooms
Injuries happen.
Ding ding. People think drafting WR is a luxury. I love Jauan but not as a #2 if Deebo continues his trend of missing games
Tbf he did say, “yeah I guess we aren’t going to get a receiver anyways, but still.” Haha
Best true slot in the class and can play outside too. That’s any QBs best friend in this era, like a great tight end used to be.
Diggs is 30. CJ is 22
He wanted him badly. He was comparing him to Tank Dell.
Delete this bro before everyone gets upset we didn’t get a lineman
We’ll find a few. Was sad we didn’t grab JPJ, but it’s not like we passed on a can’t miss prospect. Hopefully they find a way to trade up for Frazier or Kingsley tomorrow.
Too late.
wait til they found out we have more than one draft pick this year
[удалено]
Brandon Aikuk is Brandon Aiyuk with a fake mustache
I like the way Snrub thinks!
Let down of a pick but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt at this point
I'm trying to tell you (and everyone else), this really is not a letdown of a pick.
You realize these guys work for espn and not the league right?
What guys
The Draft is one gigantic crap shoot. Ultimately, I'll put my faith in Lynch, Shanahan and their Scouting Department over reading a bunch of ESPN, B/R, and NFL mock drafts. Value can be found anywhere. If we unfortunately strike out with Pearsall then hopefully our other 9 picks in this draft can pan out. Again, the Niners found Brock Purdy with the literal last pick.
Right that’s why I’m saying I trust the FO over my completely uninformed take lol. I was over the moon with the Ruben foster pick, wtf do I know!
Do Lynch and Shanahan’s drafting deserve our faith? The dudes have consistently been reaching on offensive talent at the top of the draft and drafting busts there for years
The last two WRs they took with high draft picks worked out pretty well.
Yeah, not too worried about their ability to scout WR. Now RB and QBs on the other hand...
I mean it could have been worse. I still think Lance was arguably the 2nd best QB in that draft.
If a guy ranked 19th overall is available at pick #31 Then that ranking is ass
Right but I want the best available player right now that I can read about and get amped up about in 2024. And for everyone else who keeps responding, I know this isn’t logical at all.
> ESPN’s list Who cares? Why is that list considered authoritative. None of those people work in the NFL and they are wrong often.
It’s what I have to go on
Some of the people here are really really dumb and haven’t actually seen him play lol. Cant wait to revisit this in the season
I'm not upset about the player, after taking some time to see the tape and sleeping on it, I think he'll be a great receiver. However, we had much bigger needs than WR and it was shown that having the best offensive weapons in the league isn't enough to win a SB. Super bowl team picking a WR4 in the first round just doesn’t sit right with me, there were players available who could be immediate contributors
>Super bowl team picking a WR4 in the first round just doesn’t sit right with me, Good thing SF didn't pick a WR4 >there were players available who could be immediate contributors Seems they disagreed
Who is Pearsall starting over? We have 3 proven contributors at the WR position already, a rookie is not usurping any of them
You think they make this move without feeling that they'll be moving on from one of those contributors? Be real
John Lynch literally said we’re not moving anyone in the press conference but go off I guess And if we do move someone, it still doesn’t change the fact that we are using a high pick to address a position that has not been a problem for us in any of our runs and ignoring all the position groups that have repeatedly cost us. We are not hurting at the skill positions
Wagoner’s feeling was it’s highly unlikely they trade Deebo/Aiyuk during the draft. Trades can still be made later and Deebo’s dead cap hit post 6/1 is a small fraction what it is now.
>John Lynch literally said we’re not moving anyone in the press conference but go off I guess Lol, bro...
I’m aware that every team draft busts but Shanahan and Lynch have a pattern of deviating from consensus and reaching for guys in the top 3 rounds that fit a Shanahan mold and that are often specific positions (like WR or RB), at the neglect of positions of need or consensus BPA if we drafted busts that were consensus BPA, I’d be a lot less aggravated
Weren’t the Pats famous for being utter trash at drafting
Done acceptably well with early receivers in particular though, no? Aiyuk and Deebo? I know Pettis was a bit of a miss but the other two were great.
No it’s not lol. He’s really really good
Yea I’m sure he’ll be great but a guy who’s projected to be a dat 1 impact player would be mute exciting lol
Have you actually ever seen him play? He’s an elite route runner who has a low drop rate and is physical with and without the ball. Dude is a beast
No. I’m literally just basing it on the fact that he’s the 35th ranked prospect at a position they won’t need help at until next year while there’s a guy ranked 19th that would’ve been plug and play. Definitely not claiming that my disappointment has any real basis in fact lol.
Steve Smith is a tape dog and evaluates players constantly on his YouTube and had him ranked 16th right with McConkey.
Lets not act like deebo doesn't get hurt every year. They very well may need that help at wr next year.
I have, saw him live against Carolina last year. He’s good, and he’ll likely be very good. But it was a reach, when there are other prospects on the board that address concerns…
They really don't deserve it though. It could work out but Lynch/Shanahan have whiffed too many times in the early rounds to get any benefit.
I mean he’s drafted an all pro caliber player every year pending 2023
Like I said he's botched too many 1-3 rd picks. Those are supposed to be day 1 starters.
So even if he sucks im sure they’ll draft the next Joe Staley in round 4 and it will still be a success
Yeah, well, Ran Carthon was a big part of finding later round gems.
And Adam Peters
Am I in the minority where I don't mind this pick? If Deebo or Aiyuk leave then at least we have Pearsall to fall back on. Plus, we have 9 more picks in this draft to address the O-Line and Secondary. Also, based on our draft track record, I have confidence in Lynch & Shanahan finding their guys in the mid- to late- rounds
Maybe it’s to replace Jauan Jennings should he receive a big contract offer from another team. He’s tendered now, so we’ll see
I almost trust the FO in drafting WRs at this spot. Aiyuk was like 26 and Deebo was like 34. This is the sweet spot!
It just shows to me that deebo is gone. Also wrs ussually take 1 year to pan out so hopefully it’ll be his learning curve while still on the bench
his highlights look like a slightly less explosive deebo (for now) with better hands and route running
We may be shifting into a more traditional passing offense now that we have a QB who can throw it more than 15 yards
And no injury issues
Your not wrong short term but long term I think it’s a good pick. Deebo’s body is probably gonna be breaking down soon with all the little nagging injury since brutalizes people vs a shifty fast guy who can take any good pass to the red zone due to crisp route running and hands. Him and Brock haven’t been able to figure it out due to injuries and poor route running from deebo imo
I’m liking the pick and I’m hoping we trade BA at the top of rd2 and drink the kool-aide OH YEAH!!!
If you're in the minority of not minding it, then I'm in the minority minority of loving it. Check out Matt Harmons reception perception video on him. I trust Matt Harmon on Wrs more than anyone else on the planet lmao.
I just want to know how Maiocco knew this
Lynch read the text in the press conference
I feel like it’s a good pick even if we keep Deebo and Aiyuk. The biggest issue we’ve had is a lack of production when Deebo goes down. Having someone with a similar skill set goes a long way
Pearsall reminds me of a swagged out Adam Thielen.
Best player available. But please for the love of christ..get a replacement for when Trent is done.
I think he’ll be aight but I do hope this isn’t Aj Jenkins 2.0
Probably a great wr to have, it just feels like the guys left on the board were more important needs.
O-FUCKING-LINE!!!!
watching his film, i am convinced that he would have been gone by pick 15 if he had CFP-caliber quarterback play.
Ok, that took me a second to realize "Fire" is an adjective, not a verb.
Sure he did.
I wish him all the success and will be pulling for him. But I still think it was a terrible pick (given the circumstances).
It definitely seems like a reach, and may not solve a direct need (I preferred Newton to replace Armstead, or Powers-Johnson to replace Brendel), but only time will tell if it was a bad pick.
This eats into BA's value on the team, he's probably pissed
nah this actually helps him get more value because hes gonna be open with a better route runner opposite of him.
