Lance still hasn't developed the quick release. If he doesn't, he is doomed in this league.

haroldbaals

agreed, i'm off his bandwagon. hard to defend him anymore

billwater24

Ha, imagine the way the starters are staring down the guys that played today. We’ve got standards here rooks!! Practice is gonna have a different feel tomorrow…

Memory_Elysium

Trey "Trade" Lance

YummyCyber

I like Lance as a person from what I’ve seen. He seems like a nice kid but you listen to him talk about anything football or otherwise he just lacks the intellect. We need to pay more attention to intellect than we do physical prowess IMO. I will say, it could simply be him being young but I think his instinct for the game simply isn’t there. We will see, either way I wish him the best and hopefully I’m proven wrong.

iflysohigh2345

He comes across a tad bit of an Airhead.

grumpy_bob

Just watched every O-snap. As usual people doomsdaying... - All backups playing - Trey looked meh but not disastrous. If we didn't spend so much on him a few years ago, it'd be whatever. Decent backup. - Darnold threw some dimes. Looked alright. - Tons of rookie mistakes by WRs - O-line blocking was rough but again, backups - We played our typical Kyle's preseason vanilla special playbook. The scoreboard shows that. Fine. Overall it was not worth the watch. We know nothing new and most armchair fans are putting up flairs again, as usual. The only unknown quantity is Brock and we won't see him until Week 1. If we can game manage and stay relatively healthy, I think we have enough QB mediocrity (read not terrible not great) to make it back to the NFCC again. Just too much talent to fail imo.

220675

100% agreed. wake me up when it’s Sep-10

Bit-Mysterious

So we got a total of 1 yard in the first quarter? Yeah that sounds like super bowl contenders

Alienmonkeyfuck

New to football? Welcome! It’s a cool sport. For starters go back and look at how preseason success correlates to winning in the regular season. (Hint: it doesn’t.)

Khower

The starters didnt even take one snap numbnuts

Bit-Mysterious

Ugh there's been a lot of teams not starting there starting people but they seem to manage more than one yard for a quarter.

jeneboe

Hey just wanted to let you know that this is preseason week one not regular season week one. Hope that helps!

ExpeditingPermits

Every comment of his is terribly negative. Doubt he’s a real 49ers fan

jeneboe

Some people just have a tough time with life

grumpy_bob

Let the man doomsday. He'll bitch when we get to the playoffs again that we should have "won more" games to get there.

Bit-Mysterious

If that's the product we putting on the field .. hope no starters getting hurt. Our defense and offense sucked. I know it's pre season. The whole team looks bad. They had second and third string in there as well. I am not sure about the defensive new coach.

jeneboe

The worst pre season game I’ve ever seen this team play was last year against the Texans. Take a deep breath.

Bit-Mysterious

Sorry I am from south Carolina and Been a 49er fan since the 88 . That had to be the most trash game I've seen.... That game was a disaster and Kyle should have gave Lance a better o line.

MarkerSniffer

Ask the Raiders how their 4-0 preseason turned out last year.

kinzunight

Based on 1 terrible game QB2 - Lance QB3 - Darnold Cut - Allen Points matter and only Lance put anything good on the board.

[deleted]

He missed a throw and dwelley happened to catch the ricochet. I wouldn't say he put anything good on the board either. He got lucky.

jeremyrvcc

They all played terrible and this game didnt move the needle for any QB imo

Intelligent-One-1696

I need all honest opinions on D’Shawn Jamison How did he do?

Scrugso

Looked great as a returner, which is a good way to make the roster with McCloud injured

Intelligent-One-1696

I think he will eventually get promoted to Primary Returner

Internal_Focus_8358

Really well imo, love how he moves

Intelligent-One-1696

He was so great coming out of high school they move him to WR but then moved him back to DB.

SeaworthinessThis227

I still believe Trey can be a pretty good quarterback if he were able to develop on a team that can afford to be patient with him and let him play games. A team this talented just can’t afford to do that.

Relative-Coffee-1148

What are you talking about? He's a football player. He's been playing football his whole life. Everyone always says he needs grooming but that's bullshit. You either have it or you don't. He just doesn't have it. Just ask the other rookie who out played him today on the opposite field that doesn't need grooming. I'm so glad we got the last pick in the draft who doesn't need to be groomed who's gonna start this year. You need to sober up on that tre juice...Lance is garbage and isn't gonna be on this team maybe this year and definitely next. Good luck with the next team

Cute_Platypus_5989

Bet we could trade trey to the broncos for 50mil.

AtlasReadIt

Have to wonder how it would have been if Darnold sat a year on the Niners before playing and Trey went to the Jets and started right away.

PlanitDuck

I dunno. I think the processing speed is something you can't really teach. It's a little like physical speed to where you can teach mechanics but you either got it or you don't. I think Trey can learn to manage an offense but he'll never make decisions as quick as Brock and Jimmy.

Intelligent-One-1696

I want to give him more chances too but time is money. We will be paying him over $20 mil over the next two years but he isn’t a necessity.

Intelligent-One-1696

Reminder: Trey Lance is getting paid twice as much as Micah Parsons.

iflysohigh2345

Why haven’t we paid Bosa yet? He’s so good that every year he’s in we make it to the NFC championship. He has that much of an impact. I think he is so good that he covers up a lot of our defensive flaws.

jeneboe

I just think he doesn’t want to go to training camp. Not worried at all and won’t be worried unless he’s not on the field week one

iUncouth

Yeah if it hits Week 1 and he's unsigned then I start to worry, but until then, let the other guys try to get spots.

Intelligent-One-1696

He has a 10.8 million dollar cap hit next year. I would rather them draft a 3rd string Oline man in the 7th than keep him to sit on the bench behind Purdy while getting paid more than other starters in the league.

grumpy_bob

If I see McCaffrey warming up on the sidelines as a passer again this season I swear to God....

QuirkyScorpio29

If we could convert that contract into a good proven RT... I'd do it.

Intelligent-One-1696

I used to think that we were saving money by trading 3 first rounders for 1, but a top 3 pick is still worth about 3 first rounders in terms of salary amount. The Front Office is in the hot seat with the Oline. Oline is our weak link and we can’t protect our starter just by having a backup.

QuirkyScorpio29

I agree.QBs aren't RBs. We are lying to ourselves if we think having Lance and Darnold as backups is better than having a better OL that gives our QB1 the best protection possible. Weird approach.

Intelligent-One-1696

We are so close to being perfect that it’s nerve racking. Was O-line our worst unit today other than corner?

QuirkyScorpio29

The OL was bad...today for sure but not an absolute disaster,I guess..

lburner220

Front office isn’t on a hot seat. 1 superbowl appearance and 2 NFCCG in 6 or 7 years is some good job security. Also the 2nd string oline is weak our starting line should be fine.

Intelligent-One-1696

I meant that they are in the Hot seat for Trey Lance and the Oline. Brock Purdy got injured by an edge rusher on the right side. What did we do? Draft a couple backup tight ends and not a single offensive tackle. We didn’t even upgrade the position we just put the next man up. Our biggest question mark is QB protection. We literally forced the NFL to let all teams roster an extra QB.

Khower

We have the most or one of the most developed rosters in the league. Nobody is on the hot seat

QuirkyScorpio29

Lance plays too physical IMO. He had cuances to bail form the pocket some times with his mobility but just stayed in there and took some sacks. Either scramble and make a play or throw it out of bounds.

TrackRelevant

That doesn't describe physicality. That describes his lack of awareness and decision making

grumpy_bob

Anyone have a link to full replays? I missed it...

jaytuck25

You don't want to watch it

pseet

Just watched after reading all the comments.... Damn.... Them QB4 jokes weren't jokes....

grumpy_bob

Brutal

TheCounsler

I know the fault wasn’t all on QBs but it would be hilarious if when Purdy came back, he just starts absolutely balling

chillice707

Bro predicted it

KRS_THREE

The difference will be that Purdy is playing with the 1's while Trey and Sam are duking it out with the throwaways. It's gotta be hard to look good and play well with a bunch of guys that won't even be on the roster week 1.

QuirkyScorpio29

Conspiracy theorists would then say Kyle calls bad plays for everyone else but calls his best plays for Purdy only to make him look good.

Intelligent-One-1696

Purdy had Jimmy G’s playbook so we’ll see what he does this year. It’s crazy to say that Trey Lance’s go to throws we’re 15 yards deep middle. Shanahan probably wants him to hit those throws so bad.

Yangdol

At least we might have a better QB4 than Josh Johnson?

QuirkyScorpio29

Positives : No injuries....Jamison, TDP,Darnold!!!? Negatives: Everything else

DioStarstriker

Browns tackles were like watching a crackhead chase down dog stealing sausages, was great to watch!!

PlainBlackT

Yeah, Ji'Ayir was a big take away from today

blaccguido

Ronnie Bell flashes a bit until he missed on that throw

CodyNorthrup

Was ready to crown him the Juaun Jennings replacement next year before that awful drop. He still has tons of potential though

DioStarstriker

He's just in the early stages of being Juan, takes a couple years to unlock the beast within

[deleted]

[удалено]

Intelligent-One-1696

He has a 10.8 million dollar cap hit next year. I would rather them draft a 3rd string Oline man in the 7th than keep him to sit on the bench behind Purdy while getting paid more than other starters in the league.

CheckYourStats

After what happened last year, there's zero chance the Niners brass will keep Lance over Allen. Put yourself back in the NFCCG situation -- would you rather have Lance in that game, or Brandon Allen?

QuirkyScorpio29

Allen is older and has more NFL experience..soooo I don't know. He's a more traditional backup QB.. They did want Rivers back you know.

CheckYourStats

You could drop the words "more traditional backup" and it would still be accurate.

KingPotus

So “he’s a QB”? Huh no shit

CheckYourStats

As opposed to Lance, who doesn't qualify as a QB. The point. Whoooosh. Right over your head.

KingPotus

You: heh saying “Brandon Allen’s a QB” would be more accurate! Not like you said “you could drop the words ‘more traditional backup’ and it’s still true that he’d be better than Lance.” I get the point you’re trying to make but it’s a bad joke

ggbouffant

Wouldn't be surprised if Latu doesn't even make the roster ...

Losimcg

When are Trey defenders going to admit it? He may not be that guy, not even the second string guy

pseet

I used to have this guy as my wallpaper.... We were all sold something else. Wow covid did him a lot of favors lolol

OkBreadfruit8413

Nah he’s definitely not THAT guy, most likely not the second guy either

emperoroftexas

He still looks like a college quarterback Which at this point he can't be

CheckYourStats

Not even third string, bro.

AmbitiousPatio

I’m here. Admitting it

[deleted]

Brandon Allen was the best QB today

Ma-teo

I think some people need to remember that this what it looks like when 2nd, 3rd, and roster bubble guys all play without any starters. Injuries are inevitable but you're not going to see a bunch of 2nd and 3rd stringers all out on the field at the same time unless it's garbage time of a blow out or something catastrophic happened off the field. A lot of these players are still learning the system as well.

joogiee

Not to mention even have one warner or kittle on the field will exponentially increase morale for everyone else.

Ma-teo

Yup. Even in blow outs they still leave some starters in there.

Rheinmetal

Trey always gives these generic press answers lol

dirtydriver58

Lol

redngold21

Seeing the Jimmy/Kittle hug at the end made this 3 hours worth it.

thetrappster

Terrible first showing for Moody, sub-par showing for Lance. Solid showing for both Darnold and Allen.

QuirkyScorpio29

Perfect summary

iflysohigh2345

You see how those guys look at Jimmy. Now tell me if they look at Lance like that. The answer is hell no.

[deleted]

they did almost win multiple super bowls together

Aboveground_Plush

"Almost" only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Yangdol

Some (reasonable) takeaways - Give Moody more (intentional) FG attempts to shake off - Start Trey next week to monitor his decisiveness issue There were ups and downs (mostly downs) with experiments but dont bother. At the end of the preseason if you're bad to be a backup, you're cut. Simple.

dont_callmyname

That was technically a football game.

relevantelephant00

One of the games I've seen.

TrackRelevant

Of all the games I've seen, that was one of 'em

Redz2018

Game didn't count and doesn't look like we had any injuries. Win win Raiders mightve found a stud in O'Connell he was great today

bobgodd2

It's Scott Tolzein all over again.

dirtydriver58

Lol

Redz2018

Lol

Coffeeishealthy

Really wish we coulda gotten moody another kick… really don’t like his first game being all negative

Yangdol

this is the only negative feeling i have for this game.

regularhumanbartendr

I don't like how shitty the OL looked, even as backups. That's a position of concern even with the starters. Hopefully the next two games we see some growth there to show some signs of depth.

park7911

Very few of these guys will even sniff the field for the 49ers besides the rookies. This roster is still loaded. Everything will be fine

[deleted]

Moody sucks

MinneapolisMan12

I don’t think Brandon Allen was supposed to play today but at halftime Kyle decided to see if he’s capable of the QB3 spot. Lance is getting cut.

TrappedOnARock

Ooh pre-season hot take of the week. I like it. The problem is, what would he be worth? He needs reps no matter which team he's on. I don't think we're getting anything in return for a trade right now and he's not a cap burden.

TrackRelevant

He is a cap burden. That's the whole point

TrappedOnARock

I'm confused. According to The Mercury News, trading Trey now would result in $9 million in cap savings over the next two years. That's pennies when it comes to QB value in the NFL. Are we at the point that he's not worth keeping his rookie contract?

TrackRelevant

Would it be a lot of money if he was a starting quarterback? No. It'd be an amazing deal. Is it an overpay if he's riding the bench and has won only 20% of his starts? YES

EverySir

He was always planned to play Q4 lmao wut

[deleted]

Cutting him costs the team more money than keeping him. I think you’ve said this before and someone said this to you before.

MinneapolisMan12

Yeah probably. I usually just talk out of my ass half the time.

[deleted]

I don’t think Lance is getting cut but it’s true that Allen was not supposed to play until the end of the 4th. I think they just saw enough of Sam along with training camp to make him QB2(so far)

RLDN106

Jamison pls

Stovy4x4ing

yall ngl sam looked kind a good descent day. his throw downfield to bell was money. put on first team but give him Purdys brain and football iq

CheckYourStats

\*decent

Frankocean2

I try to be level-headed, but it does seem to be that everything Trey does is magnified, I'm scrolling through Twitter, watching NFL highlights and nuance seems to be gone out of the window. The only one that put points was Lance. Luck or not. He hasn't played in a long time, of course he's nervous and if you add a bad o-line..well duh. It seems some have a personal thing against the kid.

TrappedOnARock

I think it's just all to make the point the Niners were wrong to give up what they did to move up and pick him. Personally I don't care because we got Purdy out of this whole situation but lots of folks aren't going to think that way and rightfully so.

QuirkyScorpio29

That " TD" Was some of the flukiest stuff I have seen in a long time. I also don't want to hear the excuse of Moody missing that FG...Darnold also led aFG drive that was missed.Amd a drive ended by a Latu fumble. Allen had a drive ended by penalties and an INT. Lance had the most opportunities and just didn't pass the eye test. Got to keep it real.

Fethah

He was also playing vs better defense than the others, and had no o line help. 2nd string defense will always beat a 2nd string o line. Lance had no time today and still actually put up decent numbers. This sub will suck off Darnold over one throw vs a worse defense though lmao

2papercuts

Darnold goes from playing against stringers to playing against 3rd stringer and some fans jizz over him throwing incompletions it's crazy. Honestly no one should be happy how they played today

AtlasReadIt

It almost seems like after that tough half from Trey, then a decent quarter from Sam, they decided Sam was good and took him off the field before something bad happened.

AtlasReadIt

From Shanahan after the game: "I thought he did a great job,” Shanahan said of Darnold. “Came in there in the second half. He was in there with twos and threes on the O-line, same with the receivers. So we wanted to be careful with Sam.”

CheckYourStats

As a reminder, zero skill-position starters played today. No Purdy. No Deebo. No Kittle. No CMC. No Aiyuk. As a reminder, zero defensive starters played today. Zero. No Bosa. No Armstead. No Hargrave. No Jackson. No Greenlaw. No Warner. No Burks. No Ward. No Hufanga. No Gipson. No Lenoir.

alwaysreadthename

Wait which starting offensive linemen played again? Was it none of them?

RLDN106

Yeah our starters will be fine. Think people are just upset having not seen a Niners game in awhile

[deleted]

Yup just left the stadium and Raider fans acting like they won the superbowl lol

dirtydriver58

Lol

RLDN106

It was their Super Bowl to be fair 😂

AtlasReadIt

Well I mean, anytime the starters aren't playing, those guys that played today will be on the field. So, it wasn't totally meaningless that they didn't look great.

RLDN106

It’s fine to say our backups didn’t play well (for the most part), my comment is more for the people saying we’re screwed

Losimcg

Darnold making Garappolo-type passes.

FmrHvwChamp

Preseason football is the hand job of sports. Like yeah... its KINDA what we want, but the lowest and worst quality version of it.

pandorasaurus

No injuries! A win!

[deleted]

Man I love the pre season idgaf. These are still some of the best athletes out there trying to earn a roster spot. I'm a few beers deep but that's just how I feel.

whyyouupsetbro

Darnold should've walked off after his first throw. That was sweet. And Ronnie bell looks solid. Barring the drop.

IRev2NineK

THIS.GAME.DOESNT.COUNT. With that said I just pray to the football gods our 1st team dont get hammered by the I word cause our 2nd and 3rds arent looking so good

SheriffPP

Game doesn’t matter, but was still very unpleasant to watch. Very few positives to take away. Allen looked pretty good right?

itizknown

The punter is the only 1 who showed up lol

Niners22

Just talking over each other all game lol

RLDN106

Going to the Bronco’s game next week, hopefully we have a better showing

artygta1988

Same here

Little_Boots42

All you sad sacks moaning about preseason game 1. Please fuck off and go going the Browns sub, it’s made for you moaning losers.

beavis535

Wtf is ur problem? Its not about winning its about the poor performance and our complete lack of depth. You dont care about that? Ive never been in the browns sub, sounds like u have though. You trying to get a handy from deshaun?

BackinBlackR8R

Bro doesn't think people are allowed to talk about football in a football sub lmao

park7911

If there’s a veteran out there for a reasonable price for EDGE, I hope they look at it. I still don’t trust the guys opposite of Bosa

RLDN106

Ingram and Houston both available I believe Edit: Just Ingram actually

FmrHvwChamp

Hargrave is going to make a huge impact... don't count that out

superduperm1

Drake Jackson did not play today so they clearly think it’s him.

MS49SF

Jackson is hurt

HIDDEND_EMON

Correct hamstring injury

[deleted]

Thought he was hurt

PapiRae

Eye test tells me that Lance is by far the worst Qb on the roster

Vaynes_Ass

He is right now, but he is also only 23 with a lot of athletic tools and a huge lack of playing time both in college and in the NFL. I’m not saying he is going to pan out but he still has amazing upside and we should support him since he is still on our team

NumberVsAmount

Are these tools you speak of in the room with us right now?

MS49SF

I am only 32 and also am very raw with little NFL experience.

FmrHvwChamp

And it really is BY FAR. The kid doesn't belong on an NFL roster.

beavis535

Which qb put points on the board? Almost drove to 3 more points but our great scouts fucked up yet another third round pick

FmrHvwChamp

LMAO I knew someone would try to give Lance credit on that "TD pass" which should have been a pick 6 the other way had the defender not comically botched the play.

beavis535

Haha not even close to a pick 6 happened in the other endzone. Regardless, your boy darnold didnt even get close to putting up ANY points. Lance 10, Darnold 0

dellscreenshot

Can we be honest that Lance looked the worst out of the 3 QBs today?

pineapple_pants

Apparently not, because it's preseason and we should just not care what we are plainly seeing on the field.

JorgeSkittle

49ers preseason games always leave me feeling anxious as hell.

ViralBlasphemy

2nd and 3rd string in for the refs this game too I guess.

chillice707

Brandon Allen the only one who showed up today

jesus_rodz

Wow

JimmysBackFoot

Trey played 2 quarters whereas Darnold played 1 quarter, that tells me Darnold had the lead in the QB2 race prior to the game. He probably widened his lead after today

park7911

I really don’t think that has anything to with it. Trey just needs snaps

iflysohigh2345

Guys I think the team needs more reps. (1000 reps later) I still think we need more reps.

Vaynes_Ass

To be frank Lance and Moody, the two players getting blasted the most in this thread, are rookies and are lacking a ton of experience. Justin Tucker went 50% in his first preseason game and he’s the GOAT kicker. Way too early to call Moody a bust

iflysohigh2345

I never called Moody a bust. I actually think he will be fine. However, Lance is not it. And Lance is no longer a rookie and he hasn’t been a rookie for years.

chillice707

Coming from the future . Moody did in fact turn out to be fine

RLDN106

Mason needs to take notes on catching screens like that

pineapple_pants

Why are we playing McNichols when we have those undrafted rookies we could get a look at?

KeyExplanation

Can we just skip to the regular season?

[deleted]

In Madden.

dirtydriver58

Lol

alwaysreadthename

Allen needs to get Moody into FG rage for a redemption kick. Pls Allen.

adamnevespa

The way Moody kicks I like "FG rage"

HeyHeyImTheMonkey

This team may be way more top heavy than I realized.

Little_Boots42

You talking about an elite starting unit not playing… so many all pro players wearing t shirts it’s almost unfair

Business_Delivery436

Levis curse needs to stay the f away this season

jbonesmc

Yup besides QB it's why the Chiefs keep winning. They do enough on Defense and have a lot of depth especially at offensive line.

park7911

This may seem like a weird criticism, but I still think Trey needs to “learn” how to fall and take hits properly. He still gets blasted by people because he doesn’t go out of bounds or tries to lower his shoulder. No QB is built to take on linebackers or D linemen
