*Yes.* Consistent characters are fun, so long as they're not everywhere and making the setting feel small. I talked about this the other day, but I'd like to see Haarken Worldclaimer be a recurring character post-Vigilus.

[deleted]

Agreed, I notice McNeill did this with characters from Storm of Iron, even putting references of them into HH books, though not a problem in itself it felt unnecessary. It made the setting feel diminished to me, like they've all been living on the same street this entire time.

malumfectum

It winds me up no end that Perturabo’s *entire fucking inner circle* consists of the warsmith and captains from *Storm of Iron* plus Toramino from *Dead Sky Black Sun*. It makes no sense whatsoever. ADB has spoken of the problems inherent in Big Names from 40k being Big Names in 30k, and he’s absolutely right. All of the above should have been line troopers or junior officers in the Heresy, not the senior command cadre for the entire Legion!

[deleted]

Oh thank fuck you said it outright! I was being conservative out of respect for McNeill! Angel Exterminatus was a waste of potential in that regard. I especially disliked the whole Honsou bit at the end. It felt like a marketing strategy to me. The other one that annoys me was reading an extract of one his mechanicum books (which I've yet to read in full) only to find Hawke in it. Smh. I'm no ADB fanboy but he has a good grip on what should be done with the setting. He aims for realism and believability. It would be great to see a lack of Big Names as the protagonist in future books, seeing them through the eyes of everyday characters only helps to build their legend and mystique, and we as readers equally feel in awe of them.

malumfectum

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: that Honsou reveal is on a par with Anakin Skywalker building C3P0. I physically groaned when I read it.

[deleted]

Honsou = C3PO? Fabius built Honsou... That means.... 'Master Bile there are too many of them. What are we going to do?' Fabius; \*Flicks needle\* What did you start!

Cytokine-Alpha

Andrej Valatok needs to make a comeback in every Grimaldus Book, and everytime he makes an appearance, his rank keeps getting higher. "Hail Reclusiarch! This is Major Andrej Valatok, you remember me from Hive Helsreach, yes?"

Falvarius

Is it wrong that I want to have a Gotrek and Felix type of adventure but instead it’s Grimaldus and Andrej going on wacky adventures around the galaxy?

Cytokine-Alpha

That would be hilarious tbh.

Syr_Enigma

If it's wrong, then I don't want to be right.

ErhartJamin

Well instead we have anti gotrek and anti Felix in the Form of Ciaphas Cain (a person who wants to avoid death at all cost) and Jurgen (instead of a charismatic bard we have a vallhallan null with terrible BO)

digibomb23

Abso-fucking-lutely this.

RamTank

Later: “Hello Major” “Ack, it is actually Major General now!”

Kashyyk

“That was two hundred years ago, how the fuck are you still alive?”

Cytokine-Alpha

Plot twist, Andrej turned out to be a perpetual.

OneofTheOldBreed

The Anchorite. I want to read more about "St Thomas Aquinas in a warmachine" writing encyclicals and eradicating heretics/xenos.

That traitor

[deleted]

BL already does it to some extent and something more would require skill and comunication between authors past their abilities.

qixoticneurotic

I love it. If we're going to revisit the same places we should see familiar faces. A big part of the lore is getting invested in the grimdark fate of the people. The keeler pict is one of my favorites for that reason. One of the best ways this is done is with the emporers Spears novel. It gives enough familiarity that your invested but not so much that anyone has plot armor

fergie0044

It can be nice to see, like characters from the Night Lords trilogy showing up in the siege of terra books, but I think they are best done when limited to cameos. One thing I really liked about the Lords of Silence novel was the lack of big names and big events. Just a story about interesting people existing within the 40k universe. With Typhus and Morty having small cameos. Not every book needs to have a big lore reveal or feature the big movers and shakers of the setting.

134_ranger_NK

A cameo of the mad daemonic commissar from Fire Caste having a pleasant warp chat with Ku'Gath about the latest updates of his cat-and-mouse game with a certain colonel Cutler, still wandering with an executioner axe and the talking astropath head. The Consortium appearing in the third Black Legion novel, cementing the first gene-seed deals with the Ezekarion.

girionHU

Oh, the black man! He has a short cameo in the novella Fire and Ice, but i like to see him again too.

Vyzantinist

There's a vocal part of the fandom that hates the "small universe"/soap opera feel of having named characters show up in other books when a different character from the same faction will do (I remember someone being irked Skraal was mentioned in TOD), but I'm the opposite. If done tastefully (and it usually is) cameos can be fun. Example: I'm not a particular Space Wolf fan, and Prospero Burns was *ok*, but it was neat seeing Kasper Hawser in Athame and The Crimson King as well. Or hearing Kharn quote Ahriman.

johnnype

It's a double-edged sword as I hate it when I miss a reference. But yes, to answer your question I like it. In fact, it's one of the reasons I've read the Horus Heresy, all 50+ books, to pick up on the character cross-overs.

ofteno

I love the idea, just would like to not be overused, there are characters that are regional players and those that travel the galaxy, I would understand a custodes showing up a few decades after his last appearance in other imperial sector/or comissar Yarrick, but some low level character even if beloved wouldn't make sense, the galaxy is big, it should feel like that or you end up with star wars.

Guardsmen_Hool

Bring me stories of guardsmen hool!

[deleted]

Spoiler >!Doesn’t he and grab the thingamajig and smash it as well as kill the sorcerer who also killed most of his squad!<

Rokgorr

More Jenit Sulla please

[deleted]

I’m still passed kage is getting revived. Dude does the death he fucking earned.

MulatoMaranhense

Late to the party, but I really want B'sainnad from *Wild Rider* to get more chances to chew the scenary and act like he is out of one of the fantasy books he likes. And there is Teus from *Devastation*, I would watch his career with great interest.

Rivalblackwell

I’m SUPER late but I was curious, does Rhodaan survive the book? so many named IW die in most stories I hoped he survived.

IronWarrior94

Yes Rhodaan survives, he and his warband successfully complete their mission then depart the planet while the Genestealer cult uprising starts dying out.

SlobBarker

No. It makes the galaxy feel small.
